Primal FAQ

Since the Primal RunAmoc has such a unique shape, we receive many questions about its design and fit. Here are some of the most common concerns we encounter:

Should I order the same size in a Primal RunAmoc as I do for a Dash RunAmoc?

Most likely, yes. We strive to keep sizing as consistent as possible across all styles and the length of the Primal sole is the same length as our other sole shape. The majority of our testers of the Primal RunAmoc wore the same size as they wear in our Dash RunAmoc, but a small percentage preferred one size smaller. Variations with the way the uppers are designed along with subtle differences in an individual’s foot shape can change how a shoe feels, plus many people have different preferences for how snug or loose they prefer a shoe to fit. We recommend trying the same size you wear for Dash RunAmocs and rest assured that we offer an easy return/exchange process if needed.

I see you have regular, wide and narrow for other styles. What width is the Primal? How wide is it? Can you tell me if it is wide enough for my feet?

The Primal is available in Regular and Narrow widths.

The width of the Primal toe box is much wider than any other shoes we make, but the uppers and overall fit of the shoe are designed to fit snugly at your midfoot and heel. We have found that a Regular width Primal generally fits well if you order Regular or Wide in other Softstar shoes. In addition, if you have ordered wide Softstar shoes in the past simply because you wanted more room for toes to spread, then our regular width Primal RunAmoc will likely work very well for you. If you have a slim midfoot, you may prefer the Narrow width. If you have additional questions, you are always welcome to contact our customer service elves for assistance!

Is the shoe also wider in the heel?

Can I get the toe cap on other shoes?

No. The unique Primal toe cap is only available on our Primal shoe.

Will the Primal sole shape be offered on more shoe styles?

Possibly. Currently this sole shape is only available for the Primal RunAmoc, but our designers are already testing it with some of our other existing styles. Depending on customer response to this shoe, we may add additional styles with this sole shape in 2018.

How does the shape of the Primal RunAmoc change between regular and narrow widths?

Both regular and narrow widths of the Primal RunAmoc keep the toe box as the widest part of the shoe. The narrow width is reduced most along the toe box, slightly less at the middle/instep portion of the shoe and has no change around the heel. Narrow width is recommended for people who do not need the full amount of space in the toe box. For example, if you are new to minimalist shoes and are trying to restore your feet to their natural shape after years of wearing tapered shoes, then the full amount of space from the regular width may seem excessive, especially at first. This diagram shows how the regular and narrow width compare to each other:

Customer Reviews

Love them Review by Peter
I have very wide feet (for other softstar shoes I would basically need a size 13 width and size 10 length to give an idea). I've tried to find a shoe that fits my feet for years with very limited success. When I saw the announcement for this shoe I ordered a pair immediately and was not disappointed. Overall I'm extremely happy with them and my feet love them. I generally wear them everyday to work and they are comfortable for the entire day. Only minor complaint is that the heel is little tight on my feet and I can feel the seams (maybe I have wide heels?), but definitely not a deal breaker. The quality is also excellent.

I look forward to a leather soled version with great anticipation (which I was told should be coming in spring 2018 ). A thinner rubber sole would be a nice option, too.

Highly recommend to anyone especially if you have wide feet. I hope more shoes like this are added to the lineup.

Also, I must mention that Soft Star customer service is top notch and they have always answered my questions and worked tirelessly to find a shoe that fit well prior to these being released (custom sizing was the only option). Thank you, and thanks for this great shoe! (Posted on 3/29/18)
Best shoes ever. Review by DMiz
So I’ll just start by saying that these shoes are the best things I’ve ever had on my feet. I have a 14-15 size...extremely wide feet that “friends” have called paddles. I’ve obviously have problems with footwear my whole life. Wearing regular shoes for the majority of my life cramped my toes and led to pain and misshapen (triangle) toe shape. I got to the point where I could find no shoes that I could wear without pain, much less run/hike in for extended times.

About a year and a half ago, I started wearing the largest minimalist shoes I could find. Even though these shoes were still restrictive to my toe splay, a lot of my foot problems started improving. My foot strength had increased more than I ever thought was possible.

I was able to find a pair of minimalist trail runners that I wore out during this process. Even though those shoes didn’t fit me properly, i need another pair, and those shoes (another brand) were discontinued. I tried a couple of other of the biggest widest shoes I could find, but returned them immediately.

I found Softstar by searching for something I didn’t think existed, a company that made shoes that they care about and understood that feet are different. It just so happened that the Primal RunAmocs had just been released and the first time I saw/read about them, they gave me hope.

The price point seemed high to me, but then I realized that a shoe that may actually fit my foot would be worth it. I emailed the Elves servers times with questions about sizing (length and width) and we determined that a size 14 would likely be the best size. I contemplated waiting until the wise version of these shoes were released, but the Elves thought these may work out fine. They were more than right.

These shoes are the absolute best shoes I’ve owned. When they arrived, yes they looked a bit strange, but as soon as I put them on, I understood . The fit was great and for the first time EVER my toes actually had room...ever.

Sure some people have a reaction to the shoe when they see it for the first time, but I can tell you that it gets them thinking about why they keep their feet cramped up. My family/coworkers got used to them fast as I rarely take them off unless I’m barefoot etc.

I run on trails in these and love it. It’s amazing that the shoe has shaped to my foot and allows my foot to be in the shape it was meant to be. They are like a part of my foot.

I’ve had these shoes for about 2 months now and am more than pleased with the construction. The soft leather is amazing and the leather footbed is great. I typically wear socks in them but have worn them sock free with no issues. The soles are great and I have had plenty of grip. Even though worn the soles down some in the forefoot area the most, then the heel and side, I’m pretty sure I can get several more months out of the soles. Once the soles wear out, I plan to see if the Elves can replace (which I don’t think they do) or if a local cobbler can put new soles on. If not, I’ll be buying a new pair, no question. I sincerely hope that Softstar doesn’t stop making this Primal RunAmoc design. Please, please, please, don’t take away the width of the toe box., and please don’t take away the large sizes. I’m not saying these shoes changed my entire life, just the quality of it.

Thanks again-

sizing is off, some improvements needed Review by Shells
Softstar sizing can be confusing, but I wear 7U in Portlander (so sad they are no longer made), rogue and moc3.
Softstar advised me to try the primal runamoc in 6U, but sadly the length was too small.
Also, the heel was not constructed the was it is on the portlander (too soft) and it should be more structured like the Portlander. (Posted on 1/17/18)
Shoe doesn't fit well in the heel... Review by Russell
I love RunAmocs and have run in RunAmocs, but this new shoe (my 4th purchase!) dedicated to running seems a step backwards! The heel is loose and slides around unless I really cinch them up. And the upper doesn't seem to breathe very well- I personally much prefer the perforated uppers that made my love RunAmocs for the last few years.

I was hesitant to buy them because they did not come in the 3 mm sole thickness that I know and love, but the truth is, the thicker sole (while offering me no advantage) feels fine when I run, and might even have advantages on a rocky trail. (Posted on 1/3/18)
on the right track but sent the current version back Review by Karin
I decided to order the gray version of these new shoes. I have extremely wide feet including a high instep and a sensitive bunion. I could not believe that a regular width would fit me, but the Elves said I should try them and see. They almost worked. Honestly if I had liked the color, I might have kept them to see if the fit would work out. But the gray was just too dull for me. I'm going to wait for a DYO version in wide next spring and try again. (Posted on 12/12/17)
Awesome Wiggle Room for Toes Review by Diane
Love that my toes are not crowded, and that my feet can traipse lightly across carpet, tile, grass and pavement! The flexible sole allows my foot to step naturally. The upcycled toe cap is somewhat bothersome. There is a bump where it's fastened to the leather that irritates some of my toes. I hope a re-design will eliminate that toe cap. (Posted on 12/7/17)
They call me - "duck boy" Review by Ian
I've had these for a few weeks now. Very comfortable, great to run in and I like the colour scheme. Most comments I've received from others are about the toe box. It's so wide, they look funny. Other reviewers say clown boots, I say duck feet. I was worried it may be a trip hazard but no instances yet. Despite the weird look, my toes do want to stretch to fill them out! (Posted on 12/6/17)
Finally, shoes that fit my feet! Review by Larissa
I love how these shoes are wide enough for my toes, but narrow enough for my heels. My feet are shaped like feet, not shoes! I've gotten tons of positive attention for them, though I do think they look a little clown-like from the top. From the sides and front though they are super-cute.

Things I would change: I'd shave about 1/4" off the upper, inner edge of the big toe area. I don't mind the width but the way that portion sticks out is what makes them look clowny. I'd also love to have more sole thickness options and the option of a sheepskin liner. I find the soles just thick enough for city walking, but not great for hours and hours of it. Otherwise, I love these shoes and I'm so glad to have a shoe I can wear when it's too cold for sandals. (Posted on 11/30/17)
Fantastik & worth the wait! Review by Allyndreth
I have been awaiting these shoes for 3+ years now. These are the ONLY shoe that fits my feet! That they are light, comfortable, and look good are just icing on the cake!!!!! As an added bonus, I can stop purchasing shoes 2-3 sizes too large and in men's sizes to just try to get something to work out for me. Thank you Softstar Elves. (Posted on 11/28/17)
A good start Review by Jennifer
I've been wearing soft star shoes for many years but hadn't found a great trail running shoe/cross training shoe. This is the closest. Although the toe box is ridiculously wide, making them aesthically absurd, they have not tripped me up yet after three 5+ mile runs, double unders, burpees, and moderate height jumping. I truly appreciate the ability for my toes to move unfettered but the extra space in the toe box worries me when it comes to high agility movements. With some refinement, and perhaps different sizing for men and women, this shoe could be perfect. (Posted on 11/20/17)
Get these! Review by Keith
Usual Softstar quality. However, the primal toe box is completely awesome! It it the most anatomically correct toe box of all the minimalist show brands I wear; and, I wear alot of different brands. I normally have to size up in Softstars so my toes don't have to get squeezed together. But, that leaves the shoe long and causes some occasional catching. These I can size normally and have happy feet! I hope the Elves decide to bring this toe box to all models or allow customization to this model. (Posted on 11/8/17)
Finally, a shoe that fits. Review by Chris
TL;DR - Super wide feet? No problem. These shoes are the only shoes I have ever owned that fit my feet, and the quality and craftsmanship is second to none.

Background: I have an extremely wide foot. My toes are the widest part of my foot, and I'm also more or less flat footed. Having to buy shoes has always been an issue. The most common commentary was "He's better suited to wearing the box than the shoe". I visited a big brand name shoe company and had them order me a 6E width in a half size too large, and it still didn't fit. I've been limited to buying shoes 2 sizes too large just to keep things from being painful.

Verdict: Primal changed everything. I was nervous about getting my actual size. I shouldn't have been. I think I have less toe room than most will have, but for the first time in my life, I have shoes that fit. As an added bonus, these are the highest quality shoes I have ever owned. The leather is superb and needed no break in. The day after they arrived, I spent 12 hours on my feet the in mixed terrain. I was in awe by the end of the day. I couldn't believe I wasn't itching to take off my shoes. I can't give any higher praise to a pair of shoes than to say I actually love wearing them.

Note from the Elves: Awwwwhhh!! That is terrific Chris - thanks for sharing! We are planning on adding Wide" and "Narrow" widths next year.

Room to spread your toes, yet pleasingly secure Review by Greg
Secure from the heel through the midfoot, and then fanning out generously for the forefoot and toes, these shoes fit astonishingly well.

I hadn't anticipated this, but the flexible leather top means that the toe area can be wide without leaving one's toes adrift as they would be in the empty vertical space of a more rigidly shaped wide toe box (e.g., Lems). The flexible leather sits directly on top of your forefoot and toes, sort of holding your forefoot in place against the sole. So, even though you've got plenty of sideways room for your toes to spread, the overall fit remains securely sock-like as with other RunAmocs (or, if you're not familiar, similar to FiveFingers). When you raise your toes, the sole flexes upward with them. (Posted on 10/20/17)

Find Your Size!

You can measure your feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method then you may want to try our printable size guide. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Have you noticed the stripes running across the rubber toe caps of your Primal RunAmocs? Ever wonder why they're there? As part of Softstar's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable manufacturing practices, these protective toe caps are made from upcycled bicycle inner tubes.

In our region of western Oregon, commuting by bicycle is very popular. The large number of bikes on our roads leads to many bicycle repair shops, and most of them are overflowing with old rubber inner tubes. Our shoe designers saw an opportunity to both improve our shoe and keep much of this waste from being sent to the landfill. After a few tedious experiments we found these rubber tubes are perfect for covering the toe areas of our shoes.

To make sure we were not compromising the quality of our shoes, we made prototypes both with upcycled inner tubes and with new sheets of rubber and put them to the test on rugged hiking trails. In the end, the toe caps made from inner tubes held up better and provided more durability!

Softstar founder Tim Oliver now makes regular trips to our local bike shops, most notably the Corvallis Bicycle Collective, which sets aside their used inner tubes in anticipation of his visit. We then filter out the inner tubes that are too thin or too thick, cut out sections that show signs of damage, thoroughly wash what's left and stitch it to the front of our shoes!

For more information on our efforts to run an environmentally friendly workshop, visit our Sustainable Practices page.

Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

Pros & Cons

Pros: A favorite for its stylish look and extremely cozy feel.

Cons: Not water resistant, unless treated with a suede protector leathercare. Requires more effort to clean (we recommend a suede brush).

Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.

Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold (still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes).

Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.

Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!

Our suede leather is a popular choice for casual everyday shoes that look and feel fantastic! Many people use it for athletic shoes as well, though it does require extra effort to keep dry and clean.

Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.

While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leathercare.

Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.

In the fall of 2009, we noticed a sharp increase in calls from customers requesting modifications to our existing line of minimalist moccasins. We were surprised to learn that people weren't only wearing them around the house, but to run trails, marathons and even ultramarathons. With interest increasing in barefoot running, we began development of a barefoot running moccasin designed by and for runners.

Softstar called on our online community of fans to solicit input on ideal features to design a new shoe specifically for runners that was light, ventilated and featured super thin and flexible running soles. Our fantastic customers submitted ideas, provided feedback on prototypes and ultimately voted on the name RunAmoc. Since the very successful launch of the Original RunAmoc (now discontinued), we have added the Dash, Moc3 and Primal to the line. We hope you find these unique running shoes to be a benefit to your training routine and a treat for your feet!

Making the switch from traditional shoes to minimal shoes or barefoot running/walking should be done gradually with research and advice from healthcare professionals to prevent injury. It is not recommended to begin heavy running in minimalist/barefoot shoes until your feet have adapted properly. You will probably be tempted to just take off since they are FUN and you feel like a kid in them, but you may end up injuring yourself if you plunge into full speed without proper conditioning.
