Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

Soling Material Comparison

RunAmoc Sole Comparison
5mm Lightning 2mm Street 6mm Megagrip Bullhide Leather
Summary 5mm Lightning Sole Multifunctional sole for a wide range of uses. 2mm Street Sole Minimal space between feet and ground. 6mm Megagrip Sole Unparalelled grip on steep, rocky and muddy trails. Bullhide Leather Sole Extremely flexible sole for most unrestricted foot movement.
Features

Ultra-flexible in all directions, plus longer durability over thinner soles. Tread pattern provides sufficient traction on most surfaces.

Our thinnest and lightest sole. Minimal space between feet and ground.

Includes deep lugs that have been tested and proven by ultrarunners for performance on difficult trails.

We add an additional 3.5mm midsole to shoes that use the Megagrip sole to provide an extra buffer from sharp rocks.

Our most flexible sole! 3–4mm thick (natural hides vary slightly). Pliable texture provides our highest level of groundfeel and most unrestricted foot movement.

All-natural leather material allows grounding conductivity.

Use

A versatile sole for most uses. Rubber compound provides natural "stickiness" on smooth surfaces while zig-zag tread helps grip onto unnatural surfaces in nature, such as gravel or rocky paths. Thin and flexible enough for optimal groundfeel, yet thick enough to keep feet protected.

Perfect for running on smooth surfaces or for trail runners who have strengthened their feet to tolerate groundfeel of rough surfaces.

Designed specifically to handle challenging terrain, Megagrip soles perform well in both wet and dry conditions and are a favorite among extreme trail runners.

Megagrip soles are heavier than our other soles due to their extra thickness and density.

A favorite for dancers and people who prefer to run or walk barefoot. Like the street sole, it is recommended to have feet strengthened for barefoot-style running before using this sole on rough or rocky terrain.

NOTE: this sole can become very slippery on smooth, wet surfaces.

Leather Material Comparison

Leather Material Comparison
  Smooth Full Grain

Includes Sublime, Aged, Shiny
and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

LITE
Summary Smooth Full Grain LeatherSmooth and semi-glossy topside (leather labeled as "shiny" is extra glossy with metallic finish). Underside is suede. LITE Perforated LeatherSmooth, thin and light. Perforated for increased breathability.
Features

Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.

NOTE: Vegetable-Tanned leather is a "naked" material and may stain easily, even with plain water or leathercare.

Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold—but still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes.

Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.

Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!

Use

Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.

While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leather care (found in our Accessories menu).

Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.

Life-changing but I have one suggestion

    Rating

Before I got these shoes, walking was absolutely torturous for me. I’ve had them for a few months now and I can engage in cardio for far longer with more intensity and, most importantly, less pain! I also enjoy the customizability of the shoes and I may have missed some option somewhere but would it be possible to change the color of the outsole? I live in a very hot area with terrible city planning so unshaded pavement gets really hot really fast. From my (very limited) understanding of physics, I think that a lighter colored outsole would help for walking on hot surfaces. Now, if I missed an option on the customizing page or there’s another shoe that offers exactly what I’m suggesting, or some other thing that prevents this from becoming a reality that I am not aware of then… my bad. Otherwise, great product; I greatly appreciate the difficult, thoughtful, and beautiful handcrafted work of the elves!
  2. Pretty epic for wide feet

    Rating

Probably the first shoes I've ever gotten (not even 3E does this) where my pinky toe actually fits within the toe box (albeit at the very edge of the rubber tip). Thank you. Impressed with the quality of the leather. Very lightweight, well insulated even on snowy ground, and tough enough to go a little off-the-path through rough grasses and brush. I prefer no sock with shoes that breath well enough and the inside materials are very comfortable and my feet don't get sweaty. I truly feel more free to move around than just about any other shoe I've ever worn and it's quite remarkable.
  3. I wanted to like these, but they just don't fit

    Rating

I'll preface this by saying that my Primal Sawyers in wide size are the best-fitting and most comfortable shoes I have ever owned, period. The size 11's are the absolute perfect size for my feet and it's as if they are the only shoes on the planet that were designed for my foot shape. With that said, I was very excited to order a customized pair of the Primal RunAmocs (also size 11, as per the size chart) for more outdoorsy activities but when they arrived I was disappointed to find that they were VERY tight and did not fit at all. My toes had no room to move and my heel was pressed very firmly into the back of the shoe and I believe the cause of this is a very short toe-box that is not tall enough to accommodate my feet. The rubber that is on the end of these shoes has a sharp downward taper that isn't present on the Sawyers and it makes the fit completely different. Sadly I had to return them even though they looked great. I was tempted to size up but I think that would have caused other fit issues so unless the design is changed I think I've got no choice but to stick with my trusty Sawyers.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you Oliver for trying the Primal RunAmocs. It definitely does sound like you need a size 12 in the PRAM and we will reach out to you as we know you would really enjoy them for outdoor activities! I
  4. New favorite shoes

    Rating

I had been loyal to Sense of Motion in Colorado for many years until they went out of business. I never thought I would find a better shoe period, let alone one made even closer to me. When I eventually found Softstar against the algorithm's will, I took a gamble on the RunAmocs. I am absolutely in love with them. The SoMs may have been zero drop, but these Softstars are next level. You can feel the texture of the ground. You can feel pebbles. You can grab onto rocks and logs with your feet. I haven't stressed them enough to truly see how fragile they are, and I am sure they are a bit more fragile than my Trailhead tanks, but this shoe fits such a niche that I absolutely do not mind replacing these every 6-12 months. I will have them in different themes. I will have them in different grips. I... I love them. I love you, Softstar.

My favourite pairs of shoes - but with caveats

    Rating

I have 2 other pairs of softstars. These are by far, the most comfy shoes I've ever worn. Love the width that comes with the primal line. I've taken them for some light scrambles around Australia and New Zealand alps. These shoes are perfect for normal, day to day walks around the park. Unfortunately, for light trails, they just don't cut it. The rubber is great and grippy at the start, but they wear out way too quickly. Furthermore, since the sole is glued (not stitched) to the leather midsole, delamination happens at the front of the shoe. This, in my opinon, is a massive fumble. You would inevitably kick rocks when walking, so not reinforcing the front contact point (at the minimum) is a design fault. It definitely needs to be blake stitched together so that people can wear it for light hiking, let alone trails.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thanks Eson for your review. We are glad they are comfy for you. We would highly recommend you consider the Megagrip sole options for trail scrambling, light or heavy use. If you are having issues with delamination of your shoes, please contact our customer service team as we gauarantee our shoes for workmanship with our happy feet gaurantee: https://www.softstarshoes.com/guarantee. The blake stitching method is a great suggestion, but requires use of pre-molded soling with stitching changels which are not made in our proprieatary wider/foot friendly shapes.
  6. Finally shoes that fit

    Rating

I've been wearing the wide primal RunAmocs for about a year now. My feet are 28cm in length but I tried sizing up to a 13U. First putting them on was a great experience as I could finally splay my toes within a shoe. Fully splayed, my pinky toes can touch the sides so I wouldn't complain if an extra-wide version was introduced but this version is still so freeing and its nice to be able to "grip" the gound while walking and wiggle the toes while sitting. Trying on some old shoes from other barefoot brands I had before can physically hurt now because of how tight they feel as my feet have widened a bit more. While the 13U is probably a bit long for me, I have had no trouble with tripping as the leather and rubber are so flexible (I have primal Sawyers in the same size but they have a bit of a problem with tripping probably due to the lip where the upper is sewn to the sole). Now testing them through all seasons in northern Canada, I can say they are usable in -20°C winter as long as you wear good socks. The leather is surprisingly good for keeping warm as long as you keep moving. The thin sole is where most of the cold will come from. However, they are not very waterproof even after applying waterproofing wax. Water does seep in through the seams near the soles. So avoid any puddles and don't allow snow to melt on them. Also not good for walking through thick snow due to the low cut and non-sealed tongue. The soles also do not have much traction on them, especially once you wear down the treads so walking on snow and especially ice can be tricky (but they do perform much better than the Sawyers which have almost zero traction on snow). In summer they perform great on pavement and trails except for when there is heavy rain or wet trails. I have ordered another pair with megagrip soles which I am excited to test out for both traction and thermal insulation. Overall, they are my favourite and most comfortable pair of shoes.
  7. One Caveat

    Rating

Let me start off by saying: I own 2 pairs of Softstar Shoes, and I have my 3rd set on the way. I love Softstar and believe they are a great company with quality shoes. My RunAmocs were my first pair of shoes from Softstar and I enjoyed them enough that I went ahead and bought a pair of Sawyers, soon to be followed up by the new Chelsea boot. The one major problem with the RunAmoc is that they do not have the upper sewn in to the sole, like the Sawyer. Where these are trail running shoes, and I have used them as such, the soles have begun to separate off the bottom of the shoe, which started around 3 months in of owning the shoes. I have had the Sawyers almost as long, worn them more, and have not had the same problem, most likely because the way they are sewn together. If Softstar is able to fix this design issue, I will buy these for life as my athletic shoe! These are WONDERFUL shoes, but they do have this one pretty big design flaw, in my opinion.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hi Cam - Can you please reach out to us about your Primal Runamoc sole separation? Bonded soles are our most durable soling - and depending on the age and use of your shoes may be under warranty. Sole separation can happen in shoes that are worn hard over time, but if happening with regular wear and early on - that is something we will definitely make right for you. Also sometimes the sole will begin to show a little gap of separation just on the outer edge which is cosmetic but has no functional impact on durability - so if you can include a photo that would be much appreciated.

    Such excellent shoes

I got these for my husband and he loves them! They’re the only shoes that fit his feet and actually last. My daughter’s feet are the same shape so we get all her shoes from here too. I highly recommend all their products I’ve tried, for fit, quality and appearance.

    Rating

These are do-anything, actually barefoot/minimal shoes. I've had a pair with of the newer version with the updated fit for about a year now and they continue to be favorites for walking, hiking, light scrambling, running, errands, travel and biking when it isn't absolutely pouring out (they handle light rain/snow fine.) To me, they aren't formal enough for most office work occasions but I've been known to wear them when I don't have meetings and they are probably fine for business casual or casual environments. Toe box: I have "high volume" toes and flat arches. For sure, when these first arrive, anyone with similar feet is going to feel like the toe box is too flat and tight. This is actually a key part of the design. They will stretch out and mold to your personal feet! That's what will make them a favorite shoe. You can hasten the process by stuffing them with a cloth or extra socks when you're not wearing them. I do find that I need to size up by one for these compared to the Sawyers or other shoes for needed length. Updated fit: Our family had a couple of pairs of these when Softstar first released them in a primal version a few years ago. And I have to say, we didn't love them then, the heel didn't lock down well so everyone was walking out of the back of them, the cut seemed a bit off somehow, lacing system not quite right, etc. They *have* lasted forever so I keep wearing mine anyway for gardening and other muddy activities (kiddo outgrew his already). But I didn't love them and left a kind of tepid review about it. This newer version though? Awesome! Just get them in the right size--not so big that they are sloppy, but not too short either. Then give some time for them to stretch to your particular foot shape. Take care getting in and out of them--I unlace mine quite a bit so I can avoid stretching out the heel. The all-black ones will get quite toasty in summer, so I'm looking to get a lighter color next!
  10. Lifesaver Shoes!!!

    Rating

Literally the only shoes that are comfortable for my very wide short feet. I have an old back injury and very sensitive legs. I work hours on concrete with these and have never felt better!! I’m currently wearing them everywhere on our dairy farm. Milking cows , feeding calves. In rainy cold weather I slip a pair of tingley boots over them. Don’t know where I’d be without them. Gonna be getting a few more pairs : ) Tried other shoes with thicker soles but nothing was comfortable.
  11. Wide comfortable but not durable

    Rating

So far Soft star is the only brand that I've found that fits my wide feet. On the RunAmocs the end of the toe box is tapered. Initially too snug on top of toes, but it stretched enough to fit. I'm size 10.5 and ordered 11. Primal and wide fits my foot size comfortably. Initially the thin sole was hard on my feet especially when on concrete. The upper separated from the sole at the stitching (at the heels and big toe)after about 6 months. That was disappointing after how much I paid. I'm been looking for a cobbler to sew them back up.

    What Happened to the Sizing?

    Rating

I ordered a Primal 12 Wide almost exactly two years ago. They fit perfect and finally fell to pieces. I ordered the exact same thing and with the new pair my toes are crunched. I compared the new sole to my previous pair and the new sole easily fits inside the old sole. The old sole toe box is humorously larger. Annoyed by this inconsistency.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hi Anthony -

Thank you for taking time to share your experiences. I see from your order history that you exchanged for a 13 Wide and I hope that they will work as well and faithfully for you as the first pair. I totally understand your frustration about sizing and wanted to share a few things about why sometimes new pairs may feel drastically different than our beloved original pairs:

At Softstar we make consistency a top priority. We invest a lot in training and equipment to minimize differences from shoe to shoe. Most of our patterns are die cut (stamped out from metal cookie-cutter-like patterns) to ensure uniformity. However, the handcrafted construction of soft leather that we use can sometimes lead to small variations that your sensitive foot may notice as a big change.

There are a few key reasons that a new pair of our shoes may differ in feel from your old pair:

    1. New Shoes vs. Worn Shoes: our natural leather will stretch and form to your feet over time. Typically, new shoes feel tighter than the ones you have broken in over several weeks, months or years. The older the shoe/wear, the bigger the difference!

    2. Leather: softness, thickness and texture of natural leather will vary slightly from hide to hide... no two cows are exactly the same! Perforated leather also feels and sews differently from smooth or shiny or suede leather. As it breaks in, all of our different types of leather will start to fit similarly after they break-in and form to your foot.

    3. The Primal RunAmoc sole involves hand trimming the final product, so the shape of the outer sole can have variation from shoe to shoe. However, the innersole and interior shape and volume of the shoe will be the same since they are die cut to consistent patterns. This means that if you hold up two different pairs of RunAmocs in the same size sole-to-sole then you might see that the outer soles do not match up perfectly, but the uppers, inside volume and interior length are all cut identically.

    4. Upgraded Designs: Over time, we may make changes to improve the design of a shoe. For the Primal RunAmoc, we made a pattern change a few years back to make the ankles more fitted, which could have subtle impacts on how the shoe feels. We also anticpate some minor tweaks next year to improve consistency of toe box heights.

    5. Changing Feet: Keep in mind that if you are in the process of switching from more traditional cushioned shoes to minimal shoes then you may find that over time your feet are spreading out more and getting wider and longer as they get healthier and stronger.

  13. So close, but not there yet...

    Rating

I almost loved wearing these shoes! Widest toe box on the market. However, the sole of the shoe is terrible. They lasted me maybe 4 months. The sole has a lip that goes all the way around the perimeter of the shoe that constantly gets caught. This led to the sole separating from the shoe. tread was bald by the end of those 4 months. In the end I had to stop wearing them because a hole straight through to my sock formed because of the poor stitching between leather and sole on the heel. Great concept, but the price is too high.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you Wyatt for your review. There definitely is some durability tradeoff when designing glove-like soft shoes, and we were sad to hear you only got four months out of your shoes. Most customers get between 1-3 years of daily abuse our of our footwear. With your tread gone in 4 months you may have more excessive wear than average, where a more traditional rubber sole might be warranted. Please reach out to our customer service team as we would love to find you styles which may work better for you.

Favorite Barefoot Shoes, Incredibly Comfortable, Somewhat Tough to Size

    Rating

These are my favorite barefoot running shoes from all of the brands I've tried (not extensive, but Xero and Vivobarefoot). They are super light weight and the leather is extremely comfortable for my feet, it feels like I have almost nothing on walking around. The first week I had them, I thought I'd ordered either a size too small or too narrow, but they've broken in nicely. Still a bit on the tight side, but I'd consider this more of a glove like fit than being too small.

Make sure to order a size up

    Rating

I measured by feet following the softstar guidelines with a book and wall and tape measure. However as the product page says the Runamoc Shoe Runs small. I ordered size 11 because my foot fell within that size range. However when I got the shoes and tried them on although they fit width wise, because I ordered them to be wide, they did not comfortably fit length wise. I took them on a run anyway hoping they would stretch and haven't used the shoes since. If you do decide to buy these shoes, which are quite expensive, then be sure to order the right size or return them if they are too small so you don't end up like me with a pair of shoes you cannot use.
  16. Great quality, tricky sizing

    Rating

First of all, these are THE best-fitting shoes my very wide feet have ever had (aside from Vibram 5 Fingers, which barely count as shoes).  The only reason they get 4 stars is because the sizing is tricky: my feet measure just at a 7UW in length (which works in the primal Mary Janes), but the rubber toe-caps on the 7UW RunAmocs I originally bought were painfully tight over my big-toenails (which angle up a little bit).  The elves suggested going up to 8UW, which works okay (I'm used to having to size up on all my footwear).  For lacing, I use Locklaces in a combination of heel-locking & straight bars (onto which I threaded beads), which gives my forefoot space to spread, but keeps my foot from sliding forward. As far as quality & durability goes, I've worn these shoes 6-10 hr/day almost every non-rainy day for the past 2 years (I wear Megagrips on wet days) & they're still in surprisingly good shape, other than the Omniflex (now Lightning) tread wearing down!  I did buy a 2nd pair earlier this year, but still haven't had to retire the 1st.
  17. Terrible

    Rating

TERRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE from the gross rubber toe guard (the company lies when it says the leather in the toebox will stretch -- nope; it cannot because the leather is tamped down by rubber!) to the poor manufacturing which makes the length slightly longer in one shoe than the other (causing tripping), yet the company gaslights, again, saying that is within their margin of error so 'tough luck'/no returns. Done with SSS. (5 star review is because the company has manipulated this review section so that to see the low reviews, one has to search towards the end of all the review pages...but other, detailed reviews concur with mine -- bad company/product).

    Response from store

Note from Elf Trish - Cal we are sad to disappoint you. I do personally publish every review and do not manipulate reviews to have them go in any sort order.

I purchased a pair of Primal RunAmoc shoes and could not be happier with them. I have used the daily for normal wear and the occasional hike for over 6 months. The leather is still in great condition even though the mileage is high enough to start showing signs of wear on the Vibram soles. I highly recommend this shoe for anyone wanting minimalist shoes.

I really like these shoes! Very flexible, soft, allow natural movement. Since it's my first barefoot shoes I feel the changes being made in feet, legs , back...all good things. The only challenge is they get hot on hot surfaces, like cement and asphalt. But on natural surfaces and where I live at high altitude they are great! Thank you for the effort you put into creating good products!
  20. tight in the toe area and inconfortable

    Rating

I want to love them, they look great and good quality. But I never wear them because they are so unconfortable and tight, I feel like it cuts my feet's circulation. I am disapointed, I can't return them because it was a final sell,

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Dear Amira - Please contact our customer service team for advice on sizing and stretching. The shoes may be a bit too short in length, or (hopefully) they are a good length and the toe room can be addressed by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag overnight. The leather will stretch and conform to your feet faster with moisture.

    Rating

I also have Rogues, Switchbacks and Dash. To me Primal Runamocs are the ones. My feet can fully spread out, usable with Correct Toes, extra later of rubber on the toes is great for durability and gives a sturdy feel to the shoe. Rogues are better as a casual slip on, Switchbacks are better on chunky trail, and Dash are stylish and feather light. But Primal Runamocs are to me the best all around pair of Softstars

Second Pair after the first lasted 5 years! Still Love them!

    Rating

After wearing my first pair of Primal RunAMoc for 5 years almost daily I have finally worn through the leather on the side. These are the only shoes that are wide enough while being soft and well made. I love them and recently ordered a new pair. They no longer offer it with the thin 2mm vibram sole but the 5mm vibram sole is just as comfortable. I upsized by one size because of the thicker sole and it has worked great.
  24. Best All-Around Athletic Shoes!

    Rating

I purchased a pair of 1st quality Primal RunAmocs from the latest Clearance Sale in Oxblood Red with Sublime Black. They look and feel amazing! I love the soft leather, the suede footbed, and the heel pad. Everything feels good against bare skin and I don't have any slipping, rubbing, or hot spots. These shoes are completely flexible in all directions for natural movement. The Vibram outsole has plenty of grip. The recycled bike inner tube toe cap seems like it'll do a great job of preventing scuffs while being an innovative way to reuse something instead of it being tossed in a landfill or the ocean. I hiked about 4 miles in them this morning on a combination of dirt, grass, crushed rock, and boardwalk. There is a great blend of ground feel and all the protection you'd ever need. For those concerned about the toe box, I found that it's plenty wide and the height issue from so many reviews can easily be resolved by packing a dry cloth or a clean pair of balled-up socks in the toe of the shoes. I had a rainy day when I did mine and I ended up leaving them packed for 2 days. You probably can get away with overnight, but mine were fine after that.

    But for the toe volume...

    Rating

Pros: Great construction. Durable materials. I love the quirky design. It's a good conversation starter. Great sole width and flexibility. They feel like I'm wearing a pair protective of socks which is great for a large variety of movements. Cons: No ventilation. My feet get hot in them, so I'm reserving them for winter use only. I recommend incorporating a breathable material or a clever ventilation system of some sort. I wish the lacing went one or two more holes further down toward the toe area of the shoes, and that the front of the shoes had a raised structure as they do at the heel. This would eliminate the need to focus on anchoring the shoes to the wearer’s feet at the heels and ankles and incorporate more midfoot in anchoring the shoes. It would also provide more volume for the wearer’s toes, allow more freedom to articulate them up and down without the downward pressure on the toes. I don't think I'll ever get used to feeling that downward pull on my toes which is a shame because these shoes are a great concept, but I can only tolerate wearing them for a short periods.
  26. TOO FLAT AND SMALL SPACE FOR THE TOES

    Rating

I like the shoes, and they have enough space for the barefoot experience, and I have no doubt about the high quality of the shoes. I also like that they are light. But the toes feel like they are squished and have no space up high, and it's really inconfortable. They could've been perfect, but this is the only issue that prevents me from wearing them. I hope they change the design, because there is no need for them to be that flat and tight in the toe area since we can snug in the shoes with the laces and the toes and have more space to be comfortable while running and playing sports.

    Very small toe volume

    Rating

The shoe is advertised to have a large toe box. While this is true, laterally, the height in the toe is very minimal. I put them in and it felt like my toes were being crushed the entire time, I thought they would stretch (as the description says they should) but they didn't. They became unbearable, so I tried to return them. However, softstar would not take them back because I had worn them. Beware if you don't have incredibly flat toes.

    Rating

I wasn't sure I needed the extra wide toe box, but boy was I wrong! I'm very glad I got these. These do run small because of the way the toe is designed, so DO buy a size up. Also, the shoe laces provided weren't long enough, so I wouldn't suggest bothering to get custom colored laces.

I love how comfortable they are, my feet are wide and other brands have "wide" versions that aren't wide enough for my toes. I am hoping my callouses fall off and that my bunions slowly heal or at least improve. My only wish is that these were more breathable but as long as I'm somewhere I can take my shoes off, I'm okay (my feet can run sweaty). I love the sole: strong yet thin. My first day in them I accidentally stepped on broken glass on the sidewalk. These shoes withstood it!

This is my second pair of Primal RunAmoc's & maaan are they comfortable. On my last pair I went with the extra chunky soles (Megagrip soles) & loved 'em for hiking more rugged terrain. Over time though I've grown to love the regular slim Vibram sole a bit more though. These are my everyday shoes now whether I'm going to work, school, the woods, or out to hang with the homies. Fantastic made-in-America product!

I don't understand the decision making behind toebox. Rubber puts pressure on top of nails because it's so flat. Feet aren't 2D... Had to stretch it a bit with heat gun. Materials are top quality and the shoes are warm. If the durability checks out I will be ordering winter boots in the future.

These shoes are awesome. I have very wide feet size 10.5 so I ordered a size 11 wide. Also these shoes shipped very fast.
  38. Good to rehabilitate your foot

    Rating

I have purchased both the regular and wide width Primal RunAmoc in size 11. My foot is around 27 cm and gets wider and wider everyday. The shoes are perfect when it comes to space for my big toe, but I find the space for my other toes to be too much in the front. To fix that, I purchased metatarsal pads which have taken up some of that space. That is my only complaint with these shoes. Overall the build quality is great and Softstar has a very generous return policy as well.

  43. Best wide shoes on the market

    Rating

I love these shoes. They are absolutely the best non-bespoke wide shoes you can buy on the market. I bought mine in 2018 and wanted to finally review them here to say they are holding up beautifully five years later, and though I am not an avid runner, I do use them frequently for long hikes, gym, dancing, and lots of other activities. To those commenting negatively on the aesthetics of the width of these shoes: If you don't like the look of these, you can buy literally ANY other shoes on the market, even any Softstar models other than the primal line. Some of us absolutely need this wide width and there are no other non-bespoke shoes like this out there. And for what it's worth, I and many others love the look of them. (I get compliments and questions about them from both men and other women asking where they can buy them). My feet are 11.5cm wide and the Primal Runamocs are one of the main reasons I was able to avoid bunion surgery and heal my feet. Yes, they are different-looking. But I believe this look will catch on when people start to realize that their restrictive "normal" shoes are the primary cause of their foot pain and other foot health issues. For now, you have to care less about what other people think, think of your long-term health, and learn to love the beautiful, natural shape and design of these. Please stop commenting negatively on aesthetics and work on expanding your imagination about what body-respecting fashion can look like.
  44. Only lasted 14 months

    Rating

I'm a runner. I run in the hills about 12 miles a week. I was very sad last week to have the upper come unglued from the lower over most of one side of one shoe after just 14 months. I had to throw the shoes away as a result. My previous pairs lasted 3 years or more. Bummer.
  45. Coming apart badly with life still in the sole

    Rating

Unfortunately I have to agree with another reviewer who described poor strength between the upper and lower, with full confirmation of this problem. I wore these shoes for running for about a year and there is still plenty of life left in the rubber sole. Only the outer tread has worn off in some places but the thickness of the rubber sole is still there. However, the stitching broke on the outside of both shoes and there is now a full 2 inch gap on one shoe and a four inch gap on the other where the upper is fully disarticulated from the lower and my foot is totally exposed! I contacted the company only to be told that this could not be repaired by them, although a cobbler may be able to fix the shoes. Instead, I will be buying different shoes and not recommending these to other runners. This is unfortunate because I otherwise like Softstar. I am enjoying the hiking boots and the Sawyers are a favorite of mine.

Poor durability between upper and lower

    Rating

I like the general concept of the shoe. They succeed at providing toe space that is missing in almost all other options. The upper and lower, however, are connected in a very exposed manner. The rubber sole is just sort of affixed to the upper and thats it. Nothing is protecting that margin. Further, the lower has very angular edges and isnt rounded off at all. It is very prone to snagging on things and getting tugged on. After about 2 months of casual wearing and twice a week running, my upper and lower are starting to come apart. Also, alot of the stitching is starting to fray and jut out from the upper. I have to be exceedingly careful when taking the shoes off or else it feels like I am aggravating the upper/lower separation issue. If you look at other minimal footwear options, you see a much more integrated upper and lower that isnt going to provide a niche for getting caught on and pulled by. For now, I will be dousing my pair with shoe glue to try and squeeze some lifespan out of them.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thanks Sam for your feedback! Yes, our shoes are not made with a molded sidewall sole - but rather a traditional moccasin style which is what gives Softstars their unique glove fit. Durability of this style is excellent - lasting most of our customers many seasons of wear. Sometimes we hear about concerns that it might separate - but the shoes are fine. That being said, we do make errors from time to time, so please contact us with photos so we can connect. Your shoes are covered under our Happy Foot Guarantee for all workmanship for the first 3 months of wear. Thank you!

I bought a pair during the last sale. A really big fan of Wildling shoes and thought nothing could ever be better…. And then these bad boys arrived. With the 2nm Vibram street sole, it’s literally the closest thing you’re ever going to get to being “barefoot” in a shoe. Thanks to the really wide toe box, There’s nothing about this shoe that impedes the foot. The leather and craftsmanship oozes quality. To boot, I wear no socks with these and somehow the shoes don’t stink. Confession…. I have sweaty, smelly feet and although my feet sweat a little in these, there’s zero stench. Just the smell of good leather. Magic. Going to grab a pair of Dash’s at the next sale.

Best shoes on the market, great toe box, made in USA

    Rating

These and the Primal Sawyers with wide width selected are the best barefoot shoes on the market, and since barefoot/minimalist style shoes are the only shoes you should be willing to wear that makes them the best shoe on the market period and they are even made in the USA, no need to send money to China and help fund their military and government if you want to buy the best pair of shoes! While they are snug at first, they are able to stretch out significantly. I can comfortably wear my Correct Toes in these and spread my toes as wide as I can without any problems after they stretch out. The widest part of my feet, the upper portion of my pinky and big toes (as it should be), measures about 13 centimeters with toes splayed and size 10U Wide fits great, not tight at all AFTER being stretched out. One issue that should be noted is size inconsistencies with same size and width shoes I've ordered over the last few years. My first pair, a 10U Wide ordered in November 2020 feels a bit wider and is about 2 cm longer than the 10U wides I ordered in Jan 2022 and November 2022. Both pairs are closer in length to a pair of 9U wides that I ordered during a clearance sale than my original 10U wide, though they're width is closer to the original. My pair from Nov 2022 are taking a lot longer to stretch out than the first two. While this hasn't been a problem for me since all three pairs still fit great and allow my toes to splay, this may be a problem for others where the potential difference in size would be enough to be a deal breaker. A pair of Megagrip Primal RunAmocs ordered June 2022 are just as wide and long as my original pair and stretched out fine, though the usable part of the length is slightly smaller due to the megagrip soles. All of Softstar's other models need to be shaped like this and I'd like them to make a safety toe barefoot shoe or boot for those of us that are supposed to wear them for work. I've tried the chukkas and rogues but their toe box is way too narrow to be considered barefoot/minimalist...my old shoes I used to wear before wearing exclusively barefoot style shoes have wider toe boxes. I would like to buy Dash RunAmocs and Moc3 but they look like they have narrow toe boxes too so I'm not even going to bother until they offer Primal width in those too. Softstar obviously knows how to make a proper toe box so I don't know why they only offer horrible, narrow, foot deforming toe boxes on other models, especially when having a proper toe box is the most important quality in a barefoot shoe.
  49. Still trying to love them

    Rating

I live in my Sawyers. I'm running a bit, and wanted minimalist there too. 10U was too long, so I ordered my usual 9U. I have a very high instep, and the RunAmoc is a bal. Those two facts are not usually compatible. I'm STUFFING the toes to try to get a bit more headroom, and have ordered some 3rd party 54" laces, because I need to loosen the laces so much just to get my foot into them. Once on, they are like very tight socks, but more or less comfortable with a very thin sock. I like them, but I'm hoping to get them "tuned" so that I can love them. If Softstars comes out with a derby running shoe (think Converse all stars) or half sizes in the RunAmoc, I will be all over them. If you have what is now called a "high volume foot" the RunAmocs simply don't have as much height or adjustability as a derby like the Sawyers.

Trying these in my NY apartment left me skeptical, but one walk in the park and we fell in love. My Runamocs loosened up and felt amazing on the first day out, and left me breathless from the total toe box freedom, even while wearing correct toes spacers. Nothing compares for everyday street walking in the city with my 2mm soles. No slipping issues, and the ultra ground feel is so much healthier for my gait.

just wanted to share my experience with the new sizing bought in DEC 2022 according to the size chart im at the upper limits of a 8u (most of my shoes are size 9 in other brands) i ended up purchasing the primals in both 8u & 9u (wide versions) . out the box the 8u's were on the tighter side i can see the indentation of my big toe on the rubber but after wearing them a couple times they feel perfect without any blisters or hot spots btw i got the super thin street sole with these which i highly recommend for that (one with the ground feel). out the box the 9u's fit good no toe indentation on the rubber i got the regular sole with these ones i think i like the street sole more but only time will tell. also i bought primals a year ago in the size 8u regular which in my opinion feel more like the 9u's today with new sizing. i got very wide feet and i could still pull them off in the regular widths just food for thought especially if you don't like the clown shoe look. even though they might look goofy to some i prefer the extra width on the wide. i also bought a pair of moc3 in 9u they are a lot more narrow in relation to the primals and as far as sizing goes i think these are true to the older sizing which ran bigger . i think i could have pulled these off in an 8u either way my toes don't get to spread out on the moc3 as they do in the primals still a fun shoe to wear im happy to say that they growing on me the more i wear them. soft star recommends for the primals to go with the larger size if ur between sizes. if i were to buy the primals again i personally would bite the bullet and go with the smaller size for that more conforming feel but i think you will still have a good experience eitherway. hope this helps

Like others have said, half sizes would be great. I had to return the 10 and get the 11 and it’s a little too long, while at the same time the leather is really flat on the toes. I’ll try stuffing it with a cloth overnight to see if that helps, but it’s been a week already and still kind of uncomfortable. Also, the stitching on the “V” on one of my shoes is messed up, and so there’s a finger sized gap where I can put my finger between the main leather and the “V” on the side. Not a big deal because my foot is still covered, but kind of a let down for such an expensive purchase. I already waited so long to get my size exchange so I’m just going to put up with it

Note from the Elves - Hello Kyrillos - Thanks for reaching out. There definitely should NOT be a gap in your stitching, that is not to be expected with our shoes! We will be reaching out with you directly. Best, Elf T.
  56. Break-in period required

    Rating

I waited until I felt comfortable in these shoes to write this review. I have been using them everyday for the past 2.5 months and I think the break-in period just ended . Be warned: if you are in between 2 sizes, you are in for 2 months of discomfort. I used their sizing sheet and my feet almost reached the line between 8U and 9U. The Elves told me to take the 9U. The problem is that these shoes are flat at the toes. No kidding, just flat. So even though the width at the toes seems delicious, the flatness kills it all. My toes were really in pain for 2 weeks, before the leather started expanding. I bought them before a 3-week business trip and I only travelled with these. That was a big mistake, I really felt that my nails were about to come off the first week. As other users, I think that half sizes are needed for this model: 10U would have been too much but 9.5U would have been perfect. This required break-in period is the reason I gave these shoes 4 stars, because otherwise, they have become my favorite pair of shoes. I bought them in the Chocolate/Forest color which was still a default color some weeks ago. Too bad that color is not available as default anymore, because it goes well with anything. I even wore them formally with a gray suit at work for an important meeting and no one was shocked. You can run and exercise in these, you can hike in them, you can wear them as everyday shoes and even formally if you wear a style that matches the shoes. In summary, I am glad that the break-in period ended but I still think that a half-size up would have been better.

It has been an absolute NIGHTMARE trying to find minimalist shoes with a veey wide toe box. Truly frustrating to no end, so many pairs of shoes bought and returned from most barefoot companies. And then I found these in 2020. My prayers were answered. The search was finally over, and I could wear comfortable shoes that wouldnt cause a myriad of health problems. And then, they redesigned the heel. I bought a new pair after my old ones wore out, and they don't fit at all. So much so, that the redesigned heel was so tight on my foot, the sole tore off from removing the shoe after a month of use. I was assured the shoe was stretch out, and to keep wearing it in. It never felt right. My toes were cramped. I bought a pair of clearance shoes that had the old heel, and they fit like a dream, immediately. Obviously the new design is a problem for my foot type. Thing is, the clearance shoes I got are megagrip and just are not ideal for what I need them for. A bit stiff, but they are okay. So yeah. You guys ruined this shoe for me and probably a few others. Just thought you should know. I'll try sizing up but I'm not happy with it. The size 9s I wore were perfect. I don't want my shoes to be even wider. Meh.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hello Matt - thank you for sharing with us your experience / frustration in the pattern change to the heel. We certainly did not want to disappoint and we have heard your frustration from other long time customers who preferred it the old way. Overall, the balance of customers who needed the redesigned heel has greatly outnumbered those who preferred it looser. I do hope the leather in the heel has stretched over time to fit you better and appreciate you reaching out to us.

Finally shoes with a wide enough toe box that my pinkies don't rub. I don't even have duck feet, but my toes crave wiggle room. This shoe gives it. If you're used to wearing traditional shoes, these will look comically wide. I don't care. I think they're cute and comfortable AF. I customized the colors and I'm obsessed with how they came out. I'm used to spending money for good shoes, and the quality exceeds what I've paid for more expensive shoes. I can finally donate my old shoes because I'm wearing these babies everywhere! I'm going to replace all my shoes with Softstar.

I have a very wide toe box & can’t wear most shoes without pain just to preface this review I’ve tried every barefoot shoe company you can think of & gone back to back with their support teams about my unique metrics trying to find a closed toe shoe that’s fits me. No success. Until I recently came across the primal lineup & wow was I intrigued. Have to say it is a euphoric feeling knowing I can run freely now and not have to worry about impinging my toe joints. Something that even my five fingers couldn’t accomplish because of the lack of material flex. If you’re looking for a closed toe shoe it doesn’t get any better, this is the truth everything else you’ve been told was a lie. I’m going to make it a personal goal of mine to get these on more feet ????

So I've lamented the bunionectomy I had to do when I was younger as now I realize it wouldn't have been necessary if I had shoes like this. One friend said they were the unsexiest shoes ever; well, I think they're uber cute and it didn't stop someone from flirting with me and asking for a date, so there you crazy fashionistas willing to sacrifice your mature health longevity. We need our healthy feet to keep healthy bodies and with the correct toes, whoa, I'm noticing my toes starting to lengthen out! I got the Wide in a lengthier pair, but I think they'll be perfect for colder weather when I put on thicker socks. So, I just ordered a pair of Mary Janes as I can wear the Primals with my jeans and slacks, but dresses need another comfy style. Great job you awesome elves! Thank you!! =D

MY MEASUREMENTS: Food Width: 12 cm ( 4 11/16 inches ) Foot Length: 30.5 cm ( 12 inches ) SHOE PURCHASED: Adult Primal Run Amoc Length: 12 U Width: Wide Sole Thickness: 3mm How long did I wear these before reviewing? Daily for 2 months. Activities During Wear: Mostly hiking (30+ miles), and Mountain & Road Biking (120 miles). Plus about a week's worth of all-day wear (at home, at work, playing with kids, grocery shopping, etc). Additional Relevant Info: I've been wearing Correct Toes, every time I wear these shoes, to begin correcting the splay of my toes from being squished in too-narrow shoes for my whole life. IMPORTANT LESSONS LEARNED: SOLES THICKNESS & ACTIVITY TYPE: The 3mm sole is not intended for the type of outdoor uses & terrains I cover. I have since ordered a pair of custom 5mm soles to use for my athletic needs (eagerly awaiting their arrival). With the way I've been using them, the upper started peeling up, and away from the soles a little bit. This is the only reason I gave 4 stars, and not 5. For the moment, they're still working well enough, but I have concerns. Thus the order for the pair with 5mm soles. CARING FOR LEATHER UPPERS: I'm just now learning proper care and treatment for the leather to ensure a longer shoe-life. If you're ordering your first pair, I recommend learning how to properly care for leather uppers. DETAILED REVIEW: At age 41, this is the first shoe I've ever found that has truly fit my feet, while wearing my ACTUAL shoe size! I LOVE these shoes. They fit my feet perfectly! I've always had to order 1 to 3 sizes too long to accommodate the width of my feet from the arch to my toes, and the thickness (height) of the shape of my foot and toes. But with the PRIMAL Run Amocs + WIDE 3mm sole, I was able to order my true shoe size! I've been watching the minimalist, zero drop shoe space for years, hoping someone would create a more affordable zero-drop foot for my super-wide feet. In June 2022, I finally decided to spring the extra $$ for these (partially for foot & leg-related medical reasons). It has been worth it! My wife even encouraged me to spring for a separate pair of PRIMAL Run Amocs (with WIDE 5mm sole) and Switchback Boots for my athletic activities. After those arrive, I'll be reserving my first black pair for casual wear.

"Feet Down": The Best Minimalist Shoe Producers

    Rating

Whilst this review is on the RunAmocs that I recently purchased, Softstar has me impressed with a couple of their offerings already. I have tried Vivobarefoot, Freet, Xero Shoes, Vibrams, and even Whitin; none come close for the comfort alone. Yes, all of these producers offer pretty wide toe boxes and are still much more freeing to wear than a pair of Nike, Converse, or Adidas, but the Softstar sets itself apart in that respect for me. As far as the RunAmoc themselves, I love that you have the option to customize the leathers and colors used; it is great to be able to personalize your shoes that you wear day in and out. The design is quite "fresh" and sporty looking, but all of it is functional as well, with the added flair of a truly rubberized toe cap for protection of the toes on the front. As I touched on before and will reiterate the best part for me, and I think it is/will be for others, is just how wide these shoes can be. They achieve all of this space, yet they will still fit securely on your foot with little extra movement. The space is just there for when the action really heats up and you get to running; your toes have somewhere to "splay" into when your toes actually have to work! In comparison to the aforementioned producers, only Vivobarefoot comes close, but there is still an unmatched suppleness to the leathers and construction style used by the Elves at Softstar. I honestly barely feel like I have a shoe on, and the only thing that really reminds me is the rubber toe cap that is still being broken in a little bit (they are stiff at first, but get better with time). Yes, a Xero Prio has a wide toe box, but my toes will still slam into the materials being used for the construction of the outers. Even if my toes do that within these RunAmocs, they are only running into the softest feeling leather that just forms to the foot, and even flexes if necessary. Divine! Another thing to note is that the sole is still quite flexible, if not moreso than other producers, and I have yet to really have any painful encounters while using the Vibram 5mm sole. There is a good amount of "ground-feel", but you still feel that your foot is protected. I only have one personal gripe, and that is perhaps ignorance on my part: the outsole rubber near the heel protrudes away from the "structure" of the shoe a bit. 95% of the time I do not notice it, but when wearing these shoes while driving, that part of the heel constantly catches on my floormats when letting out on a pedal. Slight nuisance I can deal with, as long as it does not separate the outsole from the midsole! One final thing to note is that Softstar has some absolutely fantastic customer service for this day and age; it is very refreshing and I thank y'all! They really do stand behind their products and craftsmanship, and helped me ultimately find the correct sizes and products. Top notch! Overall, I do not think I will be trying many other minimalist shoes in the near future, as Softstar will be very hard to compete with. These RunAmocs are fantastic for almost any activity or event, customizable, comfortable, very spacious, and backing them up with some of the best customer service to "boot"! Having found the closest thing to perfection for now, I shall be selling all those constricting Nikes!

  69. There should be a feature to take off the frontal rubber band

    Rating

The frontal rubber band makes the toe end tighter, especially if you are on the upper end of a size. It is unfortunate because the sawyer fits perfectly while the runamoc is tight. Although is mentioned in the description note, an effort should be made to reach size consistency, and in the meantime, provide better solutions for customers. Going into the next size is just uncomfortable for me, shoe becomes too loose for my feet.

    Sizing update

    Rating

Bought my first pair early 2021; size 11 regular (which is now wide) and they were slightly long for my feet which was fine. Size 10 might have fit better. Bought my second pair 2022 with the new design, same size 11 and they were too short. I had to go with a size 12 wide, which now fits well. This is just a heads up for others. They redesigned the heel to prevent slippage (which does hold the heel down better than the old design) but it essentially makes the shoe a bit shorter, so you might need to size up one. Still the best barefoot shoes on the market, the only ones with a wide enough toe box and a true flat sole (unlike the curved soles on Lems, NB minimalist and some others).
  71. Disappointing

    Rating

I was originally amped about the fit and feel of the shoes but after just 3 months of use, walking around the garden and through our pasture has pulled open the toes on both shoes. The stitching just seems super weak to have the front of the sole exposed for catching on things the way it is. I don't really consider walking through tall grass to be extremely hard use of a shoe either, and I was just disappointed when they both failed within a week or two of each other, just barely outside of the 3 month repair window.

  72. Super comfy but some big flaws!

    Rating

I have been wearing my Primal RunAmocs for about a month. Here are my impressions so far: PRO: - Super comfortable straight out of the box - Mega grip sole has good traction - Grips my narrow heel CONS: - Moisture/water seeps in through the seam between the upper and the sole - moisture will come in though the seam with even a few steps through a slightly damp muddy path or walking though wet grass - Ridiculously wide toe box - a lot of unnecessary width on the outside the big toe - gives them a unique but slightly crazy look. Not something you would want to wear popping into town CONCLUSION: - Seriously overpriced due to their lack of water-resistance and limited functionality.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thanks Tootsie for reviewing the Primals and glad they are comfortable for you! To waterproof your leather footwear, you can consider a breathable waterproofing product. Definitely there are tradeoffs between breathability and natural materials vs. a closed system, synthetics' and/or water repellant finishes.

    Great walking shoes

    Rating

I love these shoes because they are like shoe versions of socks. They give my toes freedom to stretch and interact with the ground more precisely. I don’t love them for running though. My original reason for buying these shoes is because I found out I was having footwear contact dermatitis issues and was scared it was my running shoes. I got these a lot for the reason that this site was the first good source of information on that condition (and I’ve been intrigued by minimalist shoes for years and just haven’t gone for it yet). I decided to try them. It turns out my issue is with my socks (or shoes I wear barefoot) and as long as I wear the right socks my old running shoes are fine. I still like the shoes, but I think more for casual/walking wear. Maybe I’ll get brave one day and try again to train with them, but the last time, even with easing into it, I felt like I was causing myself injury.

    Rating

These Primal Runamocs are a reliable and sturdy investment that have alleviated the pain and soreness of regular shoes and structured barefoot shoes. In fact, wearing these shoes regularly have helped my toes to return to a healthy alignment much more than toe spacers or other orthotics that I have tried. I am very grateful to you Softstar. Having shoes that stretch, bend, and move with my feet is a lovely gift! It should be noted that my wide toe spread (my big toe in particular) is not completely unconstricted in this shoe because of the way the leather narrows towards the perimeter of the toe box. Also, this shoe does require a break-in period if you order to size and your feet are sensitive to constriction. I could not continue to walk, work, and play without softstar shoes-in other words, thank you Softstar for keeping me on my feet!

I gave my order a lot of thought before I placed it (comparing Softstar with other minimalist shoe companies, selecting the kind of shoe I wanted, and following the measuring instructions carefully). Although the quality is beautiful, theses shoes were far too short and pressed uncomfortably against the top of my big toes. I’d say the sizing definitely runs small. Just the ticket for everyday 3-season use

    Rating

I've had these for about two months now. For a few years I've been wearing minimal footwear that has a small drop from the heel, then experienced zero-drop trail shoes last summer. I am not a runner but like to hike during the summer and sometimes walk fairly long distances to shop during other times of the year. I had been dreaming of being able to wear minimal shoes outside of summer months and was hoping I had found the ticket when I bought these RunAmocs for that kind of duty as well as working on my farm when it's not really wet and muddy. The problem with most lightweight flexible zero-drop shoes, as my understanding goes, is that they are also much on the fragile side owing to their flexibility. This was my experience with previous zero-drop shoes. While they felt great, they were not built for the long haul and neither were they sufficiently warm or dry for half the year. In December with temperatures hovering a few degrees above freezing, the Primal RunAmocs are still serving me well. At the beginning I treated them with Nikwax and, while they may not be completely waterproof, they have been keeping my feet dry and warm so far. Compared to conventional molded mainstream minimal shoes, these are, if anything, even more natural and free, plus much more durable, drier and warmer. Perfect for our Wet Coast climate! The sizing was spot on. The chart was perfect in its guidance and the Elves confirmed that for me. My feet are definitely not wide, so the Primal Narrow version was recommended, which seems like the right choice. Lastly, wearing these for awhile has heightened my sensitivity to not only heel-to-toe drop but also sole curvature in all directions, which is what I feel when conditions occasionally force me to wear anything else. These RunAmocs are perfectly flat at the sole front-to-back and side-to-side. I have plans to replace all of my footwear with Softstar models to accommodate all weather and terrain conditions.

    True barefoot!

    Rating

I tried many other brands of "barefoot" and "minimalist" shoes and they all still cramped my toes a little bit or had soles that were too thick and/or not flat. These don't have that over exaggerated upward curl at the toes, nor soles that curve up on the sides that make your stance unstable rolling your ankles in or out (inversion/eversion). This makes the shoes suitable for standing, running or lifting weights. The leather conforms to your foot and there's very subtle padding along the Achilles that keeps your heel from slipping out; I ordered separate anti slip heel pads and never needed them. I had knee pain before these shoes and after a few months of wearing these exclusively, the knee pain became less frequent and is completely gone now. If you're new to barefoot shoes, your feet will get stronger and it seems like the rest of the muscles up the legs engage better, but the first few weeks will be tiring for your feet. Over time you'll adjust and going back to regular shoes makes you feel like you're walking on unstable mattresses. I do a lot of driving and stair climbing for my job and was skeptical how well these would hold up; after 6 months of heavy daily use/abuse these shoes are still in good shape. The only downside is they do look like clown shoes and will turn some heads, however the tradeoff is worth it.
  86. So comfortable!

    Rating

I just read XZ's one star review - it's funny how the same shoe can be completely unsuited to some (XZ) and nearly perfect for others (me). These Primal Runamocs are my first pair of Softstar shoes. I have small but wide and fan-shaped feet, and my little toe always rubbed against the side of shoes, even minimalist "wide" shoes like Lems Primal 2s, which I was using up until I decided to try Softstar Primal Runamocs for their super wide toe box. I used the Softstar printable foot chart for sizing, which puts me at size 5U. (For reference, in the Lems Primal 2, size 6.5 (women) is the most comfortable for me, apart from the little toe issue.) I ordered my Runamocs in size 5U in the regular width and they fit well. Barefoot, 5U might be a little big for me, but as I always wear socks in my shoes, there's no problem. And the toe box is great - finally, space for my toes! I also really like the softness of the leather, the tough but comfortable rubber toe rand at the front of the shoe, and the flatness and flexibility of the sole. I got the Vibram omniflex 5mm option, which is grippy enough for hiking moderately intense trails, but isn't too much for just casually walking down the street. Also, the Runamoc soles are truly flat, unlike Lems Primal 2s, which are a bit rounded, like a bubble of rubber that curves around your foot. However, I do know what XZ means about the Runamoc heel not having much grip on the foot. The thick piece of leather that makes the "cup" doesn't come up all the way to the top of the heel (i.e., doesn't overlap completely at the top with the soft leather that makes up the whole shoe), which results in a somewhat insecure feeling, as if you are wearing heel-less slippers that might come off your feet at any moment. That doesn't seem to actually be the case - my Runamocs handle even strenuous uphill hiking without slipping around... but it does *feel* somewhat insecure. If that feeling still bothers in me in a few weeks, I might try putting some adhesive heel cup padding inside. But overall, the things I like about these Primal Runamocs far, far outweigh this one issue.
  87. 1 Star!!! Almost! But heartbreaking.

    Rating

1 Star!!! I was utterly gobsmacked and elated to find a manufacturer making shoes, any shoes, in realistic widths. I was excited to order a pair of runamocs and thrilled when they arrived. Their leather is butter smooth and the stitching and fabrication top notch. Of course the toe box width and shape is reminiscent of clown shoes but so what, that shape is correct. However.... The heel cups are non existent and there is no structure at all in the back. This makes the heel/back fit awful, slippy and uncomfortable. Secondly, the soles are wispy thin, that seems to be addressed in another version. Ok all that can be forgiven, but what can't be forgiven is the toe box depth and profile. The shoes are flat as a pancake and come back from the front sole stitching at a severely acute angle. For a roomy toebox in one dimension but not in another. Softstar designers must live in a 2D world. Anyway the shoes rub my big toe and nail horrendously. Leaving aching injured toes through just light wear. If I hiked in these as I would have liked, I'd lose nails. Such a shame.
  88. Looks ridiculous, feels amazing

    Rating

I've struggled to find shoes that have a wide enough toe box for months. These shoes, while garnering constant comments of how they look like flippers, platypus feet, clown shoes, etc., are amazing to wear. For the first time, I don't feel like my toes are being squished together. The 5mm sole is thin enough to feel rocks under me, flexible enough to grab onto the ground, and thick enough to avoid too much pain from sharp rocks. I've used them on a few 20+km hikes now and they've held up wonderfully. The bike tubing at the front is genius, as I've scrapped my foot against more than a few rocks. The fit, with a heel lace-lock, is perfect; no slipping whatsoever. 10/10, would buy again.
  89. Great for running and everyday use

    Rating

Just bought a pair of RunAmocs after reading about the benefits of minimalist/barefoot shoes. After a couple weeks of running and walking in these shoes I can say my running/walking feels more natural. My foot fall is lighter and my back feels better postured. The shoe itself is incredibly lightweight and flexes with your foot. Walking around all day in them takes some getting used to as your foot and ankles need time to strengthen. Absolutely satisfied with this purchase. Will be purchasing again when/if these wear out, next time probably the leather soled version, however. Great American company with excellent products.
  90. Perfect for hiking

I got these for trail hiking - I wanted the Megagrip sole so that I could feel confident in my footing. These are so comfortable and super grippy. The Primal shape is awesome, and the leather interior is so nice, I usually wear these without socks.
  91. Best walking / running shoes ever

I wear these for my walk or run every single morning and they have been comfortable from day one. I use a Nisolo insole which also gives some nice textural stimulation. I find these even more comfortable than my barefoot sandals. Thank you for the Primal shoe shape!
  92. Great for 9-hr nursing shifts!

    Rating

After suffering with ill-fitting white sneakers on my size 12N feet through nursing school, I was delighted to purchase a pair of SoftStars for my first bedside nursing job. I work on a physically demanding rehab unit, and the RunAmoc's wide toe box really helps with my stance before I lift and transfer patients. And while I thought I would get razzed a lot for what my spouse calls my "clown shoes", it turns out the opposite is true! Several other nurses and therapists (even one patient!) have asked for information on SoftStar, which I was happy to give :-)
  93. Best shoe ever!

With a foot shape a few deviations from standard I've struggled to find shoes that really fit me. I purchased them to replace my existing running shoes, and for accuracy, fast walking or light jogging would better describe how I use these running shoes. When they arrived my expectations were immediately exceeded. Then after wearing them for a few days I loved my new shows. The only shoes I've kept on all day cause I forget I am wearing them. Well, not forget, just don't bother or distract me. I am picking out a more casual shoe this time and will be submitting my next order soon.

  97. Soft and Flexible

    Rating

This is my first pair of adult Softstar shoes and my first barefoot shoe. I spent a lot of time barefoot in my home, and when I go for a hike in these feel like I am still walking barefoot. It is really a phenomenal feeling if you haven't experienced it, and I'm so glad I gave it a try. The leather is so soft and the soles are incredibly flexible. Unlike flat cheap shoes that I would despise, these (while entirely flat) will bend and flex with the foot so you can walk naturally. I can even go without socks and be comfortable. I'm typically an 8.5 in women's shoes, and I got an 8U Narrow at the suggestion of customer service. I have never worn a narrow shoe in my life and would have gotten the regular width without their guidance, and I'm sure it would have been too wide. These are plenty wide! I echo other reviewers that I feel like I am going to break the heel each time I pull on the shoe; it just feels very soft and not sturdy. That doesn't mean it will wear too quickly but the feel is certainly enough to make me cautious when putting them on. If you're transitioning to this shoe, I'd suggest wearing your regular shoe for the first part of a hike and then switching to these. I've noticed that my ankles, feet, and lower leg muscles get tired more quickly than in more traditional shoes. Four miles of hiking in these makes my lower legs exhausted and I find I need to sit with my feet up for a while afterwards. (I'm an athlete and so this is quite surprising!) My feet don't hurt from the shoes and there is no pinching or pain or anything like that, but I find it is just a much more tiring experience overall. I imagine this will change as strength improves. Walking on pavement is much different than on a trail. I can't imagine trading my in-town running shoes for these as the lack of padding would probably be brutal. Overall, I'm quite pleased. My kids wore Softstar shoes when they were small, and the shoes lasted through many kids and were in fantastic condition for years. I hope for the same with this model.

I love my softstar shoes. I am re-learning how to walk without landing hard on my heel :). They feel great, they're super comfortable, the leather is soft and pliable, & so far they're holding up well (~1 month of wearing). I ordered 8U at first, because I was right on the border, but had to send them back & get 7U. The 7U felt too tight at first, but - first time in my life - the shoes actually stretched a bit and now the fit couldn't be better. I will be buying more! Only complaint is laces aren't quite long enough, I don't like having to fiddle around tightening and loosening the laces just enough to be able t0 tie a bow.

Great so far, the heal feels too light.

    Rating

These shoes are great. I threw them on and went for a run. The extra large to box gives them a bit of a funny look, and they make a bit more noise than I am used to. That aside they're cool to run in and very comfortable. They have a good layer of vibram that was a problem with my previous shoes so they give some good protection. My only issue, is that the heal is really soft and I feel a little bad using it to tug them on. I would like a little reinforcement back there. That said, I've only put a hundred miles on them, so it might not be an issue at all. I like the way the shoes are wearing in though, can't wait to get some more miles in.
  102. So Soft

    Rating

For the most part, these shoes are amazing! The leather is ultra soft and I like that the shoe is made so much more naturally than the bulk of shoes on the market. My one (minor) complaint is that the shoe laces that come with the shoes are very short - I cannot tie them in a bow, but have to just tie a knot. And I need some cush and arch support. Have tried a few things, including the Softstar T-form Metatarsal pads, but so far haven't found the perfect match for my finicky feet. I would not recommend the Metatarsal pads though, for this style of shoe - almost impossible to get them into the shoe.
  103. Sigh of relief

    Rating

I could easily write a novel about my foot health and footware of the past, but will just suffice it to say that after wearing these shoes, there is no turning back - there is no way I will try to squeeze my toes into anything else. I have even devoted my first-bought pair to garden work as I spend a lot of time out there and bare feet are the only viable alternative, just not in winter! My custom-mades with 2mm soles are great too. Although I live in Denmark, I love the fact that Softstar Shoes is a small, American business, that I intend to support in the future. I look forward to new models with this wide toe box. A few ideas could be: Primal RunAmocs with leather soles, ankle boots lined with sheepskin, and rubber boots ????

These are great. So comfortable! Wider than expected and they do look a tad clown like but I figured that from the start. I have rather skinny feet but wide at the toe knuckles. Usually have trouble with shoes being sloppy around the ankle and mid foot if they are wide enough at the toe box. These are Locked in though. The fit and finish is incredible and the leather is beautiful. I really noticed a big difference in how my foot moves when wearing them. I am proud that I can buy something so nicely made in the USA. Keep up the good work and thanks for staying open through the pandemic

The Primal RunAmocs are the second pair of Softstar shoes that I own and they've exceeded my expectations on what a quality minimalist shoe should be. So far, I've worn them on technical trails to semi formal events, and they've perfected every usage opportunity thrown at them. Further, they've garnered an interest and struck up conversation by many, whom I've steered to Softstar. These are the best minimalist shoes ever and their design is not only functional, but unique.

So I had to order these twice because the Primal sole is a different shape than the Balerine sole. In the Balerine I wear a 9Wide, in the RunAmoc I wear an 8Narrow. Also I recommend the extra heal supports sold separately. So glad I had them remade instead of just returning them. I sprung for the custom colors. The oxblood color is so beautiful, its a deep velvety maroon, the leather quality is divine. I wish they made belts and purses too so I could have all of my accessories this handsome color.

  110. So Comfy I forget I'm Wearing Them

    Rating

Blown away. These should be the standard. I work at a physio clinic and see multiple people come in with foot pain (bunions, flat feet, plantar fasciitis) and it's mostly because of the effects of improper footwear over time. Mainstream footwear these days are designed to cause you pain because of all the unnecessary padding that weakens the muscles in your feet over time and the improperly shaped toe boxes that cause tightness, bunions, and compensation all the way up the kinetic chain over time. These shoes are the perfect solution (as long as you size them correctly of course). They will hurt you if your walking mechanics are off and the right stabilizer muscles are not firing correctly and will cause some aching as you retrain the muscles of the feet but it's a very small price to pay for a long-term foot pain free lifestyle!

    Rating

I LOVE THESE! Extremely comfortable and well made.
  112. Amazing width and traction!

    Rating

These are the best shoes for folks like me with wide feet. They offer the truest foot shaped shoe of any shoe on the market other than original model Birkenstocks. Unlike Birkenstocks, they are much more flexible and have superior traction. One can run and hike in them but they are attractive enough to wear with slacks. My only complaint is that the material on the heel does not extend up high enough so it feels almost like the shoe is not on all the way even when it is. That and the laces are too short. My only other wish is that: 1. Softstar make these shoes available in toddler and little kid sizes, 2. That they make a version that is waterproof (or at least more water resistant--for those of us in the PNW) and has more cushion (to make long distance running in them more feasible, especially for older folks who've lost their natural cushioning), 4. That they make a boot version that is waterproof and has more cushion (for customers who do a lot of hiking in the elements).

  113. Great for trail running

    Rating

I bought these shoes exactly one year ago, and they are still going strong. I use them for trail running in wet and muddy conditions. If it's really wet I use them with waterproof socks which is a great combination. Despite getting soaken wet and very dirty several times the leather is still in a very good condition. The only minus is that the grip isn't too good in frosty weather. Although my feet are on the wider side I decided to order the narrow fit. That was a good choice as there's still plenty of room for my toes, but the shoes aren't too loose for my narrow heels and ankles.

These are great, well made shoes! I am a chiropractor and wear these most days while with patients. Personally, I would not run or exercise in these shoes. They do not breathe, and therefore, you will likely get swamp foot

    Response from store

Thank you for your review! We encourage you to try them when exercising - the leather is actually very breathable and one consistent thing our fans rave about is the resulting "no odor" factor of our shoes. Please give it a try and let us know how it goes for you.
  115. Athletic Appropriate

    Rating

I was apprehensive about buying a shoe to replace my conventional athletic shoes but my duckfeet have suffered far too long - as I have gone years squeezing into shoes with narrow toe boxes. My biggest concern was that my WIDE feet wouldn't fit into the shoe properly. (My feet are short and seriously wide. No kidding.) After emailing Elf Alison several times she advised me on which pair would be the best fit (5U in Primal, 5U Wide in other styles) and reminded me of the return policy should they not work out. After some thought I decided to give the Primal RunAmoc a try. So glad I did. I am loving my new shoes. I can wear my correcttoes and love that my feet don't hurt after an hour of power walking. Thank you Alison and Softstar for providing me with a healthy alternative shoe.

Found Softstar shoes - flew across the country - visited the store ( pre covid) and its now been 2 years and I only wear Softstar shoes during the summer. Wish they would make a waterproof winter boot. ???? anyways my knees no longer burn or have nerve pain! And it took awhile but my feet now look healthy! I have friends that don't care for the look of the shoes instead they opt to get surgery on thier poor hurting feet for their " unc urable hammer toe" you chose what you want to do. I'm only wearing soft star shoes! Cons : due to low profile feet get wet is is raining out. I wear 12 regularly in primal run a muc and 14 wide in chukkas. It was a little pricy cuz I bought several before I found the right size and wore them so I couldn't return them. Still worth it.
  117. Wide but short toe box, insecure heel

    Rating

The horizontal space in the toebox is great --- but the vertical space is lacking. In normal shoes, my toes feel pinched from the sides; in these shoes, my toes have plenty of room side-to-side (finally!), but feel pinched top-to-bottom. Also, the heel feels loose, even in the recommended size (which means I could not fix the lack of vertical toe room by ordering a size up --- then the heel was way to loose). In addition to the the wide toe box, other welcome features include a comfortable upper material, and a nicely expanded lacing system. In future versions of this shoe, I would hope that softstar could preserve the good features this shoe has, while adding more vertical space for the toes, making the heel more narrow and snug, and increasing the height of the heel counter.

Concern: my feet are sensitive in most barefoot shoes. Answer: The Omniflex Vibram sole and leather midsole. I use these shoes for outdoor cross training and street running. I love these shoes. That's why I live in them. I've had gout for many years so my toe joints are sensitive, and my podiatrist thought I would need a stiffer sole to prevent my toes from flexing. But he was totally wrong. The oversized toe box keeps all the pressure off of my toes, and the feeling of walking barefoot is pure joy. Actually, I thought I was just getting these shoes for hiking, since even the best "normal" hiking shoes are too uncomfortable. And yes, my SoftStar shoes also excel as hiking shoes with their excellent traction and staying solidly against my heels going up and down hills. Meanwhile I thought the lock laces were a bit pricey, but they actually turn out to be worth it because of the convenience. Look, I actually look forward to putting on my shoes every morning. Never experienced that before.
  129. My Softstar Review and Sizing Info

Softstar makes my favorite shoes. I hope this review persuades you to pull the trigger and buy a pair. I also hope this helps you avoid sizing problems. Quality of material 11 out of 10 - I’ve never felt better quality leather. Btw Softstar, any plans to make wallets? Comfort 11 out of 10 - The most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. Fit 11 out of 10 - Fits like a glove, when you get the right size. Weight 11 out of 10 - The lightest shoes I own. I bet the only more lightweight shoes are those high-performance running shoes for athletes. Customer Service 10 out of 10 - They are so friendly, helpful, and quick whenever I have a question or a problem. Environment 10 out of 10 - They’re so committed to the environment. And I love that they only use ONE piece of paper for my entire order. Construction 8.5 out of 10 - The soles are starting to get unglued on my oldest pair (Primal RunAmocs). No real problems yet, but I’m concerned it will get worse. Sizing 6 out of 10 - Pretty all over the place. Part of the reason I’m writing this review. I have the Primal RunAmocs in 10U, the Primal Sawyers in 11U, and the Dash RunAmocs in 12U. They all fit amazingly! I got the Hawthorne Chukkas in 11U wide based on a review I read, but I should have gotten the Hawthorne Chukkas in 12U WIDE (they’re too tight, but I wore them a bunch before really realizing it - going to keep trying to stretch them out once it’s not so hot out). Repairs 5 out of 10 - I think only the Chukkas can be resoled. It might be just a limitation of minimalist shoes. I’d love it if they came up with some ingenious way to make all of them resole-able, though. I wear a size 15 so my shoes look a bit clownish, but they feel so good. I went through two months of ordering and sending shoes back. My feet had expanded during quarantine and nothing was comfortable. It was like hunting for a unicorn, “This brand has a wide toe box” “ No, this brand is wider and foot shaped.” It took a elven miracle to fit my feet. I went from “this shoe hurts less “ to I can sprawl my toes. They may look a bit like clown shoes, but I love them so much. I feel like I am wearing big comfy gloves on my feet. Thank you so much Elves.
  131. Favorite shoes I've owned, questioning their durability.

    Rating

First off I should say these have been my favorite shoes I have ever owned and likewise all my inquiries with the softstar "elves" were promptly and helpfully responded. The other disclaimer I should make is I'm an off grid homesteader and these shoes were exposed to a decent amount of moisture in their use, which might have accelerated their normal wear. I ordered a pair a year ago and within a month the heels started coming unglued. Softstar said this was a mistake and sent me a 2nd pair, while kindly (and to my surprise) letting me keep the 1st pair. To their credit the 2nd pair has never showed any signs of coming unglued. Now i had two pairs of the same shoe which in theory should have made each of them last twice as long, but 7 months later the stitching attaching the upper leather to the leather soul (that is glued to the rubber bottoms) was coming undone in multiple places on each shoe. Using some artificial sinew, i sewed each of them back together. This fix lasted for awhile until now there are more places were the seam has came undone as well as holes finally wearing though the rubber bottoms. I was told when the seems were coming undone the first go around that waterproofing the shoes would preserve them something silly I hadn't thought of and never did. So I can't say for sure how these should would normally hold up under other circumstances. When homesteading, sometimes you get caught in the rain, or it has just rained and the ground is still wet everywhere. During the mornings the dew is everywhere which can quickly soak the leather and while carrying 5 gallons buckets of water to the gardens it is easy for water to spill on the shoes etc. In needing a new pair of shoes I actually bought some boots from another "wide toe box" company hoping they would be more durable for my circumstances, but having been on a bear foot widening journey for the last few years, they were not at all wide enough and so much narrower then the run amocs (and are being sent back). Eventually I hope to make my own frugal shoes, but in the mean time i've noticed soft star has come out with the mega grip run amocs. Given how wide and freeing this style is, and how it can and for me, has aided in the widening and strengthening process of my feet, I'm going to give those a go. Hopefully being more mindful about waterproofing this time around will allow them to stand up to their use longer.

I have been through sooo many minimalist running shoes over the years and these are by far my favorite. Take the time to measure your foot properly before buying though as the sizing you usually get with other shoes may not be what you should be wearing with these. I did all of the measurements in advance of purchasing and it was a size smaller than I would have bought otherwise. I have done mostly road running, but I have a hiking trip planned in July and am eager to hit the trails. They are definitely the most comfortable shoes I've worn for running and they look way better than some others I've used over the years. ;) My only disappointment is that as of now, they don't seem to come in a vegan option.

First few miles on the shoes and I mist say they are very comfortable. Very good grip, and perfect fit. Installing the heel anti-slip pad took a little figuring out, but just placed it in so the top lined up with the top of the heel, and then cut out the rest. I will admit they are a little different looking, compared to the conventional tiny toe box shoes, but after explaining the benefits, and the added comfort they give most people are actually pretty excited about them. As a flight instructor its paramount that I have a good idea of what my students are doing on the rudder peddles of what ever aircraft I'm flying, and the Vibram 5mm Omniflex is a great balance of protection and feeling what your walking on. The Elves have really out done themselves!
  139. Good but not perfect

    Rating

I am a woman with EE feet and narrow heels, so basically off the shelf shoes don't fit. At first I actually thought that these shoes were too wide for me, something I have never experienced before in my life! Then after wearing them for a couple of hours I realized that actually they just fit me , what a concept! No toe rubbing or pinching, and my toes can move when I walk. I go barefoot or wear sandals as much as possible, but these shoes are so comfortable that I sometimes forget to take them off when I get home. Why only 4 stars? First, they need insoles, so I added them (the Spenco green flat ones work great.) Second, the heel fit is not very good, my heel slips around a bit. The heel needs to come up just a little higher, and lace a bit more securely. They are not sturdy enough for actual trail running or hiking, they would get torn up, although I have used them for easy hikes and walks. The heel slippage is annoying however. Mostly I just use them as a super comfortable everyday shoe! Very glad to have them, I got 2 pairs! I hope they will make a trail model with a thicker sturdier sole, insoles, and better heel fit. This would be perfect!
  140. Have been looking my entire life for shoes actually shaped like my feet, and I love these.

    Rating

Have been looking my entire life for shoes actually shaped like my feet, and I love these. Did not have any real difficulty adjusting to the minimalist sole and was able to start wearing these for my five-mile walk from the first day. I do wish they came with longer laces. Even without a foot in the shoe, the ones provided just barely tied. When I put them on, I had to leave two rows of eyelets unlaced to get enough length to tie. Also, when measuring for size, keep in mind what kind of socks you want to wear with your shoes. The website sizing guide recommends measuring barefoot and says the leather will stretch some and conform to your feet. Here in the Green Mountains we live in wool socks about ten months of the year and rarely hike or work outdoors without socks because of ticks. My shoes have not stretched much. They fit with very thin socks and have become my favorites for wearing indoors, but I am going to order another pair at least a size larger for year-round and outdoor use.
  141. This is the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn.

    Rating

After wearing the Primal Run Amoc for one and a half years, the outer soles were so worn down in spots that I knew I needed a replacement pair. The leather on the shoe and inside sole were still great, however. I wish I could send this pair back to Soft Star for a replacement outer sole. I now have a brand new pair with the New Vibran sole, which seems to be wearing much better. This is the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. Fortunately, I live in a retirement home and walk mainly on rugs as opposed to sidewalks. That keeps wear and tear down. The most difficult thing for me was placing the Pedag pads in my shoes. I had watched the video on this several times and I can easily find the right placement for them just holding them against my feet, but trying to think backwards to place them in my shoes was just impossible. I took them to my podiatrist (nice gal, but not trained in the value of minimalist shoes. I told her how to place them. One seems to have worked, but the other is not at the exact spot where I needed them. You know, it's very tricky to place those Pedag pads in the shoes, bit I do know that the Pedag pads make a difference for the better. At age 81, and only about four years into wearing minimalist shoes, I think it may be too late to make a difference, but I still prefer Soft Star to other minimalist shoes I've checked out. They are good for my extra-wide toes, and the heels (normal size) fit nice and snug with the laces provided. I think I have a foot bone that must hang a bit lower than my other bones, because every four or five weeks, I need to have the podiatrist cut off calluses. My running days are over and I never ran to compete, so I walk instead of run. I do find it helps to take the Soft Star shoes off around mid-day, along with taking off my Correct Toes, to let my feet relax from all that minimalist gadgetry. I also find that exercising my feet in the morning and evening is a big help to loosen them up. I like only the black Run Amoc shoe. All those fancy colors that Soft Star features are, to me, weird looking. Even one extra color on the shoe seems entirely unnecessary and does not necessarily go with the clothes I am wearing. One of the elves (a woman) picked a good size shoe for me the first time I bought a pair, and that seems to remain good for me.

    Softstar gets runners

    Rating

I purchased the primal run amocs with trail sole so I could wear wool socks with these to have a barefoot shoe to run in winter. The thick trail sole kept me warm but it has a stiffness that gave a slapping feel. Now I own the new omniflex sole and it it PERFECT. Enough thickness for warmth but still have ground feel and moves with your foot better. The narrow gives plenty of room for toe splay and fits super comfortably from the start.. Thanks Softstar! More than half of my shoes, dress and athletic are from you!

I love these shoes. They are comfortable and exactly what I was looking for to help bring vitality back to my feet. I wear the toe spacers with them and have noticed more aliveness and dexterity in my feet. Highly recommended. Also, I have the thinner sole which I enjoy though I don't know what the thicker one would feel like.

    Shoes shaped like healthy feet!

    Rating

It shouldn't be special for shoes to be shaped like feet, yet here we are. The sole is the best shape I've ever seen. The rest of the shoe is soft and flexible. The leather breaks in a little to fit my feet; the toebox was a bit cramped vertically at first. I wear these for hiking and running. With some waterproofing wax, they hold up to dampness, dew, and rain, but I've been advised not to wade in them. The toe protection is great. In my minimalist shoe experience, I've hurt my sole once when the trail turned quickly from sandy to rocky, but I've stubbed my toe many times. The shoes can be a bit warm in summer, so I got some thinner, cooler socks. Be aware that wearing these shoes may change the shape of your feet as they become more healthy and strong, which may affect fit. I was a size 11, but then my arches got stronger, so my next pair will be size 10.

These are my favorite shoes by far, nothing even comes in as a close second. I now own 3 pairs of them myself and just bought a pair for my 8 yo daughter. If these are ever discontinued I will not know what to do! (By the way, if this should ever happen, please let me know in advance so I can purchase about a dozen more pair) I have owned many kinds and brands of "barefoot" shoes, but none of them compare to Softstar Primal RunAmoc's. My only wish is that these would be available in a boot at some point for hiking in the mountains in the winter. By the way, I wear my Primal RunAmocs all winter in the midwest (with a pair of heavy cushion Darn Tough wool socks) and my feet have yet to get cold. Absolute perfection! I challenge anyone to find a better pair of minimalist shoes anywhere at any price.

    Rating

I have a love-hate relationship with SoftStar. I love that they make leather shoes (instead of synthetics), that they're local and that they are made in the USA. The one thing I dislike is I feel they have focused solely (no pun intended) on their uppers and have completely neglected their sole options. I mean, there's only two options. C'mon. I run trails and while their street sole might be good for street, the trail sole simply sucks. Not only does it not protect your feet from technical terrain (sharp rocks), the little nubs can get clogged with mud and subsequently provide very limited traction. Where I run (in the Columbia River Gorge), sharp rocks are everywhere. I have many times found myself limping home because a rock has punctured through the sole of my shoe and into my foot. I gave up on softstar and went to Luna Sandals for a while, then to Altras. Tired of purchasing new running shoes every few months, I purchased a pair of softstars again and had a cobbler put a combination crepe mid-sole and vibram Zegama sole on them. I'm calling them TrailStars. Sometimes, you simply have to take matters into your own hands. I'm hoping SoftStar will offer something substantial in the sole department in the future so I don't have to spend a fortune to have some trail shoes that will not only last long, but perform well on all terrain.

    Soft Leather, exceptional ground feel

    Rating

Got Primal RunAmoc with 2mm soles. My foot is right between U10 and U11, was recommended by Elves to go with U10, which fits me well. On the initial impression the shoes felt a bit small due to lack of volume, but the leather is quite soft and stretches well, so now I have enough volume and the fit is just perfect. I like the 2mm soles. They are dense but flexible to the extend that the sole itself moulds to the shape of my foot. The ground feel is exceptional. In general the fit of the shoes remind my old leather gloves. They feel more like leather socks, not shoes. On the durability side: so far so good, but I only use them to go to work and don't run in them.

These are the best shoes I've ever owned. FINALLY A TOE BOX SHAPED LIKE A HEALTHY FOOT. Are you like I was? Always wanting a wider toe box but every time you ordered "wide" shoes just getting a wider last at the heel and more room in the ankle area? Were you always feeling like your toes just couldn't quite get the space they needed?? BUY THESE SHOES. I can wear my toe separators in these without any squishing or pressure against the sides of the shoe. Finally, finally, finally...someone prioritized function over form in creating a shoe that feels great to wear.

I love these shoes. I have been wearing Vibram Five Fingers exclusively for over a decade. I only wear the most minimal they make too. I am a long distance runner (150 half marathons last year as an example). I wear them wet, dry, hot, cold, sun, rain, snow, always. However on some really wet or cold days I do wish my toes could stay maybe a little drier. However after the long term stint without “normal” shoes squeezing my feet and warping my toes, I have barefoot Amazon-jungle-native like feet. I’ve tried a few options like Vivobarefoot (suck), and Xero shoes (suck). I was going to try making my own for fun and just continuing with the VFFs but I happened upon the Primal RunAmocs. I ordered some custom colors, all Shiny Ruby in fact. They look ridiculous and I’m happy about that. Haha. Anyway, my toes are actually not squeezed. I’ve seen a few mentions that the toe box is a little too wide, but I assure you mine toes are taking ALL of that space. They seem sturdy. The bottom is very thin which I like. The best part is that it was raining earlier and my toes stayed dry! No they aren’t waterproof by any means, but the closed toes keep the standing water on the ground out. Thank you for making these. They are absolutely perfect. I will buy more when these wear out. Well done. FINALLY! Perfect minimalist shoes for someone with feet used to it.

Finally a shoe that can comfortably fit along with my Correct Toes toe spacers. I've spent about a month running in them and am still transitioning to the lower cushion compared to my former running shoes, but they are serving me well. Love the soft light feel of the leather upper so much that I much prefer wearing them without socks, which has been a rarity for me in other shoes! Plus, they're a terrific conversation piece wherever I go in them.
  153. Delightful and addictive to wear!

    Rating

I bought these in black, size 12U regular width and imported them them to the UK. Had to pay VAT and charges of about £35. It was worth it though- the shoe is delightful and addictive to wear- even for somebody who likes to go barefoot as much as possible. After not wearing shoes for most of the summer the 2mm sole felt hard and stiff to start with. I even flirted with the idea of sending them back! However, the sole does start to flex and become malleable with a few wears. Ground feel is good rather than superb but this shoe is all about the leather and fit. I have narrowish feet but with a lovely natural toe splay and the primals allow my toes to spread naturally which is a joy...and now a problem because my other brands of minimalist shoes that I wear to work now feel too tight and restrictive. And of course the leather- well that’s what Softstar do so well, It’s buttery soft, flexible and incredibly comfortable. All in all a wonderful all purpose shoe for when you have to put something on your feet. Thank you Softstar, I’d better get saving for my next pair!

I discovered two months ago through my personal trainer that I have the beginnings of hammer toes on my left foot and the very beginning of a bunion on my right big toe. My soft star shoes are a vital member of my toe and foot saving team along with exercises, massage and manipulation. I've thrown out all of my small toe box shoes and sneakers. 160. Took Some Trial-and-Error to Find a Good Size, But Love 'Em

    Rating

I'm currently in my second pair of Primal RunAmocs and love 'em. Though, I have had to zero-in on sizing. And, I did have to reform my footfall so that I wasn't wearing-out my Primals with a heavy heel-strike. Overall: they fit wonderfully well, they're great on the trail (it's like getting a foot massage, especially over rocks!), and I wear them everywhere. Size-wise, I've been very happy with my second pair, which is a 10U in regular width. My first pair was an 11U regular, which itself was a size-down from what I usually wore in more conventional shoes (Men's size 12 in wide from the likes of Nike, New Balance, and Asics). I remember the toebox on my first pair of Primals feeling more and more cavernous with every month I wore them. Though, they were very comfortable throughout the foot, and the wide toebox allowed adequate room for my toes to do their thing. I ordered a size down into a 10U regular on my second pair to see if they'd be shorter in the toes than my first pair by a few fractions of an inch, and they fit great! When I tried them on for the first time, the toebox didn't feel clownish like my first pair, and the shoes fit more like a glove. And yet they have loosened up a little with time while still being snug. I feel giddy every time I put them on and love going outside in them. I became aware that my footfall was an issue for the Primals after I had a helpful exchange with the Elves by email about my first pair, about some wear patterns I noticed developing where the sole meets the leather at the very back of the heel. They said such a pattern may indicate a heavy heel-strike. So, I observed how I moved, being more aware of my feet and legs and posture and how I walked; yep, heavy heel-strike. It took me several months to reform my footfall; I got a start by paying attention to my footfall and by trying new ways of moving my legs and feet so that I wasn't coming-down so hard on my heel (it was a months-long process, but I feel like it has became a meditative practice for me), and I also searched for articles and videos online that demonstrated the body mechanics of different strike patterns. My first pair of Primals did wear-out after a handful of months at back of the heel where the leather meets the sole, but my second pair is now going on month six - they don't have the patterns of wear like my first pair, and I feel a lot better about the way I walk in them, and the shoes look like they're in better shape overall than the first pair, and I feel like the shoes and I have walked many more miles together to boot. I'm very happy with my Primals, and am more grateful now for my feet, my shoes, and my relationship with the folks at SoftStar.

I love my Softstar Primals. They were the first of 5 pairs of Softstar that I purchased. I started having sore feet this past February and through working online with Softstar, I realized that my shoes were too small. Now, I love shoes! So a 30 gallon garbage bag went to out the backdoor and 5 pairs of Softstar came in the front door. My feet have never been happier. The Primal is my daily go to. I feel like and Elf. My primal are so beautiful and comfortable. Wide, flexible and flat...my feet, my pelvis, my shoulders and my neck and head are straighter and stronger. Thanks to all the Softstar Elves. Christine

    Rating

Have been wearing my Primal RunAmocs for a few weeks. Enjoying them a lot. Lovely and soft and spacious at the toes. They accommodate my quite bad bunions (with 'correct toes' sometimes) comfortably and I will walk anywhere in them. Also wore them on 10 hr flight recently and feet were just as comfortable at the end. I like how they look but they get some stares and comments. They are not quite as comfortable on the rear of the foot as Lems Boulder Boots - but those are not really wide enough across the bunion area. Overall very pleased.
  165. the best shoes

    Rating

Normally I wear a size 13, but decided to go up to a size 14 for the primal. At that size they're very wide in the toe. I saw a video on children's feet (I think it was a feelmax video), and the child's foot looked like the outline of the toe box in the primal. When I first got them I thought they looked very wide in the toe area (because I ordered a size larger), but that's the way a shoe should look, and from the front like looking at a mirror, it looks good.
  166. Best Shoes Ever!

    Rating

These are the best shoes I've ever owned, best for my specific feet at least. I have wide toes relative to my heel width, so shoe heels are always too big on me, either flapping around or digging up into my Achilles tendon. These shoes hold my heel and midfoot perfectly, with just the right amount of snugness, while giving my toes total freedom. The leather is soft, and I get what people mean when they called these shoes "gloves for your feet". The softness of the leather and the very light weight, combined with the perfect fit around my heel and arch/midfoot, makes it feel like they're sort of an extension of my body. The other reviewers who said these look like clown shoes are absolutely right. I'm considering taking them to a cobbler to see if they can add a tapered toe cap, which would change the silhouette and maybe make them look more like a normal shoe. That would require re-soling, and I'm not sure whether the end result will look like a "normal shoe" or more like a "bizarre Frankenstein shoe experiment", but you never know until you try! These shoes get five stars, even when taking the aesthetics into consideration, because there literally are no other shoes on the market that are this comfortable for my feet.

Finally enough room for my pinkie toes!

    Rating

Finally enough room for my pinkie toes! They stick out slightly, making most shoes very painful. I own some other Softstar styles that work well after breaking in. These fit my slightly duck shaped feet great! I actually find there is more room than needed at the big toe, but it doesn’t bother me. I’ve been wearing these on mini hikes lately and find that the wide soles can make them feel a bit like snow shoes when walking on dry grass, which I find hilarious. I love my duck shoes!

Thank you so much for these shoes! Please make more in the primal shape. I would love to have some Merry Janes to wear for dressy occasions. These are the only shoes I can wear because of the space I need for my toes while wearing CorrectToes. I started wearing CorrectToes to fix my planter fasciitis and swollen knee. I was starting to walk with a limp. Now everything is fine. I can walk normally for miles, and the inflammation in my knee disappeared. People think my clown shoes are cute. To me, they are the shoes that don't make my feet cry.
  169. Best Minimalist Trail Running Shoes

    Rating

These shoes are the best minimalist trail running shoes I have ever used. I have run in different models of 5-fingers shoes, New Balance, Merrell Trail gloves and Vivo-Barefoot shoes. The PRIMALs provide the best balance of ground feel, toe box, agility, grip and bruising protection. I had been previously running in the Moc3's, and while they feel fantastic and I try to go as barefoot-like as possible, the minimal sole thickness inevitably led to pretty sore feet after a few miles of trails with small rocks and roots. The PRIMALs are thicker but the ground feel is almost the same as the MOC3's. Now I can trail run 10 miles and my feet won't get bruised at all. The first time I tried them I thought the heel cup felt a little weird, but after only a few hundred yards up the trail my heel settled in and it felt great. The super wide toe box looks a little goofy, and I didn't think I would really need it that big because my feet aren't usually cramped (except for those Merrell trail gloves), but the toe box on these PRIMALs really allows your toes to open up and grip the ground so much better. The inner tube toe material is definitely a plus, since I tend to wear a hole in the toes of my MOC3's after a while. They also have great grip. I have been crossing streams on downed wet trees with no falls in the water yet. They do keep the water out pretty well too (which was another trail running negative to the MOC3's). I'll keep running these shoes as long as Softstar keeps making them.

Favorite shoe so far. Good grip even on slippery ice. Insole molds to foot, very comfortable. Will probably purchase in 2mm come summer.
  171. So Close to Greatness...

    Rating

The Primals are exceedingly comfortable. With what might be the most generously sized toe box ever constructed, all but the widest of feet should be able to slip into these with ease. The flexibility of the zero drop soles also allows for movement that gives the illusion of being nearly shoe-less, truly an accomplishment. The appearance of the shoe depends partly on the color scheme selected, but the general design is low-key and is arguably suitable for a variety of functions alongside the many recreational activities for which the sole is arguably intended. So, why not five stars? Unfortunately, the shoes have a number of problems that somewhat offset their positive qualities. While the width of the shoe is nice, the fact that it only comes in full sizes means that, if you are an in-between fit, you should probably order up a size. This might not seem like a problem, but if you want to do any sort of semi-technical running or workout in these shoes (or you simply want to avoid slapping sounds while walking), the extra length can be quite bothersome. This might, perhaps, be ameliorated if the shoes had a lower profile at the otherwise wonderful toe, but then thicker feet would likely have a harder time with the shoes. Alternatively, a different lacing system might help, but that could substantially alter the shoe's pleasantly simple appearance. The other issue has to do with durability. While the leather uppers, aside from a few scuffs, have proved resilient, in less than a year my pair's soles have been heavily worn down in a number of spots (some edges to about 1 mm), and suffered two tears: one in a toe cap, the other in a heel seam. Both of these were surprises. The toe cap, being made of "recycled bicycle tire" as I understand it, was easily cut while protecting me from a stubbed toe on a rock. I appreciate the service, but I would think that such a material would handle that sort of encounter better. Fortunately, given its construction, it could be easily repaired with some liquid rubber. The heel seam tear, on the other hand, is more problematic and seems to have resulted from nothing more than ordinary use over about an eight-month span (I should add that, while I did run a handful of 5 kilometer workouts in the shoes, they were mostly used for walking on concrete and dirt surfaces, so nothing terribly rigorous was involved here). Since none of the other materials appear to be damaged, I assume that the shoe simply needs to be re-stitched; that is to say, it should be reparable (although I will need to take it to a professional to do so). I suspect, however, that this issue also highlights a weakness in the Primal's design: since the shoe is, effectively, sewn together and then stitched/glued to an out-sole, this means that the lower stitching for the insole is vulnerable to a great deal of wear-and-tear that most modern shoes need not contend with (since this portion is typically covered by a protective layer). In point of fact, this part of the design was also an initial concern for me, as it seemed that one could easily get the exposed out-sole caught on something and then have it potentially ripped away from the rest of the shoe. I had mostly gotten over this concern, but now with the seam rip I find myself worrying once again. So, the overall verdict: I think that the Primal is a great concept with some blunders in the execution that hold it back. If Softstar could resolve these issues, namely sizing, rubber quality, stitch quality, and the general life-proofing of the design, it might really achieve excellence.
  172. Widest Toe Box

    Rating

This is best shoe I have ever owned. It is the only size 14 that fits perfect. Every other shoe I have purchased from other manufacturers is not long enough for my 4th and 5th Toes. I have to size up and buy a 15 and have an inch too much above my big toe. This 14u fits amazing. I purchased a normal width, and it fits all of my toes better than any other 14 from other brands. I would like to see a wide option down the line with a little more room for toe splay so I could use my Correct Toes with this shoe. The rubber in front works great for having ample toe room for wiggling them up and down and splaying. The amount of eyelets is perfect. The laces are soft and really nice. The footbed is super comfortable, I got the 5mm so I won’t judge the ground feel vs a Vivobarefoot 3mm, it isn’t comparable but the 2mm will be my summer purchase. The mid/insole doesn’t appear to be removable, which is great so it doesn’t move around. It is flat instead of having a cheesy arch support. This shoe feels more comfortable than Vivobarefoot Gobi II. The heel has padding only for about half of the height and it feels like it fits loose. Weird while putting it on, but feels normal while wearing and didn’t slip at all. The 5mm sole has really good grip. It grips much better on ice than the Gobi II lugs. Would love to see your other boots and shoes offered in this sole shape. Very impressed with customer service. Quick emails, friendly thorough people. Highly recommend your company and look forward buying more of your products!

First thing you want to do when you get home is to take off your shoes. Not so with these. A true Life Changer! I was surfing the internet for a good zero drop casual shoe with a roomy toe box. A ran across these Softstar shoes but I thoughts they looked goofy so I ordered a few other brands shoes that I thought were decent put not perfect when trying them out. Finally though I went ahead and ordered a pair of black Primal RunAmoc shoes with 2mm sole. Nowadays these shoes are the only ones leaving the closet... Also got a pair for my 6 year old. Same there, he won't wear anything else...
  175. If you use correct toes you need these shoes.

    Rating

I love this shoe. I’ve been looking for a shoe that would work with my correct toes toe spacers forever. These do, way beyond any other shoe I’ve tried (and I’ve tried most). If you use correct toes you need these shoes. All the other shoes out there that are “barefoot” shoes still have a toe box that’s a little too narrow to really “splay” your toes. This is the first actual shoe I’ve seen that doesn’t try to adhere to fashion at all they are all function and freedom! Which isn’t to say they don’t look good, they do! Very well made too. I was so impressed I bought some for both my sons as well. They don’t need correct toes and as long as they wear these they never will! Don’t hesitate… getcha a pair! The inner tube toe cap is genius, especially for my boys… If the heel slips a little when you first put them on don’t worry keep walking, it stops quickly. Also, for the boys 7 and 8 yo I went up a size for room to grow. My “normal” size was usually an 11.5 with a foot length just a hair over 11” the U12 was perfect.
  176. Love the feel and fit, wish they lasted more than a year

    Rating

I previously reviewed these right after I bought them last January and gave a great review. Having worn them a bit I have to address a concern of mine. I do not wear shoes all summer so I have been wearing these for perhaps six months at most and they are falling apart. I am gluing the upper back to the sole on the heel on both sides as well as now finding gaping holes where stitching is coming loose in the front. I realize that minimalist shoes are going to wear faster than others but it is frustrating for an expensive shoe to barely last a year when I'm not even wearing it half the time. And I do not run in these. I do some hiking but that is about it. I love how they feel and fit but the last pair of my softstars has worn out so quickly that I am wary of buying another pair.

He's tried quite a lot of barefoot style shoes, including Vivo (like) and Vibram Five Fingers (like a lot), but he wanted something leather and with fewer plasticy bits that would break down. He has destroyed all this other running shoes. We'll see how these hold up, but I'm pretty sure that we'll buy another pair.
  178. I've been looking for a pair of shoes like this for years!

    Rating

These shoes are shaped perfectly - they're widest at the toe point and narrowest at the heel, the way a human foot should be shaped! They look a little goofy, but they feel great. I've worn them to work every day for the past 3 months, and the only negative I've experienced is that the sole is starting to peel away from the rest of the shoe. The construction is excellent otherwise. Before buying these shoes, know that the leather naturally stretches a little - I wish I had sized down.

The only shoes that I will wear

    Rating

The title seems like an exaggeration, but from the day I bought it, I have yet to wear my nike mnds. The first few days of me wearing this to work took some adjustments as I have never worn minimalist shoes in my life. But after that I just enjoyed how comfortable the shoes wraps around my feet. Since then I have worn it to work daily 12 hour each day. My feet do not ache anymore thanks to the feet space. I just don't know how to describe this shoes, but I definitely won't be changing this shoes for any other brand for a very long time.
  180. All the other barefoot and minimalist companies should be learning from their example.

    Rating

Thank god for these shoes and thank god for the elves at Softstar who listened to the customers and delivered accordingly. All the other barefoot and minimalist companies should be learning from their example. With the properly wide toe-box and the fantastically thin and flexible but strong 2mm sole, these are simply the only barefoot shoes I've tried that feel like they really work as they should. The only reason I'm not giving them the full five stars is because there's always room for improvement (more later). I first got into barefoot shoes about five years ago and initially, for me, it was all about the wider toe box. In my mid-40s I'd started developing what felt like chronic pains in my feet. Paying attention to how my feet felt, I realised for the first time that my pinky toes were being pinched by my footwear, which at the time was mainly a pair of Pumas I'd thought of as good, practical, comfortable shoes. Looking for something wider, I initially went to the Birkenstock shop on Neal St. In London. But I didn't like the feel of the hard, sculpted sole, so I went next door to the Vivobarefoot shop where a very nice sales assistant spent 45 minutes patiently explaining the benefits of barefoot, and addressing my doubts about wearing thin-soled shoes on city streets. Not knowing any better, I bought a pair and have mostly been wearing Vivos ever since. But, wide though they were, for me they weren't quite wide enough and, I realise now, the sole is not nearly as soft or flexible enough either. Now that I've belatedly started branching out, I've tried Xero Shoes Ipari Hanas and Tadeevos. The latter have a very comfortable sole, but neither of these shoes has anything like a wide enough toe box. They're almost no better than ordinary shoes. They have duly been sent back. I realise I probably have wider feet than some, but I'd have thought even with narrower feet that don't feel squeezed in these other shoes when at rest, it's not really going to be possible to fully splay the toes while walking or running. I think there's a lack of courage here on the part of the companies – and this very much applies to the Vivobarefoots too, especially their running shoes – about making a shoe that's really wide enough because people will find it weird looking. Personally, I'll take 'weird', comfortable and healthy over normal and painful every day. The whole thing is like a perfect concrete embodiment of how conventionalism can actually hurt. And in fact, once you're wearing them, the Primal Runamocs (mine are a discrete black) look fine anyway. So, again, I say, thank god for the Primal Runamocs because without them, I don't know what I'd do. These are simply the first shoes I've ever had that haven't hurt my feet and, beyond that, they're a pleasure to walk in and more than any other shoes I've ever had, they also make me feel like running. With my weakened toes and a slight, mercifully painless bunion on my right foot, I've had some remedial work to do before I really get into that. I'm wearing Correct Toes toe spacers and doing foot and toe exercises found on YouTube and even trying some foot taping, all of which help and feel great. But it's only really with these shoes that I've finally been able to feel the ground sufficiently to figure out a comfortable, natural footfall. When it comes together, it's not just not painful, it's bliss; you feel your breathing change and your belly relax and walking becomes something genuinely soothing. A note on the incredible Vibrams sole: by pure weird chance, on like the second day of wearing these, I did that thing people are always worrying about with barefoot shoes, and which almost never happens: I stepped on a big piece of broken glass. It lodged in the sole without making even a tiny hole and I pulled it out. Minutes later, on a roll with this, I stepped on a strange sort of metal spike thing attached to a plastic lid and sticking straight up. This could have really done some damage if it had gone through, but again, absolutely no puncture. To earn that extra star, elves, it'd be great if you could bring out a more breathable version in some kind of machine-washable material. I'm mostly wearing them in mild-to-cold weather and not going running yet, so the lack of breathability's fine, but can't really see how this would work as a running shoe, especially in the warm – and I haven't really got anything else I can use as a running shoe. Even as it is, I've had to slightly mitigate the glorious thinness of the sole by putting in an odour-eating insole. It would be especially fantastic if you could do a cheaper version in canvas, the barefoot version of an espadrille or a cheap plimsoll. Now that would be ultra-ultra-minimalist.
  181. You have to try them to believe them

    Rating

I was skeptical that these shoes would be wide enough for me w/out an actual wide size, but they are. I bought them at the end of July and it's early Oct and I have worn them nearly every day. I never would rather wear anything else. (I feel sorry for my most recent pair of Ramblers which were my lifetime favorite pair of shoes before that.) I wear the Primals with CorrectToes and no sox. Now it's getting chilly and I tried them with sox which did not really work, the size I have is too small. So I just ordered a winter pair one size larger. I plan to wear them with wool hiking sox and my CorrectToes. I get a lot of compliments on these Primals, surprisingly. People constantly say how comfortable they look, and sometimes even that they are cute. I made them in really bright colors, kiwi and fuschia and azure, I figure as long as I'm wearing weird shoes I'll just flaunt them, and overall that seems to work for me. :-)
  182. Even with no socks on these shoes are perfect, nothing rubs.

    Rating

These shoes are made with comfort in mind! The details are amazing. The inside of the back heel has a small piece of neoprene fabric that helps the shoe grip your foot and keeps it from rubbing. The tongue is also lightly lined and is very smooth. Even with no socks on these shoes are perfect, nothing rubs. I ordered mine in a custom color with the thicker trail sole. The sole is grippy (sp?) but not overly aggressive. I love the bike tube toe which keeps the soft leather from being destroyed. All that being said. . . the fit is a bit tricky. My regular, athletic shoe size is mens 9.5, I have feet on the wide size and so I initially ordered the regular width. Even though it was obviously very wide, I figured it would be comfortable. However I found the "regular" width in this shoe with its VERY WIDE toe box, to be too wide. I am sure there are a number of reasons for this. Although I have worn "barefoot" or very minimal sole shoes for years, this is my first foray into natural toe splay shoes. So it may just be that my feet are more conditioned to mainstream shoe fit. Softstar was very kind and returned my first pair of shoes with no effort at all. (Thank you!) For my second attempt I ordered The Primal shoes in size 9u narrow. When they arrived I was a little concerned because the heel is noticeably narrower than the softstar Merry jane shoes that I already own. The ball and toe of the Primal shoes in narrow is the same width as my Merry Janes in wide. At first try on I was unsure as my big toe was right up against the edge of the shoe, but after wearing for only 20 minutes they fit perfectly! These shoes are awesome! 9u narrow in this shoe fits better than my standard mens 9.5 regular barefoot shoes from merrell. The duck foot look may not be for everyone, but I am a known dork so it doesn't bother me. Thank you softstar for another great pair of shoes!
  183. Good shoes, bad soles

    Rating

These shoes are very comfortable with naturally wide toe box, thin soles, and no toe spring, or heel rise. This promotes a healthier gate on your forefoot that allows your arch and calf to absorb much of the impact of walking or running and allows room for your toes to spread as wide as if you had never worn shoes. In short they are the best shoes I've worn to date. However, the trail soles wore to the point of losing all tread under the ball of my foot in 2-3 weeks and I'm going to need to get them resoled before I wear a hole through them. For such a minimal shoe at $140 dollars I would expect them to use a decent rubber for the sole but whatever they've chosen seems to be some sort of neoprene. I've worn thin soled shoes before and never before have I had such rapid wear. I cannot speak towards the street sole. I also should not that the heel counter feels low at first but after wearing them a bit it feels natural and as they flex so easily there's no worry of it sliding off.
  184. Best natural shoes.

    Rating

I wore the RunAmoc Dash 3 years ago and complained of how the tapered shape would squeeze my toes together while walking, causing big toe pain. Looks like the Elves listened to my feedback and finally made the same awesome shoe with a very wide naturally shaped toe space. I can now enjoy going hiking more again, as this is my favorite shoe for walking on dirt trails and gravel. They do look a bit funny though, and I'm sure I'll be asked why I'm wearing clown shoes. But function over form, and this is exactly what I asked for.

For those of you who complain that these are too wide, or look like clown shoes, I would ask you to walk a mile in my feet. My feet are actually shaped like these shoes, and just as wide. Yes, I have “ clown feet,” “duck feet,” whatever you want to call them. And I have never had a pair of ready-made shoes fit me before. My whole life has been a search for shoes that don’t hurt. So you can enjoy all the other Softstar models, and all the other great-looking minimalist shoes out there, which I couldn’t wear without amputating one or two toes per foot — and I will enjoy my Primal Runamocs, which fit me like perfect, soft gloves. Anyone who thinks they look funny is welcome to his or her opinion — but I think the smile on my face is more important than the style of my shoes. And anyway, this shape is what nature intended for our feet. Free Your Toes!
  186. EE width feet

    Rating

My feet are approximately a size women's 7 1/2 EE (measured at a shoe store), but they are wide at the front, average at the heel, and less tapered along the toes than average, so almost nothing fits. I got the Primals in 7U regular. They have ample room for my toes, but were too narrow at the ball of my feet, and it seemed my heels were overlapping the sole slightly. I gave them a chance anyway, and quickly realized the heels were not causing any problems. They continued to pinch at the ball, though (even without socks), and for several weeks I only wore them for an hour or two at a time. As they broke in I was able to wear them for longer, and eventually (with repeatedly getting wet) the leather stretched out and stopped feeling tight (they are now a bit loose without socks). I do wish the design was more fitted or gathered at the ankle, because I constantly get little rocks and other debris in the shoes.
  187. beyond comfortable!

    Rating

[Disclaimer: this review describes the previous generation of Primal RunAmoc, purchased January 2018] I cannot say enough good things about Softstar's Primal RunAmoc. Despite the extremely roomy toe box they are perfectly snug around the heel and arch. When I walk I often experience the peculiar sensation of my toes "grabbing" the ground beneath my feet, almost as if I were walking on a second pair of hands. At first this took getting used to, and I experienced some mild muscle soreness the first 2-3 weeks. But once my feet and calves grew accustomed to the changes in sensation, in balance, and in posture, my whole body has responded in positive ways. I tire less easily and am able to walk longer distances. I've even experienced a reduction in hip pain that has troubled me the last few years. In short, these shoes are not just comfortable; for me they have been positively healing and restorative! A word about sizes: I typically wear a US men's 8-1/2. My feet have a narrow heel and wide ball. I bought the softstar size 9 (normal width), which fits perfectly when I wear thick socks--usual practice since my feet have always chilled easily. However, if I were to wear thinner socks the Softstar 9 would probably be a little big on me. The next time I buy a pair it will probably be a Softstar 8; this would give me a summer pair (8) and a winter pair (9).

    Best shoes I've ever owned

    Rating

I got these shoes (2mm vibram soles) for running and general use and so far they've been amazing. I have wide feet, and there is plenty of room to move my toes. At a first it might seem like there's too much excess space for your 3rd and 4th toes, but those toes actually move forward more when you're on the ball of your foot so I think it's actually just right. I am right in between sizes (mens 9 and mens 10), and realistically I am probably just into the 10 range. Still I ordered mens 9 after consulting the elves since my intended use includes them getting wet from time to time which can cause them to stretch (they haven't so far). I'm glad I ordered down, they are so light and nonrestrictive that they form your feet and it'd be hard to go too small with all the toe space. I also got Nikwax to waterproof them, which has seemed to work well. I've gone on runs in wet and even slushy conditions and so far my feet have stayed dry. I also love the upcycled bike tubes on the front! The tube has a unique pattern on each shoe which give it some character. The price is not cheap but it's worth every penny. I'll definitely be coming back for another pair when these wear out.

When I put these on the first time, I heard angels singing, giraffes barking, dogs singing like babyface. My grandfather got off his chair and started moonwalking, which transitioned into bboying. It's been a few weeks now and I'm just plain grateful to the elves at softstar for being bold enough to make a shoe that truly accommodates the natural foot. I've been through every single brand of minimalist shoe that you can think of, and this is the only one that is wide enough for me( i have been minimalist for almost a decade now). Thank you guys, and please don't ever stop making these!
  190. The most amazing fit... until the stretched.

    Rating

Really loved the fit of the shoes and the look. Garnered a lot of interest from others in my town. Unfortunately they stretched the first time a took them out onto a damp trail. It is rather unfortunate because both the build quality and the initial fit of the shoe are like nothing else I have seen or felt before. Hoping this issue might be resolved in later iterations of this shoe as now no other shoe feels the same as when I first put these Primal RunAmocs on. Unfortunately they are just not suited for where I am here in the "wet" coast British Columbia. I will try to mod the shoes and add a laceup at the back to get a semblance of the foot feel back. Good luck Softstar with continually perfecting these shoes, the world needs a shoe with this wide of toe box and a wide flat sole! As far as I know you are the only company truly brave enough to push that norm (and to do it in style!).
  191. Perfect shoes for wide feet

    Rating

I have never found shoes that fit my feet in width, ever. My previous shoes were the wide Softstar chukkas, and even those pinched my pinky toes on the sides. The primals are by far the greatest shoes I have ever bought and will buy another pair once these wear out. I hope that Softstar will incorporate the sole shape for other shoes: dressier shoes, winter shoes, etc. If they do, they have a guaranteed customer.
  192. Love them

    Rating

I have very wide feet (for other softstar shoes I would basically need a size 13 width and size 10 length to give an idea). I've tried to find a shoe that fits my feet for years with very limited success. When I saw the announcement for this shoe I ordered a pair immediately and was not disappointed. Overall I'm extremely happy with them and my feet love them. I generally wear them everyday to work and they are comfortable for the entire day. Only minor complaint is that the heel is little tight on my feet and I can feel the seams (maybe I have wide heels?), but definitely not a deal breaker. The quality is also excellent. I look forward to a leather soled version with great anticipation (which I was told should be coming in spring 2018 ). A thinner rubber sole would be a nice option, too. Highly recommend to anyone especially if you have wide feet. I hope more shoes like this are added to the lineup. Also, I must mention that Soft Star customer service is top notch and they have always answered my questions and worked tirelessly to find a shoe that fit well prior to these being released (custom sizing was the only option). Thank you, and thanks for this great shoe!
  193. No complaints

    Rating

I am happy with these shoes and I walk for miles in them comfortably. My only wish is for softstar to start making them in custom colors. I usually need to order a size bigger with softstar shoes in addition to wide to make sure that I have enough room for my toes to be comfortable, but not with these. I ordered my regular size (one size larger than the sizing guide recommends is normal for me) and had to send them back for a smaller size for once because the toe box of this shoe is actually made for human feet. Joy :)
  194. Excellent

Got these for myself first and they were just too wide, physically and looked a bit too much like duck feet. Got them for my husband who can never find wide enough shoes and he loves them. He wears them constantly. My male co worker has some also and he loves them so much he doesn’t care if they are a continuous topic of conversation because they are so comfortable. They do draw attention, but they are an excellent product if your foot is wide enough to fill out the toe box. I got the regular run run RunAmocs for a toebox that fits my foot better.

    Rating

I love these and would wear them exclusively. I waterproofed mine with nikwax and they're fine here in Utah snow and mud, but it's not the Seattle area wetness by a long shot. They're not warm enough for serious snow, but I'm hoping to get a pair of your boots sometime soon.
  196. Trail-tested and Hiker-Approved!

    Rating

Updating my review from 12/13, adding more praise. I initially purchased these for office/casual wear, and love them for that purpose. (Sure, I look like Sideshow Bob because my feet are rather large, but I actually find these shoes cute and my feet are happy.) Then I decided to try these on the trail. Having mostly worn hiking boots in the past, I was surprised to find the Primals to be a great hiking shoe, too. The trail I usually hike has some rocky sections, and the sole provides quite decent protection (I would not want anything thinner). I am always kicking or tripping over rocks, so the rubber toe cap has been a great feature, too. All around, a fabulous shoe. Way to go, Elves!

I purchased my first pair of Adult Primal RunAmoc shoes and they’re amazing. This is exactly how a shoe should feel and look. Think about it are feet are shaped the way the shoe looks. I love my new shoes and will now always purchase shoes from SoftStar! The quality of the leather, the lightness of them and letting the foot to splay out allowing for better circulation I’d say forget what the masses on what a shoe should look like. The elves have done an amazing job and I’m proud to own. One other note when wearing the shoes forget walking on side walks or asphalt but defiantly walk on the earth and feel the ground and it’s amazing!

I've only worn Xero shoe huaraches for the last two years and then a pair of Altras if I _need_ to wear shoes. However I never liked the massive Altra cushioning and the toe boxes weren't _that_ wide for someone used to sandals. In so far as my ability to splay my toes, the primals are like if I took the huaraches and just covered them. The perfect shoe. Finally something elegant I can wear to occasions where sandals or sneakers would be inappropriate. Please incorporate the sole shape into more offerings!
  199. Best shoes ever.

    Rating

So I’ll just start by saying that these shoes are the best things I’ve ever had on my feet. I have a 14-15 size...extremely wide feet that “friends” have called paddles. I’ve obviously have problems with footwear my whole life. Wearing regular shoes for the majority of my life cramped my toes and led to pain and misshapen (triangle) toe shape. I got to the point where I could find no shoes that I could wear without pain, much less run/hike in for extended times. About a year and a half ago, I started wearing the largest minimalist shoes I could find. Even though these shoes were still restrictive to my toe splay, a lot of my foot problems started improving. My foot strength had increased more than I ever thought was possible. I was able to find a pair of minimalist trail runners that I wore out during this process. Even though those shoes didn’t fit me properly, i need another pair, and those shoes (another brand) were discontinued. I tried a couple of other of the biggest widest shoes I could find, but returned them immediately. I found Softstar by searching for something I didn’t think existed, a company that made shoes that they care about and understood that feet are different. It just so happened that the Primal RunAmocs had just been released and the first time I saw/read about them, they gave me hope. The price point seemed high to me, but then I realized that a shoe that may actually fit my foot would be worth it. I emailed the Elves servers times with questions about sizing (length and width) and we determined that a size 14 would likely be the best size. I contemplated waiting until the wise version of these shoes were released, but the Elves thought these may work out fine. They were more than right. These shoes are the absolute best shoes I’ve owned. When they arrived, yes they looked a bit strange, but as soon as I put them on, I understood . The fit was great and for the first time EVER my toes actually had room...ever. Sure some people have a reaction to the shoe when they see it for the first time, but I can tell you that it gets them thinking about why they keep their feet cramped up. My family/coworkers got used to them fast as I rarely take them off unless I’m barefoot etc. I run on trails in these and love it. It’s amazing that the shoe has shaped to my foot and allows my foot to be in the shape it was meant to be. They are like a part of my foot. I’ve had these shoes for about 2 months now and am more than pleased with the construction. The soft leather is amazing and the leather footbed is great. I typically wear socks in them but have worn them sock free with no issues. The soles are great and I have had plenty of grip. Even though worn the soles down some in the forefoot area the most, then the heel and side, I’m pretty sure I can get several more months out of the soles. Once the soles wear out, I plan to see if the Elves can replace (which I don’t think they do) or if a local cobbler can put new soles on. If not, I’ll be buying a new pair, no question. I sincerely hope that Softstar doesn’t stop making this Primal RunAmoc design. Please, please, please, don’t take away the width of the toe box., and please don’t take away the large sizes. I’m not saying these shoes changed my entire life, just the quality of it. Thanks again- Don
  200. Good, but not great

    Rating

I've owned most of the minimalist shoes. I've yet to find a perfect pair, maybe I'm just picky. I was looking for a shoe that I could wear to work every day in the wet Seattle winters (2.x mile walk both ways), around the office, hiking, and (ideally) running. These weren't a great option. 1. On my second wearing I ended up hiking through quite a bit of mud and water, these stretched a full size when getting properly drenched, then took an amazing amount of time to dry out. This was the deal breaker. I needed something that I could wear anywhere. They no longer fit and are in the giveaway bin. Worn 3-4x. 2. Running: not great. Like most minimalist shoes, they 'clop'—that slapping sound when they hit the trail. Fivefingers don't do this, they seem to be the exception. Somewhere on this site Softstar talks about shoes that can do the Leadville 100. I can say that these are definitely not tough enough to do that race—not by a longshot. 3. Around the office: until they resized, these were fantastic (that one awesome day). My boss wears a pair on dry days and he loves them (but he has another pair for rainy days). They have a GREAT minimal feel. I just don't feel like they're very durable or good for what I wanted.

    Response from store

Thanks for your review Perry and sorry they did not work out for you. Please be assured these shoes have most definitely done the Leadville 100 and other ultras. Softstar sizing can be confusing, but I wear 7U in Portlander (so sad they are no longer made), rogue and moc3. Softstar advised me to try the primal runamoc in 6U, but sadly the length was too small. Also, the heel was not constructed the was it is on the portlander (too soft) and it should be more structured like the Portlander.
  202. Supremely comfortable

    Rating

I thought Rogues and Chukkas were comfortable.....but now they lounge in my closet, as I daily choose these amazing Primals. My previous Softstar shoes needed to be slightly too long, in order for my upturning toes to be comfortable in the shallow toe box. The extra width in the Primal somehow gives me more toe room in a vertical sense - and I also suspect the cool bicycle-tube toe cap helps to hide the bump from those rising toes. The ability to have a tight fit in the ankle and loose in the toe is delightful (my Rogues are very comfy, but I slip around in them). I hope to see more styles adapted to this new design, especially the Merry Jane, as I would love to be able to wear that one. All in all, excellent work Elves......
  203. Shoe doesn't fit well in the heel...

    Rating

I love RunAmocs and have run in RunAmocs, but this new shoe (my 4th purchase!) dedicated to running seems a step backwards! The heel is loose and slides around unless I really cinch them up. And the upper doesn't seem to breathe very well- I personally much prefer the perforated uppers that made my love RunAmocs for the last few years. I was hesitant to buy them because they did not come in the 3 mm sole thickness that I know and love, but the truth is, the thicker sole (while offering me no advantage) feels fine when I run, and might even have advantages on a rocky trail.

These are my first pair of Softstars, and won't be my last. After decades in constricting footwear, I finally noticed a couple of months ago that my feet are shaped like shoes. I have since been obsessed with correcting or at least halting the progression of deformity. I started wearing Correct Toes, first in Croc Bistros (not at all minimalist, but they are zero drop and seem to be the widest Crocs). Also got a pair of Lems Primal 2, which are minimalist and provide great toe room. When my Sofststar Primals arrived, I fell in love. Absolutely amazing toe freedom, and ridiculously soft leather. It's like being barefoot. I feel silly gushing like this over a pair of shoes, but they really are that awesome. Thank you, Elves! P.S. Now I am really spoiled, and hoping you will start making the Phoenix boot in this width.

I decided to order the gray version of these new shoes. I have extremely wide feet including a high instep and a sensitive bunion. I could not believe that a regular width would fit me, but the Elves said I should try them and see. They almost worked. Honestly if I had liked the color, I might have kept them to see if the fit would work out. But the gray was just too dull for me. I'm going to wait for a DYO version in wide next spring and try again.

    Rating

Love that my toes are not crowded, and that my feet can traipse lightly across carpet, tile, grass and pavement! The flexible sole allows my foot to step naturally. The upcycled toe cap is somewhat bothersome. There is a bump where it's fastened to the leather that irritates some of my toes. I hope a re-design will eliminate that toe cap.
  207. I wish all shoes had an ergonomic foot shape like the Primal

    Rating

I think it takes getting used to from an appearance standpoint because practically every other shoe in the world is pointed. Considering most people are not riding horses in them, there is no reason to constrain the feet. The shape and width is perfect for me and represents how the foot should naturally be shaped. They are definitely not too wide in my opinion, I really would love to see ALL shoes available in this shape, I believe it would result in a lot more healthy feet!

I've had these for a few weeks now. Very comfortable, great to run in and I like the colour scheme. Most comments I've received from others are about the toe box. It's so wide, they look funny. Other reviewers say clown boots, I say duck feet. I was worried it may be a trip hazard but no instances yet. Despite the weird look, my toes do want to stretch to fill them out!
  209. SO AWESOME FOR OUTDOOR EXERCISE

    Rating

I have had the regular RunAmoc but there was a little pressure on my big to pushing it inward. But with these I can do yoga outside and feel like my foot is really like it's barefoot but cozy in wet winter weather. Only downside is it's a little funky looking. But the "normal" looking shoes are all pointy and causing the same inward pressure on the big toe. THANKS for the new design. I think the black is best looking.
  210. wrong size, but decided against them

    Rating

due to an error on my part, the Primals I ordered were 4 sizes too large. But after seeing them, I decided not to reorder in my size, but to order Original Run-Amoks while they were still available. The toe box of the Primals was just too wide, and too flat. My big toes especially tends to wear holes in my socks, and shoes that don't have enough height in the toe box can press down and be uncomfortable or even painful, so I decided against investing in the Primals.

This is the shoe we've all been waiting for.

    Rating

Love them. I have many, many pairs of Softstar shoes, and I was going to hold off purchasing these until a current pair wore out. I couldn't wait, and I'm glad I didn't. What's great about these: super-wide toe box is just what my toes needed (and now I don't need to order wide which makes the body of the shoe too big); rubber at front makes shoes less likely to leak in the rain; padded tongue is much more comfortable; shoe laces tighter around ankle which means less stuff gets inside and fit is better; and laces are longer and easier to tie. I love these shoes. I wear them every day. I used to think I liked the thin 2mm sole better for ground feel, but really the 5mm is more versatile. I wouldn't mind seeing other styles with this wide toe box, especially the Phoenix boot. Only down side, if you care (I don't): The shoes look a little clown-like with the wide toe box.

    Toe Room!

    Rating

I am an airline pilot and elite triathlete. I have five pairs of Soft Star shoes because they are healthy for my feet and overall fitness and function. The new PRIMAL RunAmoc are as close to barefoot footwear available and my new work shoes. They are USA made and I will buy more when needed to replace other shoes. There is “room” for tweaking this design but I’ll take excess space for my toes over ANY any cramping of toe box size. THANK YOU Softstar!!
  213. Finally, shoes that fit my feet!

    Rating

I love how these shoes are wide enough for my toes, but narrow enough for my heels. My feet are shaped like feet, not shoes! I've gotten tons of positive attention for them, though I do think they look a little clown-like from the top. From the sides and front though they are super-cute. Things I would change: I'd shave about 1/4" off the upper, inner edge of the big toe area. I don't mind the width but the way that portion sticks out is what makes them look clowny. I'd also love to have more sole thickness options and the option of a sheepskin liner. I find the soles just thick enough for city walking, but not great for hours and hours of it. Otherwise, I love these shoes and I'm so glad to have a shoe I can wear when it's too cold for sandals.
  214. Fantastik & worth the wait!

    Rating

I have been awaiting these shoes for 3+ years now. These are the ONLY shoe that fits my feet! That they are light, comfortable, and look good are just icing on the cake!!!!! As an added bonus, I can stop purchasing shoes 2-3 sizes too large and in men's sizes to just try to get something to work out for me. Thank you Softstar Elves.
  215. Great shoes for people with a really wide toe box

    Rating

Please note, if you have a small toe box and your toes do not have a substantial spread, don't buy these. Get their normal RunAmoc. Softstar specifically made these shoes for wide spreading feet. You can tell from the pictures that the toe box is extremely wide ;) I have been keeping an eye on softstar for a while, ever since I spoke to them over a year ago and they mentioned that they had a design in the works for wide feet. I have a massive big toe and exceptionally wide feet. The only pair of shoes that I've been able to comfortably wear have been my New Balance MT00. I've had to use these everywhere since most other shoes crush my toes. These Primal RunAmoc 's are great. The leather is very flexible and soft. You would think, at first glance, that the shoes would prohibit your toe spread, but since the leather is so soft and flexible, I barely even notice the shoe is on. The handwork is great and though I almost wish I could have a 2mm sole to feel more of the ground, though these 5mm are nice. If i had to nitpick something, it would be the inner leather heal support. The padding on the heel is a bit low and while it does not cause me any pain, it feels a little awkward. I do have high heel bones though. I wouldn't mind the heel padding going a bit higher, but maybe this was a design decision that I don't understand. I do have to say that the sole on the New Balance MToo is still my favorite sole. I wish Vibram would continue making those kind of soles because it is extremely flexible, but also extremely comfy and padded. I wish I could take that Mtoo soul and put it on these. I don't run, just walk ;) I did not buy the sheepskin insert, but if I had to be standing for long periods of time, I might consider that. The leather sole is nice, but it is firm and might possibly cause fatigue if you're standing at work a lot. Aside from those few nitpicks, I love them. If you have ultra-wide toe-boxes and are looking for a minimalist shoe, I would highly advise buying a pair of these.
  216. Super Shoes

Who would have thought that a shoe shaped like a foot would be so comfortable? Got these just in time to hike Pinnacles National Park and they were fantastic. Please please please make a Hawthorn Chukka with this toe box!
  217. Ridiculous and amazing

    Rating

The longer I've worn minimalist shoes, the wider my feet have become, until even the wide width Dash were to narrow for me. In the Primals I have room for my feet, my Correct Toes, and even socks. They look pretty silly, but I know that's only because we're so used to shoes that warp and mangle our feet. I'm happy to help normalize funny-looking, foot-shaped shoes. :) I just wish I could buy winter boots in this weird and wonderful shape!
  218. A good start

    Rating

I've been wearing soft star shoes for many years but hadn't found a great trail running shoe/cross training shoe. This is the closest. Although the toe box is ridiculously wide, making them aesthically absurd, they have not tripped me up yet after three 5+ mile runs, double unders, burpees, and moderate height jumping. I truly appreciate the ability for my toes to move unfettered but the extra space in the toe box worries me when it comes to high agility movements. With some refinement, and perhaps different sizing for men and women, this shoe could be perfect.
  219. Growing pains

    Rating

I'd been waiting for these for a long time, and now having had them for a couple weeks, they mostly deliver, albeit with some issues that I'd love to see addressed. First, as others have mentioned, the toe box is wide. VERY wide. I have wide feet and appreciate the width, but I think it could be reduced a bit to improve the aesthetic without compromising on the purpose of the shoe. Second, while the toe box is wide, the midfoot and heel are both narrow by comparison, so unless you have clown-shaped feet, if you actually need all that toebox width then your heel/midfoot may bulge out over the sole. This wouldn't be a problem if not for the way these shoes are sewn together; there are some seams inside that could be addressed to at least make the transition from sole to sidewall less substantial. The tongue liner is amazing, though mine is permanently bunched up inside creating a ridge down the centre that is annoying bordering on painful on longer runs. They are very well made, and I think with a few tweaks they'll become my new go-to (at least until the moc3 is released in a wide).
  220. aWidest toe box ever

    Rating

I run barefoot and have been wearing only barefoot type shoes for 6 years, including Soft Star. I have 2 pairs of moccasins and love them. I tried these because of the wide toe box. They are very soft and comfortable right away. I think they are a half size too big. The 10 women fits me in the moccasin but the 10 in the Primal is a bit too long. It seems that because the toe box is so wide, I don’t need a tiny bit of length. I really like these but wish I had ordered a 9.5.
  221. Your toes will thank you!

    Rating

Preview: I have long anticipated these. I have wide toe splay, high arches, low foot volume and no descent in toe slope what-so-ever. (not counting the pinky toes) Sizing up has been mandatory for years, all because my 4th toe on each foot doesn't fit on the sole. And when I broke one of these toes, shoes became impossible to wear. That's when I found the Dash with bullhide sole. I wear them exclusively, rotating among 3 pairs. Primal Review: Some people's feet are shaped outside the box! They will suffer from commercially shaped soles, or they will go barefoot. This shoe works and for that, "everything is AWESOME". I could go on and on. I do have a few particulars to address: 1) too many eyelets? 2) I don't care for a tongue liner. 3) on the dash, there is a small strip of leather on the inside of the upper heel that gives a little structure. I would like this on the Primal. In summary, I would like to see the Dash MARRY the Primal and have a hybrid! Dash upper + primal sole = perfect shoe note: I bought this pair for my son. too big....returned. I will order another pair for him soon. I will likely order a pair for myself too, but today, I'm ordering another pair of Dash, sized up. Thank you Doctor Elves! You do more for feet than most Podiatrists! Sincerely, Angela E.
  222. Get these!

    Rating

Usual Softstar quality. However, the primal toe box is completely awesome! It it the most anatomically correct toe box of all the minimalist show brands I wear; and, I wear alot of different brands. I normally have to size up in Softstars so my toes don't have to get squeezed together. But, that leaves the shoe long and causes some occasional catching. These I can size normally and have happy feet! I hope the Elves decide to bring this toe box to all models or allow customization to this model.
  223. Narrow Toe is muy bueno

    Rating

Toe no bueno (Original review - 3 stars) You can't tell from the pictures, but the toe is extremely wide - which is meant to allow the toes to splay, but greatly diminishes the aesthetic appeal of the shoe when viewed from the front. Judging by the substantial amount of room I have in the toe, I think the toe could stand to be brought in without compromising toe splay while simultaneously restoring the aesthetic. For reference, I have regular-width feet. I plan on giving the narrow version a try in spring of 2018 when they become available, as it is in all other aspects a very nice shoe. 3/30/18 update to my review from 11/8/17 (please add - now 5 stars) I gave the narrow version a try as planned and couldn’t be happier. In truth the shoes still look a little /different/ when viewed from the front, but with the narrow version it is an “acceptable” amount of different. After wearing them for a day I slipped on my old shoes for comparison - shoes which up until this point I was very happy with - and my feet were like Nah dude we wear Softstar’s now. Great shoe (and with the 2mm sole, a fantastic shoe for deadlifting).
  224. Most comfortable Softstars yet!

    Rating

Ok, these are ugly. Really ugly. My son calls them "cartoon shoes". If you have tried Lems shoes, these are even wider at the toe. That said, the fit is phenomenal. Snug and secure at the heel, yet plenty of room at the toe. Thanks, elves!
  225. ruined me for other shoes!

    Rating

These shoes have ruined me for other shoes! It's like they were made for my feet. The material is super comfy and the wide (extra wide!) toes box allows my toes to spread and create more stability with each step. It's hard to go back to a 'regular' shoe after this. Time to clean out the closet. ;)

    Finally, a shoe that fits.

    Rating

TL;DR - Super wide feet? No problem. These shoes are the only shoes I have ever owned that fit my feet, and the quality and craftsmanship is second to none. Background: I have an extremely wide foot. My toes are the widest part of my foot, and I'm also more or less flat footed. Having to buy shoes has always been an issue. The most common commentary was "He's better suited to wearing the box than the shoe". I visited a big brand name shoe company and had them order me a 6E width in a half size too large, and it still didn't fit. I've been limited to buying shoes 2 sizes too large just to keep things from being painful. Verdict: Primal changed everything. I was nervous about getting my actual size. I shouldn't have been. I think I have less toe room than most will have, but for the first time in my life, I have shoes that fit. As an added bonus, these are the highest quality shoes I have ever owned. The leather is superb and needed no break in. The day after they arrived, I spent 12 hours on my feet the in mixed terrain. I was in awe by the end of the day. I couldn't believe I wasn't itching to take off my shoes. I can't give any higher praise to a pair of shoes than to say I actually love wearing them. Note from the Elves: Awwwwhhh!! That is terrific Chris - thanks for sharing! We are planning on adding Wide" and "Narrow" widths next year.
  227. Way too wide on my feet.

    Rating

I am a huge fan of Softstar shoes and nearly every pair of shoes I own are Softstars so I was excited to try these. Unfortunately, they were so wide on my feet they looked very odd. Maybe they would work better for men's feet but they really did not work for my smaller women's frame. I had to exchange them for the Dash style.
  228. Super Comfortable - Definitely get these!

    Rating

These fit great and are super comfortable immediately. I like the materials they are made out of and how they feel on my feet. Best Softstars yet!
  229. Room to spread your toes, yet pleasingly secure

    Rating

Secure from the heel through the midfoot, and then fanning out generously for the forefoot and toes, these shoes fit astonishingly well. I hadn't anticipated this, but the flexible leather top means that the toe area can be wide without leaving one's toes adrift as they would be in the empty vertical space of a more rigidly shaped wide toe box (e.g., Lems). The flexible leather sits directly on top of your forefoot and toes, sort of holding your forefoot in place against the sole. So, even though you've got plenty of sideways room for your toes to spread, the overall fit remains securely sock-like as with other RunAmocs (or, if you're not familiar, similar to FiveFingers). When you raise your toes, the sole flexes upward with them.

Customer Questions

The fit of the Dash RunAmoc is usually true to one's normal Softstar size. For the Primal RunAmoc, however, we advise most people to size up one from their normal Softstar size. For example, if you wear a 7U Dash RunAmoc, you are likely to want to size up to 8U for the Primal RunAmoc. This is because of variations in how the uppers are designed. Subtle differences in an individual’s foot shape can also change how a shoe feels. Rest assured that we offer an easy return/exchange process if needed.

No. The heels of Primal shoes are the same size and width as the standard heel of our other shoes.

Sorry, but no. The unique Primal toe cap is only available on Primal RunAmocs.

Both wide and regular widths of the Primal sole keep the toe box as the widest part of the shoe. The regular width is reduced most along the toe box, slightly less at the middle/instep portion of the shoe and has no change around the heel.

When to Order Wide Width
If you normally wear wide shoes, have a large midfoot/instep or have ordered wide Softstar shoes in the past simply because you wanted more room for toes to spread, then the wide Primal width will likely work very well for you. Wide width is also recommended if your feet are widest at the toes, or if you have been wearing Correct Toes or other toe spacers to restore a natural foot shape.

When to Order Regular Width
If you have a slim midfoot/instep then you may prefer the regular width. Regular width is also recommended for people who do not need the full amount of space in the toe box. For example, if you are new to minimalist shoes and have been wearing tapered/pointy shoes most of your life then your toes likely point inward and you may find the full amount of space from the wide width to be excessive, especially at first. We find this to be the case with most of our female customers, due to the conventional tapered shape of most women's shoes.

Very likely! Our shoe designers are tinkering with new ideas for the Primal sole. At this time it is available for the following shoes:

These are listed on the Primal category page.

Not at this time, but we may offer this option in the future.

Use our Sole Shape Comparison Tool to visualize how the Regular vs. Wide widths differ between many of our adult styles including the Dash, Hawthorne, Merry Jane, Oxford, Phoenix, Solstice, Switchback, Primal Merry Jane, Primal RunAmoc, and Primal Sawyer.
