With occasional cleaning and care these sandals will last a lifetime!

Although they are not made by Softstar, Nativearth footwear purchased through our website is still fully returnable and exchangable according to the terms of our return policy.

"I love these sandals! With most huarache-style sandals you constantly need to readjust the straps to keep them snug, but with Sedona sandals I only had to set them in place once and they held all day." ~Elf Nick

You can measure your feet or your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our unisex shoe size chart to find the recommended shoe size.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

  1. Problem with the Sole Material

    Rating

I love that these shoes are made of natural material, but they do not age well. After the first month or so, the suede sole on these starts to discolor from your footprint in an unappealing way. They don't look clean like the picture except for the first couple wears. None of the pictures on the softstar site really do justice to how their shoes look except for the first few months of wear, which is important to keep in mind if you are willing to invest in something because you think it will be something you will want to wear for at least a few years.

Love them so far. Plenty of room for my wide feet.
  3. Great shoes but the sole died early

    Rating

Absolutely LOVE these sandals, but the sole of the shoe wore through after one and a half seasons. Considering the cost, I needed them to last longer. They've been sent to a cobbler, but repairing them is apparently 1/3 of their original cost.

    What I wanted

    Rating

I have super wide feet, 4E mens wide, and these sandals fit my flinstone feet. I wanted a nice slip on sandal for summer. These are amazing. I use the slip on tie setup, so its a very low profile setup.

    So simple and comfortable!

    Rating

I wanted sandals that could get me through the summer months, and I liked the versatility of these. I laced them in the slip-on style, and half of a lace was plenty for each shoe. I immediately put these to a test during a trip that involved 7-8 miles of city walking each day, and I wore them exclusively for the whole trip just days after they arrived. They needed next to no breaking in! I used one small bandaid on one big toe knuckle, and even that was only necessary for a few days. They were otherwise exceptionally comfortable for long days of walking and standing. In the past week and a bit, I’ve needed to tighten the laces twice. The leather is stretching just enough that the shoes slide around on my feet. I expect the stretching will reach its limit soon. Highly recommended!

Accommodate wide feet, nice grip, beautiful made in USA

    Rating

Beautiful, made in the USA, great barefoot qualities. While I wear a 10 wide in Primal RunAmocs and Sawyers and need a wide toe box, I'm able to wear a 9 in these, though I bought a 10 and prefer those over the 9. I wear them as slide ons with the laces doubled, I couldn't get them to stay tied on my leg single laced. While they look narrow, they are able to accommodate my wide feet because you are able to loosen or tighten the laces so the side tabs form to your feet, not the other way around. I've read about other barefoot style sandals being slippery on wet rock, I've had no issues with grip even while running on large wet slabs of rock at the local metropark that was formerly a quarry.

    What I've been looking for

    Rating

I love these... the ties are a little cumbersome but they are so comfy and way better than similar ones I have. They feel cozy too. In love!

    Rating

I bought both the primal Sawyer shoe and the Sedona sandal and love them both! SUCH comfort for my very wide feet! I did have to replace the heavy cord of a shoe lace of the sandal with regular laces since the cords were abrasive on my feet. But that solved it. And I do wish the Sawyer is available with a leather Earthing soul, instead of the rubberized one. But both that still could happen! And both have their purposes. These shoes & sandals also LOOK GREAT ! Thank you, Soft Shoes ! B.

I love these sandals. While the Roman style is fun, I tied mine in the slip on style, and have extra leather straps for when they wear out. So comfortable, and they look great. I love that they cover my feet in just the right places.

First running sandal that doesn't slide around

    Rating

This is the first sandal that I've actually been able to run in for more than a few miles. It took awhile to get used and build up calluses in the right places. The bottom line is it doesn't slip and slide on my foot like most running sandals. I usually stick to short 3-5 mile runs in these but one time I ran 14 miles. My feet felt fine but my calves did not.
  11. Painful to wear, sadly

    Rating

Well I tried to give them two stars, but for some reason I can't change the star rating on my phone browser. The sandals are well made and I really wanted to love them, but I can't wear these. The thong part between the toes really messes up my feet. I'm not new to minimalist shoes, but I usually wear these cheap "water socks" type shoes that look like tennis but have a really "barely there" feel. In them, my toes can spread and move and do whatever it is toes should do. These sandals somehow put my toes in a weird position making them so uncomfortable. By the time I take them off I have pain that stems from the big toe area and I can tell I walk different. I have to stretch my foot out a lot after to go back to "normal". My biggest regret is not wearing them a bit more a little earlier so I could get a credit towards different shoes. These shoes are also thicker than I prefer, but I was expecting that. If the toe portion didn't mess my feet up, I could deal with the extra cushion. At this point they are useless to me unless I can come up with a way to just get rid of that toe thing and still wear them. After my thirty minutes with them on today, I won't be wearing them again. Sigh.
  12. Alright

    Rating

They are cute but the thong between the toes can be painful when you walk. I ended up doing the double lacing after attempting to do the gladiator look for a while. The laces up the leg were uncomfortable, would constantly fall off and leave marks on my skin, and I just decided I wasnt willing to suffer through that. They are more suited to wearing on short, casual outings where you wont be doing much movement.
  13. My new favorite shoes

    Rating

I've been wearing another brand of Huarache style minimalist sandals for close to a decade and thought I would never switch, but then I saw these and thought I'd give them a try, and they're amazing. I love that they're leather rather than synthetic materials (so soft and less sweat-inducing for the soles of my feet). The closed heels and sides of the toes are also an improvement because I would constantly get gravel caught in my other sandals, but that rarely happens with these. I have the laces tied in the slip on style, and even though they've stretched so they're really loose (and I've been too lazy to tighten them), the shoes are still surprisingly secure on my feet. And the thin, flexible soles are amazing. Not sure how durable they are but if they hold up well then I'd never want to wear another sole. My only complaint is that the suede side of the laces is starting to look a bit grungy after some hiking, so if I ever wanted to wear these in a dressier setting I'd have to change out the laces, but not a big deal at all for me since that rarely happens. My one concern with them was having my little toes pinched since I have extremely wide feet, but so far not an issue. Very glad the weather is warm so I get to wear these for many months ahead.
  14. Wear them all day every day best ever

    Rating

I was hesitant being in my sixties how these would look on me. They are so flattering and even more comfortable. I trekked all over Corfú and although I brought other shoes I just kept reaching for these adorable comfy sandals unless I was walking in water. I did get caught in the rain the other day and it only turned my sandals a richer color of caramel.
  15. Well crafted!I love these sandals.

    Rating

Great materials and texture on the bottom of your soles, really relaxing fit, easy to wear and look amazing. One simple negative aspect is that things might get stuck to easily at the bottom, I use an old tooth brush and soapy water to give them a good scrub at the bottom every week or so as I do with all my shoes. I must say they are a bit hard to clean which is the only downside to this shoe. On the other hand, they are great because you can't slip on anything, your feet feel amazing and it's a timeless design.
  16. These shoes are AmAzInG!!

    Rating

They are so comfortable. The footbed is soft as butter. I liked the doubled up, slip on lacing, which was pretty easy to do with the directions. I tied them just a little too tight, but they stretched enough after wearing them a couple of hours and now they fit absolutely perfect. The sole is so flexible and the shoe so comfortable that these are now competing with my desire to always be barefoot! I literally get excited to put them on.
  17. Love these sandals!!

    Rating

I'm totally in love with these sandals and hope to order the black version next. I opted to lace them as 'slip ons' and discovered I'm a bit dyslexic (took me just one try to get the right shoe laced properly and maybe five times to get the left shoe laced:). I ordered a spare pair of laces, just in case I want to try the ankle lacing. The long laces wrap around my ankle several times but do not restrict my ankle movement. Comfortable, cute and so many compliments.
  18. mixed feelings

    Rating

These sandals are wonderfully soft and very stylish but in order to lace them tightly enough to stay up they reduce circulation to my feet. In addition, the conveyor tread on the bottom picks up every little leaf, piece of dirt and moss and tracks it into the house.
  19. I love these sandals!

    Rating

I have always loved sandals in the summer but since moving to minimalist shoes I have struggled to find anything with adequate flexibility. I bought these as soon as Softstar introduced them. I usually wear a Softstar 6 in moccasins, ballerines, and primal run-amocs. In these I definitely needed a 7 as my toe slightly hung of the end of a 6. The 7's give me about a thumb's width between my toe and the end of the sandal which is great for preventing me from stubbing my toes while hiking. I just got back from a weekend in Acadia National park. I did some of the "moderate hikes" there with lots of bouldering up and down mountains. These sandals were stellar as they are very grippy. I was also able to do some wading in water in them with the kids and they dried out quickly. The ground feel on them is probably comparable to a rambler, but better than the rugged ramblers in my opinion. I keep these as slip on's and I don't tie them up my leg. As a new leather shoe I just need to occasionally snug up the laces and trim off the excess. Not only have they been great outdoors and to slip on on the fly, but they look great with my skirts on the way to church...bonus!
  20. Best Sandals EVER

    Rating

I'm not one to use the long laces and tie them up my calves but I enjoyed the look and decided to go for it because I trust Softstar and appreciate anything barefoot/minimal for footwear. They arrived before a two week trip to Europe and ended up being what I wore the majority of the trip (5-11 miles of walking each day.) I opted to lace them with the low, just around the foot, not up the leg option shown on the website, and it was fantastic. I had no issues with rubbing, blisters or hot spots. I was so comfortable and felt classy; can't beat that with footwear.
  21. love these sandals!

    Rating

my first time wearing minimal footwear, now up to 5 hours of wear time (following your guide) they were comfortable from the first moment I put them on. Having so much fun "off road" on trails and paths and the grippy soles make me feel like I can climb like a mountain goat LOL - ok so I probably can't but I have done some pretty steep hills (up and down) and look forwards to what I hope will be many years with these shoes Using the slip on lacing and getting lots of complements * you do need to remember you have them on when transitioning from outdoors onto a carpeted surface like a doormat - have had a couple of laughs as I felt suddenly velcro'd to the floor So happy with these shoes!
  22. Earthy aesthetic & ground feel

    Rating

I purchased something similar years ago at Folklife because it was handmade one-at-a-time, local, and loved style. It lacked ground feel but I wore the beegeebies out of them. When I received email that Nativearth sandals were available NOW, I ordered asap based on Softstar's endorsement. ....and I agree! The size suggestion is spot on for me (NE8 = Softstar 7U plus I order wide). Currently I have Merry Jane, Solstice Sandal, and Primal RunAmoc. Before wearing SS, I wore leather handmade moccasins, barefoot running sandals, and many Etsy hand crafted minimalist/earthing shoes plus Birkenstocks and old school wood clogs (since 80s). Softstar is a new experience for me & my opinion is the best in style, color, ground feel, price, durability. I hoping for a laced ankle boot that resembles the RunAmoc Primal/Dash. This fall I'll try the Hawthorne Chukka.
  23. So comfortable and stylish!

    Rating

I was surprised how comfortable these were immediately and how secure they feel on my feet. Honestly I got them for the look and wasn't expecting them to be so functional. They feel completely natural on my foot and they are perhaps the most comfortable sandal I've ever had as they move with my foot. They have a small amount of cushioning in the sole which seems like a good balance between comfort while still providing good proprioception / ground feel. The sole is very flexible and if anything, too grippy. It picks up every single piece of dirt, lint, ect... but I feel ultra secure in them and they look like they will be extremely durable. I haven't tried the "slip on" lacing method as it means I would have to cut the laces and I got them for the lace up look. Lacing them up took me a little while on day one, but already a few days in it doesn't take any longer than my tennis shoes and stays put all day. Overall these sandals highly exceeded my expectations! I'm going to get more the black one next and hope you will add more colors.

Customer Questions

Since Sedona sandals are designed and made by Nativearth, we have adapted their sizes to match Softstar's standard sizing scale. This means you will likely find the best fit by using our sizing chart. They should also fit the same as most of our other shoes, unless the other Softstar shoes you own have notices about fitting larger or smaller. For example, if you have ordered our Solstice sandals in the past then you will know that we usually recommend ordering them one size smaller. We do not recommend sizing down like this with Sedona sandals.

Please keep in mind, however, that there is always a little guesswork in sizing feet. Small differences in a person's foot shape can lead to a different sizing fit than someone else with the same measurements. We have refined our sizing scale over the years to show the best fit for most of our customers.

Nativearth has found an innovative way to repurpose materials. The soles for these sandals are cut from the scraps of a conveyor belt manufacturer. These scraps are unused and would otherwise be discarded as waste, so every Sedona sandal is keeping a little more trash out of the landfill.

These soles are 3mm and provide excellent traction and durability without sacrificing groundfeel. Their flexibility is on par with Softstar's thinner soles and will provide ample barefoot-like movement. You can still roll them up just like Softstar shoes!

So is there a downside to these conveyor soles? We've only found one: it can be a challenge to keep the soles clean. Soft debris, such as carpet lint, will stick to the tread on the bottom of your sandals. This is purely cosmetic, though, and should not affect the shoe's traction. We also found an incredibly easy way to clean lint out of the soles: take a sandal in each hand and rub the soles together. The lint will fall right out!

Nativearth makes Sedona sandals in regular and wide widths, but we found that their wide width fits like a regular Softstar width. We also felt their narrow sandals had too small of a toe box for our minimalist standards. For this reason, we only sell wide Nativearth sandals on the Softstar website as a single width option.

If you would like the narrower version of the Sedona sandal then you can order a pair directly from the Nativearth website. We are happy to spread the word about this wonderful small US business and encourage our fans to support them, but if you order directly from Nativearth directly then please keep these points in mind:

  • SIZING: We adapted Nativearth sizes on our website to match Softstar sizes. Nativearth uses their own sizing scale, so the size you order on their website will differ from the sizes on our site. We recommend consulting the sizing guide on Nativearth's website if you order from them directly.
  • DESIGN: The narrower version of the Sedona sandal (from what we sell) is the regular width on the Nativearth site, and it has a slightly different design: the front lacing tabs are stitched to the top sole of the shoe. On the wider version of the sandal, shown above, these tabs extend out from the midsole of the shoe to wrap around the front of the foot from the outside, so the stitches are hidden.
  • RETURNS: Any purchases made directly from Nativearth are subject to their return/exchange policy, not Softstar's. Softstar will not handle any returns or exchanges for products purchased from another website.
  • PRICE: We sell the wider Sedona sandals for the same price as the wide width option on the Nativearth site, but the narrower sandals (Nativearth's regular width) are a different price due to the difference in design.

Nativearth makes their sandals with a layer of neoprene between the suede top layer and the rubber conveyor soles. This layer is very thin and is meant to provide a little extra comfort without sacrificing the minimalist function of the sandal.

Since these sandals are not made at the Softstar workshop, we cannot sell them without this midsole layer of neoprene.

Softstar shoes that are still in brand new condition may be returned for a refund for any reason within 45 days of receipt from any country in the world. This also applies to shoes that you customized with your own unique colors and motifs. We will refund the full cost of the shoes, but customers are responsible for all return shipping charges.

Visit our returns page to learn more.

There are some exceptions to this policy: shoes treated with leather care products, shoes purchased from our biannual clearance sales and shoes made with advanced requests are non-returnable.

Your refund will be applied after the shoes arrive at our shop. If you would like to exchange your shoes for a different size/color/style then you can simply place a new order at your convenience.

Please let us know if you need help with a return. Softstar also has a Happy Feet Guarantee which outlines replacements/returns for workmanship, fit or durability concerns.

We 100% guarantee we will repair or replace any defects in leather, sheepskin or workmanship free of charge within 30 days of receiving your shoes. This does not cover wear and tear or misuse on behalf of the consumer. Wear and tear is damage that naturally and inevitably occurs as a result of normal use.

We stand by our product and will send you a return shipping label and either repair or replace your shoes if they fail for durability as described below:

  • Peeling of leather finish or print within the first 6 weeks, excluding our shiny leathers which naturally scuff and/or develop patina appearance with normal wear.
  • Stitching defects within first 3 months.
  • Heel support detachment within 3 months.
  • Innersole bunching, coming loose or developing bald spot within 3 months.
  • Sole delamination within 3 months.
  • Leather inlays coming loose within 6 months.
  • Non-functional closures (VelcroTM, buckles, elastic failures, zippers) within 12 months.
