HEALTHY POSTURAL ALIGNMENT

Traditional dress shoes are typically constricting, prohibiting your feet to be able to move in their full range of motion. Additionally, most feature a slight heel, which over time puts added strain onto your body and wreaks havoc on your posture. High heels are not the only shoes we consider heels, as even a slight heel-to-toe drop can have the same negative effects. When elevated heels and constriction are paired together, it's the perfect recipe for long-term foot and overall health issues. Designed with a zero-drop sole, your body will have the ability to remain in natural, healthy alignment.

Traditional oxford vs natural posture

WIDE TOE BOX

The Oxford features a foot-friendly design with a toe box that is much more spacious than your typical dress shoes. The regular width is roomy for most, or you can select the Wide width—a hybrid between our standard and primal sole shapes, allowing for even more toe space!

Regular vs hybrid wide width

OXFORD STYLING

Traditional Oxford styling refers to a specific upper vamp pattern where the eyelets are concealed under the vamp, and the foot opening comes to a "V" in a clean manner. This creates a sharp look which elevates Oxfords above the Derby or Blucher patterns used on simpler dress shoes. Beyond the concealed eyelet requirement, there are a lot of different pattern puzzles that can be combined to make stylish versions of the classic Oxford. Tuxedo cap toe is considered the most formal version as you can see in the minimal, straight line of our Hamilton Oxfords (right). Wingtips are considered to be more fun, as evidenced in our Taylor Oxfords (left), and are appropriate for business casual events or everyday use.Taylor vs Hamilton Toe Box

Shoe manufacturers sometimes add broguing (patterns of decorative holes) on various parts of the upper. Our Rigel with Orion Motif version of the Taylor Oxford was developed to delight astronomers as it features a brogue pattern inspired by the Orion constellation. Rigel is a blue supergiant and it's Orion's brightest star.

You can measure your feet or your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our unisex shoe size chart to find the recommended shoe size.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

    I like it

    Rating

I bought these right after Softstar switched to new Vibram Coffee Bean sole. I must say that I like it! Another reviewer had criticized the appearance of the old sole. That shouldn't be a problem now. These shoes look great and free great. The wide size looks wide because it is wide, but they don't have the clownish look of the wide Primal Sawyer. And- I don't think they will make me trip the way the sawyers do. (If I review the Sawyer, it won't get five stars...) These are my first dress shoes from Softstar. I used to wear casual Softstars to work. I switched to Altra when I took a job that required walking on cement all day. After retirement, I came back to Softstar because I wanted more wiggle room. I learned that my favorite shoes had been discontinued or "improved". The Rogue seems to be a replacement for the Adult Rambler. The Rogue is too small for my 13W feet. So, I'm rather disappointed with the current selection of Softstar casual shoes. I tried some competing companies, but most don't offer a 13W. (I haven't tried the Chukka yet. That will be the next shoe I try. This is turning into an expensive quest.) I do like the Oxford dress shoe.

    excellent

I have a lot of shoes. Ive loved the primal runamocs until they changed the sizing. Now 11 hurt my toes on hike and just feels too snug, looks like a 12 will be floppy long. basically feels like softstar just radically reduced toe room in the primal runamocs. Not the dress oxford. Worn for a few months now, does not crush toes. look nice. Best dress shoe barefoot i have now, better than vivo barefoots (were really expensive and the carets (narrow).
  3. Great dressy shoes

    Rating

In my opinion these are one of the best looking and most comfy smart casual shoes in the barefoot market. The espresso color is very versatile and the overall design is great. They have the right balance of width (regular version); they do not look goofy at all and still remain very anatomical. I do have a couple of suggestions. The outsole could definitely be more refined, as it looks a bit too rough compared to the very nice uppers. And the tongue is a bit too short, it barely covers the upper end of the laces and having a longer one will give the shoe a more balanced look.

    A great shoe

    Rating

As the ballerines don't fit my foot shape well I find these shoes to be the best office friendly softstar shoes so far. The blue colour with orion motif is gorgeous and I'm tempted to get the black or raven version of the Oxfords now. Very happy with my purchase!
  5. high quality, beautiful shoe

    Rating

I got the Rigel, a beautiful blue gray blue color. I love these shoes and wear them just about every day. The quality craftmanship on these shoes is amazing and makes me feel like a million bucks when I wear them. I bought these in 7 wide and would have to agree with what some others have said that they are a tad bit clownish with the wingtip detailing. The regular width probably looks dressier since it doesn't flare out at so much the toe. I previously lived in the Primal Merry Jane in 7U, so I wasn't sure if the regular width would be wide enough. I'm very pleased with the 7 wide in this style. I'm not fancy and don't work in a formal place, so the slight goofiness doesn't bother me. In fact, I love it! They are unique in a mass-produced fast-fashion world. They are mostly comfortable, though I find the soles of my feet hurt a little after a few hours and I'm not sure why. I might try one of the wool inserts. In any case, there is plenty of room for my toes, and the heel cup is narrow enough to keep my heels from slipping out. As others have said, this shoe is very tall at the instep. It is taller than I need it to be, but it isn't overly floppy. I probably have mid-volume feet, since I can comfortably wear the primal merry janes (regular width) and the wide taylors. I called Softstar for sizing advice, which I highly recommend if you aren't sure how this shoe compares to other models you might have. They have very friendly, knowledgeable elves answering the phone!

    Great shoe, went with standard

    Rating

Hey everyone, I ordered both the Primal and the Regular of these shoes to compare. I am an 100% barefoot shoe wear-er, and was hyped to see that Softstart had come out with a decent pair of shoes that I could wear to work and formal occasions. I liked the fit of the Primal better, but IMO they looked just too dang goofy to wear to work/a wedding. I think the brogue details accentuate the wideness. Although the standard width is a bit more narrow than I've grown accustomed too (because again, I only wear 100% barefoot shoes), they are the ones I stuck with. And all that being said, they are much more comfortable than the formal, non-barefoot shoes I was using before.

I wanted to love these ...

    Rating

The Rigel with Orion is a beautiful shoe! Alas, the sole used on these is far too heavy and stiff. I could not get them to bend where the foot bends, only where the sole narrows to the arch. And, the weight of the sole causes the shoe to flop (heavily) around on my foot. I think this could have been a real hit (for me, at least) with the fluffy Geo sole used on the Hawthorne chukkas.

Lovely, lightweight, perfect travel shoe for dressing up

    Rating

I bought these for my teen. He likes to dress up a bit more than an average kid (chose oxford shirts over polo shirts daily while attending a prep school with collared shirt dress code), but he finds sneakers more comfortable than fancy shoes most of the time. When we travel, he likes to wear bright madras jackets and seersucker for going out to dinner; normal teen shoes simply don't look great with those outfits. These are perfect for travel, because they appear like formal shoes while weighing less and packing smaller, yet they still feel quite comfortable on his feet. The Orion pattern is truly special. We're a nerdy family (Dad is a scientist), and the star detail sold me on these expensive shoes for a kid who may outgrow them. Here's hoping his feet are done expanding like the universe! :)
  9. Most ergonomically, correct Oxford, dress shoe

    Rating

These shoes are outstanding, most Anatomical, & ergonomically correct, most bio~mechanically correct, spacious forefoot-oblique design to fit a range of feet of human beings foot. end-step, ankle and toe-box area. (maybe high or low depending on your foot.) my foot is exactly 11-inches. I purchase size 12 primal. and using a primal wool-insert that goes in the switchback boot. I have just over an 1/2 half an-inch of space.(the real space would be about 2/16 more than a half an inch.(internally as the foot sits in the shoe laced-up and properly secured for walking.(in other words near perfect fit for me.)

    Not Primals

    Rating

These shoes look great and have a more cushioned sole than the Runamocs. Compared to the primal shoes there is extra width for the big toe and less small toe space which is the opposite of my needs. A size up is required to accommodate my other toes. I purchased these in hopes of having a primal friendly fit. I have mountain toes, my big toe is my third longest toe. I also am between 4E and 6E width. I have enjoyed Primal Runamocs for the last month as my everyday all the time shoe. My big toe does rub on the top of my Runamocs, however the leather has enough give to where it does not cause any discomfort. These oxfords have a much stiffer leather. After an hour or so of casual wear my feet were hot and began to sweat (no sweat in my Runamocs ever, even here in San Diego). Also, at this point my big toe was getting sore from rubbing against the top of the shoe. Soon after a crease formed on both shoes right on my big toenail causing a pinching sensation with every step. I hope more Primal shoes become available. The "Primal friendly" shoes are just not a fit for me and my foot shape.
  11. No break in

    Rating

Good Morning! I wanted to drop a note to thank you for making such a wonderful pair of shoes (several actually)! I have a pair of Roo moccasins and a discontinued pair of slip on/rubber soled shoes and I love them! I recently purchased a pair of the Oxfords and upon receipt I decided to break them in on a trip to NYC. This was not an easy decision as I knew we'd be walking for hours and hours, miles and miles on concrete surfaces and admittedly, my experience in similar conditions with other shoes (from your competitors) has left my feet/body worn out at the end of the day, feet achy the next morning. However, I wore my new Oxfords on the flight to NYC and then approximately 15 straight hours on our first day in NYC. We covered over 12 miles of hard walking through the city and at the end of the day I realized I hadn't even thought of my feet other than to take a picture of the shoes and send to a Softstar friend of mine. In fact, these shoes made such an impression I'm writing this to you from my hotel on the morning after the aforementioned first day in NYC! Just ordered a second pair in black! Thank you again for doing such a wonderful job at what you do, the craftsmanship is truly that, the quality is outstanding the comfort amazing. You have a fan an unofficial ambassador! Kindly, Austen
  12. My beautiful wide wingtip Clown Shoes!!!!

    Rating

I am a 40, 10.1cm at forefoot and a 26cm instep circumference. Primal 9U WIDE is my closed-shoe salvation. These are beautiful leather; the most ELEGANT SoftStar in my collection, and the Wide oxford is very nearly Primal. These shoes are very deep, which is a HUGE gift to "high volume" tall & wide feet like mine. They lace neatly with room for a thin sock - even on my "Adult toddler" feet. I need to wear them more; these came stuffed with paper to make them "tall." I expect that after I wear them a bit they will settle and my little toes will feel the love too. The profile of these is "clown shoe" - which is lovely because they DON'T HURT, but the lineage is elegant dress shoe. This is a winner, but I can't wait for more color options. (Glowing black cherry anyone?) Drypointes or cedar shoe trees will extend the life of these beauties.
  13. Comfortable

    Rating

I got early access and went for the blue one to match my blue blazer. I'm used to dress shoes being stiff, so the leather is softer than I expected. My first reaction when putting them on was surprise at how comfortable they were. Definitely a shoe I can wear all day.
  14. Early Review - Orion

    Rating

I received an early evaluation pair in blue color with the gold orion embellishment- they are dressy but not flashy. Very beautiful, many compliments, and super comfy with no break in. I received both a size 9U regular and wide width, the regular was roomy for me - the wide were too wide and I sent those back. The gold detail really is cool and makes them very unique. I wish the sole was thicker as I personally like to feel taller, but they feel better I thought possible for a classic pair of dress shoes. I could wear every day but won't as I want to keep these a long time.
  15. The Dress Shoe I have been waiting for

    Rating

I have always loved Softstar shoes for their glove like, barefoot fit and quality, but I never felt they had formal enough options for me until now. I work in a pretty dressy "business casual" office where I wear dress pants and all the minimal dress shoes I've tried either look cheap or look too much like tennis-shoes. I also tried Carets which had 3 extra inches of length in the front... they looked good if you don't mind sacrificing your natural gait to push through the abnormally long soles. I couldn't wear them after a few weeks. I work with clients a lot, and looking sharp is important to me. Up until now, I've had to sacrifice my feet to get the look I want. Softstar delivered my dream dress shoe. It is light, roomy and comfortable and formal. Substational looking with great leather and construction (NOT a tennis shoe construction) and it moves with my foot like a glove. I was disappointed at first it did not have a heel... but after one day was glad they put function first - I normally change out of my shoes before my commute home - but forgot to when wearing these - they are seriously the most comfortable dress shoes you can imagine, and breathable, to boot. I have received multiple compliments from co-workers, and have had them shined after a few months and they are even brighter now than before. I would not pair these with a tuxedo (still want a heel for that) - but they are great for all my current formal needs. Thanks Softstar!

We 100% guarantee we will repair or replace any defects in leather, sheepskin or workmanship free of charge within 30 days of receiving your shoes. This does not cover wear and tear or misuse on behalf of the consumer. Wear and tear is damage that naturally and inevitably occurs as a result of normal use.

We stand by our product and will send you a return shipping label and either repair or replace your shoes if they fail for durability as described below:

  • Peeling of leather finish or print within the first 6 weeks, excluding our shiny leathers which naturally scuff and/or develop patina appearance with normal wear.
  • Stitching defects within first 3 months.
  • Heel support detachment within 3 months.
  • Innersole bunching, coming loose or developing bald spot within 3 months.
  • Sole delamination within 3 months.
  • Leather inlays coming loose within 6 months.
  • Non-functional closures (VelcroTM, buckles, elastic failures, zippers) within 12 months.

It depends on what you mean...

If you want one of our existing shoe styles made with your own unique color combinations and motifs, then YES! You can choose these custom options for any style that shows the swirly "CUSTOMIZABLE" rainbow icon in the upper right corner. When you are selecting colors for these shoes you will see a "Customize Your Colors" button below our collection color options.

This is part of our everyday fun to see what creations you design as we handcraft each pair for you here in our Oregon workshop. These custom shoes are also fully returnable according to the terms of our return policy.

If you are looking for customization beyond the shoe shoe designs, colors, or sizes available on our website then we do offer limited services for special requests. Special requests such as longer straps, special motif colors, split sizes or single pairs can often be done. Click here for more details.

All Softstar shoes are 100% designed and handcrafted at our workshop in Philomath, Oregon, USA. We don't outsource any of our manufacturing processes, but instead do it all under one roof. All of our order fulfillment and shipping happens directly from our workshop, too. For more information and to see how our shoes are made, visit this page.
