We love innovation. But in some cases, the best way to move forward is to take a step back. Roo soft sole moccasins represent just that! Made with natural materials that are high in quality and few in number, these moccasin shoes are built to let you fully experience the world through which you move.

Smooth full grain leather uppers wrap your foot in rich, breathable leather. The traditional suede soles on these soft sole moccasins are flexible and soft, well-suited to both indoor and dry outdoor use. Suede is naturally durable and initially non-skid, wearing into a smoother, moisture-resistant surface over time. Don’t worry, you can always restore the soles’ non-skid properties by gently rubbing the sole with a wire brush!

Inside these moccasin shoes, luxurious sheepskin insoles are sewn-in to embrace your feet and keep them protected, dry, and oh-so-comfortable. Genuine sheepskin is nature's heat regulator—it keeps feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter! Inner elastic hugs the ankle for a secure fit that’s easy on, easy off… that is, if you ever decide to take off these irresistible leather moccasin shoes!

  • Genuine sheepskin insoles keep feet dry in summer & warm in winter while providing comfort and cushioning
  • These soft sole moccasins are meant to be worn indoors, but they are OK for dry outdoor conditions
  • Elastic ankle closure—easy on and off
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Handcrafted in USA from premium, responsibly-sourced leathers

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

    Perfect indoor shoe

    Rating

I purchased my Roo moccasins back in May, but I don't wear a slipper/house shoe very often during the warmer months. So, now that I've gotten through part of the winter and just wore them almost every day during the holiday break, I'd like to share how comfortable these are! I wear my Roo moccasins mostly indoors. I'm sure they're fine outdoors and many people use them for grounding, but I prefer to keep the soft soles clean and dry. I love how soft and flexible the leather is on the outside. They breathe, but you don't feel any drafts at all. The inside is the sheepskin, which is warm and breathable. My feet don't get cold, and I've also been pleasantly surprised by the fact that they barely ever sweat in them, either. Sizing seems very true, and because the structure isn't rigid, they accommodate any foot shape.

Ordered these with the elk leather and I LOVE them!! They took a little getting used to, as they have zero support and felt a little floppy at first, but now that I am used to them, I look forward to wearing them every day and am sad to take them off. I have a few Softstar shoes, and these are my ultimate favorites. I only wear them in my chilly house at this point but could imagine getting another pair at some point to keep for indoor wear, and transition to wearing these out and about a bit more.

    Happy customer

    Rating

I need wide shoes so I was happy to see that these had a wide option now. However, they are not as wide as the dash runamoc so I still end up walking on the side of the moccasin a bit. But overall they work. I would like to see them made a bit wider.

    Wear-ever!

    Rating

Our family has had a number of these shoes over the years. Yes, they're cozy, Yes, they make great indoor slippers. Sure, you can pull them on easily for morning coffee on the deck, with socks or without. AND... we've also worn them: walking the dog, driving the car, quick bike commutes, long airplane rides, camping, outside fireside from shoulder season to sub-freezing temperatures, as slippers at the office (with long pants they almost pass as a casual boot to anyone not looking too closely) and a impromptu games in the backyard. AND... with a heaping helping of some kind of wax-based proofing on the bottom once a year or so (I use a home brew of beeswax and hard oils like coconut) you can also wear them all winter outside too. I've worn them on light/short hikes under a couple of hours, often in snow. One memorable snowy day I insisted on wearing these and we found parts of the trail were buried in a good inch or more of wet slush. Everyone's shoes wetted out that day, including those wearing conventional gore-tex hikers. These? They worked just fine and my feet were no wetter (eventually water worked in through the seams... but not the soles!) and arguably warmer with the sheepskin lining. The only thing to watch is that depending on how and how recently you waxed them, they can get quite slippery in icy or frosty conditions, including grass that is wet or frosted. Are there more practical options out there, including Softstar's own hiking boots? Absolutely. But to me, so worth as an option to not be locked into boots sometimes and get that barefoot walking feeling. On pavement or any other textured surface they make surprisingly good walking shoes!

House shoes that provide good value

    Rating

I bought a pair of adult Roos in the dark elk leather. I only wear them indoors around the house, though I think they are durable enough for dry outdoor wear. They’re very comfortable, more than any other house shoe I’ve worn. The sheepskin insole is particularly comfortable and of a better grade than any similar insole I have seen. The ground feel is excellent. I was able to do a light cleaning and conditioning of the mocs with the leather amore product, also sold by Softstar. It darkened the color of the leather slightly but cleaned it up very nicely and adds some water droplet/dirt protection. Overall these mocs are great. I like the feel and the softness of the elk leather; it is noticeably different from off-the-shelf shoe leather. I bought these on sale and found them to be good value for money, given the excellent comfort and the high grade of materials.

These are my house shoes and they are the most comfortable slipper ever. As with all Softstar products, the craftsmanship is exceptional. The leather is sublimely supple and the lining, ever so soft and cozy. You won’t be disappointed!

    Heaven on my feet

    Rating

I am a confirmed SoftStar lover. These are my fifth pair of SoftStar shoes and I love them all (to the point that I've run out of superlatives when raving about them to friends). These mocs will be my work from home/lounge at home indoor shoes. They feel like the best house slippers I've ever had yet I can wear them outside in dry conditions to cross the yard or sit on the porch or toss a ball for the dog. They're perfect for chilly floors and they're "dressed up" enough that I don't have to put on something else if friends drop by when I'm unwinding at home. So glad I treated myself to these special shoes. Thanks, Elves!

    10 Year Review

    Rating

I have one pair of soft star Mocs. One. Bought in 2013. This is the same basic mic so I figured I would write the review here. Mine hav ethe grippy sole which I believe they discontinued but other than that should be the exact same. Well what can I say. I have had these for 10 years. I don’t wear them out and about too much but I wear them on short errands and around the house every single day. I would hesitate to wear them out and have. But just wanted to point out how I wear them. They have worn beautifully. They look better than when they were brand new with rubbed places and wear marks and patina and smooth. The soles have stayed true. The most surprising aspect is the sheepskin inner is still going strong. Definitely worn. Definitely down to the leather in some places but absolutely amazing how they have held up. The only maintenance I ever do is probably once a year I condition the leather with quality oil/conditioner. Same as I use for my cowboy boots. All that said, I can’t remember how much these were in 2013. I want to say $80 or so. Doesn’t matter because if these were $150 it would be worth it. These will undoubtedly last me another 10 years from what I can tell. Sheepskin will probably be gone by then but the construction of this mic will hold up and no doubt they are worth the money.

This shoe is like a warm glove. Highly recommended

    Rating

From the first second of slipping this on I immediately felt it's super comfortable. Ground feel on these is amazing and they are highly flexible. i think the only thing that might come close are Wildling shoes, but these are more of a semi-rigid sock than a shoe. So flexible and comfortable. The only possible downside is that they don't seem to be fit for heavy outdoor use, so I'm probably gonna use them as slippers at the office.

Customer Questions

Softstar moccasins are beloved for their genuine sheepskin soles and ultra-comfortable feel. They have a free form nature that allows them to fit many different sizes and shapes of feet with ease, so the best size for you may vary depending on whether you prefer a snugger fit or a looser fit.

As a general rule of thumb, if you feel your toes pressed against the front seam of the shoe then the length is probably too short and a larger size is recommended. If you have more than a thumb's width of space between the end of your toes and the front seam (with your heel all the way back in the moccasin) then the length is probably too long and a smaller size is recommended. If any part of the moccasin feels slightly too snug on your foot then it will likely stretch out on it's own and loosen up as you break-in the shoe. With a little wear, you will notice the moccasins will naturally stretch out to mimic the shape of your feet. You can also speed up this process by "working" parts of the leather over the end of a broom handle to immediately stretch it out

When you receive a new pair of moccasins, you might find it is hard to tell apart the right from the left. The size tags will be on your inner ankles, so if you hold the left moccasin on the left and the right moccasin on the right then the tags should be next to each other. Keep in mind that your new shoes will stretch to take the shape of your feet as you break them in and the left and right shoes will eventually look more distinct.

We occasionally hear this question from customers who worry that feeling the seams will annoy them. In our experience, 99% of these customers no longer notice the seams after a day or two of wear. This is partly because it is very easy to get used to the seams and party because they become "looser" as the moccasins break-in.

Softstar shoes that are still in brand new condition may be returned for a refund for any reason within 45 days of receipt from any country in the world.
