How Light is the Sawyer? How Light is the Sawyer?

diagram showing a primal sole with natural rounded toe box versus a traditional shoe with pointy toe box causing long term forefoot deformation

Adult Primal Sawyers are not your average wide toe box casual shoes. They are designed with a minimalist aesthetic and have an innovative Primal sole shape. They are impossibly lightweight and feel seriously soft, making you forget you’re even wearing them! As such, they work great as wide toe box skate shoes.

PRIMAL SOLE SHAPE

This style features an eye-catching Primal sole shape that works with, instead of against, your natural foot physiology. This anatomically correct shape, with an extra wide toe box, is modeled after the way our feet are naturally meant to spread to encourage wildly healthy toe splay. Zero drop Vibram Pyramid soles ensure the stack height is even from heel to toe. The adult Primal Sawyer's flexible materials let feet move freely while building strength and balance. This style works especially well with toe spacers to help restore natural foot shape and function.

LIGHTWEIGHT

Strolling through life in Sawyers is as close to barefoot as you can get, not only because of the shoe’s natural shape, but because it is unbelievably lightweight. Featuring an ultra-light Pyramid sole, the Sawyer weighs just 6.7 ounces, taking the top spot as Softstar’s most lightweight casual shoe.

  • Soft Nubuck* leather uppers.
  • Turned-down leather cuff.
  • Tongue gently padded with BreathOprene for comfort.
  • Ultralight: 6.7 oz (for size 8U; other sizes vary slightly in weight).
  • 6mm zero-drop Vibram Pyramid Sole.
  • Innovative sole shape with extra roomy toe box. If you are curious how the Primal compares to our Standard sole shape, check out our sole comparison tool.
  • Designed and handcrafted in Oregon, USA.

* Nubuck is a top-grain bovine leather that has been lightly buffed on the grain side, or outside, to give a slight nap of short protein fibers for a velvet-like surface. Nubuck is unique because it has the durability of a top-grain leather with a soft touch that feels similar to a suede leather.

You can measure your feet or your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our unisex shoe size chart to find the recommended shoe size.

Measure Your Feet...

sizing-feet-steps
Place bare foot with heel barely touching the wall and longest toe barely touching the flat spine of a book. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the wall to the book.

Once you have the measurement, look for it on the charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size. Contact us if you have questions.

Note: we do not recommend tracing feet because doing so usually gives a larger measurement.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

    Fantastic foot shaped shoes

    Rating

Finally a company that is willing to make shoes that are actually shaped like human feet! My large and wide feet have never been happier. No more squishing my pinky toes and pushing my big toes inwards. I have been unable to find any other brands that allow for my big toe to splay out while also accommodating the width of my midfoot. Softstar has been the answer. I wish I would have discovered them sooner. Now I never want to wear any other shoes. The sawyer is great as a casual everyday shoe that really doesn't look offputting, considering the very natural shape of the toebox. The leather is extremely soft and comfortable, just be careful using them for activities where they may get damaged as they are not very rugged. I like how the leather conformed to the shape of my toes over time, allowing for a more accurate fit. For sizing I measured my feet in cm and selected within the size range provided by softstar, perfect fit. I was on the upper range of width without going over, but wanted to play it safe and got the normal width. Could have gotten the wide, but the normal seemed to stretch out over time without my foot spilling over the sole. Can't wait to buy more from softstar in the future.

    Lots of Love for Softstar!

    Rating

I have duck feet that are 2 different sizes. As I got older, good fitting shoes became a priority of mine. I started ordering custom made shoes from a company in Greece - then I found Softstar. While they aren't 100% custom, the true foot shape and ability to order different sizes are as close to custom as possible. I have tried other 'foot shaped' shoes, and they aren't even close. Softstar Primals are legit! I own 2 pair of Primal Runamocs, and now 2 pair of Sawyers. I wear the Sawyers without socks, and they are insanely comfortable (and quite attractive!) The customer service is also top notch :)

A Shoe for People Who Hate Shoes

    Rating

My feet have been through it. After years of standing in kitchens, running around cities, and generally treating them like indestructible tools, they’ve staged a rebellion. The primary complaint? Bunions. And with them, constant, nagging pain. I’ve been on the endless cycle of buying and returning shoes for years, searching for something—anything—that doesn't feel like a medieval torture device. I used to live in Sanuks. Now, even those feel like a vice. Here’s my constructive rant: 99% of the “barefoot” and “minimalist” shoe market is selling a fantasy. They use words like “natural” and “foot-shaped,” but a quick look at their design tells a different story. They still have tapered toe boxes that squish your feet. They still have subtle toe spring that messes with your mechanics. They’re marketing a solution to people like me while selling a slightly less-bad version of the same old problem. It’s frustrating, and frankly, it’s dishonest. Putting the Primal Sawyers on for the first time was a genuine shock. It’s like moving your feet out of a cramped city studio apartment and onto a sprawling ranch. Suddenly, there’s room to breathe. Room to spread out. The toe box isn't just “wide.” It’s anatomically correct. It’s the widest on the market, and it’s the first one I’ve found that truly respects the natural shape of a human foot. My toes can finally splay out, the way they’re supposed to. If you’re in pain, have bunions, or you’re just done with the hype from shoe companies that don’t get it, this is your next move. The Primal Sawyer is the real deal.

    Change of mind

I didn't like these at first. I seemed to trip too often. I put them away for a few months before trying them again. Now I really like them! The extra width feels so very nice. I'm not tripping anymore. I don't know what made the difference. I might order a second pair.

Changed my Life....Seems like a lot, but real

    Rating

I'm 80-years-old. Endeavor to stay in shape, Regular shoes weren't working. Found barefoot shoes, mostly made in Europe. Then found Softstar and they worked! Next thing you know I own 5 Primal Sawyers, 4 Primal Run Amocs, four Switchbacks, Three Phoenix boots, two Taylor Oxfords, and a pair of Rogues. And I've gifted all my European barefoot shoes to the local thrift shop. I did keep one pair of Lem boots for gardening. And I've gifted three pair of Phoenix boots to lady friends. I chose Softstar after trying the other barefoot brands. I know the town of Philomath from my college days at Oregon State, just down the road. I grew up in the clothing business and easily recognize quality. Still waiting for red Switchback boots!

    good for indoors

I love these, they're so comfy. I did notice that walking even just from my house down the block to the corner store, and back, that these thin soles started to take a harsh beating. For example I've found little tiny bits of gravel lodged in the sort material and ended up with some holes. I now use these at work where I'm on tile floors, and change shoes if I have to go outside. But I love these a lot. The Chelsea boot soles are holding up for me in outdoor use.

    Lightweight, Comfortable, Beautiful

    Rating

Beautiful shoe, very lightweight and comfortable. The leather is incredibly soft. The sole is a little softer/spongier than a standard rubber sole, so it shows wear a little more quickly than other soles I have. The benefit of this kind of sole is that it molds to your feet and provides a tiny bit of cushion while maintaining excellent ground feel. The downside is that it's a little less stable if you're still developing ankle strength and not the best choice for longer bouts of exercise. Also, listen to the sizing recommendations on the website. I have low-volume feet that are 25 cm long, have a narrow heel, but a wide toe splay. When I first got these, they felt just right barefoot but were a little snug with socks. The leather stretched and they now fit well with or without socks. I'm glad I didn't size up in these. I have also gotten tons of compliments on these!

No. The heels of Primal shoes are the same size and width as the standard heel of our other shoes.

Both wide and regular widths of the Primal sole keep the toe box as the widest part of the shoe. The regular width is reduced most along the toe box, slightly less at the middle/instep portion of the shoe and has no change around the heel.

When to Order Wide Width
If you normally wear wide shoes, have a large midfoot/instep or have ordered wide Softstar shoes in the past simply because you wanted more room for toes to spread, then the wide Primal width will likely work very well for you. Wide width is also recommended if your feet are widest at the toes, or if you have been wearing Correct Toes or other toe spacers to restore a natural foot shape.

When to Order Regular Width
If you have a slim midfoot/instep then you may prefer the regular width. Regular width is also recommended for people who do not need the full amount of space in the toe box. For example, if you are new to minimalist shoes and have been wearing tapered/pointy shoes most of your life then your toes likely point inward and you may find the full amount of space from the wide width to be excessive, especially at first. We find this to be the case with most of our female customers, due to the conventional tapered shape of most women's shoes.

Very likely! Our shoe designers are tinkering with new ideas for the Primal sole. At this time it is available for the following shoes:

These are listed on the Primal category page.

Sorry, but no. The leather bullhide sole must be glued to a shoe's midsole, but the Sawyer's design requires it to be sewn directly to a stitchable sole.

Use our Sole Shape Comparison Tool to visualize how the Regular vs. Wide widths differ between many of our adult styles including the Dash, Hawthorne, Merry Jane, Oxford, Phoenix, Solstice, Switchback, Primal Merry Jane, Primal RunAmoc, and Primal Sawyer.
