As the name suggests, this clever leather slip-on shoe defies expectations. The Rogue's relaxed, footloose fit is shrewdly concealed under a guise of classic styling and rich aged leather, for covert comfort anywhere you roam.

Includes removable suede insoles. Sheepskin fleece insoles can be purchased separately.

Sizing note: The Regular width Rogue may feel snug at first. While the leather will stretch over time, you may consider going up a size. The Wide width is roomier and more likely to be true to your normal Softstar size.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

    They run slightly large

    Rating

I would have ordered a size down if I had realized how large these shoes run. I have a number of other pairs of Softstar Shoes and should just ignore the advice about sizing up or down when it is given in the item descriptions, and stick with what I considered to be "my size". That being said, these are very nice as slip on shoes for doing things in the yard and, occasionally, for wearing with dressier outfits with appropriate slacks. Recommended but not my favorite style offered here.

    So soft

    Rating

I stumbled upon the Softstar site, 30-some years after our daughters outgrew the Softstar toddler/child shoes we had. They still are in business! And they make adult shoes! I bought a pair of Rogues for myself and fell in love with them upon arrival. Supple, like a hug for the feet, like a good pair of wool socks. I wear shoes as little as possible, and never in the house, and yet nearly forgot to take them off. They do just fine on Wisconsin winter sidewalks on my daily walks, as long as the snow isn’t deep. Thank you, Elves!

I am on my 4th pair of these shoes. I wear them every day. I have had to restich the uppers on 2 of my previous pairs. but they are so comfortable I forget that I am wearing them.

    The G.O.A.T.

    Rating

No, really. The most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. I feel like I can do anything in them. Dinner. Movies. Gardening. Work. Late night free form jazz dancing. Chasing my dog through the park when she decides it’s time for us to get our steps in. Next stop the moon! They are sized a little longer and a little looser in all the right ways from the more athletic runamocs… it gives them a much more causal feel. Between the two … I don’t think you would need any other shoes. Thanks to the Softstar gang for making my feet feel alive again!

    Now We’re Talkin’!

I’m wearing my beautiful brown Rogues as I write. I hope they last forever. I wanted them primarily to serve as my house slipper/shoe, and they fit that role perfectly for me., but the gorgeous soft leather and craftsmanship make them suitable for anywhere. I have a long, wide foot for a woman; I’m also old enough to have put my feet through a lot, including occasional injury with consequent arthritic pain. These are terrifically comfortable and also very good for my balance. I ordered them in wide and love the toe room. I’ll put sheepskin insoles in as the weather gets colder. Love them!

    Just ordered second pair

    Rating

I have several different styles of softstar shoes and have worn them exclusively for several years. My first pair was the Rogue (which I dyed red), but the toe shape never really worked for my wide foot - so on to others, including the Primal Run Amok, which became my favorites. When the new Rogue, with the wider toe box and gorgeous deep red color, was offered, I snapped it up. After wearing it daily for the last six weeks, and being aware that too often color choices change, I decided to buy a second pair (you can never have too much of whatever it is that makes you smile in the mornings). Maybe a little silly, but now I have a pair in reserve, just in case or when my current pair wears out....

    Back for another pair :-)

    Rating

I ordered my first pair of Rogues a little over 4 years ago and have worn them from fall through spring every year. The soles show very little wear, but the shoes themselves have really stretched with use. For my first pair, I followed the original sizing instructions (sized up one size) and they fit perfectly out of the box. This time though, knowing how much I wear them and how active I am, I suspected I’d do better with my normal size—and lucky me, there was a pair on Clearance! These are starting out comfortably snug and the footbed is more accurate to the length of my stubby feet. As usual, I will order the optional fleece insoles once the weather cools. Thank you Softstar!

Great quality! Super comfortable. I love this shoe! Wore them to a business dinner last night and have them on in the office at work right now. Ordered the wides in my normal shoe size and they are perfect. Blown away buy the quality and how fast they shipped to me in Chile! Great company and excellent product

    Great shoes

    Rating

I was quite surprised at how wide/flat the Rogues were when I first received them. I realized after much trying that I should have ordered a regular size 8, instead of the wide, as I seem to have misunderstood your sizing description. I understand that sizes may vary depending on the style of the shoe and their use. I was shy to return them for an exchange thinking of the environmental cost. Still the shoes themselves are great! Easy to wear and slip on, it’s just that I must be careful not to trip. They will be better with thick socks. Except that defeats the purpose of these heavenly light slip-ons. Recently I received my size 8 regular Moc 3’s and I love them!! I currently own several pairs of SoftStars, but in the future will try to be more careful with sizing.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thanks Barbara! Don't be shy about returning/exchanging - that is often needed with footwear, although we love your consideration of the environmental impact.
  11. LOVE

    Rating

I have been looking for a long while for a pair of shoes that are “quick to slip on,” “comfy,” “on the go around the house.” The prior shoe was a croc. I wanted to replace them for so long but could not come to grips on anything meeting the convenience of a croc. THESE ARE IT. They are so comfy, easy to slip on and off, simple. I wear them to go around my farm. I wear them while working out in my home gym. I wear them for convenience. I could care less about the waterproofing a croc has, these are my everyday! BONUS: They fit my wide feet. I get everything Softstar offers in wide, and these fit that bill I really needed to be able to wear these, hence why some other similar options were not options for me, I needed the wide. So comfortable for my surgically altered, wide set feet. MUST HAVE!

    Most Comfortable Shoe EVER!

    Rating

I purchased the Softstar Rogue in brown. Taking note of the fact that they say it runs short in the regular width, I opted for my normal size in Wide. I really think that either this or going up to the next size in regular would have worked for me. These have the widest toe box of any shoe I've ever purchased. That being said, I am glad I opted for the wide, as this gives me the option to wear toe spacers inside of the shoe. The leather is soft and conforms to your foot. The neoprene lining helps smooth it out, but you can still see where your toes are in the shoe. The other thing the lining does well though is keeps the shoe securely in place. I don't slip in these at all. The leather footbed is very comfortable. I have worn these with thin socks and without socks. Given the "winter" we are having, I have worn them in temperatures ranging from 20 to 55 degrees F and have been comfortable the whole time. I believe they may be warm in summer, but I often go barefoot at home and just slip something on to go out, so I believe these will work great year-round. Quality of materials and workmanship are amazing! The Rogue looks dressy because of the leather, but they feel like a slipper when you wear them. I can easily wear these casually or at the office. Thank you, Elves, for the most amazingly comfortable shoe ever!

    "Regular" versus “Wide”

    Rating

Please note, the Rogues in "Regular" size have a conical toe box, tappered to the toes. (And except for Switchbacks, most Softstars that are not in the "Primal" range have this conical toe box.) On the other hand, as indicated in their description, the Rogues in the "Wide" version have the "Hybrid Wide" soles, which are practically the same as the Primal Wide, and there we have all the space for the fan of the toes <3. And they have very soft leather and soles. (Too bad we can't find the wide Rogues and Switchbacks by clicking on the "Primal" range.) And I'll add that Softstar's customer service is great, the fastest shipping (and returns and refunds) I've ever seen!

    comfy but a little weird

    Rating

They feel like slippers more than shoes. I understand that they are "minimal" (which are the only kind of shoes I wear but these were my first from Soft Star) but it's a little weird to see the outlines of your toes sticking up through the leather. To be frank, part of the purpose of wearing shoes is so nobody else has to look at your toes. They are also a bit tight ... perhaps I should have gone a size up to 9 but I have never in my entire life had to buy a 9 because usually a 9 is like an entire inch too long.

    Rating

These have been my primary cool weather shoe for 9 years, since fall 2014. They're great indoors too; I'm wearing them as I type this. I'm back for a replacement pair because the tread has finally worn slick. The Vibram soles appear low-density, more like a mid-sole cushioning material that i expected to last a couple years; they proved surprisingly durable. The leather is in fairly good condition. Our winter air is quite dry; most seasons I remember to apply some Lexol leather conditioner. And the neoprene seems fine too, maybe a bit "polished" and less elastic than when new. I may check with a cobbler to see whether resoling would be worthwhile. (Would also have them redo the stitching that has worn away at the big toe.) I wear size 10U Dash RunAmoc, size M9 Chacos. I started with 10U regular width Rogues, but they were too short on the toes, had to return for 11U. They fit me well in socks, so they're of course somewhat floppy on my bare feet, which is how i usually wear them. It's fine for non-athletic purposes. I wanted some minimal/barefoot aspects like no-rise and light weight. These don't have a wide toe box, but they fit my feet that spent most of my life in traditional footwear. For minimalist shoes they're fairly cushy. My concept of ground-feel means my foot getting bruised by a rock--the cushioning helps make that infrequent. For venturing into the woods, I would want something more protective/rigid-soled than these Rogues. Rogues are flexible and take up little space packed. Recently I inline-skated around town with them in one hip pocket for going indoors. Rogues have no heel-cradling shape; the "heel box" is just vertical sides up from the outsoles' edges. Combined with the slip-on design that isn't snug around the ankles, it's easy for your heel to wander off-center, leading leather to contact the ground. For me this is the case particularly in a car with my foot on the gas pedal. So, the leather may receive some abuse, but it has held up remarkably well. Most scuffs easily buff out. I've spent about equal time in suede insoles (included) and sheepskin (used to be included). With the sheepskin, they're quite warm yet surprisingly breathable. When i wear socks, it's mainly to keep my ankles warm. But Rogues are still not breathable or cool enough for me in warm, humid weather, even with the suede insoles.

Ordered the wide width/primal friendly Rogue in the same size as my Primal Run Amoks, which I have practically lived in. The Rogue was not love at first step like the Run Amok was, but after a few weeks of regular wear they have molded to the shape of my feet and are really great. In my corner of the world we live in muddy barn boots ten months of the year and the expectation is when you go visiting you leave your boots at the door and change into slippers or indoor shoes. I love that I can just slip into my Rogues, and they are so flexible and light I can stuff them in a pocket of my backpack.

    Great shoe!

    Rating

I’ve had these a few months and wear them almost everyday. I love the easy slip on style and they are incredibly flexible and soft. They almost make me feel like I’m cheating and wearing house shoes to work. ???? Time will tell how they hold up, but so far they show very little wear. I do work in an office and primarily wear them inside, so I haven’t tested them rigorously. In summary. I’m a fan and would buy them again.

    Rating

I work in a warehouse/office. Dress is casual and my rogues are the perfect shoe for this environment. No laces to get caught on pallets in the warehouse and they feel like slippers. These might not work if the warehouse had heavy equipment, but ours is just a shipping warehouse, so no need for steel toed boots.
  24. A conflicted review; love the shoe, but need them to be repairable

    Rating

My spouse has made it to almost three years of rather heavy wear before they've worn a hole through the sole. I've read that these shoes don't allow for a typical re-soling, so now we're exploring a patch. They've been very comfortable and, at this point, cost per use is very low. We just don't want to completely throw them out since they're overall in really good shape.
  25. One Year Later

    Rating

I previously submitted a review of these shoes on July 1, 2022. As I noted before, the soles of the shoes are wearing down. I haven't worn a hole completely through them yet but the part of the shoe that is below my front foot pad and the part below my heel are both getting quite thin. This is really too bad. The shoes are holding together still. Everything else about them is still great. They continue to be comfortable. The uppers are still in great shape even though I've worn them every day for over a year now. I still go hiking, biking, and walking in them. They're starting to look a little faded but I imagine that if I polished them, they'd still shine beautifully. I still highly recommend these shoes. I'm at a 4 star (though I'd give it 4.5, if I could) because of the soles. It seems like a pretty expensive shoe to wear through this quickly (I've been averaging about 200,000 steps per month over the last year, FYI). I'll check back in next year and provide an update.

These are comfortable like the nicest slippers you have ever worn, and with the Vibram sole I can use them outside. Nice and wide in the toe area, a good choice to help the transition if you're moving to wide toe-box running shoes. With a sheepskin insole, these are the bomb! I wear these more than any other pair of shoes I own.

    NOT barefoot/minimalist, narrow toe box

    Rating

This review is based solely on the barefoot qualities, not craftsmanship. If you care about having healthy feet and splayed toes then these are not for you. I love Primal RunAmocs and Sawyers and have several pairs of each but I had to return these. I could tell the toe box was smaller than primals by the pictures but it was far worse in person. The toe box is way too narrow thus this is not a barefoot or minimalist shoe. These are even more narrow than the chukkas. Having a proper toe box is the most important barefoot quality, and this is sorely lacking in that department. It was so bad I can't imagine the toe box being wide enough even if I went 3 or more sizes higher than what I wear with Primal RunAmocs and Sawyers. It is sad that the company that sells the best barefoot shoes on the market allows their other models to have such awful toe boxes. In Jan 2021 I sent an email to Softstar asking them to sell safety toe shoes or boots for those of us that need them for work, this was their response. "Unfortunately, a steel toe design would not align with our goals for the flexible, minimalist footwear that we make. All of our shoes are made with soft leather uppers and flexible soles intended to instill a barefoot-like feel. I apologize we aren't able to accommodate this request, but we appreciate your message and hope you are able to find a solution that works for you." They aren't willing to offer safety toe shoes even though there is nothing stopping them from selling a safety toe shoe or boot with zero drop, no arch support, no toe spring, is as flexible as the safety toe allows, and most importantly has a wide toe box, but they do not offer a proper toe box on these. Very hypocritical. Over two years later and there is only one safety toe barefoot style boot on the market, but it is over $1000 and not even made in the USA, though it has better barefoot qualities than these and their chukkas.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hello Austin - we make many styles of shoes to meet customer needs, and not all customers want or need a primal toe box. Just as you prefer the wider primal shape, we have many other customers who prefer the Rogue, Chukka and Roo shapes. What is a healthy shape for you can be swimmingly too wide for someone else whose foot is a different shape. Health is not a single size.

With regards to a steel toe boot - we agree this would be awesome to offer and have prototyped several pairs. We learned that our soft, flexible construction methods do not pair well with a rigid, heavier toe box in terms of function (tripping) , comfort OR durability. Designing new shoes takes a lot of time and investment. Just popping a steel toe on a boot sounds easy, but we have not found that to be the case, especially for an important PPE regulated item of clothing.

These are my favorite work shoes. I work 24-hr shifts in a hospital and spend a lot of time on my feet. I’ve been wearing them for the past 3+ years, and these are the only shoes that don’t cause back pain after a few hours. Just got on here to buy a new pair and was a bit sad to see they don’t come with sheepskin anymore. I’ll try them without but will prob end up buying the sheepskin inserts separately.

I bought a size up as recommended and they fit well. I've had them for a few months and wear them almost all the time. I really enjoy the lining of the shoe, makes my foot feel more secure. The insole feels more than what is typical for a Soft Star shoe, but I like it. The leather might be stretching out a little bit I don't think it will affect the fit. I like the brown. I'm not sure if I would have gotten another color if there were more available. It is a rather boxy shoe and doesn't feel very feminine, but they keep my feet warm without the bulk of a boot.

I love having both a pair of black and a pair of brown...but I found the leather stretches out when I wear them with socks of varying thickness. I read about the sheepskin inserts and will try that as a workaround, BUT if that doesn't work, I might order doubles of each; I'm not keen on lace-ups.

I had a pair of moccasins from SoftStar that I’d purchased ~10-12 years ago. I loved them. A couple years later, I bought a 2nd pair. A year ago I was devastated to discover they no longer made those moccasins. Then I received an email about these shoes and I bought a pair. I love them just as much as the original moccasins. More so because the sides aren’t open. These are comfortable shoes that make walking feel as if you’re barefoot.

    So comfy

    Rating

These shoes are just so comfy. I did end up getting a shoe that's two sizes larger than my foot measurement suggested I should (instead of one size larger, as is recommended). The shoe that was one size larger was too snug on my toes for my comfort. Let me tell you though, the shoes I ended up with are amazingly comfortable. I wear them everyday as my only outdoor pair of shoes. I have gone hiking in them, biking in them, walking through wet grassy fields with them.... They're great shoes. P.S. I've had mine for about a month now. The soles are scuffing noticeably at the toes and the heel (maybe because my shoe size is ever so slightly larger than my foot). I am a little worried that the soles of these shoes will give out before I want to have to buy new shoes. But we'll see what happens (I'll try to come back and update this review next year and see where we are). The shoes get dirty from outdoor use (I have the black variety) but it wipes off with a rag. Other than those two things I can't see any fault in the shoes. P.P.S. Softstar is amazing. Full stop.

I absolutely love my Moc3s for running! I keep wanting to love SoftStar as my everyday shoe, but alas, experience the same issue - heel strike. WIth running, contact occurs fore/midfoot. Walking gait pattern occurs with a heel strike. I had hoped the Rogues with a little more material in the sole may work, but still find too jarring. Perhaps I am unique in this sense? The Rogue is a beautiful shoe I will have to admire from a distance.

I bought these just in time for the cold and snow, not for use as dress shoes but mostly as a reliable runabout for the cold, wet season. I also have the Primal RunAmoc. I like these better for everyday use especially this time of year because they are so darn easy to slip on and off plus they are warmer. Amazingly light weight as well. With the sheepskin insole, the Rogues keep my feet warm even down to below freezing and in snow that is less deep than the top of the shoe. I waterproofed them before using them outdoors and, so far, my feet have remained dry in this west coast weather. They have surprisingly good traction on all outdoor surfaces including snow. The sole is not as dense as the Omniflex or Megagrip, but is light and spongy which gives the shoe a great feel for the ground. and a little more give on pavement or other hard surfaces. I slip these on to go feed the ducks, let them out, put them in for the night, bring in firewood, get the mail, and so on. They are a delight for this purpose, and do just fine in the rain and snow. They are secure enough to sprint in on a wet grassy field but are not at home on uneven terrain, such as a singletrack trail up a mountain, which I tried recently with them. I would suppose that trail running would be out of the question. Otherwise they are amazingly versatile and oh so comfortable. I'm used to it now but for awhile I felt naughty for putting what felt like luxurious slippers on to go outside in the rain or to shovel snow. Not too shabby for a dress shoe!

OH MY GOODNESS after years of wearing ONLY Softstar shoes I cannot believe I'm just now wearing the Rogue. It is absolute HEAVEN. I usually wear the Ballerines or the Run Amocs. The boots are also great. Literally a day doesn't go by that I'm not wearing one of these models. However after two days of my new Rogues. OMG. I am just SO SO SAD that there aren't prettier colors! If I could custom design colors these it would be a dream. These are so soft, so flexible, they're like wearing comfy slippers that work on any terrain. My husband has had his pair for two weeks and won't take them off. A lot of info said to size up so I did -- but it didn't work for me. I'm typically a solid 8U so ordered the 9U, they were huge. Changed for the 8U which fits perfectly. Please let us have more color choices!!!

I was looking for a good house shoe. Something I could slip on and off but also something that would work to run out to get the mail or the trash cans, maybe a quick run to the store every once in a while. These are perfect. You can 100% wear them as a slipper with the heel folded down and they are very secure with the heel up (I was wearing them while throwing the football the other day). I did find the fuzzy (sheepskin fleece) insoles to be too warm but the sued ones are very nice and after almost a year of near daily use I have yet to notice any foul smell. I can wear them all day while working at home with very little sweat or overheating. I typically wear them without socks and my feet can slide in and out without disturbing the insole. I sometimes wear them out with socks and jeans and they never look too casual. I wish I would have bought these earlier, its so rare to have something work exactly as I had hoped. I have nothing bad to say about them.

I ordered these for my son. He wore through the seams in only 2 months, but Softstar stood by their product and replaced them without any problems. He loves the comfort and convenience of the shoes with the sheepskin liner. The only problem he has with these shoes is the neoprene like/polyester/nylon liner (not sure what it is made of) on the inside of the shoes. The shoes smell badly, just like the old Vibram 5 Finger Toe shoes did, after wearing for just a few weeks. Please stay with the natural leather in the future.

Hi I have been wearing soft stars for a few years with mixed results. I love the company but I have had so many shoes fall apart too soon or not fit that well. I have more square feet, they do not taper, so my toes still end up being squished. and yet the primal runamocs are too wide and there is a lot of extra shoe that I have been tripping over. And so I was at a loss at what to wear at work, hours on concrete and finally decided to try the Rouge. I did not like that they are so pointy but ordered a size or 2 up. At first I hated the pointy toes and was worried I would trip all over, because they are a bit big. But, they are wide enough in the toes so that my damaged toes are starting to recover a bit! I could wear correct toes if I ever try them again. The sheep insole makes them very cozy for work. They are simple and light. No laces to trip on. I get compliments. My only wish is that there could be a square toe version. I may order a smaller size to see if they fit a bit better.

Question: if you know the shoes are one size off, why not put the right number on the shoes and not have us to order a size off. Then, we could order the right size. If they are one size off, relabel the shoes.

    Response from store

Hi Jerrie - Thanks for the review and the suggestions! We strive to try and make all styles fit exactly the same, but different styles fit more snug or more loose depending on the upper design. Because we don't want to make mistakes (and it can be tough with 20 sizes, 3 widths and so many styles) we standardize on the sole size.

    My new favorite walking shoe

    Rating

I'm glad to have gotten a lot of advice from the elves before deciding what size to order. In the end we got it exactly right and I got a shoe that fits like a slipper but actually keeps my feet warm in the Boston winter. Previously, the only thing to have accomplished that was the Phoenix boot. Somehow, the sole is thick enough to keep my feet warm (with the sheepskin insert) but flexible enough to keep my feet moving naturally. I'd worried about a slip-on not feeling secure enough. But even without ties and with the leather stretching a bit, my feet can relax and my toes don't need to grip at anything. The toe box (in regular width) is wide enough for feet that never wore wide shoes but *have* been wearing barefoot style (or going barefoot) for several years. I can even fit with Correct Toes now that the leather has broken in. After foot surgery ten years ago, I don't play around with shoes that aren't basically perfect for my foot health. I tried seven different shoes from six different barefoot brands before settling on these as my new cool- and cold-weather walking shoes.

I really, really want to love these shoes. I lived in my Dash Run Amoks this summer and wanted a warmer shoe for the winter months. Unfortunately, this shoe just isn't working for me. Without the thicker insole, it's simply too big. With the thicker insole, it's warm and comfortable, but my socks don't stay put. After walking for ten minutes, half of my sock is squished by my toes at the front of the shoe. I'm going to keep trying with different socks to see if I can find a pair that work, but I'm really disappointed. I wanted these to be my go-to shoe for the fall and winter.

I own a number of different softstar styles and I think these are my favorite. I wore these for the first time today for a long walk in the park and they were perfect. So comfortable, wonderful ground feel. I didn't think too much about my shoes as I walked, which is always a sign, to me, of a great shoe. As other reviewers said, I probably could have worn my usual size, but I feel like I'm kind of in between and so the roominess is comfortable. I LOVE the sheepskin insert. I have terrible allergies and normally cannot wear wool at all, but the sheepskin is completely comfortable and doesn't irritate my skin. I wore these without socks for a few hours and was totally fine.

Love these! So cozy and comfortable! I'm a knitter, so putting on these shoes felt very similar to putting on a just finished knit sweater, knowing someone had made these by hand it just the coolest. I wonder if I'm the only one, but I'm actually disappointed I went up a size. I measured my foot, and emailed and purchased the size recommended but I do find them a touch big, especially as I'm assuming they will stretch out slightly. I put the insoles in (so warm by the way) and now my heel slips a bit because the material on the inside is so smooth. And I wish the toe was just a touch rounder. Still going to wear these like crazy though and highly recommend them!!! I may try to add something around the ankle part after a while if I find that they are just getting too big. I'm in Canada so it is much too difficult and expensive to exchange them. Awesome shoes, they are so cozy! Highly recommend them!

I’ve been enjoying Roos for many years now, but wanted a shoe less likely to get soaked by the wet vegetation I walk through often, so I decided to try the Rogue. I bought a size larger as suggested, and it was a wise choice for length. However, my narrow heal slips a lot. Therefore, I needed to put in the sheepskin insoles right away. The shoes are wonderfully comfortable, but don’t start out as waterproof as the Roos. I needed to treat them after I got wet feet the very first time I wore them. Nevertheless, I’ll probably buy the Rogue again the next time I need shoes.

    Rating

This is my fourth pair of SoftStars and I was shocked at the comfort level when I tried these on. I wear a 5U-Wide in the Merry Jane, and a 6U (Regular) in the Rogue fits perfectly. My wide feet have plenty of wiggle room, but the shoes are definitely not sloppy loose. These shoes are secure on the feet and ridiculously comfortable. And that’s with the standard suede insoles—I haven’t even tried the fleece yet since it’s summer. These have a masculine house-shoe look, but I’m a petite, 36-year-old female and I’m happy to wear them about! I pair mine casually with leggings or skinny jeans. I opted for the brown and the color/texture is reminiscent of a worn leather jacket—it’s awesome. I love the little wrinkles that gather at the topside of the foot. I may come back for the black another time. I would recommend these shoes to everyone!

Fantastic indoor shoe for winter wear. The furry liner keeps my feet extra cozy in the classroom and at home. My feet can’t wait to slide into them and begin the day. I have two pairs of Mary Janes; a wide pair to accommodate thick wool socks, and a regular regular pair for thinner socks. Both fit the shape of my foot perfectly. The Rogues are a less perfect fit, but still comfortable. There seems to be more length at the toe, and less width at the ball of the foot. For me, that means some unused space at the tip of my big toe, and a slight feeling of falling off at the baby toe. Overall, they are fine and comfy.

Turns out it was all that support that was preventing his foot from flexing and causing so much discomfort. It’s been two years now and I’ve yet to hear one complaint about his feet. He will miss them this winter. I think he’ll try to wear them anyways. The price is steep from the $30 Walmart pairs we purchased before and the definitely wear out in just one year, but it is still worth it to take good care of your body. God only gives us one set of feet!
  85. Simply the BEST

    Rating

These shoes are the best! I wear a women’s 11, ordered the 10U and they fit great with or without socks (even heavy hiking socks). Usually I have to buy a different size depending on if I plan to wear with socks or not. I love that these are flexible in that way. These will be great shoes for PNW Fall/Winter/Spring. If you don’t mind having warm feet, you could use them in summer too. They perform nicely in the rain. Very comfortable and the sole is still very flexible despite it looking like it isn’t.

Last year i had a bunionectomy and hammertoe surgery on my left foot and I've had these in black for over a month and hands down most comfortable shoe ive ever owned. Its been over 90 degrees and i wear these, i do get a bit sweaty #nosocks but they dry out fast and still dont stink. I skateboard but i refuse to skate my rogues so the only other shoes i have that fit are crocs. Come tax season im getting a pair of primals to no-grip skateboard in, cant wait! Love you elves!

these are my first pair of real minimal shoes. my wife finally convinced me to try them. They are so comfortable with or "without" socks (gasp) i'm really loving them. I wish they would look a little less casual with a business suit. otherwise I have moved into my new rogues. thank you softstar
  88. I love these shoes!

    Rating

I love these shoes! I know the description says they tend to run small and to order 1 size larger than my regular size, but I was looking for a less casual looking shoe than the Moc3 but with that snug fit, so I ordered my regular size and I am so glad I did. They are perfect!!! I think I am actually right in between sizes for some of the styles - wish I could order 1/2 sizes for the Ballerines!

Easy on the feet and on the eyes

    Rating

I love wearing these around the home and office. They may not look really formal, but they don't look bad either, and they're really comfortable even without the inserts they come with. Definitely pay attention to the suggestion about ordering a larger size. My other Softstar shoes are 10U, and these in an 11U were actually perfect for me.
  90. Definitely worth buying

    Rating

Excellent shoes. Definitely worth buying if you looking for a pair of no frill shoes that should last for a long time. So light weight that you can barely feel them. On the sizing: if you plan to wear socks, etc, definitely size up.
  91. Comfortable, attractive and easy to pull on.

Just right for my son - another great style from Softstar.
  92. I find these super comfy, light and flexible

    Rating

I find these super comfy, light and flexible with a nice wide toe box for lots of wiggle room. My feet are 10 inches long and so I am on the border between 8U and 9U. I followed the advice of the elves and sized up to 9U and find it perfect for me in this shoe! (Though I wear an 8U in the Moc3). Being a shoe without laces they have a looser feel to them than any of the lace up shoes, especially around the ankle. That being said it hasn't bothered me, affected my stride, or made me feel as if they are falling off. (in fact it kind of adds to the comfy slipper like feel) I really recommend these, they are awesome!
  93. Each step feels soft and great

    Rating

I wear them with the sheepskin inserts and with and without socks. I even wear them around the house when I would normally go barefoot just because they feel so good. Fwiw, my foot (at the big toe) is 10 1/8 inches, which would measure as a Softstar size 9U but these are 11 and fit just right. Smaller would not have worked.

    Doesn't run small at all

    Rating

I wish I ordered my regular size 9 instead of 10 (on most shoes I am 9.5). The size 10 is way too large! They really do feel super comfortable. Too bad I have to send them back, pay for exchange and wait.... But I do want them!
  95. like slippers all day

    Rating

I love these shoes. They are sturdy, and yet the softest leather imaginable. It is winter where I live, and, unless there is snow or it is very, very cold they are good to go. I feel like I am in bedroom slippers; make me feel like I am cheating! I started wearing zero drop shoes late last summer, and moved into minimal shoes with these. I am so happy. I had been misled and not very comfortable in shoes since I was about 7 (I am now 77). Thanks so much for these wonderful shoes.

    Rating

I have five pairs of Rogues in black and am about to order a further two pairs. I have diabetes Type 2 and need to care for my feet. It is safest for me to wear them without socks. Rogues provide me with steadiness (my feet are flat on the ground) and comfort. I wear a pair a day, changing the insoles depending on the weather. I keep them polished with Kiwi Parade Gloss and they buff up well and look smart. Highly recommended. To illustrate how important Rogues are to me: as a pensioner on a limited income the cost of importing two pairs into the UK is high: there's the initial cost in US dollars, postage and then on arrival in UK, import duties and taxes making the overall total I have to pay just over £GB400 = UD$520 @ £1 = $1.30. It's worth it to me - I wear no other shoes inside or outside the house.
  99. Amaxzingly comfortable and cosy#!

    Rating

I got my first pair of these shoes yesterday and after slipping them on I started to sing their praises! That feeling of comfort! Wonderful! I already have my Mary Janes and never took them off. I put in sheep soles thinking it would be warm enough even for winter but the wet weather is more the problem so these ones are my choice now for winter time. I do not want to take them off either, Words cannot really describe the joy of wearing such shoes! I went up a size and think that is good although my first few steps I tripped, needed to get used to a longer shoe it seems. Very comfy now after only wearing them the first day. Thanks Elves! And Merry Christmas!
  100. a bit big, but so comfortable and light!

    Rating

I could copy and paste the review from "Astronaut", but want to give 5 stars even if the recommended one size up from the normal one is a bit big for me. Maybe because my ankle is very small? - All the same I love to wear them (of course, only with the thick winter insole so let them fit better). They are extremely light and warm, look exactly like on the photos and - even if I had to wait for almost two months and was forced to pay 60 € to get them out of the italian customs!! - in the end I'm happy to have them! Thank you, Elves, for your friendly help! P.S. waiting for you to open a shop in Europe to evitate the problems with the expensive customs1!!... ;-)
  101. Comfortable and warm, but a little roomy for my narrow foot

    Rating

Overall, I am satisfied with this shoe. It's comfortable, warm, and I can slip it on easily with one hand while holding a baby with the other. I have narrow Roos and Mary Janes, but they do not make this shoe narrow. After consulting with the elves, I decided to go against the recommendation to size up. It fits well, and I am glad I didn't size up. I gave it 4 stars because it is still slightly roomy.

    too large

    Rating

These are potentially great shoes, just like any other Softstar shoes. I've always been more than happy with Softstar, Ive been a customer for years, and their's are the only shoes I own. However, there shoes were disappointing. I followed the advice on the website to order one size up and I'm not sure it was not a good advice. The sides and back are just too big, loose and soft, my foot shifts in there and ends up diagonally resting on the sides instead of on the sole. I wish I ordered my size instead - it may have made the difference between a pair of shoes that is never worn to one that is worn daily. I can't return them any more either. Next time, I'll buy Rouge in my regular size and I hope it will be just right.

My first pair of Rogues 3 years ago unfortunately turned out to let my feet get soaking wet even in just very light drizzling rain... - So I was really hesitating to order another time but in the end I did. And this time? - More accidentally than on purpose I got into most heavy rainfalls and: just totally dry! Perfect. The comfort of walking almost like in socks ist just great anyway and the manufacturing of the shoes is really great and solid. So: 5 soft stars!
  105. A great shoe!

    Rating

I have had these shoes for about a month. When I first tried them on I thought, "like butta." They are very comfortable and have a relaxed vibe. The leather has a look of nice things so I think they can work when the occasion calls for more formal attire, but I don't dress like that often and they look great with a pair of jeans. The Rambler is a warm shoe. I took out the insert and haven't used it with the sheepskin, but wearing them barefoot is warm in So-cal Spring. This is not a complaint, and I think I tend to have warm feet, just a comment that my feet are toasty in these. I'm sure in colder weather with the sheepskin these will be great. My only real complaint about these is the sole extends out from the shoe around the foot about a centimeter. This is not in itself a huge deal, but for driving, this edge can dig into the heel and make for an uncomfortable experience. I don't rate the shoe lower because of this, I don't dislike the shoe because of this, but these were never meant to be my daily shoes, so I might not be so agreeable if I were wearing them every day.
  106. your feet will thank you

    Rating

Like you I read the reviews before investing in a Soft Star shoe. And I agree with everyone else; the company has good old fashioned service and the rogue, wow, it is so cozy! I have never spent this much for a pair of shoes yet, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. My feet notice and crave the SSS. If you choose food, people and environments that enable you to feel your best, than the rogue is for you! I agree with the advice to size up. Initially my big toes hit the top of the shoe. But because leather naturally lengthens, it soon offered the right amount of space for my feet. I will definitely buy another pair of SSS. FYI: I've been wearing them almost daily for several months.
  107. Nothing but regret

    Rating

I regret buying these shoes, but I can't return them since I wore them a few days before I realized how much I disliked them. The only thing I liked about these shoes is the sheepskin liner, which really isn't even the shoe itself! I bought a set of Vibram Five Fingers and I wear those instead. Note from the Elves: Thanks for your feedback Chris - we are sorry these were not what you were looking for. We value your input and would like to better understand what you disliked so we could either improve and/or help you find a style more to your liking.
  108. Love them

    Rating

I really like these shoes and use them for shorter trips out of the house and when visiting (obviously easy to remove). Love the sheepskin insoles in winter and have just swapped to suede for the summer. More than adequate ground feel but with protection. Wore them today on a dirt track and still found them very comfortable. Feet really free to spread and feel ground in these. They also make good slippers but I'm not allowed to use them inside and outside. Can't really justify two pairs and in fact bought run amoc 3 for inside the house ! Great service - I needed to go up in size and had to ship them back from the UK. No extra custom charges on exchange were made by softstar or uk customs as they were marked as custom free replacement.
  109. Love

    Rating

I love these shoes so much. I bought these in preparation for my work shoes to give out (worn daily for about 3 years made me concerned). As any amount of arch support kills my feet, it was a long quest to find these shoes. I teach Art which involves a ton of standing and moving. Having not worn minimalist shoes prior to these, I will say that various part of my legs and feet hurt at first. Once my body adjusted, I couldn't get over these shoes. They have the comfort of wearing slippers or house shoes but acceptable to wear in public! My only complaint is that I actually found the sheepskin inserts to be painfully annoying. They feel so plush when I first put them in but after a few steps they started sliding up the back of the shoe. I see another reviewer loves them so maybe it's just me. If you have never ordered from this company, take the plunge! Their customer service is amazing! Note from the Elves: Thanks MB for the great review! If you decide to get a new pair - please request some tape for your sheepskin inserts - it will keep them from riding up under your heel.
  110. Unfortunately Disappointed

    Rating

I received a lot of help from the Elves when contemplating my order. The service is amazing. Definitely 5 starts for that. I wasn't sure what to expect of the Rogue. I was looking for a minimalist shoe to wear during winter when I walk in the morning, and wanted something that would stand up to wet terrain. The Rogue was recommended so I went with it. The reason I am disappointed is that the shoe is too big for me, and even with beeswax water proofing, my feet end up wet. It was a gamble. Due to the cost to ship back to the US, and also the exchange rate (I live in Australia), I decided to keep them and do wear them often. They just feel a little sloppy because they are a little too big. The fit feels better with the sheep skin insert, so will look forward to using them when the weather is a little cooler.
  111. My favorite barefoot/minimal shoe

    Rating

I own and wear the Roo Moccasin, suede Rambler, and the walnut Rogue from Soft Star. I also have minimal shoes that are meat to look like "normal" shoes, as well as some minimal sneakers and sandals. The Rogues were my first Soft Star shoe, and why I bought the others. I like them all, but the Rogues, which I have worn since the fall of 2012, are still my favorite, especially for cool or cold weather (in Chicago). I wore them this morning for my 3.5 mile walk to work, in a bit of rain and with some ice and snow on the the ground. They just have a comfort that is a step (pun intended) above my next favorites. They are roomy even for my wide foot, yet stay on very comfortably, with or without socks. The ground feel is perfect for a shoe - the soles are an ideal balance between protective and flexible. I keep refreshing them with leather conditioner, and treating them for water resistance, and they are holding up amazingly well. When I need to, I will buy another pair. I'd love the Elves to make these in a version that goes over the ankle as well for snow. I also enjoy wearing the Roo and Rambler - but usually I only wear those for a brief time in the spring before switching to sandals and in the fall before switching back to the Rogues. The Rogues get me through all but the worst winter weather in comfort and warmth. Thank you Elves!

These are my second pair of Rogues and fourth from the elves. I searched far and wide for an attractive moccasin like shoe. These are the best! I absolutely love them.
  114. A most perfect shoe!

    Rating

I lived in my Ballerines all summer and though I still think they are the perfect summer shoe (mmm, well, tied with the Solstice Sandal!) I knew I needed something with more coverage for the PNW rainy winter. I actually researched other winter shoes and kept coming back to these, mostly because I know the quality is always spot on and the elves stand behind their work. I have grade 2 spondylolisthesis so minimalist shoes (no heel) are critical to me getting through my day without debilitating back pain...the typical winter boots people wear here are killer on my back. When I put these shoes on, it was love. They hugged my foot in all the right places. And the real test has been wearing them out and about...they have kept my feet warm and dry. Granted, I'm not intentionally slogging through mud puddles in them, but running errands and trips through parking lots in the rain and on wet ground, they've done what I needed them to do. And with incredible comfort. I also really appreciate how well they fit the foot without having to be tied (call me lazy). I really like the neutral color of these shoes. The go with almost everything. But I wanted options so my black pair arrived today :)
  115. order TWO sizes up

    Rating

There came last night, and though I followed the elves' advice and ordered a size up, I'll be exchanging them for another size up. Following the sizing guidelines, I should be a 10U, but I have three pairs of softstar shoes in 11U - Roo mocs, Solstice sandals, and ballerines. These are all comfortable except the ballerines, and I think the fact that those crunch my toes has to do with my arches collapsing - ballerines just aren't the right style for me. The 12U Rogues I received actually measure half an inch shorter in the sole that my comfortable 11U Roos. Not the end of the world, I realized it after I had tried them on and will be able to exchange them for 13U, but a little bit annoying, and I'm out the return shipping on shoes that were pricey to begin with. The sizing should be more consistent between styles.
  116. I love these!

These are practically the only shoes I wear now and I have four pairs that I have dyed various colours. They are incredibly comfortable and seem to hold up well to both country and city walking. Just great! Note from the Elves: Hi Sydney! Please send us photos of your collection - we'd love to see what you did. Thanks for the great review!
  117. Feels Great!

    Rating

These fit just like my Ramblers (the first shoes I bought from Soft Star Shoes), and my Roos. I ordered the same size in these, and they fit just right. They are even more comfortable due to the Breathe-o-prene around the ankles--holds them on securely. Great purchase for comfortable shoes.
  118. Softstar saves my feet

    Rating

I now have several pairs of Softstar shoes. So does my partner. I started with Runamuck lite and wide for the heat of summer. I love them. I have worn them everyday. My bunions which were so Painful that I could barely walk before I used these shoes. With the glove soft leather and flexible sole, I found myself enjoying putting them on and gradually found I could walk longer distances. I have thrown away arch supports and rigid shoes and can walk 2-3 miles a day. Get lots of positive comments about the colors too. I moved to Mexico where streets are cobbles and made of stone. I decided to try the Rogues for the ease of pulling them on and the thicker sole.. I am completely happy with the look and comfort for the next season. Even tho they are not wide they fill well. They may run a bit smaller than the other style but the advice of the Elves was perfect. !!! Amazing service from the Elves!!! Kind, patient helpful and gracious. ********** I love my Elves.***********
  119. incredibly comfortable and versatile

    Rating

These are very comfortable shoes for work and anything. I took out the lining and wear them like that for running and work. I actually prefer these for running more than the moc3 runamoc that I also own. I originally bought the moc3 for running and the rogue for work. But after a couple months I switched their purposes. Neither of these shoes have laces and I sometimes wish i could have them more firm on my feet which laces would accomplish. I put these shoes through a lot of punishment. I run in them, shovel dirt and garden in them, work in them. The laces at the toe are starting to wear out. Also the vibram trail soles have worn smooth under the balls of my feet. But other than that, they look invincible. Very fine craftsmanship. I've owned them for about seven months at this point. Highly, highly recommend this shoe.

I work in a factory so far for over 6 years the last two years I have worn these shoes and I can say they are better than any boots I have ever worn. I wear these everywhere everyday I can say they hold up to the miles I put on them in a work day. Thanks so much for these shoes.

    Rating

I'm an addict. I bought a pair of Soft Star shoes and lived them so much I had to try other styles. These are less fashionable than some but have been my go to winter shoe. They slide off easily instead of tracking mud. Peek out from my jeans and slacks without fan fare and clean up nicely if the mud got deep.
  122. Awesomeness

  125. Not just for men...

    Rating

I absolutely love these shoes. I was hesitant because they are described as men's shoes. But just like there are workbooks for men, there are also workbooks for ladies. This is the same kind of thing. They look great and feel even better. In the shoe world, I wear an 8 1/2 wide. Even though these don't come in a wide, they fit great. I wear a thin sock with the sheepskin insoles and they fit great. I really don't feel like I have a shoe on, they are that comfortable. Note from the Elves: Thanks Connie! All of our styles are designed with function and comfort in mind, not gender :-). We are aware that many of our reviewers consider this to be a men's shoe, but we try never to put our shoes in boxes, both literally and figuratively :-).

  128. Great, but too narrow

    Rating

I have an old pair of rogues that I love (5 stars!). They're incredibly comfortable and are everything I could want in a casual shoe. I even wore them to work all the time. However, I rated these at a 3 because I bought a new pair this year, and it seems the design is narrower now. My toes were way too squished, so I had to return them. It was a sad day.
  129. Pretty Awesome

    Rating

I've been pondering why some people have difficulty getting these to last. I bought these and another model (the Portlander) and I completely stopped wearing ALL my other shoes since. It's been nearly 16 months solid including trips abroad. And no problems at all. They're amazing and comfortable. They wear really well and are pretty much still almost brand-new. The stitching came a bit loose in the toes of the OTHER model (Portlander), but not in these. I'll gladly send those in for a FREE repair and pay the $5 shipping to get them back- SOO worth it. Also, I've been wondering why some people wear them out so fast (months) and for other ppl they can last years. I've just come up with the obvious- some people are really hard on their possessions, whereas other really take care of them. Also, we can't forget that people's bodies and feet are very different and the way they walk is just really hard on shoes. So, no flaws with Soft Stars that I can tell. I think some ppl just have the right combination of body/foot type and taking care of their belongings, and others just don't.
  130. Amazingly comfortable shoes.....

    Rating

I've owned 4-5 pairs of different Soft Star shoes. Everything from the Moc3 to Grippy Roos to Black Ramblers to these. And the Adult Rogues are BY FAR the most comfortable Soft Star shoes I've worn, to date. I love these shoes, and hope I get years of use out of them. And when it comes time to buy another pair, I won't hesitate. Soft Star shoes are just about the only shoes I ever wear nowadays. And the Adult Rogues are my favorite so far.....
  131. Too large!

I normally wear a size 11 (men) in Soft Star shoes. I ordered a size up, as suggested for the Rogue, but they are too big. Unfortunately, I have worn them outside and cannot return them. However, they are supremely comfortable.
  132. Insanely comfortable

    Rating

Yep, after wearing them daily for the last month I can safely say that these are the most insanely comfortable shoes I've ever worn---and for a longtime Soft Star Shoes customer, that's saying a lot. Similar to the reviewer "Another Ken," I've hesitated when going out the front door because it felt like I'd forgotten to put my shoes on :) If you're a purist, you may not like the somewhat thicker sole, but I find that slightest hint of give (I wouldn't call it cushioning) to be an improvement for me when spending all my time on pavement rather than on dirt trails. The neoprene-like uppers make slipping them on and off so easy that they could easily double as bedroom slippers. As for fit, I'm glad I ordered a size up from my usual 5U. Despite having plenty of wiggle room, the Rogues mold well to my foot---no slipping around inside the shoe, or having the heel lift off up the insole. Oh, and the Rogues are relatively unobtrusive for casual wear...at least they haven't elicited any attention from family and acquaintances, unlike my Ramblers and Mocs. Though I've never paid this much for a pair of shoes, I immediately ordered another pair in black (which happen to be a bit snugger and not quite as heavenly, but the shoes are handcrafted, after all, and that's perfectly okay). Now that I have both pairs, I doubt I'll be wearing my other shoes nearly as much. Thanks again, Elves!
  133. The most comfortable shoes I had ever worn!

    Rating

I love these shoes! I usually need to go through a dozen stores before I find shoes that feel comfortable. No need for doing that any more! I love my soft star shoes. I never thought any show can be that comfy and cozy and look good as well. highly recommend! Feeling supported, protected and connected with the earth is an amazing experience. Thank you.

Since receiving these new Soft Stars, I haven't worn my 'regular' shoes a single time. These are wonderful. Thank you so much.
  135. My husband's and son's favorite shoes

    Rating

After some convincing (on my husband's part, not my son's, since he already loves Soft Stars), I managed to talk my husband into a pair of Rogues. He had been looking for a pair of shoes that he could wear around the house that could also deal with outdoor conditions. He had never worn "barefoot" style shoes and was hesitant to try these because he normally wears an orthotic insole in his other shoes. After a few months of wear, he still loves these and raves about them every day. Really! He's even trying them out on some of our walks around the neighborhood and is contemplating wearing them to work. As for my son, we splurged on a black pair of Rogues for some formal dress occasions over the past couple of months and he wears them around daily because they're so comfortable. He resists wearing them on muddy days, because he doesn't want to "mess them up" when running around at recess. Try these...they're worth the price and they probably will only come off your feet when sleeping!
  136. Fabulous, and no smell when worn barefoot

    Rating

I have been wearing these shoes for months now, and they are fabulous. They are wide enough for my feet and perfectly flat; it's like walking barefoot, only with sole protection and warmth in the winter. The most amazing part about them to me is that although I wear them constantly without socks (with the sheepskin insoles), they do not smell at all. My typically sweaty feet hardly perspire. I love these shoes!!
  137. Great Shoe

These are so much better than I thought they could be. Softstar really found an incredible combination here. Both the suede and sheep skin insole are great. The shoes are comfortable, have great ground feel but also feel light. Not overly warm yet keep feet toasty and dry in winter weather. Just a really awesome shoe!
  139. Awesome!

Soft Star nailed it with these shoes. I have been wearing vibramfivefingers 5fingers occasionally for about 5 years. My new job doesn't care what shoes I wear so now I can be fully committed to by "barefoot" life style. I ordered these for the cooler weather and for casual wear, no running. I wear them to church and everywhere. They got a little wet in the rain but I let them dry for about 30 minutes and they were as good as new. I have been wearing these for two months and they are my go-to shoes. I just ordered the black pair so I can't wait to have another color option so I can be more ninja-esque!

I ordered a pair for my husband, an elementary school teacher who is on his feet all day, and he loves his Rogues. It's been over a year and he wears them a few times a week and wants a second pair so that he can keep a pair at each of the schools he works at. I ordered myself a pair after seeing how happy he was with his. I want to wear these every day. They are like slippers. I'm also a teacher, and I also find these comfortable to wear all day. Poking out from under a pair of pants or nice jeans, the Rogues are sleek and casual-but-not-too-casual. I've had mine for a year and the soles are starting to wear thin, so I'm getting ready for my second pair.
  141. Oh so wonderful!

I am a 49 year old woman who lives in Manhattan. The sidewalks can give even the healthiest feet a pounding, and constantly climbing up and down subway stairs can be torture. I searched hard for a pair of unanimously well-reviewed comfortable shoes, and finally decided to take a chance on the Adult Rogues in Walnut (which look exactly as they do online with regards to color). I received the shoes pretty quickly, put them on, and have not wanted to take them off since. These are, hands down, THE most comfortable shoes I've ever had on my feet. Just for your own reference, I take a size 8 1/2 shoe and my foot is pretty narrow (I was afraid these shoes might be very wide for me). I e-mailed the "elf" and told her that my foot measured 10 1/2" and was pretty narrow. She assured me that the 8U--which would be a size 9 Womens---would fit well. And boy, does it! I cannot describe the comfort. I was also concerned that since the sole was so flexible and fairly thin, that the support might not be great (I have a pair of Minnetonka moccasins and can not only feel the ground, but also the rubber underside of the shoe (not comfortable for any long distance). This is not the case with the Rogues. The sole is a very flexible, but very large footbed (very perfect---not at all "clown shoe-like"). It is both cushy and supportive. I even tricked mine out with a pair of Dr. Scholl's gel-pads for extra dreaminess. Just phenomenal.
  142. Just what I've been looking for

My job has me on my feet all day on concrete floors. The Rogue gives me that extra bit of cushion while preserving a barefoot feel. They are sooo comfortable! Thank you!
  143. AMAZING SHOE

    Rating

THE ROGUE IS - WITHOUT DOUBT - AN EXCEPTIONALLY AMAZING SHOE. COMFORT, STYLE, AND FUNCTION. I AM 6'2" 200# SO I WILL DEFINITELY SEE HOW DURABLE THEY ARE. OF FURTHER NOTE IS ALSO THE INCREDIBLE SERVICE I RECEIVED AT SOFT STAR - INCREDIBLY GRACIOUS AND HELPFUL. I AM A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE - I WILL GIVE THIS GREAT COMPANY ALL OF MY BUSINESS!
  144. Wish they were offered in wide

    Rating

Nicely made. Comfortable. Started wearing Soft Stars because they were able to take care of my wide feet. Wish they offered these in a wide makeup. Not happy with the new sizing implemented in the last year, either. Next time I'll go up a size. If you have feet that fall within the bounds of the mass market, these are great. That's obviously the direction Soft Star has felt the need to go.
  145. Not just for men!

    Rating

I ordered a pair of these because I love my running shoes and wanted something similar that was a bit more water resistant for everyday shoes. As soon as I ordered I started to worry that these would be too manly, and also that the black would be awkwardly too gray, like the picture here. Turns out I didn't need to worry--they are perfect! Although I love the feminine cut of the merry janes, when I worry about puddles, these are just what I was wanting. I don't feel at all like I am wearing my husband's shoes. And black is black.
  146. Comfortable stylish shoe, but lacks durability

    Rating

Out of the box, this shoe is stylish, comfortable, and extremely versatile. I use mine for work, outings around the town, occasional runs, and light duty trails. Unfortunately as with my other Softstars, they do not last as long as I would like. Within two months of purchase the stitching around the toe box had blown out, which I was fortunately able to repair myself. After four months the seam between the sole and toe box started to come apart, which was extremely difficult to repair and now I am left with a gapping hole. I love the fact that Softstars are handmade in the USA, but for the price they should at least last a year.
  147. these are THE SHIZZLE

    Rating

These are AMAZINg shoes!!!! Soft Star Elves, you guys hit it outta the park with these babies. Previously had ramblers, and these are just way more awesome. I don't think the description does them justice. Full neoprene lining is super comfy and makes for a more secure fit with out feeling claustrophobic like a real shoe. Slightly thicker sole is nice too, I do a lot of walking on rocky stuff and I appreciate the extra padding, whilst still being as flexible as the thinner sole. Can't wait for COLORS!!!!
  148. Favorites!

    Rating

These are my favorite Soft Star shoes so far. I have an all smooth black and light brown RunAmocs as well. I've worn the Adult Rogue for 5 months every day (except when the snow got over 2 inches here in Montana). I wear them to work, traveling, at home as evening slippers. Very durable and style more normal for casual work environment. I have a standing desk, and stand all day in them. A bit strange at first outdoors, because they are so comfortable it felt like I was wearing my bedroom slippers outside. Wonderful for travel. Please make them in all black, I'd buy another pair immediately. My feet are different sizes, so custom sizing would also be a plus. Note from Soft Star: Thanks Ken - we will be introducing a black Rogue this fall! Also, please check out our custom sizing page for guidelines - if you have one size a full size different than the other, we can help with this!
  149. Best shoe/slipper ever!

    Rating

I have been going primarily barefoot or wearing fivefingers, but live in New England. I needed something for cold weather - in and out of the house. These fit the bill in such a huge way, that now I am stuck...indoor, or outdoor? I have chose to use them out in the world, but now need a slipper. I have tried the rambler and roo, but nothing can compare to what I have found in the Rogue. However, the price is getting me...I know they will last forever, and are made by hand in the US, but I am struggling to lay down another $125.00 for a slipper. So, if you have a size 12U you are unhappy with, I will gladly take them off your hands (feet). However, I will probably end up adjusting my budget and get another pair - they are THAT great!
  150. Not quite minimal

    Rating

I have been wearing these shoes for one month. After wearing through my pair of ramblers I thought that the Rogue would suit me perfectly. Unfortunately, the rogues are much less comfortable then the ramblers. The presence of a thicker stitch and the lining make it so there is much less room in the Rogues for my toes to spread and for my feet to feel the full range of motion even though the sole is cut the exact same as the Rambler's. Also, the thicker sole makes for much less flexibility from the bottom. The shoes have become more comfortable over the past month, stretching a little. I do not think the rogues will give people the barefoot feeling that is achieved with other Soft Star shoes that are less expensive.
  151. Warm and cozy

    Rating

These are some super comfy shoes. They are so very soft, and when I walk it's like a little foot rub. They have excellent ground feel, and I can tell they give my feet a good work out. They also can pass as shoes in a more casual work environment. The construction quality is top notch. Although, my "Soft Star" tag came out on its own the first day, which is a tad disconcerting. Hopefully, this isn't a reflection of the overall durability of these shoes.
  152. Super Comy

    Rating

These are super comfortable, and sorta look like boots when I wear jeans. I am really impressed. They far exceed my expectations.
  153. Fantastic!

    Rating

Just got these - can't where them enough. So comfortable. Look great with jeans. I was a bit concerned about the neoprene-ish lining before I received them, but they are ridiculously comfortable. I've worn them without socks, with light and heavy socks - works all the way around. Please make 'em in black!
  154. Happy feet

    Comfy, light, warm, good looking.

Customer Questions

The Rogue in regular width fits tighter than most of our other adult shoes and may feel snug at first. While the leather will stretch over time, most customers find it best to order the Rogue in regular width one size larger than their regular Softstar shoe size. The Wide width is roomier and more likely to be true to your normal Softstar size.

The Rogue is only available in Regular and Wide widths.
