Primal FAQ

Since the Primal RunAmoc has such a unique shape, we receive many questions about its design and fit. Here are some of the most common concerns we encounter:

Should I order the same size in a Primal RunAmoc as I do for a Dash RunAmoc?

Most likely, yes. We strive to keep sizing as consistent as possible across all styles and the length of the Primal sole is the same length as our other sole shape. The majority of our testers of the Primal RunAmoc wore the same size as they wear in our Dash RunAmoc, but a small percentage preferred one size smaller. Variations with the way the uppers are designed along with subtle differences in an individual’s foot shape can change how a shoe feels, plus many people have different preferences for how snug or loose they prefer a shoe to fit. We recommend trying the same size you wear for Dash RunAmocs and rest assured that we offer an easy return/exchange process if needed.

I see you have regular, wide and narrow for other styles. What width is the Primal? How wide is it? Can you tell me if it is wide enough for my feet?

The Primal is available in Regular and Narrow widths.

The width of the Primal toe box is much wider than any other shoes we make, but the uppers and overall fit of the shoe are designed to fit snugly at your midfoot and heel. We have found that a Regular width Primal generally fits well if you order Regular or Wide in other Softstar shoes. In addition, if you have ordered wide Softstar shoes in the past simply because you wanted more room for toes to spread, then our regular width Primal RunAmoc will likely work very well for you. If you have a slim midfoot, you may prefer the Narrow width. If you have additional questions, you are always welcome to contact our customer service elves for assistance!

Is the shoe also wider in the heel?

Can I get the toe cap on other shoes?

No. The unique Primal toe cap is only available on our Primal shoe.

Will the Primal sole shape be offered on more shoe styles?

Possibly. Currently this sole shape is only available for the Primal RunAmoc, but our designers are already testing it with some of our other existing styles. Depending on customer response to this shoe, we may add additional styles with this sole shape in 2018.

How does the shape of the Primal RunAmoc change between regular and narrow widths?

Both regular and narrow widths of the Primal RunAmoc keep the toe box as the widest part of the shoe. The narrow width is reduced most along the toe box, slightly less at the middle/instep portion of the shoe and has no change around the heel. Narrow width is recommended for people who do not need the full amount of space in the toe box. For example, if you are new to minimalist shoes and are trying to restore your feet to their natural shape after years of wearing tapered shoes, then the full amount of space from the regular width may seem excessive, especially at first. This diagram shows how the regular and narrow width compare to each other:

Customer Reviews

Best shoes I've ever owned Review by Jose
I got these shoes (2mm vibram soles) for running and general use and so far they've been amazing. I have wide feet, and there is plenty of room to move my toes. At a first it might seem like there's too much excess space for your 3rd and 4th toes, but those toes actually move forward more when you're on the ball of your foot so I think it's actually just right.

I am right in between sizes (mens 9 and mens 10), and realistically I am probably just into the 10 range. Still I ordered mens 9 after consulting the elves since my intended use includes them getting wet from time to time which can cause them to stretch (they haven't so far). I'm glad I ordered down, they are so light and nonrestrictive that they form your feet and it'd be hard to go too small with all the toe space.

I also got Nikwax to waterproof them, which has seemed to work well. I've gone on runs in wet and even slushy conditions and so far my feet have stayed dry.

I also love the upcycled bike tubes on the front! The tube has a unique pattern on each shoe which give it some character.

The price is not cheap but it's worth every penny. I'll definitely be coming back for another pair when these wear out. (Posted on 4/22/18)
The most amazing fit... until the stretched. Review by Sam
Really loved the fit of the shoes and the look. Garnered a lot of interest from others in my town. Unfortunately they stretched the first time a took them out onto a damp trail. It is rather unfortunate because both the build quality and the initial fit of the shoe are like nothing else I have seen or felt before. Hoping this issue might be resolved in later iterations of this shoe as now no other shoe feels the same as when I first put these Primal RunAmocs on. Unfortunately they are just not suited for where I am here in the "wet" coast British Columbia. I will try to mod the shoes and add a laceup at the back to get a semblance of the foot feel back. Good luck Softstar with continually perfecting these shoes, the world needs a shoe with this wide of toe box and a wide flat sole! As far as I know you are the only company truly brave enough to push that norm (and to do it in style!). (Posted on 4/12/18)
Don't want to wear other shoes Review by Monisha
I love these and would wear them exclusively. I waterproofed mine with nikwax and they're fine here in Utah snow and mud, but it's not the Seattle area wetness by a long shot. They're not warm enough for serious snow, but I'm hoping to get a pair of your boots sometime soon. (Posted on 2/24/18)
Good, but not great Review by Perry
I've owned most of the minimalist shoes. I've yet to find a perfect pair, maybe I'm just picky. I was looking for a shoe that I could wear to work every day in the wet Seattle winters (2.x mile walk both ways), around the office, hiking, and (ideally) running. These weren't a great option.

1. On my second wearing I ended up hiking through quite a bit of mud and water, these stretched a full size when getting properly drenched, then took an amazing amount of time to dry out. This was the deal breaker. I needed something that I could wear anywhere. They no longer fit and are in the giveaway bin. Worn 3-4x.
2. Running: not great. Like most minimalist shoes, they 'clop'—that slapping sound when they hit the trail. Fivefingers don't do this, they seem to be the exception. Somewhere on this site Softstar talks about shoes that can do the Leadville 100. I can say that these are definitely not tough enough to do that race—not by a longshot.
3. Around the office: until they resized, these were fantastic (that one awesome day). My boss wears a pair on dry days and he loves them (but he has another pair for rainy days).

They have a GREAT minimal feel. I just don't feel like they're very durable or good for what I wanted.

Note from the Elves: Thanks for your review Perry and sorry they did not work out for you. Please be assured these shoes have most definitely done the Leadville 100 and other ultras - check out

Supremely comfortable Review by Diane
I thought Rogues and Chukkas were comfortable.....but now they lounge in my closet, as I daily choose these amazing Primals. My previous Softstar shoes needed to be slightly too long, in order for my upturning toes to be comfortable in the shallow toe box. The extra width in the Primal somehow gives me more toe room in a vertical sense - and I also suspect the cool bicycle-tube toe cap helps to hide the bump from those rising toes. The ability to have a tight fit in the ankle and loose in the toe is delightful (my Rogues are very comfy, but I slip around in them). I hope to see more styles adapted to this new design, especially the Merry Jane, as I would love to be able to wear that one. All in all, excellent work Elves...... (Posted on 1/7/18)
Super Shoes Review by James
Who would have thought that a shoe shaped like a foot would be so comfortable? Got these just in time to hike Pinnacles National Park and they were fantastic. Please please please make a Hawthorn Chukka with this toe box! (Posted on 11/23/17)
ruined me for other shoes! Review by Laura
These shoes have ruined me for other shoes! It's like they were made for my feet. The material is super comfy and the wide (extra wide!) toes box allows my toes to spread and create more stability with each step. It's hard to go back to a 'regular' shoe after this. Time to clean out the closet. ;) (Posted on 10/31/17)
Super Comfortable - Definitely get these! Review by Cruz
These fit great and are super comfortable immediately. I like the materials they are made out of and how they feel on my feet. Best Softstars yet! (Posted on 10/21/17)

Find Your Size!

You can measure your feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method then you may want to try our printable size guide. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Have you noticed the stripes running across the rubber toe caps of your Primal RunAmocs? Ever wonder why they're there? As part of Softstar's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable manufacturing practices, these protective toe caps are made from upcycled bicycle inner tubes.

In our region of western Oregon, commuting by bicycle is very popular. The large number of bikes on our roads leads to many bicycle repair shops, and most of them are overflowing with old rubber inner tubes. Our shoe designers saw an opportunity to both improve our shoe and keep much of this waste from being sent to the landfill. After a few tedious experiments we found these rubber tubes are perfect for covering the toe areas of our shoes.

To make sure we were not compromising the quality of our shoes, we made prototypes both with upcycled inner tubes and with new sheets of rubber and put them to the test on rugged hiking trails. In the end, the toe caps made from inner tubes held up better and provided more durability!

Softstar founder Tim Oliver now makes regular trips to our local bike shops, most notably the Corvallis Bicycle Collective, which sets aside their used inner tubes in anticipation of his visit. We then filter out the inner tubes that are too thin or too thick, cut out sections that show signs of damage, thoroughly wash what's left and stitch it to the front of our shoes!

For more information on our efforts to run an environmentally friendly workshop, visit our Sustainable Practices page.

Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

Pros & Cons

Pros: A favorite for its stylish look and extremely cozy feel.

Cons: Not water resistant, unless treated with a suede protector leathercare. Requires more effort to clean (we recommend a suede brush).

Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.

Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold (still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes).

Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.

Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!

Our suede leather is a popular choice for casual everyday shoes that look and feel fantastic! Many people use it for athletic shoes as well, though it does require extra effort to keep dry and clean.

Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.

While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leathercare.

Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.

In the fall of 2009, we noticed a sharp increase in calls from customers requesting modifications to our existing line of minimalist moccasins. We were surprised to learn that people weren't only wearing them around the house, but to run trails, marathons and even ultramarathons. With interest increasing in barefoot running, we began development of a barefoot running moccasin designed by and for runners.

Softstar called on our online community of fans to solicit input on ideal features to design a new shoe specifically for runners that was light, ventilated and featured super thin and flexible running soles. Our fantastic customers submitted ideas, provided feedback on prototypes and ultimately voted on the name RunAmoc. Since the very successful launch of the Original RunAmoc (now discontinued), we have added the Dash, Moc3 and Primal to the line. We hope you find these unique running shoes to be a benefit to your training routine and a treat for your feet!

Making the switch from traditional shoes to minimal shoes or barefoot running/walking should be done gradually with research and advice from healthcare professionals to prevent injury. It is not recommended to begin heavy running in minimalist/barefoot shoes until your feet have adapted properly. You will probably be tempted to just take off since they are FUN and you feel like a kid in them, but you may end up injuring yourself if you plunge into full speed without proper conditioning.
