Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwas Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

RunAmoc Style Comparison
  Primal Dash Moc3
Summary Primal RunAmoc Extra-wide toe splay for healthy, natural foot function. Dash RunAmoc Multipurpose minimal shoe: athletic, casual or dressy. Moc3 RunAmoc An ultra-light running "sock" with the durability of a shoe.
Features

• Extra wide toe box. This shoe is widest at the toes, rather than the ball of the foot, and is ideal for people who want to maintain/restore natural foot shape and function.

• Rubber toe cap protects front of shoe from scuffs and abrasions, useful for hikers and trail runners.

• Extended lacing system is designed to fit snugly around instep, yet allow toes to spread out as much as possible.

• Underside of tongue is lined with a thin layer of Breathe-O-Prene, a breathable, neoprene-like material, to hold the shoe securely across the top of the foot.

• A versatile minimal design that can function as an athletic shoe, a casual shoe or a formal shoe (depending on color choices).

• Mid-level minimal shoe option for people who do not want the extra-wide toe box of the Primal RunAmoc, but prefer a shoe that is more traditional than the Moc3.

• Short lacing system allows adjustable fit around the instep while leaving the front of the foot unencumbered.

• Every component of the Dash is fully customizable for unique color, material and sole options.

• Our lightest minimal shoe, and one of the lightest in the world! Designed to be as flexible and lightweight as possible.

• Easily rolls up and fits into small spaces when not in use, such as a small bag or tucked under a belt.

• Slip-on design allows quick on/off when you're on the go.

• Breathe-O-Prene lining hugs your foot from all sides for a snug, but ventilated fit.

• Sole pattern is cut sparsely to allow maximum flexibility and barefoot experience (see image below).

Soling Material Comparison

RunAmoc Sole Comparison
5mm Lightning 2mm Street 6mm Megagrip Bullhide Leather
Summary 5mm Lightning Sole Multifunctional sole for a wide range of uses. 2mm Street Sole Minimal space between feet and ground. 6mm Megagrip Sole Unparalelled grip on steep, rocky and muddy trails. Bullhide Leather Sole Extremely flexible sole for most unrestricted foot movement.
Features

Ultra-flexible in all directions, plus longer durability over thinner soles. Tread pattern provides sufficient traction on most surfaces.

Our thinnest and lightest sole. Minimal space between feet and ground.

Includes deep lugs that have been tested and proven by ultrarunners for performance on difficult trails.

We add an additional 3.5mm midsole to shoes that use the Megagrip sole to provide an extra buffer from sharp rocks.

Our most flexible sole! 3–4mm thick (natural hides vary slightly). Pliable texture provides our highest level of groundfeel and most unrestricted foot movement.

All-natural leather material allows grounding conductivity.

Use

A versatile sole for most uses. Rubber compound provides natural "stickiness" on smooth surfaces while zig-zag tread helps grip onto unnatural surfaces in nature, such as gravel or rocky paths. Thin and flexible enough for optimal groundfeel, yet thick enough to keep feet protected.

Perfect for running on smooth surfaces or for trail runners who have strengthened their feet to tolerate groundfeel of rough surfaces.

Designed specifically to handle challenging terrain, Megagrip soles perform well in both wet and dry conditions and are a favorite among extreme trail runners.

Megagrip soles are heavier than our other soles due to their extra thickness and density.

A favorite for people who prefer to run or walk barefoot. Like the street sole, it is recommended to have feet strengthened for barefoot-style running before using this sole on rough or rocky terrain.

NOTE: this sole can become very slippery on smooth, wet surfaces.

Leather Material Comparison

Leather Material Comparison
  Smooth Full Grain

Includes Sublime, Aged, Shiny
and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

LITE
Summary Smooth Full Grain Leather Smooth and semi-glossy topside (leather labeled as "shiny" is extra glossy with metallic finish). Underside is suede. LITE Perforated Leather Smooth, thin and light. Perforated for increased breathability.
Features

Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.

NOTE: Vegetable-Tanned leather is a "naked" material and may stain easily, even with plain water or leathercare.

Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold—but still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes.

Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.

Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!

Use

Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.

While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leathercare (found in our Gifts and Accessories category).

Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.

    My Favorite Minimalist Shoes

    Rating

These shoes are everything I have wanted to find for my feet since switching to barefoot/minimalist movement. The wide toe-box and flexibility are unlike anything I have felt before. They are extremely comfortable and move well with my foot. I'm excited to have found my new favorite shoe!

    Australian Trekking Done Well

    Rating

I have had the Dash RunAmoc for a few years, but my foot was now too wide for it. Prior to our Tasmanian trekking adventure, I invested in this new pair of Primals, they are amazing. They held up well and I had no sore feet at the end of each day. I was even able to do a day of beach hiking barefoot! People were in awe of my family's minimalist hiking shoes (including the fun colors). I added grounding to the shoes, which was more challenging because of the Megagrip sole, but it was worth it! I'm an 8U in everything and was an 8U in this. I used a previous suggestion of leaving a pair of socks stuffed in the toes to stretch it a bit over the big toe, but I also used the top lace holes to hold my foot in place on the downhills. I had no issues with toenails!
  4. Low volume toebox

    Rating

I love the shape and width of the wide primal runamocs, and the megagrip sole is perfect for my needs, but I had to give up on them because they are so low-volume over the toes. It's very frustrating for me because otherwise they are the most comfortable athletic shoes I can buy for my wide feet. My foot length with socks is between 7U and 8U according to the size chart, so the 8U wide should be a good size for me, since this style runs short. I was desperately trying to make them work in 8U wide, but found that when I wear them for more than a couple hours, or when I'm more active, my big toes hurt too much from the downward pressure of the toe cap. The leather does stretch, so breaking them in creates some slack in the leather so the rubber toe cap is not pulled down quite so tight, but it's not enough to solve the problem. The ends of my toes stay under the tight rubber, which I don't think stretches at all. I tried 9U wide, which is long enough to keep my toes away from the rubber, and I liked them a first, until the leather stretched and the fit became so loose, my feet were sliding around in them even with thick socks, and I was tripping a bit on the extra length. So I put in a 3mm insole, which reduced (but did not eliminate) the sliding, but unfortunately caused the stiff edges of the lacing stays to hit the wrong spot on my ankle and dig in painfully. 9U regular was too small, there is a significant difference between the widths. Without half sizes, there are no other options (Dash runamocs are too narrow in the toes for me), so I keep hoping Softstar will redesign the Primal toebox with a more realistic volume. I was admiring the new Primal styles that just launched, but feeling sad that the runamocs, which I need the most, still have this problem.

Note from the Elves: Thank you Frog Feet for taking the time to share your experience, as well as the many sizes you tried. I am sorry we have not been able to get you the perfect fit so far and will definitely pass along this information to our Development Elf.

    Primal RunAmoc

    Rating

I love these shoes. I can't recommend them enough. I have been barefoot for a year and a few months now and have tried many many barefoot brands. Once I put the Primal RunAmoc pair on, there's no going back. Honestly, they are amazing. I went for the 2mm sole. I was initially worried that they may be too thin, but wearing them have completely changed my perception and perspective about what a show should be and how walking should feel like. I have walked with them around 14 miles per day (Edinburgh Fringe Festival) for multiple days and have had no fatigue in my feet. I wish Softstar made more of their shoes with the Primal cut and with this thin Vibram sole.. Also, I wish Sofstar made a water resistant version of the Primal RunAmoc. Basically, unless it's raining I'm wearing my Primal RunAmocs, no matter where I go. It's just that in Scotland the rain season is about to start!
  6. Sole separates/front rubber flaw

    Rating

Positives I love the concept and design. The fit is amazing! Even with my wide feet, I order the regular size. Plenty of room in the toe box but fit like a glove everywhere else. There is no replacement for these shoes. Xeros have nothing on these. Use My feet move freely, and I can feel my arch flex and my toes grab onto boulder edges. I have very little problem with the small rocks and roots as my feet adjust. The primals offer the ultimate grip as I hike 14k footers and hike all over the Rockies! Room for Improvement After buying 2 pairs of the primal run amok shoes, I'm torn. With less than a year of use, the glue on the soles give way to the dirt and rocks and separate on the front and sides. At one point, I tripped over the sole, fell and cut my hand pretty badly. Finally, The second pair has a flaw in the seam on the rubber front part on the shoe which separated after the return window ended. I tried gorilla tape and duct tape. The tape quickly separated when introduced to dirt and rocks. Customer service/satisfaction The issues with the soles and the flaw with the seam occured slowly after the 3 month guarantee window, so I'm stuck with them. With a short return policy, Softstar seems dismissive and doesn't stand behind their product. The only advice they gave was for a shoe sole replacement company which does not work with these shoes - dead end. I ended up using show glue to fix it, which is undignified after less then a year of use for $200 shoes Overall, I'd probably buu these again, keeping show glue on hand. I'll assume the seam problem was a isolated thing. But I'm on the lookout for something else similar will be less expensive to replace if I need to do so.

    Great Shoe - Slightly disappointed

    Rating

First, and most importantly, these shoes are the most comfortable I have ever worn. I am on my feet for over 12 hours a day working in the hospital, and these shoes are like being barefoot (with just the right amount of padding). The quality is great; the leather is amazingly soft and the soles are flexible and comfortable. . My one, and only, complaint is that the color I selected was not as vibrant as the example on the order screen. I selected black leather with yellow stitching. On the display, the yellow was very vibrant and stood out very well. On my actual shoes, the yellow was MUCH more pale, and appears almost white when viewed from a distance. Overall: 10/10 for quality. 10/10 for comfort. 6/10 for expected appearance.

    Almost perfect

    Rating

I love everything about these shoes except that there isn't enough height in the toe box. Break-in is horrible for me, even after stretching with balled up socks for weeks. That said, I'm on my 2nd pair with a 3rd pair in the wings because there is nothing comparable on the market! I also want to shout out the amazing customer service. It just feels good to support a small business who CARES about customers!!

    Great shoe, however...

    Rating

Let me start by saying that I love my Primal RunAmocs. I've been on a barefoot shoe journey for about a year now starting with a pair of Xero Prio's and including daily toe-spacing for several months. The Xero's are now too narrow for my feet so I was interested in the RunAmocs. I used the recommended sizing (didn't size up) for the RunAmocs and ordered the wide version. I've worn these shoes daily for several weeks and now can assess them. The foot shape and width are perfect, the leather material is great, and the soles are flexible and the perfect thickness for me. (And they look cool!) But... As others have mentioned, there is very little height in the toe box. My banana shaped big toe rubbed and pushed against the rubber toe cover and this was painful for a while - almost to the point of giving up. I consider this a design flaw, hence 4 versus 5 stars. Now they are finally broke in so are comfortable, but my toes still rub. Sizing up would not have been good as there is plenty of horizontal room already, just not enough vertical space. I hope Softstar can address this in a future version of the shoe. I followed the recommendation of packing the toes with rags overnight and this helped a little. What I finally did was use Lacrosse ball in the toes to give a big stretch and this helped more. I would purchase these again, but don't look forward to breaking in another pair.

    Great shoes

    Rating

They might feel weird at first, but wear them for a day or two and use the sock-stuffing-overnight method and they are the most comfy shoes ever. The ONLY shoe on the market that I know of that you can comfortably - VERY comfortably - wear CorrectToes toe spacers. The 5mm sole has great grip, I love doing lateral motions in them. Haven't actually played enough on concrete to vie for the durability, just been using them at home and walking around the last month. One thing to note though, is that the size guide by all parameters said I was a size 12U. However, this was not the case. I had to buy then exchange for a size 13U which was perfect. So, in my experience, it is better not to refer to the site's size-guide, and just choose the shoe size that is closest to your (normal) shoe size. Only other downside is that at first the height of the shoe does not feel like enough - it feels like you can't splay your toes upwards. However, the leather stretches with your movements and you get used to the shoe's lower ceiling, so this feeling disappeared after a few days. So all in all, amazing shoes, I love them A LOT. I use them every day. Takes a few days to get used to them, but otherwise great. Oh and the custom colors - don't get me started. They look so fire. Men's shoes are always the ugly standard black, brown, gray, dark blue. Here you can get the perfect clown shoes you always wanted!! Hahahaha No but really, I love the colors and think they look great. And I love the shoe a lot

... awesome shoes. I am a fan of Softstar shoes in general (this is my third pair), and these are my new favorites. They are comfortable, sturdy, suitable for wearing in the muddy conditions of Michigan Spring in my yard, and I've already gotten compliments as they are attractive, too. I really like the robust lugs on the sole, and the toe guard, which let me use these for chores in the barn, hiking, as well as running errands in town. They're comfortable to wear all day as they're not heavy, despite being so sturdy. Color me a big fan. I did size up and glad I did. Highly recommended.

My custom Primal RunAmoc pair is everything I’d hoped they’d be, and more. Perfect fit, all day comfort, and my feet and legs feel stable and strong all day. The exchange process was extremely easy to navigate (I needed a size larger than my original order). The customer service top notch. The only consideration now, how many pairs constitute too many for one person.

Can I get the Primal Runamoc with no rubber to cap, ie., just leather?

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Dear No CAPS - Thank you for your inquiry. The Primal RunAmocs have stitching underneath the toe cap that would be exposed and the shoe would not hold up. The stitching there creates volume for the toe box. The Dash RunAmoc has no toe cap and is a wonderful shoe to consider as an alternative?

    Freedom and dry feet!

    Rating

In the summer I like to wear Vibram CVT-LBs because they are so super minimalistic. Not the most durable shoes but so direct. BUT as soon as it rains a bit with the CVTs you get wet feet… even without walking through a puddle. So I looked for the most minimalistic bad a** wide toebox shoes I could find that can withstand some rain. And here I am having bought some pairs of Primal Run Amoks and loving them. Based on the sizing guide I should get a 10 or 11 (foot length: 27,5 cm) I ended up getting a 12 since I do not like my big toe to touch the front of the shoe with every step. Size 12 is on the edge of making me stumble - but the 2mm sole adapts quite nicely and bends up a bit on the front which also gives the toebox more volume. I went with the “wide” option since when I spread my toes they have a width of 13 cm… The Run Amoks are surprisingly warm and it’s no problem to wear them here in Germany with temperatures from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius for some time -even with the 2mm soles. Btw. I’m only using them with Injinji run lightweight socks. I love that the Vibram actually move along when I curl my toes and have this paper- thin sole. But the Primal Run Amoks with the wide toebox provide a different kind of freedom- wearing shoes and not feeling any restriction (like the toe-pockets of the Fivefingers). So, thank you Elves for conjuring up these shoes!

    Great shoes, careful with sizing

    Rating

My first pair had to be sent back because they were too short for my feet but was able to get them returned and replaced within a few weeks and relatively low hassle. You have to pay for another pair and wait for a refund on the original if you don't want to wait a month or more for the shoes to be shipped back, checked out, and credited as returned, which would make for a very long delay in receiving the new pair. The product is great though, best shoes I ever had

    Great shoes, overall

    Rating

These shoes were definitely pretty tight on me when I first got them, and I thought I might have bought a size too small, but after a couple of weeks, they stretched out to be a great fit. Still relatively tight, but much more room for my toes vertically. They also may seem like they have some toe spring when you lift your feet up and look at them, but standing up, the soles are touching the ground to the tip of my toes. As they are primal shoes, they have a very wide toe box and plenty of room for toe separation. I could easily wear these shoes with a set of toe separators on, too. They are also perfect for my foot shape, as my feet are quite wide and widen out on both sides of the foot, not too far from the heel. Overall, I'm very happy with these shoes, and I think they are definitely worth the money.

    Nice shoes

    Rating

I havent owned leather shoes and they feel nice and are easy to slip into. I went with the 3mm or 5mm tread cant remember which, but it wasnt the thinnest or thickest. I think the thickness is fine. The ankle mobility is great. Needs a bit more of a bulbous toe for greater space for big toe to wiggle than there is which would make them look more like clown shoes. Im sure some custom colors would make it look less clownish. I chose the azure blue . Color was accurate. I bought sheepskin inserts too from sofstar. I have them in there all the time as the only cushion in the shoe. They have become flat as paper essentially and the cushion they provide now is minimal. So either a basic orthodic for heel and arch support would probably be better. I do wear my shoes with socks which I was hoping not to need to do because the shoe tag inside and some seams on the base of the heel and inside of the foot and the sharp edge of the tongue abbrased my feet without them. Its not a big deal to wear socks with them actually. They are still very comfortable. Overall they are very nice shoes still. The biggest issue I have is needing more cushion with them. I havent used them for trails at all but i suspect they would work fine on grass or soil. They are not made for impact, you may need the super thick tread, which was not what I wanted for a casual shoe.

I love my custom Primal RunAmocs! And Softstar's customer service is excellent. Initially I purchased one size too small. I spoke with one of the elves who was happy to let me know that the sizing issues would be fixed by ordering one size larger. I returned the smaller shoes in the same packaging which was super simple. My refund was very prompt. I ordered one size larger and received the new pair very timely, understanding of course that they were custom-made and not sitting on the shelf ready to ship. So of course I love the color. The quality of the material and the elves work is stellar. My feet couldn't be happier - this is a very healthy choice for my long-term mobility. I wear these with and without Correct Toes - toe spacers. The shoes are exceptionally comfortable either way. I highly recommend this company and their shoes.

Nice and wide for my duck feet

    Rating

Sizing: I normally wear a US men's 13 to get a wide enough shoe, and the consequence is extra space in front of my toes. Based on the sizing chart, I should have ordered an 11, but I have never worn a shoe that small and didn't feel comfortable doing that, especially since I was getting custom colors. So I got 12 wide, and they fit great. Appearance: I personally think they look pretty goofy, being so duck-like, but I've gotten numerous compliments, for what it's worth. I am happy with the "latte" and "avocado" colors I picked, which are pretty neutral and earth-toned. I wish there were off-the-shelf colorways that were more subdued. Comfort: These shoes feel pretty great. I got the thicker sole on the advice of my brother, and it provides enough cushion. I find myself spreading my toes more, which makes for better stability. I'm also finding myself walking on my toes more, reducing heel striking. (This is all when walking; I really dislike running and probably will never run in these shoes.) Downsides: If you spend all day standing on a hard surface, I imagine your feet might hurt at the end of the day. There is very little padding, so just keep that in mind. I have not experienced any pain so far, but I don't stand for extended periods. The only major complaint I have is that the shoes are too wide to fit in my bike toe clips properly, so I really can't wear them while biking.

    Perfect Hiking Boots

    Rating

I wanted a pair of shoes that I could wear on rugged Colorado trails. Goretex and waterproof boots make my feet sweat and cause nasty blisters. These shoes are the perfect compliment of a low profile full "feel" shoe without compromising on a tough, well made sole. I've wandered rainforests, scrambled through boulder fields, and even waded in them on kayak trips. I have pretty wide feet too and usually my shoes fall apart after a few uses, but these with thier wide toe box have kept going strong. The search for the best pair of shoes ends here.

I am currently wearing these shoes while in a 2 month road trip around Europe. I am 72 and adopted a natural footwear lifestyle over a year ago and my feet are happy. These shoes were super comfy on the plane and have been great on hikes. Because they are a tad snug in the length, I tried one size up but they were too long and looked big on my feet. I kept the smaller size and found they’re perfect without using correct toes. When they have stretched some, I will try wearing with correct toes again. I love softstar shoes. I donated all my old shoes and have a lot of softstar now. By the way, their customer service is exemplary.

    Most Comfortable Shoes Ever!!

    Rating

These are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, and I've tried a lot. Over the past few years, I've worn many minimalist shoes produced by companies such as: Xero shoes, Vivobarefoot, Merrell, Whitin, and others. The other brands are reasonably comfortable, but in many cases their durability is poor. For example, I can wear out a pair of Xero shoes within 3-4 months of daily wear. The quality is just not there! On the other hand, the Primal Runamoc shoes are #1 in comfort and the workmanship is top notch. You can tell that they were not made in a foreign factory where quality is not always the best. I purchased another pair of the Runamoc shoes recently and plan to wear one pair for work and one pair for walking/hiking/etc. If you want your feet to be in "Footvana" then try these bad boys out. I think you'll be very happy with your purchase and your feet will be in love... with the Softstar shoes, that is!!

    Your foot will grow...and grow...and grow...and grow...

    Rating

I began to wear Primal RunAmocs in October of 2021 in an effort to regain my balance and coordination. I was suffering with a neuromuscular issue on my right side...my right big toe would often stick up in the air (especially when bending down to pick something up and when in walking motion) and this affected my balance and coordination. I also experienced a feeling of falling backwards every time I took a step backwards. At work, I could not lift more than 15 pounds without almost toppling over. I began with a size 11 primal runamoc and began to use correct toes as well. Each month that passed by my foot continued to grow, lengthen, and spread out as my toes relaxed. Every time that I sized up- size 11 to size 12, size 12 to size 13, size 13 to size 14 - my foot continued to grow and bump up toward the edge of the shoe. This made me happy...but also a little bummed out because I had to continue sizing up. I'm glad that my foot continued to grow because each time that I sized up in primal runamocs, my neuromuscular issue improved and my symptoms got better and better. In May of 2022, my feet began to bump up against the sides of my size 14 primal runamocs...I had only worn them for two weeks after sizing up from a size 13. "I've come this far" , I remember telling myself, "...so I might as well bite the bullet and size up to size 15". Three weeks later, my size 15 primal run amocs came in the mail and I could not be any happier with my purchase. I am very satisfied and when I tried them with my correct toes for the first time I knew that I had finally found my perfect shoe size. All of my toes were flat on the ground and my symptoms from my neuromuscular issue were pretty much gone. I'm applying to a new job and having these shoes gives me the confidence to know that I will be able to perform well on my feet. A word to the wise, if you feel your feet growing out of your Softstar shoes, take the time and the chance to size up and let your feet restore themselves to their full natural size. Even though it took me months and hundreds of dollars to find my right size as my foot grew, it was more than worth it. Invest in your health because that return on investment will be a happier and healthier you. :) I have found that the 2 mm street sole is much more durable than the 5 mm omniflex sole. That being said, I would not wear the 2 mm street sole in rainy conditions. On rainy days, I would stick to the 5 mm sole or the megagrip sole if your shoe size allows you to have a megagrip sole. Is this shoe perfect? No, but it almost is. The 2mm street sole in particular has quite the toe spring curve...I think it's because of how light the 2 mm sole is...so that's probably why it curves up. Luckily for me, sizing up to a size 15 allowed the tips of my toes to rest on the flat part of the sole just before the toe spring starts. As a result, all my toes are flat on the ground and I get all the anatomical benefits of a flat, minimal shoe. So if you're in between sizes and the toe spring is bothering you, just size up until the toe spring does not affect you. Skinny ankles? Just skip the first pair of lace holes and start lacing your shoes up on the second pair of lace holes and up top create a lace lock by creating a C shape on each side of the lace sections and then loop the lace in between each C shape. This lace lock pulls the material in the back of your shoe closer to your ankle and keeps it nice and snug while also having the added benefit of giving your toes more room to spread out and move up and down. This shoe is the best shoe I have ever tried on in my life. It's definitely worth a shot if you want to restore your natural foot health. Thank you Softstar!

Love it but it has a design flaw

    Rating

I have purchased 3 pairs of Primal Runamocs over the years with various combinations of soles and widths. Even after going back to “regular” natural foot-shaped running shoes for while, I find myself returning to these shoes, so there’s something very special about them. They’re great for foot health. What I do not like is the fact that I almost always have to interrupt my run to shake out little stones that find their way into my shoes through the gap in the heel/ankle area. It’s so frustrating. I even bought heel pads to see if they would help close the gap and they did a bit, but the stones still get in even though I mostly run on paved paths. The few times I’ve worn these shoes to run on a dirt or mulched path, it was unbearable. Every little thing got in the shoes. Conventional shoes have some built up padding around the heel/ankle opening to prevent this and that’s one thing I wish these shoes had. Any idea, Elves? Please don’t suggest wearing gaiters!

After researching a lot of barefoot hiking shoes, the Megagrip Primal Run Amocs seemed to have everything I needed. Ordered a custom pair and hoped for the best. These shoes have changed my mind on what I thought were comfortable shoes. They have replaced all my other favorite barefoot shoes. Even though I originally bought them for hiking, I find myself reaching for them more and more in everyday wear. The leather is so soft and feels great against my skin. The rubber toe was slightly tight right out of the box but has loosened up nicely with wear and stretching per the instructions. The heel cup design is comfortable and holds my foot in place well. Looking to order more shoes from Softstar. Love that it’s a US based company.

Great fit with new heel design

    Rating

I recently ordered my 4th pair of Primal RunAmocs (I've been ordering this line from Softstar for over 4 years), and this is the first one with the new heel design. I think the fit is wonderful and definitely keeps my heel from slipping (and keeps my socks on while hiking, especially uphill), and it fits more snugly over my mid-foot area, however I do have to warn anyone who has ordered these shoes in the past that the new design causes the shoe to fit differently. My experience has been that I needed to size up one size from the older model to have the shoe fit correctly length-wise. I am now wearing a size 10U, whereas I previously wore a 9U (my foot shape has not changed, so it's definitely the shoes). Width-wise, the new "wide" width is the same great cut as the old "regular". Customer service went above and beyond to help me get the "new" sizing figured out, and I want to give a shout-out to Elf Nicole for her efforts. Now that it's sorted out, my feet are loving my new shoes. If you haven't tried this line before, it works really well for those with bunions (me) and/or a wider squarish foot shape, and will accommodate correct-toes (toe spacers) if you use them. The quality of the materials and the way the shoes are put together is outstanding, and they last forever even under heavy use (I wear mine every day, everywhere, on all sorts of terrain). They are the ONLY shoes that don't give me pain, and I am so grateful to have found this shoe company!

Have ordered three pair of custom runamocs. Didn't much like the fashion colors that are offered. But I do like the ability to choose my colors and build my own shoe. So have made up a pair. One set in my high school colors, another set in my college colors and the most recent set in my local adopted high school colors. I've added my own appropriately colored laces for each pair. Love how they feel. Never had a negative comment. Most folks just ask what they are, I explain and they like the concept. Works for me. I like the old adage, "You can have any two of price, quality, or service." Love choosing Softstar's quality and service. I buy VALUE when I shop. Paying more for quality brings long term value.

I bought these for hiking and backpacking: the megagrip sole is perfect for that. I applied the Nikwax waterproofing, but the areas where the leather meets the sole still leech water through when in really wet conditions. (I don’t suppose Softstar has plans for a barefoot all-rubber boot? That would be glorious!) Fit is splendid. These are the first shoes I’ve ever had that actually have more width in the toe area than I need. I have EEE-width feet, so ordered the wide size. I can actually spread my toes as wide as they go and barely touch the inside edges of the toebox. The width is perfect through the body of the shoe. Build quality is excellent, comfort is superb, custom colors are fun, and the sole is perfect for trails.

    Running small?

    Rating

I'm starting to like the foot-feel after having broken them in for a couple weeks, but I'm hoping that they will stretch even more. It seems like these are smaller in length than the pair of DASH RunAmocs I have in the same size (note: this is different from the width change). I wish I would've sized up before wearing them -- did so with hopes they would stretch. The extra cover on the toes limit the stretching ability. I tried stuffing socks into the toe area for a couple days to get them to stretch. It helped a little. I have to wear super thin socks with them, but I don't mind since the leather is warm enough. I would recommend sizing UP if you're on the edge of two sizes. For an FYI --- my typical women's shoe size is 11, narrow width, and I ordered the 10U. As they've stretched, hiking has been fabulous (on both ice and in mud AND when my feet got fairly wet). I've worn Correct Toes with them, and the width of the 'new' regular size is perfect. Again, hoping for more stretch in the toes, but I know my feet are happier with Soft Star than many, many other brands of shoes --- even minimalist brands.

This is my second pair of Sofstar shoes, the first was of the same model a year ago. On this one, the rubber came apart from the soles in the first month of use. This is because not enough glue was used. Enough glue could have been used, but now I will have to spend more money and my own time to repair these shoes. Softstar clearly makes enough in profits to allow its cobblers to use enough glue, given its profits and how little it pays its employees. I will not purchase shoes from Softstar again unless they begin paying their employees a thriving wage and stop skimping on things that are necessary for their shoes to stay together.

I got these for running because my latest Vivos didn't really suit my foot shape, gave me a blister on my fourth toe and I think I got inflamed tendons from the laces digging into my foot. I'm really pleased with how soft and comfy these are. At first I was worried about the rubber bumper pressing down on my big toe. I stuffed them overnight as instructed and now they're fine. They look like flippers :) They are beautifully made. The only thing I don't like about them so much is that the heel goes straight up rather than cupping your heel, which means no chafing or digging in, but there's a gap that little stones can flick into (although really that hasn't happened very often) and the feeling that they might not be secure takes a little getting used to. I will probably buy another pair when they wear out.

I designed my shoes in blue and black. I really like them. I ordered 13 in extra wide thicker sole. At first you got to get used to the huge toe box. I also ordered a smaller black pair with the smaller sole to compare. The smaller ones were just to tight. It seems the leather on top of shoe was pulling on the front making the front come up and pulling on my toes. I would have to try to push down on shoe to make it flat. Being a minimalist shoe wearer my feet want to be totally flat on ground. The wider ones were like this so I kept those. I find alot of other companies like xero and lems still have a toe raise which is strange to me if we are supposed to be barefoot walking in minimalist shoes. It hurts my feet now that I've changed over. I really like there rumamoks and will order more later. They are very comfortable. They do look like clown shoes but the comfort is worth it. I do recommend. Thanks and God bless.
