primal-sole-foot-shape-comparison

Adult Primal Sawyers are not your average wide toe box casual shoes. They are designed with a minimalist aesthetic and have an innovative Primal sole shape. They are impossibly lightweight and feel seriously soft, making you forget you’re even wearing them! As such, they work great as wide toe box skate shoes.

PRIMAL SOLE SHAPE

This style features an eye-catching Primal sole shape that works with, instead of against, your natural foot physiology. This anatomically correct shape, with an extra wide toe box, is modeled after the way our feet are naturally meant to spread to encourage wildly healthy toe splay. Zero drop Vibram Pyramid soles ensure the stack height is even from heel to toe. The adult Primal Sawyer's flexible materials let feet move freely while building strength and balance. This style works especially well with toe spacers to help restore natural foot shape and function.

LIGHTWEIGHT

Strolling through life in Sawyers is as close to barefoot as you can get, not only because of the shoe’s natural shape, but because it is unbelievably lightweight. Featuring an ultra-light Pyramid sole, the Sawyer weighs just 6.7 ounces, taking the top spot as Softstar’s most lightweight casual shoe.

  • Soft Nubuck* leather uppers.
  • Turned-down leather cuff.
  • Tongue gently padded with BreathOprene for comfort.
  • Ultralight: 6.7 oz (for size 8U; other sizes vary slightly in weight).
  • 6mm zero-drop Vibram Pyramid Sole.
  • Innovative sole shape with extra roomy toe box. If you are curious how the Primal compares to our Standard sole shape, check out our sole comparison tool.
  • Designed and handcrafted in Oregon, USA.

* Nubuck is a top-grain bovine leather that has been lightly buffed on the grain side, or outside, to give a slight nap of short protein fibers for a velvet-like surface. Nubuck is unique because it has the durability of a top-grain leather with a soft touch that feels similar to a suede leather.

You can measure your feet or your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our unisex shoe size chart to find the recommended shoe size.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

Changed my Life....Seems like a lot, but real

    Rating

I'm 80-years-old. Endeavor to stay in shape, Regular shoes weren't working. Found barefoot shoes, mostly made in Europe. Then found Softstar and they worked! Next thing you know I own 5 Primal Sawyers, 4 Primal Run Amocs, four Switchbacks, Three Phoenix boots, two Taylor Oxfords, and a pair of Rogues. And I've gifted all my European barefoot shoes to the local thrift shop. I did keep one pair of Lem boots for gardening. And I've gifted three pair of Phoenix boots to lady friends. I chose Softstar after trying the other barefoot brands. I know the town of Philomath from my college days at Oregon State, just down the road. I grew up in the clothing business and easily recognize quality. Still waiting for red Switchback boots!

    good for indoors

    Rating

I love these, they're so comfy. I did notice that walking even just from my house down the block to the corner store, and back, that these thin soles started to take a harsh beating. For example I've found little tiny bits of gravel lodged in the sort material and ended up with some holes. I now use these at work where I'm on tile floors, and change shoes if I have to go outside. But I love these a lot. The Chelsea boot soles are holding up for me in outdoor use.

  4. Lightweight, Comfortable, Beautiful

    Rating

Beautiful shoe, very lightweight and comfortable. The leather is incredibly soft. The sole is a little softer/spongier than a standard rubber sole, so it shows wear a little more quickly than other soles I have. The benefit of this kind of sole is that it molds to your feet and provides a tiny bit of cushion while maintaining excellent ground feel. The downside is that it's a little less stable if you're still developing ankle strength and not the best choice for longer bouts of exercise. Also, listen to the sizing recommendations on the website. I have low-volume feet that are 25 cm long, have a narrow heel, but a wide toe splay. When I first got these, they felt just right barefoot but were a little snug with socks. The leather stretched and they now fit well with or without socks. I'm glad I didn't size up in these. I have also gotten tons of compliments on these!

    Wears great shoes

I bought the blue Sawyers. These are shoes I want to put on my feet and wear and do things. I want to wear them casually, but I don't want to take them off for my other activities. The color is cool and amazing. Cool blue goes with so much. My feet thank me as I wear these shoes.

    Luxurious

    Rating

Luxurious! I've never owned shoes I would describe as "luxurious" - but the Primal Sawyer is that. I ordered the Coffee colour in wide, and am pleased with the quality and fit of the shoe. The Nubuck upper is very fine, soft and light on the foot. The soft Nubuck combined with a wide unstructured toes box allows the toes to feel unrestricted. Like my Switchbacks, the heel and mid-foot/instep of the shoe fits comfortably snug, thus securing the shoe to the foot and allowing for splay room in the toe-box. Toe separators can be easily worn with this shoe. The shoe looks better 'in person' than it does on the website. To my eye, the Nubuck is more 'velvet like', and the colour is darker than the images on the website appear. No complaint, the shoe actually looks more luxurious and stylish than on the website (almost regal). I ordered one size up from my Switchback boot (which I wouldn't want any shorter) because the Sawyer has a simple stitch down type of toe box, versus the 'moccasin-like' structured toe box on the Switchback. The shoe feels good, but I may have been able to stick with the same size, because the soft Nubuck upper would probably give and accomodate, rather than push against the toes. This is where it would be nice to try the shoes on in person, rather than having to buy online from Australia. Maybe Softstar, or other reviewers can add a comment on this for future purchasers. I'll be buying more Softstar shoes, so I'll finish with a constructive criticism: It would be nice to have a brown outsole for brown shoes. I wear a brown belt, not a black belt, with brown trousers - I'd prefer no black on my brown shoes (fussy hey!).

Comfy, inconspicuous despite opting for the Wide, waterproof with the Nikwax Nubuck treatment. I wear these shoes most days during what passes as winter in SoCal.

    easy peasy

    Rating

These are super light and great for those with dominant big toes that want to spread out. Also can accommodate a lot of volumes, particularly on the higher side. If you ask them to give maximum allowance at the toe seems, or something like that, that will get you the most volume directly above the toes. Went through dozens of shoes before realizing the primal sole is what is best for the big toes that want to splay out.

Softstar has knocked it out of the park with these shoes!!

    Rating

I'm so delighted I feel like dancing around in my new shoes. Finally, a shoe that looks nice enough that you can really squeak by with nicer clothes and have shoes that look great and don't really stand out a lot. These shoes are gorgeous in every detail, even better than what I could see from the online pictures, and with the wool inserts added (size up a little to give them space), these are the PERFECT everyday winter shoes. Of course they are immediately comfy. If you're like me and don't need thirty different pairs of shoes in every color and type, this is the shoe.

    Great dance shoes

    Rating

The bottom is slick and the shoe is as light and flexible as all the other Softstar shoes; thus they make for excellent dance shoes. The toe box is particularly wide, giving the shoe a unique look that I don't mind at all. I regularly get compliments on them. I slip in a shoe cushion and dance all night on these.
  13. One of the worst pairs of shoes I've ever bought.

    Rating

This company's shoes are very poorly made and hurt my feet. Their return policy is also intentionally deceptive - they will refuse to issue a refund if your shoes have even an iota of wear on them. I only wore mine for a single day and they said that was too much wear. Avoid this scam company at all costs.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Dear AT - we are sorry to hear you are unhappy with your Sawyer fit. We are very transparent with our return policy, and unfortunately shoes that are worn are not returnable for a full refund. We also have a fit and comfort gaurantee that if you are unhappy with how they fit with light use in the first 30 days, you can return them for a 50% credit, but we understand that you wanted a full refund after wearing them. We would love to connect with you personally if you could reach out to our customer service team.

Good for work and casual wear

    Rating

I work in an office and wanted something barefoot-friendly that didn’t look like a sneaker. These fit in well at the office, wearing them with either jeans or biz-casual. The shoes are durable and provide good ground feel. The only upgrades I can think of might be full-grain leather uppers or having them in a slip-on style. Otherwise, these are great. Two notes: 1. I bought these on sale and found them to be great value for money. 2. I bought the black nubuck color, the appearance in person is significantly darker than on the site - not bad, just different.

Great shoe, but not wide enough.

    Rating

Great shoe for a very wide foot like mine. I've bought this type for a few years. The upper part did separate from the sole at the widest parts of my foot and the store had a hard time repairing it. So for the latest batch I bought it one size bigger. It is ok in the front but it is too long in the back. I still wear the style of shoe (I have a few pairs), but I would like my issue dealt with at some point.

    Easily my favorite shoes

    Rating

Already having significant bunion development, especially on my right foot, I got the wide primal sawyer, and also CorrectToes with toe socks. Since I have always liked low-drop shoes, I had no adjustment time period at all. I have not yet figured out how to place the metatarsal pads right in the shoes yet. My goal is to prevent or at least slow down the arch collapse and bunions, and definitely avoid surgery. Totally pleased so far. Would be nice to have a consult with an appropriate podiatrist to perfect what I'm doing! At first I didn't want to wear them outside because the soles are so thin, but they're so comfortable that I couldn't resist. I walk with a light foot, LOL!

The best gift for my feet: absolute comfort and cocoon of natural materials

    Rating

The best gift I've ever given my feet in my entire life! For years I thought I was wearing minimalist shoes, and there was an improvement compared to the narrow shoes on the mass market, but now, with these Primal Sawer in the "wide" version + the Sheepskin plus "Wide" soles, we're entering another dimension! I suffer from tailor's bunions on both feet and the other "minimalist" shoes I've worn so far didn't really relieve me, now I finally have the feeling of no longer having my little toes oppressed and what flexibility! For years I've been looking at "Softstar shoes" without daring to order because I live in France and I was afraid of getting the wrong size and then being bothered to return them. But now, with the free shipping, I dared and I did well! The size is perfect, with a little margin in front, which I appreciate. What really convinced me was the fact that Softstar shoes works with natural materials, especially leather, and is manufactured in the United States with respect for workers. The "minimalist" shoes of other brands are often made of synthetic materials, which I find very harmful to the foot (burning and rubbing sensations, odors, etc.) and to the environment. I rediscover the pleasure of walking in a natural and protective shoe and with the wool sole to insulate from the cold, it's even better, the sensation is like walking on cotton! So, it has a purchase cost, but for all the reasons mentioned: respect for the environment and workers, foot comfort, etc., no hesitation, it's worth the investment! I will order from you again, I have been very interested in your products for years, now that I have taken the plunge, I am convinced.
  20. Primal Sawyers

    Rating

Love these shoes!! They are so comfortable that I forget I'm wearing shoes at all. I've always been the kind of person that kicks shoes off as soon as I get in the house, but I honestly forget I'm wearing these. I've been wearing barefoot shoes for about 10 years and these are one of the widest shoes I've purchase. The toe box is perfect for my foot. As someone who has bought wide shoes their whole life, this is one of the few times a regular width shoe has fit comfortable. The soles are very thin which is great for ground feel, but I am afraid if I use them for walking everyday they will wear very quickly. I'd love to see this style with one of your thicker soles just for wear purposes. Many thanks to the Elves for these...cute and comfortable

    Lovely with one unexpected issue...

    Rating

These are seriously comfortable shoes! The leather is so soft and the Primal last fits my foot snugly around the heel and midfoot while providing ample space for the forefoot and toes. People who are accustomed to the appearance of normal shoes have certainly noticed the extra width of my Sawyers, but as someone who loves barefoot shoes, I personally think they look great. The shoe is stitched all around, has quality laces, and a substantial sole (though still fully flexible). The only issue I have with this shoe is that it seems to catch debris from the ground at a much higher rate than my other barefoot shoes, so much so, in fact, that it discourages me from wearing them for outdoor walks. I have average-width ankles, and wear these shoes exclusively barefoot, so there is some space between the shoe collar and both sides of my achilles, where debris can fall in. Perhaps it's something to do with the height of the collar, where it's not quite high enough to block debris (like a chukka) but not quite low enough to avoid catching any (like my Tadeevo Bliss). Whatever the reason is, these shoes seem to immediately catch debris whenever I wear them barefoot on any outdoor terrain, paved concrete included. I haven't tried them with socks, but I expect that would help as the sock would fill more width at the collar. All in all a lovely shoe, just wish I could wear it more often!

    Primal Sawyer

    Rating

These shoes are great. The best pair I own. They look nice, they seem like they will wear well (as in they are durable). They are the widest shoes I own and very comfortable. Were I to buy another pair, I would buy the wider version, but the normal version is wide enough and still the widest pair of shoes I own. The soles are also completely flat on bottom and have no traction on rocks or anything else. I understand it is supposed to be a "causal" office/work shoe, but it would be nice to have stickier soles.

I see others have given many accolades about these shoes and I have really nothing more to add. For those who are worried about the look of them for formal purposes, I can report that I've worn my black Primal Sawyers to posh get-togethers whilst, surrounded by people in conventional shoes. Rating

Being my first time trying a minimalist barefoot style shoe I am disappointed in the durability. I have only had them for a few months, gradually wearing them to get feet to adapt, some days wearing an hour or less (around town nothing crazy). Have only had them a few months (purchased in May) and already have a hole in the sole (which got bigger quickly once had) I was skeptical about the longevity and durability due to how thin the sole is. I like the feel and wide toe box, but what’s the point if they don’t last very long. I have ordered a pair of the primal runamoc with the mega grip to see how long they last.

Smart looking with all the barefoot benefits

    Rating

I love my Primal Sawyers! They're dressy enough for most situations, but they are soft enough that it's like wearing a pair of light slippers to the office. I have a few pairs of SoftStar shoes, and I mostly alternate these with the Rogues for working in a school office. I especially like that the natural foot shape is there for comfort and foot health, but they don't look like clown shoes at all. The way they are cut kind of hides the wide toe box from anyone who isn't looking too closely. I don't normally care - I wear only barefoot shoes, but in dressier situations it's nice to kind of fly under the radar while still wearing shoes that are healthy and comfortable.

My first pair from 2019, resoled 3 times, uppers finally wearing out. Love the softness and feel of new pair but the leather feels thinner then the older ones, especially around the inside heel reinforcement. I'm concerned that they won't hold up like the old ones.

I bought the wide width sawyer, and its the first shoe i've ever owned that is actually the right fit. I take up every millimeter of that toe box width with my toe spread, it allows my toes to move and spread out in the way they're supposed to. I couldn't be happier with this design, they're so comfortable and look good too. thank you softstar, your the first shoe company to actually make a shoe that fits my feet.

Je vais même par la suite acheter les Runamoc personalisables (English Translation) After several exchanges by e-mail with very friendly and professional contacts, I found my exact size because my feet measure 27 cm, that is to say in the upper part of size 10 which goes up to 27.3 cm.... So, after advice from the elves, I took size 11 and I have no regrets. Very soft shoes, room for the toes. Perhaps even more space than in other brands of barefoot shoes. I recommend. I will even buy the customizable Runamoc later

I love my Sawyers with a deep passion. I have two pair. One pair are in my normal shoe size for Spring, Summer and Fall. The second pair are one size larger and I added the sheepskin liners for Late Fall, Winter, and Early Spring. Both are fantastic and my feet are so happy. Pure love for my feet. Won't leave home without them. (I wear size 40/41 European - my Sawyers are 8U normally (9U when adding liners).

If hobbits wore shoes, they would probably be sporting a pair of these. I have a couple of other pairs of minimalists shoes from another company but these are by far my favorites. They have the widest toe box of any barefoot shoes I own as well as the thinnest soles which makes them super comfy and great for conditioning my feet. Besides all that, they look great. I frequently receive compliments from my clients on how comfortable and attractive they look. I'm already contemplating my next purchase from Soft Star. Thank you for making such a fine product!

    My favorite Softstar shoe

    Rating

I have several different styles of shoes from Softstar (Rogue, Primal RunAmoc, RU Moccasin, Ballerine, Solstice Sandal, Primal Mary Jane, and Fireside Sheepskin Slipper). I am a huge fan! I wore orthopedic shoes starting in my childhood and have always used orthotics, believing they would help my flat feet. They did not. I finally switched to natural footgear in 2020 when I turned 70. I know, I have been late to the party!. My first pair of Softstar were the Primal RunAmoc. I wore these almost every day for 9 weeks as my husband and I drove around Europe and walked/hiked many miles every day. My feet were more comfortable in these shoes than any I have ever owned. I reluctantly decided to try the Sawyer when I found a pair on clearance. This style is my favorite of them all. The toe width is perfect for my feet, the leather is soft and comfy, the laces are the right length, and I can wear them comfortably with my Correct Toes toe spacers. I now own 2 pair of the Sawyer and find they are my go to shoes daily. Love!!!

I've had my one and only pair of Sawyer's for over four years. We've literally travelled the world together, farmed together, laughed together, cried together. These are the best shoes I've ever owned, and were my first foray into barefoot shoes. I've had them resoled once two years ago. I wish I could get the color to pop the way it used to, but maybe I'll just get them some new laces? They're my best buds. Thank you Softstar.

I keep saying this in the hope that someone will read it. I was, today prompted to send a review so I will. The shoes are so good in so may ways, Light, easy to wear, great materials, fantastic workmanship. But they ALWAYS make the toe box too shallow. That means that the toes are pushed over to the middle where there is enough height to fit them in. Kind of defeats the purpose. Lots of width where the toes join the foot, but the actual toe room is small because only the middle can be used. One pair is worse than the other. I used a marble to try and stretch the area next to the stitching but I couldn't get it to stay in place and was largely ineffective. I could get a larger pair, but I don't really like that extra 1/2 inch hanging off the front of my foot for me to trip on. I'll still keep buying softstars, this is my 4th pair, but one day I hope to be ecstatic about a true primal fit. (Yes, I have wedge-shaped feet, and they are not rounded to a point at the top)

I really wanted to like these shoes but they simply did not last. it's been less than four months (purchased Aug. 15, replaced Dec 5th) and I've already worn a hole through the bottom of one shoe and the stitching on the front of both shoes has given out and my toes are now trying to play peekaboo??? unacceptable, yes I'm on my feet all day but I'm not doing construction or anything crazy, how do I three holes in nearly as many months... At $145 dollars for a pair of shoes which are nonvegan, I had much higher expectations for the longevity of these shoes. it feels very disrespectful to these animals to be turned into such flimsy products.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves - Hi Steven - we understand your disappointment that your Sawyers did not have the durability you need. The type of wear you are describing it not typical and tells us that you need a more robust style Softstar or possibly shoes with more abrasion resistant vegan material like you would find in most conventional shoes.  The shoes did cost $145 and to have only lasted 4 months for you is not a good value in your case.  We are reaching out to you directly with some options.

All shoes will eventually wear down with use, but durability can vary greatly from person to person. Softstar shoes can last anywhere from 3 months to 10 years depending on how the shoes are worn and treated. The minimal, glove-like properties of our natural leather shoes promote healthy foot development, balance and body awareness, but our shoes may not be as resistant to abrasion as thickly padded shoes made with multiple layers of dense rubber and synthetic materials.

Wearing sizes that are too big or too small, traversing rough terrain, scraping toes or shuffling feet will cause our shoes to wear down quickly. On the other hand, wearing the proper size, developing a healthy gait and giving your shoes a little care can greatly extend their lifespan. Some of our customers have run over 800 miles with a single pair of RunAmocs and others have passed down their children's shoes 3 or 4 times. Within the shop we even have a few well-loved pairs that are 15 years old and counting! Please be on the lookout for an email from our friendly customer service team. Thank you.
  40. Primal Sawyer - clearance

    Rating

These are my 2nd pair of Softstars and have gotten heavy use over the past 5+months. After my first pair of Merry Janes were not quite right, the Elves suggested going with a primal style. I found these Concord Grape Sawyers in the clearance section with a “cosmetic defect” of a scar in the leather. When I rec’d them, I searched for the scar, but could never figure out where it was. I accidentally bought Primal wide, but it wasn’t a problem as I like to wear toe socks. The moment I put them on and felt the wonderful space and freedom of NOTHING putting pressure on any of my toes was heavenly. Some folks express concern about the look of this shape, but I have gotten plenty of compliments from traditional shoe wearers…but, with as comfortable as these are, I wouldn’t care either way! The ground feel has improved my hiking 100%. I have since added a sheepskin sole for winter wear and a bit of cushion on pavement walking and they are perfect.

    Wonderful comfort

    Rating

While I find the soles on these seem thinner so I feel the ground more, I find these are my favorite of all the Softstar shoes I own, and I own a lot. My feet much prefer the primal width and I find that when I wear correct toes the primal width works better. After several foot surgeries, I am not comfortable walking completely barefoot. However, my feet are comfortable for miles while wearing any Softstar shoe and, in particular, the Sawyers. These will be coming with me to Italy in the Spring where they will be given a workout along with my primal Mary Janes (another absolute favorite!).
  43. Great Fit and comfort - sole wore down quickly

    Rating

I ordered the primal sawyer shoes back in mid July. The shoes arrived quickly and fit wonderfully. I absolutley love the comfortable roomy fit. I also ordered the toe spacers and they fit nicely in this shoe. My only compliant is that I had to send the shoes back after only 3.5 months due to some of the stiching wearing out. The "Elves" waived any repair fee and fixed the stiching for me which I much appreciated. The stiching issue occured because the stiching goes directly through the thin sole so when the shoe sole wore down it left the stiching exposed to wearing through. It seems to me that for the price of these shoes the sole/stitching should last longer then 3.5 months. I am a 69yo male with a bunyon and i don't expose my shoes to hard use. Mostly i wear them around the house, and to walk my dogs on paved surfaces (about 1.5 miles per day). I will likely purchase another pair when the stiching wears through again simply because these are the very best fitting most comfortable shoes I have ever owned.

Wool socks and fleece insoles make my primal sawyers toasty all day.

She and her whole family wear Soft Stars. I have been going slowly in wearing them, as recommended, but I can already feel a difference. Even though I have worn wide toe box shoes for years, they haven’t been wide enough to allow for toe splay. Having the space of the primal shoe makes a big difference.

    Rating

These shoes have ruined me for other shoes. There is nothing out there like them, and I have come to live in them—for walking, hiking, gardening, pretty much everything. They’re so soft that it’s like wearing a pair of socks. And I’m feeling muscles in my toes that I have never felt before. My toes are actually working when I walk, which must be the way it should be. The regular width comfortably supports my wid-ish feet in the toebox, letting my toes spread as much as they want and grip the ground. I feel like I can actually walk faster, I can just sprint along the path a bit with a spring that comes from my own muscles and happy feet feeling the ground. My bunion is happy too, I’ve had no pain at all. And I can feel muscles in my legs work when I walk that I’ve never felt wearing any other shoe. And the most amazing thing is that there is no pronation, indicated by the wear of the shoe. Like I’ve said, I’ve worn them almost constantly since receiving them a little over a month ago. The soles grip really well even though I’ve worn a little bald spot in the ball and the heel. But most amazingly, there is no indication of overpronation in the wear pattern. Every one of my other shoes, including Birkenstocks wear on the inside heal quickly and I soon need new shoes because I’m walking badly with the wear pattern from overpronation. Not true with these. I had always wondered how I could fix my gait to prevent overpronation. Where to even start? But I now think it is caused from shoes that lift the heel and even the whole foot, which I think throws off the posture and spine. I feel so good and healthy and I love feeling all the parts of the ground. I’m getting used to bumps from rocks and sticks. Before I couldn’t really feel the surfaces that would hurt my body like cement, and now try to stick to asphalt and dirt and grass when I walk, which I know is better for my body. But my feet are protected from stickers and pointy things. I’ve even stepped on a very sharp thing, and it just nicked the sturdy Vibram sole,, but didn’t go through the shoe. I am hooked! Do your body good and get some Primals!

    Comfortable and stylish

    Rating

These are more comfortable than you'd think. I was worried given that I am not used to more "barefoot" shoes. The sole provides an ideal balance between being thin enough that you can really feel the ground (such a cool feeling) and the shoes are light, but not too thin that walking or occasional running could be painful. I really like the plum/purple color and there is a lot of toe space, which is awesome. The large toe space makes the shoes look kind of cool, actually. Kind of like stylish clown shoes, haha.

I've been buying Softstar shoes for several years now and the Primals weren't available when I first found the company. I've not had a pair that I didn't like, although it took a little time to pin down my size. I normally wear a 7 wide but do fine with a 6 narrow in this style. Don't worry if the leather is slightly tight over the top of your foot. With a few wears the nubuck will stretch out and feel perfect. The Primals are my top choice in the way that they fit my foot and the Sawyers are the most perfect of all. I wear the primal Merry Janes a lot because they look good with my skirts and dresses but I do have a gap on the inside of my foot that won't go away no matter how tight I have them, so usually end up wearing with socks. I would highly recommend the Sawyers-the only thing I did was change out the laces to a solid color to make them look a little dressier and a little less trail-like. I would love to see a pull-on taller boot with the Primal footbed.

Don't use damp cloth to stretch. Does damage. But Softstar made it right with an exchange (thanks Sue!) since the damp cloth was from their site's instructions, and now that I've worn my second pair a little bit, it's broken in so well that I don't even need to stretch them. They're the best. Sleek, interesting, and above all, they're not the footbinders we're normally expected to wear. After years of struggling with shoes, misalignment, injury, the works, I found minimalist shoes. And after months of research, trying to find a minimalist shoe that worked for my foot's width (US 14 4E), I found the shoes for me. Literally just this shoe. Try 'em if you think they might be what you're looking for.. They're great about returns in my experience, and as far as the shoes, just one last comment to make it clear: I couldn't believe it when I put them on. I'm so happy I found these shoes.

Best shoes on the market, great toe box, made in USA

    Rating

These and the Primal RunAmocs with wide width selected are the best barefoot shoes on the market, and since barefoot/minimalist style shoes are the only shoes you should be willing to wear that makes them the best shoe on the market period and they are even made in the USA, no need to send money to China and help fund their military and government if you want to buy the best pair of shoes! While they are snug at first, they are able to stretch out significantly. I can comfortably wear my Correct Toes in these and spread my toes as wide as I can without any problems after they stretch out. The widest part of my feet, the upper portion of my pinky and big toes (as it should be), measures about 13 centimeters with toes splayed and size 10U Wide fits great, not tight at all AFTER being stretched out. All of Softstar's other models need to be shaped like this and I'd like them to make a safety toe barefoot shoe or boot for those of us that are supposed to wear them for work. I've tried the chukkas and rogues but their toe box is way too narrow to be considered barefoot/minimalist...my old shoes I used to wear before wearing exclusively barefoot style shoes have wider toe boxes. I would like to buy Dash RunAmocs and Moc3 but they look like they have narrow toe boxes too so I'm not even going to bother until they offer Primal width in those too. Softstar obviously knows how to make a proper toe box so I don't know why they only offer narrow, foot deforming toe boxes on other models, especially when having a proper toe box is the most important quality in a barefoot shoe.

    Best shoes for me

    Rating

I bought the size 10U, and compared to other barefoot shoes (manufactured in America, I have not tried European brands), these are a good width for my wide feet. They are good for casual/work settings. The two downsides of this shoe (which is why I only gave 4/5 stars) are that they are hard to wash and they shrink if a lot of water gets on it. I put on the Nikwax spray on it to waterproof it, but I used the water-based stuff which did shrink the shoes a little. It would've been much wiser to use a wax-based waterproofer. I also had to wash it once since the smell got really bad, and that shrunk the shoes basically by another size. The sizing I would say is the biggest downfall of this brand. Although there is a sizing guide, it serves more as a general approach, as each shoe is different in sizing. I bought the Primal RunAmoc's and I had to size up to an 11U since 10U was way too tight, and even the 11U was on the snug-fit end. Also, I should have gotten a size 11U Sawyer to account for the shrinking of the shoes, and my feet spreading out more from wearing barefoot shoes. If the sizing guide were to cater per shoe rather than for all shoes they offer, it would be much better. I would recommend sizing up with the Sawyers if you plan to wash them at some point. Aside from those flaws, these are the best barefoot shoes I could find (I have tried Vivo's, Bearfoot Athletics, Xero which were too narrow for me).

I ordered the Adult Primal Sawyer in wide. This is my first pair of true minimalist shoes. I bought these because I read they were one of the widest toe boxes and yes the wide is very large in the toe box. Just received my second pair of Primal Sawyers (I kind of ruined the first pair when I got stuck out in the rain and my bell bottoms further waterlogged them). I’m going to be extra careful with these. The suede is so beautiful that I’m really going to reserve them for times when there is little chance of harming them! The coffee color is gorgeous, and I also ordered a pair of brown leather laces to switch it up (though I really love the laces they come with). I originally ordered a pair in the narrow width, but now that I’m accustomed to the wider width, the narrow width looks very strange on my feet (imagine that) and is not as comfortable. The elves are always so helpful and kind whenever I have a query, and they’re wonderful cobblers. Most of my shoes are SoftStars now. Little else will do. Thanks so much.

LISTEN, this shoe is so good that I have decided to use it for all purposes. It is the most comfortable shoe that my feet ever felt. It is like putting a glove on them. Also, weight lifting or running is great with them because distribution of weight uniform, as in normal anatomic (barefoot). I have also fell in love with the company, they are really kind and attentive. I have 3 pairs of the Adult Primal Sawyer and I must say that I prefer them over the primal Runamoc because they do not expand as much

I work at a daycare so I'm going from just sitting down to the kids asking for something. So I'm on my feet a lot I have tried so many different kind of shoes but none work with my feet very well. I tried my first pair just over 2 years ago and my feet love me for them I have never looked back. I now have 3 pairs and live them all. I am in my shoes sometimes up to 18 hours and the have never hurt me.

The first time I ordered these, they were too wide in the front and too short. I returned them. But, I still loved the look of them…SO…I measured my bigger left foot again and realized I needed the next size up and not the wide width. After calling them with my exact measurement of foot they said yes, next size up and the narrow width. Black… woman’s size 7 (listed as size 6 1/2 as well). Now they are perfect!!! Thank you Softstar…I get such a kick out of these shoes and they are totally comfortable for walks and look totally cute!!! (I bought the Primal Merry Janes as well at same time…same size…same total comfort and ADORABLE looking…I feel like a ballet dancer in these)

    Versatile and comfortable

    Rating

My first few wearings of my new Primal Sawyers in Regular width were not as I'd hoped. The toe shape doesn't align with where my big toe actually is, so there was extra space at the inside of the toe tip. I also found the sole a little stiff after wearing a more minimal shoe for the previous year. This all changed after I'd worn the shoes a few more times. From the beginning, I've been wearing them with the sheepskin inner soles that I ordered along with the shoes, and now the entire arrangement seems to fit perfectly. The soles no longer feel too thick or heavy, my toes spread happily in the forefoot, and because the leather has stretched a bit, I can now wear my thickest wool socks in the Sawyers, even with the sheepskin liner (and that's fortunate, because we're having a pretty cold spring). There's still a little extra room at the inside of the big toe, but it doesn't feel clumsy anymore. Surprisingly, the Sawyers have proved to be great for hiking. I wasn't so sure because there's no lug on the soles, but even so, I have been able to hike very easily in slippery, wet and muddy conditions. So the versatility of these shoes is much greater than I had expected. The one issue I still have is that it's not possible to tighten the Sawyer enough around the ankle, so on long downhill stretches my feet slide into the front of the shoe. I have been able to mitigate that by lacing the shoe differently and tying the laces around my ankles. That's worked so far to keep my toes away from the end of the shoe. All in all, I am very happy with the Sawyers and hope to get many years of wear out of them.

I got my pair of Primal Sawyers in Loden last week and finally got a chance to wear them all day yesterday. The wide toe box and zero drop is just what I wanted, and the laces make for a perfect fit. Loden is a great color, too, because it goes with anything and everything I wear. The best part is the fit. Straight out of the bag they felt like ¨butta¨ on my feet.

I have wide feet and bunions and trying to find shoes that fit my feet is difficult. The Primal Sawyer is perfect. The quality is great. It is so soft and comfortable. The primal shape really gives me the toe room I have been longing for. I have the 8U in wide and it fits me great. I can even wear my correct toes. I wear the Primal Sawyer without socks. If I wore socks I might need to size up. I hope to order more primal shoes from SoftStar in the future. I always try to buy made in USA also so happy they are made here in the USA.

So far, I have two pairs of Sawyer in Black and Loden, will probably pick up a pair in Coffee too. They are super light and can be dressy enough for casual office wear. I wish Softstar would offer them or something similar in a smooth leather to dress them up a bit more. I have switched all my footwear to Softstar since finding them recently, their primal shoes are the best fitting shoes I've found for my feet and I'm seeing a major positive transformation of my feet because of it (along with Correct Toes).

First review I’ve ever written! Got the wide black/gray in size 11 after printing the size guide and following the instructions. Right on the verge of a 10 but I have wide plateau feet so decided to size up. Love how much space I have to spread my toes. Usually my second to last toes always get squished. They look like clown shoes, yes, and my boyfriend makes fun of me but he also says now he wants a pair after listening to me rave about them. I’ve never worn any closed toe shoes this comfortable!
  88. Love-hate relationship with these shoes

    Rating

To start with, these shoes are the best fitting shoes I've owned and I enjoy wearing them. However, despite their width, they still do not give enough room for my little toe (even in the size above what I usually get, with a thumb width spare in length). Also, I've now owned two pairs of these shoes and they both have lasted only three months (I was given the second pair as a replacement, but still...). The first time there was a hole in the leather, and the second time the sole wore through completely. I expect a £130 pair of shoes to last much, much longer.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hello Tom thank you for your feedback! If your soles are wearing out after 3 months, we would like to suggest you try the Primal RunAmoc or wide Switchbacks which have a more expensive construction and designed for more action. Soles wearing out is a possibility with any shoes, and while some people go through shoes quicker than others - it seems the Sawyer's casual design is not the best match for your use case. Please reach out to our customer service team and we would be happy to help you.

I'm obsessed with my feet and my shoes, and I'm on the search for the ultimate shoe, so I can express my feet fully. These are my first fully leather shoes and I would say that for me the leather is the perfect material for shoes. Its super breathable, I wear them without socks and the smell gets better the more I wear them. They are also super soft and they conform to he shape of my foot. Even though my foot is not exactly the shape of the shoe, the shoe does force my foot into a new form . the sole is perfect width in my opinion. I also got the leather laces which make it even more pleasant to the foot and they blend in with the shoe beautifully. I would love to see a lacing system that hugs the heel area a little more rather than just the forefoot. I would also like to see more room in the shoe around the pinky toe and also around the middle of the shoe as well, but as I mentioned before, the shoe pretty much compensates for and shape because of its flexibility, Thank you for your service.

I bought these hoping to find my new favorite shoes and I have! I went with the advice of others and ordered the smaller size of my "right between 2 sizes" feet and they were perfect. Debated getting a narrow since I don't require wide shoes in general, but went with the regular and love. The laces make it easy to customize fit and I couldn't love them more. Hoping to purchase some sheepskin insoles for winter. Also, my 13yr old says "they're kind of funny looking but in a cool way" :)
  92. Lovin' these shoes!

I bought two pairs, black and brown; they are my everyday shoes. I like the thicker sole - it wears longer, and offers more insulation against either hot or cold surfaces. These fit well. Nice and loose around the toes but tie up to fit snugly around the instep - no sliding around of my foot inside the shoe. They are so comfortable and light, occasionally I look down and realize I am wearing shoes, but my feet had not noticed.

    Rating

I got these in purple which is a unique color for a shoe. The leather is very comfortable. I have a wide toe box and a narrow heel so I love that the laces actually hold the shoe on my foot. I wish the shoe didn't get so wide at the top of the big toe but I'm learning to adjust to my big shoes. I waterproofed the shoes with Nikwax because I am outside with kids most days. The shoes are not the warmest but I also don't like wearing socks so it's my own fault.

These are the softest and lightest shoes I've ever had. I added leather laces and I find them to be more comfortable and better looking than the ones that came with the shoes. The shape gets an A+. I wish the sole had more texture for traction, like the trail sole on the RunAmocs I got a few years ago. I also wish that they came up higher over the ankles for coverage with cropped pants. For comparison, the narrow primal is like a regular width classic Birkenstock Arizona and the regular primal is much wider. The lacing makes it easy to get a secure fit on narrow insteps.

I really love these shoes. They are super comfortable. I've been struggling with some plantar fasciitis, so I ordered the "correct toes" with these shoes. I originally purchased the standard toe box, but then questioned if maybe I could have ordered the narrow toe box and still had enough room to wear the correct toes. I ordered another pair with the narrow toe box and had plenty of room, so I returned the pair with the standard toe box. The narrow toe box looks a bit less funny, lol. Anyway, if you tend to have a narrower foot and are wondering which toe box will work for you, especially if you're going to use the correct toes as well, I recommend ordering both and then returning the one you don't want.

Well made. Customer service was good. Gotta love it bein made domestically. When I first unboxed em I thought wow these do look kinda clowny with that toe box, even in the narrow version. The more I look at em now tho the less they stand out. I do get a lot of comments on em out and about, usually along the lines of "those look comfy." Having worn skate shoes all my life they dont feel all that different in respect to the sole, but the toe box does make for easier wear. At the very first the top of the shoe felt somewhat intrusive but theyve stretched properly to accommodate the height of my toes now. If you purchase these I would definitely recommend buying the spray as well. I wouldnt brave the elements in these even after protecting them - they dont seem all that durable - but they suit their purpose well for casual streetwear. God bless ????????

These are my first pair of Soft Stars after buying several pairs for my kiddo, and my first barefoot shoes outside of Vivos. I think I'll be switching over permanently because: - the simple construction makes them easily repairable by most cobblers - they're really light! The material upper and foam soles are much lighter than other shoes with heavier rubber soles The tire box is really wide and I could have fit a smaller size. When the soles wear down I'll have my local cobbler size them down for me. I expect these will last me a long time and cut down on my carbon footprint.

  110. Pretty much perfect

    Rating

Thank you, Softstar, for making really the first shoes I've ever had that properly fit my wide feet. Admittedly, I could have got there sooner if I'd got my Primal Runamocs a size up, so maybe that's a tip: if your measurements are at the upper limit of a size, you may want to go bigger. That's what I did with these and the sizing's great. After all the years of disappointment with other barefoot shoes, I have to admit I had my doubts initially about these. My toes are still touching the sides and I made some effort to stretch them with shoe stretchers, though I'm not sure they did much. At any rate, when I finally started walking around in them, I couldn't have been happier. This really is some amazing new world for me: shoes that don't hurt my feet at all. Or, well, I could have been just slightly happier if Softstar were able to offer them in an earthier colour: a more reddish brown or a traditional desert boot sand. That's my only reason for not granting all five stars. In the end, I got pebble and they're still attractive enough that the other day a group of people started saying how great they looked. I agree, by the way and I don't think anyone should worry about these looking weird, because they're just not. It's all the other shoes that don't fit right that are weird, and deeply so.
  111. Expensive, but nice. Helps my bunion.

    Rating

About five months ago, a bunion on my left foot essentially crippled me. The pain was so bad that I had to literally hop around. I got a set of CorrectToes to begin fixing the degradation, but none of my shoes would work with the CorrectToes in. My feet are wide, and the Adult Primal Sawyer (size 12) manages to allow both my feet and the toe spacer in. They have no padding underneath, so I need to be mindful and make sure I don't heel-walk....I need to stay on the ball or mid-sole of my foot. If they weren't so expensive, I'd get a few more pairs. I'll need to, eventually, as normal shoes won't work anymore. Definitely recommend, if you are familiar with minimalist shoes. If you're not, then there will be a learning curve so you don't damage your heel.
  112. Thanks for making the widest shoe in the world, but....

    Rating

First of all, thanks to the Elves for a smoothly expedited return process. I initially bought the loden, not knowing what the word meant (just me? OK) and thinking from the photos it was going to be a kind of sandy, natural leather. Not sure, but I think the color match in the pictures has since been improved. Anyway... I'd still like that sandy color to happen one day, but in the meantime I got pebble, which will do and I might even grow to love it. Certainly looks good with jeans. The shoes, in the wider model, are...just about wide enough for my feet. I really appreciate the space for the big toes. I could possibly do with just a tiny bit more space for the pinkies, but the very soft nubuck leather may stretch out. I might even give them a nudge in that regard, because I'm truly sick of having my little toes tortured by shoes, especially the right one, which is sore. Admittedly, the shoes as they are already look unusual by normal standards (I actually think they look really good), and I appreciate Softstar sticking their necks out to even this extent. But I still look with envy at Henry VIII's fan-shaped shoes in Holbein portraits. Seems wide, flat shoes used to be the norm, even the height of fashion. And I can't help wondering, using something like the Hawthorne style, which doesn't have a protruding sole, whether Softstar couldn't make an even wider ultra-primal shoe. That would also allow you to offer primals with a leather sole.

    Rating

This is an update to my initial review - I tried the Primal Sawyers and loved them, but sent them back because I didn't know how often I'd wear them since the sole isn't winter-friendly. Then within days, Soft Star came out with the lilac version, and I couldn't resist. Just have to say that the color is amazing - beautiful and vibrant but understated at the same time. Feels just as versatile as a gray shoe but more interesting and unique. And I'm still shocked at how well they fit. The left one is a little snug over my big toe but the leather is so supple I imagine it'll stretch in no time. (And if for some reason it doesn't, I trust that the Elves will be as helpful as they always are.)

No regrets-would order again in a heartbeat!

    Wonderful! natural foot shape

    Rating

First, this is my first time trying the primal foot shape. I ordered several styles, both primal and regular and returned all of them except the Sawyer. I have narrow ankles but have toes that splay. A normL wide/regular width shoe is too big in the ankle and midfoot, while the narrows would squish my toes and cause pain in the arch of my foot. I was very surprised that the primal narrow fit my foot shape almost exactly with a secure ankle and midfoot (so the shoe doesnt flop around) while my toes can splay and move comfortably. Wonderful! My only complaint (more of a comment) is that I work on my feet on concrete floors and could really use a thicker sole for my work shoes. I have added several layers of suede to the inside sole which is an improvement, but concrete is rough when you are walking and moving on it all day. This also makes it a challenge because I would love some merry janes, but the primal merry jane has the thinnest sole of them all (not a bad thing if outside or on varying surfaces, not on concrete). I now own two pairs of sawyers in two sizes (both narrow). One has sheepskin and room for extra socks and the other I can wear barefoot. I love them, they look great and feel great. And just as good leather should, they look even better as the leather wears and patinas. I would also like to point out that I contacted customer service by email over my sizing Qs and received a phone call within hours from an elf who answered all my Qs and spent a lot of time working through them. Wonderful customer service and a generous return policy considering the hand-made nature of Softstar shoes.

  120. insanely comfortable shoes but sad there's no tread

    Rating

Up until I tried these shoes I always thought I had ridiculously wide feet, but now I think I actually have average or slightly wide feet with widely-spread toes that have miraculously not been deformed (too much) by wearing 'regular' shoes for so many years. Even wide width non-Primal Soft Stars don't fit my feet well because the toe boxes are quite pointy. I am SO glad they took the risk to start making shoes in the Primal shape, and I hope they never stop. After reading a lot of reviews I suspected that I might need a narrow width in the Primal Sawyer. I was told by an elf that because I always buy wide widths in other Soft Star styles, I should go with the regular Sawyer, but I don't think they were taking into account the fact that I needed a wide in other styles because the front end of the toe boxes are so narrow and I was trying to compensate for that. Turns out the narrow Sawyer in my usual length (I wear a women's 9 and got the 8U) fits perfectly even with my high insteps. I also have narrow heels and they fit well in that area too. It's seriously like they were custom made for my feet. Sadly, I’ll likely be sending them back even though I love them because I just don’t know when I’d wear them. I would only use them in wet/freezing weather (the rest of the time I wear huaraches with or without socks), and the lack of tread wouldn’t work well in those conditions. Speaking of which - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a Primal Phoenix! This would be absolutely groundbreaking. I live in a climate where boots are a necessity five months out of the year and by the end of winter my feet are not happy. I have three pairs of minimalist but too-narrow boots, including an ancient pair of Phoenix boots, that all crunch my toes. If you started making Primal Phoenixes (or something similar where the soles are stitched on, not just glued, which I'm not a fan of for a variety of reasons) my feet would be forever grateful.

    Exactly what I wanted

    Rating

I am very happy with these shoes. They are very light, yet durable. I do think the area for the big toe is a little more than needed, but that's ok. It sure beats having it too narrow like just about every other shoe out there. I really like how they fit nice around the heel. About the only bad thing I can possibly say about these, is that they seemed to grab, if that makes sense, on things like grass. I found I had to consciously lift my foot higher than normal to get over grass or even carpet, otherwise the toe liked to grab. This doesn't seem to be the case now that I've worn them a few weeks. I don't know if I've gotten used to them, or if the sharp edge of the new sole has rounded slightly. That is about the only thing I would do to improve these shoes, is slightly chamfer the leading edge of the sole, so that it doesn't grab on things.

I love the new Loden color, it is absolutely beautiful! Such a nice earthy color! The sawyer's are one of my favorite Softstar shoes! (Moc3 &Primal Runamoc & Fireside slippers being the others). I love the softness of the nubuck leather, and having the space for proper toe splay is great! (I also have the sawyer's in black and the green from last year). The shoes are great for walking on pavement to a trail, and I like the option to wear them with or without socks. And I love the soft cushy laces, they are so nice to tie!(instead of annoying skinny ones). You can also wear correct toes if you want to. The style is much cuter in person, as are the leather colors, and it is a pleasure to wear such a nice foot shaped shoe! And to have the toe space is just so amazing!!!!!!! 5 stars for last years and this years versions :)

My feet are triangular shaped, with an extemely wide toe splay, narrow heels, and a low instep. Compared to my wide-width Dash Runamocs, the regular Primals have a much roomier toebox. I would love it if it could be even roomier to better accomodate my wide splay and troublesome big toe, which still hurts in the Primals... Perhaps my gait exacerbates the pain? That said, the black nubuck is soft and may expand more over time. I've been wearing it with the sheepskin insoles as well, so perhaps removing them might create more room for the big toe. Still, the Primals are the widest shoes I have by far, and I look forward to more styles with the Primal sole. Maybe a waterproof pair of winter boots? :) Thanks very much to Elves Alison, Crystal and Katie for your excellent and patient customer service.

I am loving these shoes! I have spent a few weeks in them, these are just lovely to have on the feet! And I am not easily impressed. Some background. I'm a shoe searcher. Early adopter on barefoot running, back when people thought it was still weird. Bought the very first VFF. Have owned and extensively used many minimalist shoes, including but not limited to: vivobarefoots (dress and casual), carets, tadeevos (sneakers and derby dress shoes) (wore through a lot of these), bedrock cairns, unshoes, topo sneakers, Lems, many different Sanuks (my regular go to shoe), olukai flip flops, my bare feet; searching for the right combo of toe splay and walkability. I never bought softstars because the last time I checked their website many years ago I thought the shoes looked bad, like a leather sack, and for some reason I had crossed softstar off my list on potential shoemakers.. Well, not anymore! Newer models look awesome! Softstar leads the pack! The closest shoe I've had to the Sawyer was one pair of very early vivobarefoot that was super wide and duckfooted looking, back when they were a new experimental company. I think it was the early 2000s. I've kept that pair going for a couple decades, patching it up with shoe goop from the sodhopper guy, because of the splay, the beautiful wideness. Because I mainly wore them at work, they didn't get thrashed. This softstar shoe is even a tad wider, and feels better on the foot than that beloved vivobarefoot! it's also feather light, yet sturdy feeling. I think it is even more pleasant to have on the foot than the primal runamocs, although for hiking, or trail running I might still go primal runamoc. also seems a bit roomier for a sheepskin pad for next winter. one could definitely run in these sawyers. I have. it feels like running through a mossy dream. There's nothing on the market that I know of that allows full toe splay! WHY? WHY!? To me, it's a beautiful thing to let the toes move with absolute freedom in the shoe. I cannot do that with ANY OTHER of the barefoot shoes. Sandals, yeah, but sometimes I really want or society demands an enclosed shoe. Yardwork. Some hikes. Winter. Weddings. Court. Etc. Also, to be fair, although i hate most shoes, these make me register zero objections when they are on my feet all day. even better sockless. way better sockless. Even the vivobarefoot duckfoot shoe that i wore to work for many years has my toes graze the edge of the shoe at full splay, which was ok, but, suboptimal? why would I want that?! Sawyers have that extra couple millimeters to make things right. Sure, they look a little weird, but so freaking what? they are the RIGHT SHAPE. I plan to give all of softstar models a try, because the workmanship, the gorgeous leather, the design, all deserve our attention. Everyone in the nation should be OUT of their narrow "normal" shoes and experiencing actual foot comfort. I think the nation would be better off if everyone's feet were relaxed. Thank you softstar!!!! I believe you are doing vital work! I hope that your "crazy looking" shoes become the norm someday! I LOVE YOU!!!!

I wasn’t new to Softstar when I bought the Sawyers, I have a pair of the ballerina flats that were a gift from a dear friend of mine and I adored them. I started developing issues with my feet due to my job and standing 10-14 hours a day for the last 10 years. I decided to try the Sawyers for the wide toe box. I ordered the original and the toe box was way too big (keep in mind I have narrow feet annnnnd my toes have been crammed in conventional shoes for way too long, and also the website does explain everything about the size and fit of their shoes, I just glossed over some sections I should have read better) but I sent them back and ordered the narrow pair and boom...DREAM FIT. I now have 3 pairs of these, a pair of Mary Janes and the ballerina flats of yore. These shoes (all of the styles, actually, but this review is about the Sawyers ;) have eliminated my foot pain, my back pain, and my hip pain has also lessened. I will be a SoftStar customer until the end of time at this point! Thanks so much! I highly recommend SoftStar to anyone and everyone.

I see I am not the only one who calls them clown shoes. Mine are size 14 so there is not escaping the clown factor. That said, I love them. I was looking for an "I am inside all day" pandemic shoe and these are perfect. I've only had them a few weeks, but I really enjoy them.

Mostly great — SUPER wide toe box

    Rating

I ordered the star color because it’s fun. That also magnifies the clownish effect of the very, very, very wide toe box, so it makes me a little self-conscious. They’re very comfortable and they are fun. I’m also a little concerned about the extra width at the front being a tripping hazard at some point. It’s not like I wasn’t warned. This may be the first shoe I’ve ever owned that I thought might be a bit TOO wide in the toes, but that’s a refreshing change.

I have always had to buy 2E or 4E width shoes to stay comfortable, so these shoes are perfect! I have never had such comfortable shoes...it is like wearing slippers or socks. My feet stay just the right temperature even when it is warm out. The soles are lasting very very well: I have worn them nearly every day for 9 months and they show only minimal wear. Will definitely be buying other colors!

    Wonderful toe width!

    Rating

These shoes get tops from me for the toe width. I love it and I also like the flat sole. I think that they are cute and if they are clownish to someone, then that is their problem. I am grateful for the toe relief that these provide. I found that cold conductivity through the sole to be intense and have added the wool insert for cold days. However that takes up precious toe space. The leather is nice a soft. I am not very young and am definitely not in the 10,000 steps a day category, so I am surprised that the soles are already showing wear. I am disappointed that they aren't going to last as long as I thought for the price I am less enthused about the leather height over the toes. It feels too tight for accommodating correct toes and after two months of wear I am still hoping they will stretch that direction more. I am also disappointed by the shoes instability on uneven ground. My heel slips inside the shoes very much reducing my confidence in keeping my feet under me. I have tried tying the laces tighter to prevent heel slippage but that did not do anything besides cause pain on the top of my foot. I think that thicker padding under the tongue could be an improvement. I would consider getting these shoes again but I need something for rougher terrain. I would like these to be part of a wardrobe of shoes for a variety of uses. These would be my sidewalk shoes. If I had other shoes to fit the need I would give these four stars.

These are my favorite shoes. They look distinctive. They're super comfortable. I love the way they hug my heel and under my ankle. I love the leather inner. The upper material is loose and floppy, making them not quite snug enough for running (I prefer my Xeros for that.), but they are roomy and comfortable. For comparison, I also have a pair of RunAmocs - they are much lower across the top of my feet. Not uncomfortably so, but my toe nails are wearing a hole through the leather on top of my toes. The Primals do not have this issue.

    Sawyers are great!

    Rating

I ordered the sawyers in coffee color. They fit and feel wonderful. I also added the sheepskin liner for cooler winter weather, and there is plenty of room with the liners inserted. These are my favorite of the Softstar shoes. (I also own and wear daily, a pair of the Chukkas as work boots). I have two wishes for the "perfect" shoe..... I hope Softstar will offer the Chukka with a primal sole, and the Sawyer in the smooth hickory leather. I would definitely buy each of those! I'm hooked on Softstar shoes and I plan on these being the only footwear I buy now on! Thanks for the great products and customer service.

  136. Keep Expanding Offerings with Primal Sole

    Rating

Previous to SoftStar's release of the Primal Sole, I had to buy all my shoes custom from Germany made due to feet that were splayed from walking barefoot. The zero drop primal sole is the best, the BEST! HOORAY! And the Sawyer is even better than the Primal RunAmok, since it appears that the top is sewn to the sole rather than just glued. I had bad luck with the glue coming undone relatively quickly from the RunAmoks I bought. Thus far, the Sawyer has held up nicely. I previously also owned a pair of Hawthorne Chukkas from SoftStar, and the sole wore away faster than was ideal. The Sawyer has a more durable sole, not being as soft, so I hope it will last longer, as one of the issues with minimal shoes is their short tenure before one's socks are exposed to the elements. Perhaps SoftStar would consider offering a variety of sole widths, similar to Luna Sandals? A thicker sole would also be ideal for the winter months when the cold can easily leak through a thin strip of rubber. Either way, I will continue to purchase Primal Sole varieties from SoftStar, and hope they continue to expand their offerings, perhaps into a winter boot with waterproof potential? Just an idea. I'm just SPITBALLIN' OVAH HEAH! Thanks for what you do.

have worn these for over a month now, and own two pairs of the primal runamoc. while i love both versions of the primal, i prefer the sawyer. they appear to be more durable than the runamocs, despite being meant for more casual use. The problem I have with the runamocs is that the leather is too soft. over time, the heel cup on the runamocs would stretch and ultimately tear within a few months. i have no such problem with the sawyers (yet). Note: i am very rough on my shoes; I am a low voltage electronics technician and i wear these shoes for 8 hours+ in all kinds of environments. needless to say, i am very happy that I have found a company that creates a genuinely wide toebox on its minimalist shoes. 138. Finally Real Wide Width Shoes

    Rating

After 50 years of cramming my 8E feet (about 4.25") into other so-called "wide" shoes, I finally found a pair that fits in the Primal Sawyer. Frankly, I would wear almost anything that finally fit. Thankfully, the Elves at Softstar took the time to design a nice looking shoe. I like the minimalist style and minimalist (but fully adequate) packaging--most which is compostable or recyclable. The shoes were immediately comfortable (although a little snug in the rise at the laces for me, but alas, those are my feet). Looking at them, you immediately know that these are not some slap-a-wide-sticker-on-any-shoe charlatans. The foot bed looks more like a paddle which gives actual bona fide ROOM for toes to naturally spread out (gasp) even for those us us with gifted feet. I cannot comment on durability (just got them) but seemed carefully made.

Abundant thanks for this design that honors my feet and will give me comfort while giving my feet the freedom to be as they were created. Namaste.

I've been dreaming of buying these shoes for more than a year, and I finally did. I bought the blue with stars, at first got the wrong size (I bought a m8/w9 Regular and it was too long, I usually wear a women's 8.5 wide in "regular" shoes) but the return was fast and easy. Always great customer service! I reordered one size smaller and they fit beautifully. They're gorgeous, soft, and oh so comfy. I wore them on a short hike (4 miles on a walking path) with no issues at all, the first day I wore them! I don't think they'd be great in damp weather or really cold weather but that's ok. Only thing I didn't like isn't with the shoes - I ordered extra laces and they didn't arrive in my shoe package. I'm contacting customer support about this though and I have no doubt they'll figure it out for me! :) Thank you for great shoes and great service, Elves!

I was worried about how these shoes would function. I have a neuromuscular disorder and RA, which causes me to have loose joints and I tend to fall down a lot. I am more than thrilled with these shoes, and am ordering a new pair of the runamocs for myself for Christmas because of how awesome my Primal Sawyers are. Honestly, they do look like clown shoes - the toe box is huge, but I can't say enough about how the extra wide toe box helps me with "gripping" the ground and staying upright even when moving over uneven terrain. The soles are thin, but I haven't noticed any issues walking around on my gravel road or out in the fields. The leather is super soft, and the minimalist design looks awesome with a pair of jeans or leggings and chunky socks. The flexibility of the shoe is fantastic, and I am shocked at how well I can walk in these! I will recommend measuring your feet like they say - I am between a 9 and a 9.5 US women's - depending on the shoe, and the U8 fit a little loosely, but is easily fixed with a tighter lacing. The extra room allows me to wear chunkier socks for cold weather, so I'm not unhappy with the extra bit of space.

    Rating

Really like my Primal Sawyers (coffee). They're my first minimalist/barefoot style shoe, and I'm very pleased with them. Very comfortable, very lightweight, they go with most outfits and settings (work, church, out about town, etc.), and easy to pack up/store. For sizing, since I'm in-between and have wider feet, I went with a 13U in regular primal width, and it fits perfect (I normally wear a size 12 with shoes); I don't think a 12U with narrow primal width would've been comfortable for me. Personally, I do recommend getting suede cleaner and suede waterproofer (whether you order it here or get another brand from somewhere else is up to you). The material does show marks quite easily (especially if you're a little clumsy like me and trip on stuff haha), so to keep them looking fresh, a little bit of cleaning and waterproofing goes a long way.

This is the first - and possibly only- shoe that has ever truly fit my foot shape. My feet are very wide (about 4.25”) and narrower in the heel and these shoes match my “duck feet” wonderfully. I bought the size that I measured at and those will be a good size for warmer weather here. (I stuffed the toe with a dry facecloth overnight and this helped the leather up front stretch just enough to fit my big toe’s height.) I am going to order up a size or two so I can wear thick socks and a liner with them during our cold weather. I hope Softstar comes out with more types of shoes in this same base! (A low winter boot, perhaps?) The customer service was superb even before buying. Don’t hesitate to email them - the Elves were very helpful and responded quickly! Thank you!

My Softstar Review and Sizing Info

    Rating

Softstar makes my favorite shoes. I hope this review persuades you to pull the trigger and buy a pair. I also hope this helps you avoid sizing problems. Quality of material 11 out of 10 - I’ve never felt better quality leather. Btw Softstar, any plans to make wallets? Comfort 11 out of 10 - The most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. Fit 11 out of 10 - Fits like a glove, when you get the right size. Weight 11 out of 10 - The lightest shoes I own. I bet the only more lightweight shoes are those high-performance running shoes for athletes. Customer Service 10 out of 10 - They are so friendly, helpful, and quick whenever I have a question or a problem. Environment 10 out of 10 - They’re so committed to the environment. And I love that they only use ONE piece of paper for my entire order. Construction 8.5 out of 10 - The soles are starting to get unglued on my oldest pair (Primal RunAmocs). No real problems yet, but I’m concerned it will get worse. Sizing 6 out of 10 - Pretty all over the place. Part of the reason I’m writing this review. I have the Primal RunAmocs in 10U, the Primal Sawyers in 11U, and the Dash RunAmocs in 12U. They all fit amazingly! I got the Hawthorne Chukkas in 11U wide based on a review I read, but I should have gotten the Hawthorne Chukkas in 12U WIDE (they’re too tight, but I wore them a bunch before really realizing it - going to keep trying to stretch them out once it’s not so hot out). Repairs 5 out of 10 - I think only the Chukkas can be resoled. It might be just a limitation of minimalist shoes. I’d love it if they came up with some ingenious way to make all of them resole-able, though. My SoftStar shoes: Primal RunAmoc 10U Regular - on clearance in 2019 (probably from 2018) Adult Hawthorne Chukka 11U Wide - SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN 12U WIDE - During a sale November 2019 Adult Primal Sawyer 11U Regular - During a sale July 2020 Adult DASH RunAmoc 12U Regular - During a sale July 20, - Originally bought 11U Regular, then exchanged for 12U Regular Overall, my favorite shoes and one of my favorite groups of people to give my hard-earned money to. I'm a huge Softstar fan. Not only are these the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, I'd say they're the ONLY comfortable shoes I've ever worn (other than my pair of Softstar chukkas). Freakishly lightweight, the only issue I have is that the leather is a bit thinner than I would like. However, it hasn't been a problem yet. Besides, even thin leather is still super tough. They also fit great, though I had to size down on these compared to what their sizing chart says.

  152. Great, but needs sturdy option

    Rating

The are the most comfortable shoes I've ever found and the only ones wide enough for my feet. The shoe design is different than you'll be used to as the sole is completely flat, no slight curve at the front to assist the toe roll when walking. It's almost like a little paddle that sticks out in front of your toes. With that the upper front of the shoe angles down over the toes and leaves awkward space in front of the toes...but if you ordered smaller size then your toes would be pinched and the thin leather might wear through fast. Same at the back, the shoe doesn't hug the curve of your heel but rather angles away from it making almost too much room behind the heel. This is fine for a casual shoe once you're used to them. The comfort outweighs these small issues. I would however love to see a strong canvas version of these shoes so I could have something more sturdy to wear hiking or camping. The super thin brushed leather is not something I want to ruin. A sturdy canvas version might hold up longer and I wouldn't care as much about getting dirty. With that said, I would still buy another pair, but I'd rather more material options in this same style to suit different uses. Primal sole outdoor boot too please?

True wide toebox with barefoot feel

    Rating

This is the only "normal" shoe I have found on the market that actually has a wide toe box, is shaped like a foot, and delivers a true barefoot feel. I love my five-finger shoes, but these Primals are, you know, more normal looking. I got the thinner sole and just wear these everywhere. I also have some mild scoliosis and have found that the feet feeling the ground is really important for helping to manage the muscle imbalances. I can feel the ground in these shoes. In a new experiment I tried, I can straighten my spine by just focusing on flattening my feet on the floor. Can't do that in Nikes. Not saying these would solve your body problems, just saying if you want a true natural feel and space for your toes to spread, this is the shoe. I always need a wide shoe, but don't actually have wide feet - just very square toe pattern and a skinny ankle. So I ended up going with the narrow version - the regular is really wide in the toe box.

    Weird, but not too

    Rating

I have weird broad toes and metatarsal heads that make me almost unable to wear any shoes. These are comfortable. Tons of room. They are shaped like they're trying to fit a lot of toe in there, but not loud enough to bring attention to it. People don't notice my shoes unless I bring up their characteristics and people may double-take, and say, "Oh! Yeah, they look a little weird...but still nice looking." So, they are winners in my book. They are well-made enough, but they won't survive hard living (they are nice lounge moccasins with rubber soles and good stitching), but walking streets and going to office work or school and they should last well.

For most of my life I have worn work boots. A couple of years ago my feet started to become painful and eventually required 5-10 minutes of stretching every morning before I could really walk. I tried a couple of support products but eventually came to the conclusion that my feet were just weak. I received the primal Sawyers and a pair of Correct Toes 6 weeks ago. Against all advice from trusted professionals, I did not transition in any way. It is an eye opening experience. These shoes allow my feet to move freely in all ways...as nature intended. The plantar facia and Achilles pain that I experienced with my work boots has not disappeared but it has subsided and has been replaced with the satisfying ache of muscles that had been neglect for many years. If that wasn't enough, I am very happy with the build quality of these shoes. I use the Sawyers every day, all day at my shop. Haven't spilled any paint on them yet, but it'll happen. I use them for hiking (something I haven't done in a while as it hurt too much). I use them for gardening and I use them for weight lifting. I haven't had them for all that long, but they have held up well to my abuse with hardly any indication that they are actually on my feet. Very happy!

I love these shoes! Thank you! I measured my feet per instructions and ordered accordingly and got the perfect fit. They were a bit snug on my third toe, which is long and a common problem for me, so I contacted customer service and they advised they would stretch to comfort- they have! I decided to buy the narrow version despite my feet being 11cm wide and 25cm long with wide toe splay, I was advised to get the normal width (size 8U). However, I believe narrow was the perfect choice (8U). The Nubuck is so soft that it is comfy like a cloud and not too snug anywhere. I was on the lower end of the sizing recommendation so if you are near the upper limit I would suggest to size up. Please add more styles with the primal foot shape!!!!! They are the only truly barefoot, foot-shaped, wide enough for my wide toes shoes that I have found, other than custom. I am living in these and I would love more options. I am surprisingly pleased with the style of these shoes and am just so happy to have shoes that actually fit for once! This is my first purchase from Softstar, because all non-primal shaped shoes do not work for my foot shape. Cheers! Buy, they are much cuter in person! P.S. I go the black and it is more charcoal with true black accents and I like that.

I really love my mocs - wear them all the time, but wish they had the old plastic covering that they used to on the suede 10 years ago, or used bullhide, so they'd last longer. The mocs still put up with a lot from me - I wear them in the rain, and out on gravel and everywhere. But, they are not really meant for that with their suede sole - thus my purchase of the Primals. Since this isn't a moc review... I get comments about how great my Primal's look - I bought the burgundy and the color is fantastic. But, then they look closer and say the look a little like clown shoes. This is due to the wonderfully wide toe box. So, gotta take the bad (clown looks) with the good - great toe box, great color. I also have normal/narrow feet and got the narrow shoe - which is plenty wide enough - so glad I didn't get the regular width. Too much sole for me, but anything other than a moc has too much sole for me, and the elves always seem to fade out shoes with enough sole to last, but little enough to be comfy (bullhide is a little thick, but wonderful - how about putting that on this shoe?)
  174. Simply the best

    Rating

These shoes are absolute perfection. They were comfortable right out of the box with no break in needed. The sole is the perfect balance of cushioning from stones etc and ground feel. The toe box finally allows my pinky toe and big toe to spay naturally and has taken away all previous foot pain. I've been walking with them for a week straight and counting. My feet will accept nothing less now. And I’ve been wearing barefoot shoes for sometime now which has helped with my Planter Fasciitis. But still found the toe boxes on many different brands to be too narrow for my right foot and also found the cushion to be insufficient while stepping on a random stone etc... ouch. But the sole on these is wonderful. It cushions without giving up ground feel. I love the suede liner. It doesn’t give me blisters on the balls of my feet as other liners have when worn barefoot. The nubuck leather outside is soft and comfy. And I added the green and black laces to the black sawyer and really like how it looks. Going to be ordering the sheepskin insole for the cooler months ahead. And yes they do have a “clown”shoe look compared to modern shoes but I got over that rather quickly as my feet felt great. And I don’t think the shape is that much different than a birkenstock As a chef standing long hours on my feet everyday with previous pain these are a welcomed relief. And honestly when have we all become brainwashed that our feet are rounded or pointy??! I’m so happy the primal line has been extended to this model. As I loved my ramblers but my pinky toe just didn’t fit! I wouldn’t change a thing about this shoe Softstar elves. Keep up the good work!
  175. Most comfortable shoe EVER

    Rating

LOVE these shoes! I have a pair of Primal Run Amocs and I thought they were amazing, but these shoes are lighter, softer, and even more of a warm hug for your feet. The sole shape is magic, and after years of chronic foot pain I have been absolutely pain-free. Elves, please please consider making winter boots with this sole design? :)
  176. Affordably priced

    Rating

These affordably priced shoes are great, I weather-proofed them to handle rainy Seattle weather and they’re great! The leather is buttery soft and super comfy. I was torn between the black and navy with stars, but went with the black to be more versatile. Still eying the stars one though :) The only reason I’m not giving 5ese five stars is because the toebox seems larger than it needs to be, giving it that “clown shoe” look, and I have wide feet as it is. This is why I didn’t order the burgundy color, since I thought it looked the most “clowny”.
  177. Woman’s shoe for men

    Rating

Not the best Softstar shoe. The men’s shoe looks like a woman’s shoe. My kids asked why I was wearing my wife’s shoes. Only wear around house.
  178. Spoiled Wearing All my Other Shoes

    Rating

Only purchase these if want to feel what a true wide toebox feels like and are willing to commit! For the first time ever, all of my toes have freedoms in a shoe! After 8 years of minimalist footwear with wide toe boxes, I finally know what a shoe should actually feel like. My perpetually curved toes are straightening out after a few weeks of daily wear! These are so amazing, that my previously favorite shoes feel constrictive and I just won’t wear them. The good news is that I’m down to a single pair that I actually wear and I can start decluttering my footwear with confidence. I was worried that I would get comments at work that they look funny - none so far! I work in a business casual office.
  179. PRIMAL

    Rating

I absolutely love these shoes. I have been wearing soft star shoes for 18 years and I have watched and shared in the excitement of the progression of soft star shoes. The New Primal has comfort and style. I am very happy with this new shoe. I will definitely purchase more in various colors.
  180. Nice looking with great ground feel!

    Rating

I own two pair of Soft Star's Primal RunAmoc shoes. I really like the RunAmocs. When the Primal Sawyer was announced, I was interested because it looked like a dressier version of the Primal RunAmoc. I still think that's the case, though it is, admittedly, still a non-conventional looking shoe. I recently wore my Sawyers to a multi-day business meeting, though most of us were engineers who dress however we want. I think the fit of the Primal Sawyer might be slightly narrower than that of the Primal RunAmoc. My Primal RunAmocs have lots of extra room across my toes; it seems to me that the Primal Sawyer, while still roomy, fits somewhat better. I have a "trail" sole on my Primal RunAmocs. The soles of the Sawyer are softer, providing better ground feel than the trail sole of my RunAmocs. When I first got them, I took a longish (7 mile) walk in them. I really enjoyed feeling the various textures of the ground as I walked. However, when I returned home, I found that several small and sharp edged stones had become embedded in the soft rubber of the Sawyer's soles. I suspect, too, that the softer soles of the Sawyer will wear faster than the trail soles of the RunAmocs. It would be nice to have the option of getting a trail sole for the Sawyer. Due to their construction, with the sole of the Sawyer being sewn to the upper at the edges, these edges stick out somewhat. When I first started using them, I would occasional catch these edges on irregularities in the ground. (I came close to tripping once or twice.) These protruding edges do provide a benefit though; when stubbing a toe against a rock or other protruding ground feature, they do provide some degree of toe protection. Despite the drawbacks noted above, I'm still happy with the Primal Sawyers. I think they look nicer than the Primal RunAmocs, so I wear them in situations where I want a slightly dressier though still casual shoe.
  181. Excellent sole shape

    Rating

The sole shape is excellent, providing plenty of room for my toes to splay and feet to really move. The upper is beautiful and super soft inside and out; these feel like slippers. However, I am taking away 1 star because the sole itself is squishy and the tred is a bit slicker than I would normally be willing to pay for in a shoe that costs more than $10. This is the kind of sole materials I expect from a cheap pair of flip flops that one might buy in a pinch. This would be a 5 star shoe if there were choices for the sole materials (3mm street or 5mm trail) like many of the other shoes here. This of course might be problematic with the way the upper is attached to the sole which is nice as is. The shoe definitely gets my recommendation but with the cautionary note about the questionable sole materials.

    Fantastic shoes

    Rating

I love these shoes. I am so happy that the Elves have used the super-wide toebox on another style, and I hope it gets further extended to more styles. I would also like to see this style done in a smooth leather, so as to provide some water resistance. The leather is soft and comfortable, they lace well, and unlike the Primal Runamocs, the heel cup is high and secure. The style is simple, casual but smart enough for city wear. I ordered the regular, because I have very wide feet, and they fit perfectly. I saw a comment about “clown shoes” in another review. Well, I guess I have clown feet, because my feet are shaped exactly like these shoes. The truth is, this is the natural shape of a human foot that hasn’t been molded to the shape of tapered-toe shoes: with toes well-spaced and splayed, and widest at the ends of the toes. If shoes that are this shape look funny to you, that’s because you are used to seeing an artificial shape imposed in the name of fashion. This is the first time in my life that I have found a non-custom-made shoe that fits my feet properly. (The Primal Runamocs are pretty good, but I don’t like how they fit at the heel — too low.) Thank-you, Softstar!!
  183. Review Update - Awesome shoes!

    Rating

I took the elves’ advice and exchanged my Sawyers for the narrow size. It is much more aesthetically pleasing than the regular width and fits my foot better. In other shoes I am a women’s 11 borderline regular/wide and I got these in 10U narrow, for reference. As they were before, very comfy shoes. I’m new-ish to the zero-drop shoe world and my feet were very happy today while I went out shopping in town for a few hours in my new Sawyers.
  184. LOVE THEM!

    Rating

My feet are a women's 9 but nearly 4" wide, so it's incredibly hard to find shoes that don't hurt. Even with a lot of barefoot brands filling my closet, shoes to me are just a necessary evil/annoyance to endure at work until I can get home and actually go barefoot again. Having said how much I generally hate shoes, to say I LOVE the Sawyer is a pretty big deal! I was a little hesitant about buying these, because I have the Primal Runamocs and actually have gotten two "clown shoe" comments on them, even though the width is similar to Birkenstocks. (Maybe it was the colors?) The Runamocs only fall into the "OK" category for me, because even though they're wide enough, there's not as much vertical space in the ball-of-foot area as I'd like. The Sawyers though, are fabulous! It’s almost like wearing a sock with a thin sole. The leather is surprisingly soft and flexible, and there’s easily enough vertical space inside that you could add an insole if you need one. This is the perfect fall shoe, and it would be great to have them in a water-resistant option for winter!
  185. Lovely new shoe

    Rating

I just received my new Sawyers! I’m loving the fit, it is perfect for my feet. I measure a women’s 10 or 10.5 and C width (in between medium and wide width) but I generally wear a women’s 11. I got the 10U in regular width and the fit is spot on, a little extra room in the width and the toe is right where I like it which is usually about 2/3 of a centimeter of room up front. The only thing I’m not a huge fan of is that it looks a little “clowny”, but I’ll just have to get used to it. I love the fit and the soft, lovely leather upper, it is very forgiving. Note: See updated review on 9/16/19 after exchanged for Narrow Width

Customer Questions

No. The heels of Primal shoes are the same size and width as the standard heel of our other shoes.

Both wide and regular widths of the Primal sole keep the toe box as the widest part of the shoe. The regular width is reduced most along the toe box, slightly less at the middle/instep portion of the shoe and has no change around the heel.

When to Order Wide Width
If you normally wear wide shoes, have a large midfoot/instep or have ordered wide Softstar shoes in the past simply because you wanted more room for toes to spread, then the wide Primal width will likely work very well for you. Wide width is also recommended if your feet are widest at the toes, or if you have been wearing Correct Toes or other toe spacers to restore a natural foot shape.

When to Order Regular Width
If you have a slim midfoot/instep then you may prefer the regular width. Regular width is also recommended for people who do not need the full amount of space in the toe box. For example, if you are new to minimalist shoes and have been wearing tapered/pointy shoes most of your life then your toes likely point inward and you may find the full amount of space from the wide width to be excessive, especially at first. We find this to be the case with most of our female customers, due to the conventional tapered shape of most women's shoes.

Very likely! Our shoe designers are tinkering with new ideas for the Primal sole. At this time it is available for the following shoes:

These are listed on the Primal category page.

Sorry, but no. The leather bullhide sole must be glued to a shoe's midsole, but the Sawyer's design requires it to be sewn directly to a stitchable sole.

Sorry, but it is not possible to add the Vibram Lightning sole to the Primal Sawyer. The Primal Sawyer is designed to be stitched directly to a sole, but the rubber compound of the Lightning sole cannot be stitched and must be glued to a midsole. This requires a different shoe design.
