The oil tanned leather uppers are characterized by a vintage, distressed look embracing natural imperfections, such as scars and scratches, that add character. The leather is not treated with a topcoat or protective layer as it is meant to develop a patina over time reflecting each Camino's journey.

Camino means "path" in Spanish. Some of the design elements are inspired by the scallop shell symbol of the iconic Camino pilgrimage across Portugal, Spain, and France.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

Had big expectations from this sandals , very disappointed the fit was too small, I asked for returning label but still haven’t receive after mailing 3 times with costumer service

  2. Love them x 2!

    Rating

To say I’m obsessed with these sandals is an understatement! I managed to snag a brown pair during the winter sale, and have loved them so much that I recently got another pair in black. I have been in barefoot shoes for 10+ years, and a little bit of cushion while maintaining a zero drop “barefoot” feel is much appreciated nowadays while chasing around my kids for hours on end. Besides how they feel, they look amazing and their quality is outstanding. Super excited to wear these for years to come. Thank you Elves!

    walking on clouds

    Rating

I bought a pair for myself and a pair for my partner. We both needed to tighten the toe side straps because the very front of the sandal needs to go up with the toes and then they’re just heaven to walk with. Very light, comfortable and you forget you’re wearing them.
  4. Perfect, perfect, perfect!!

    Rating

As a long-time lover of Birkenstock sandals, they were the one shoe I was hesitant to give up after transitioning to barefoot shoes several years ago. I would still wear my Birks every so often in the summer, wishing a barefoot shoe company would make a similar style....and Softstar did!!! :) They are comfy right out of the box, as with all Softstar shoes...and with the heel strap, I am allowed to wear them to work at the public library, which is an extra win. They look good with everything!!! Do not wait....these are definitely a barefoot shoe you need in your life!! <3

Super comfortable sandal for everyday wear

    Rating

I ordered the Camino sandals in November last year (after many years of ordering Birkos every couple of seasons). I'm so glad I did. The Caminos are the most comfortable sandals I've ever owned! I have worn them nearly every day over the Australian summer and I absolutely love them! The slightly cushy footbed is great for walking around on hard surfaces and the suede feels awesome. For reference my feet are 24.7 cm long by 9.8 cm wide and the Regular W8.5–9 fit me perfectly after adjusting the buckles and wearing the leather straps in, which didn't take long. Thanks for an amazing product!

I love these sandals! As a barefoot person for so many years, these are a delightful little comfy shoe. The only downside is that the back heel strap stretched out really fast and even now on the smallest hole, it's a big large. I will just poke another hole for the closure and keep rocking though, cuz these are the best!

Very happy, great for hot weather

    Rating

This was my first purchase from Softstar, and I'm very happy with the result. I live in Australia and we're heading into summer, so I wanted a sandal similar to a classic Birkenstock, but better for my feet. My feet are 27.7cm long, so ordered a size 11 according to the size chart in carob, and they fit perfectly. The leather is supple out of the box, and in my experience has ever so slightly stretched as they've broken in, moulding perfectly to my feet. I'm very happy with the service as well – international shipping to Australia can be temperamental, but I placed my order on 17 Sept 2024, the order shipped the next day, and I received it quickly on the 22nd only five days later. These are now my go-to shoes in warmer months when I'm going to the shops or when I'm not working. Very happy overall. Arrived 22/09/2024

    Nice Sandals

    Rating

This is the first pair of shoes I got from Softstar and I am happy with them. I followed the size chart and the shoes fit me well. The first day I wore them I had to play around with what notches to use on each strap to get the best fit, once I figured that out they were comfortable the first day I wore them with no rubbing or other issues. I continue to wear them as we move into fall because having the airflow for my feet helps me feel less hot since it still gets quite warm in the afternoons. I got them in the dark brown Carob and the color is as shown.

    Not quite barefoot enough

    Rating

I bought these on a recommendation from a popular barefoot shoe blogger as a replacement for my birks. I've been in barefoot shoes for about 3 years. I do love the look and style of these shoes. I had to cut new holes for the heel strap as they are rather loose. The problem lies in the sole. I got thr vibram 2mm soles. I'm not sure if it's because this sole is on top of another thick sole (which I guess is part of the foot bed) but this shoe is not flexible. At least not what you need from barefoot shoes. Because there is a lack of bend when walking you end up dragging your foot slightly and shuffling along almost. I brought these to a festival for two days as my only shoes and I somehow ended up with mild plantar fasciitis on my heel. I am 33 and have never in my life had plantar fasciitis. I think these shoes could be GREAT if this was fixed somehow. But for now I cannot wear these because they are not flexible like true barefoot shoes. Which sucks because at $130 they ain't cheap.

  11. Very Comfortable with Pizzazz

    Rating

I’ve worn Softstar shoes for a long time, but these are my first Camino sandals. They are super comfortable, and the shiny silver color feels very fashion forward! I got them in a size in between my other Softstar sandals and the closed-toe Softstar shoes I wear. I will likely get another pair of Camino sandals in a more subdued color as well.
  12. My feet love them

    Rating

Thank you for creating the Camino sandals down to every comfortable detail. After I made the transition to barefoot shoes, I slipped on my old Birkenstocks to take out the garbage and they felt so awkward with the arch support that I now no longer need (because my feet are stronger). I've been waiting for this design! They were comfortable on the first wear. They don't rub the wrong way anywhere. They feel both super-secure and wide open and airy at the same time. The straps and the sole make them comfortable on long, brisk walks. You can even climb some rocks. I have not just wide feet, but extra-wide feet that kind of look like triangles with the widest part right before the toes. These fit me so perfectly, though I did size up from my Switchbacks size for footbed length after trying my normal size and different strap adjustments but still seeing my toes poke out over the front when walking. The return process was easy - which I also appreciate. Lastly, I've since tried some other barefoot sandals and shoes and been disappointed in comparison to Softstar shoes. At one time, I would have kept shoes as long as I could fit my foot into them! Now I know what it feels like when your shoes really fit and allow you to walk naturally. I can say that Softstar is the one shoe company that truly improved my quality of life.

Ankle Strap latch on wrong side of shoe

    Rating

The leather straps that are used to secure the shoe to the foot could use a few additional holes for larger feet. Also, the metal latch that you put the leather strap into on the ankle should be positioned on the other side of the shoe. Currently the metal latch is towards the outside of both feet. This makes it difficult to secure the strap into the latch and tighten it. It would be easier to secure the strap into the latch on the ankle if the latch was positioned on the right side of the shoe for the left foot and on the left side of the shoe for the right foot.
  14. Just Buy Them!

    Rating

These shoes are AMAZING! Feels like walking on a cloud with the benefit of the silhouette of the old Burks I wore before converting to zero drop and a barefoot style. The thicker 5mm Vibram sole is so nice guys, not everything has to be paperthin all the time, even barefoot lovers like some squish now and then!! I’ve been a Softstar fan for a while. Love the primal Mary Jane’s. I wear the same 7U in the Mary Jane as I do in the Cameo. Please offer them in black for the fall! Dont wait. Just buy the shoes. The elves are doing amazing work. My new favorite shoes hands down!
  15. Clouds for shoes

    Rating

I just returned from 10 days in the Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier and I wore my Camino sandals almost the entire time. Took them off only to go kayaking and to play Frisbee in wet grass. We did lots of walking and trail hiking (nothing technical). These sandals were so comfortable and lightweight, it felt like I had clouds for shoes. I highly recommend them!

    We both love these sandals

    Rating

I generally am completely barefoot except in winter or when someone forces me to wear shoes. I used to love Birkenstocks, but the arch "support", OUCH. These are awesome. So comfortable. The strap means I don't have to unnaturally grip with my toes, my foot can remain relaxed. I've worn them for a whole shift of being on my feet (5 hrs) and they were great. My partner also loves hers so much and wears them everyday. I highly recommend these.

    Perfect Birks replacement

    Rating

I missed the days of wearing Birkenstocks but the arch support in them hurt my feet. These look just as good and feel even more comfortable than the days when I could wear them. I normally find transition barefoot shoes with thicker, more cushioned soles too much for my feet but these are perfect! When I first tried them on they felt a little awkward, like they were angled weird. However, once I started walking in them they fit great and I wear them all the time.

    Rating

I love these sandals! They are a great casual sandal, especially for someone like me who has a plantar plate tear in her foot. I have not walked great distances in these sandals, but have been very pleased each time I’ve worn them so far; just the right amount of cushion underfoot and solidly on my feet. Will probably get them in a second color in the future.

    The Adventure Shoe!

    Rating

Ok so I have been transitioning to barefoot shoes for a year now. And I decided to trade out my Birks for the Caminos. This was a REALLY tough decision for me because I was so attached to my previous sandal. Anyways, after looking into other barefoot sandals, and doing research, I ultimately decided to purchase these. I have to say, I LOVE these shoes! I have 2 toddlers that I am constantly chasing, and we get outside a lot. I love the thicker sole, and the leather straps! It’s been outside in 90 degree weather, and has been on my feet for up to 8 hours. These shoes have been on mini hikes (even though these are not my go-to hiking shoes). These are my ultimate summer shoe! My husband laughs at how often I wear these shoes. The only thing I would change would be making even tighter fitting hole punches. I have low volume feet and small ankles. And I’m already on the tightest setting. Other than that, these shoes were EXACTLY what I was looking for. :)

Very disappointed with these sandals. Large buckles very hard to fasten. So it is hard to tighten them enough to prevent slipping when I walk. The on my sandals is very stiff, enough to get a blister the first time I wore them. Just very uncomfortable for my feet.

    We Both Love Them

    Rating

Bought a pair for my husband and myself to replace our Birkenstocks, which have become increasingly uncomfortable to wear now that we both are transitioning to barefoot shoes. They are true to size and didn’t require a break-in period. We immediately brought them to Italy and wore them almost daily. I’m a women’s 9 and purchased a 8.5-9 and they fit perfectly.

Very comfortable! I like the cushioning. I think they are a little wide for me though because I have the straps all the way tightened. It would be nice to see a narrower option. I liked the silver color the best, but it was sold out when I bought them.

    Finally!!!

    Rating

Finally, my barefoot dreams have come true! I have worn minimalist footwear over 6 years and the one pair of shoes that I haven't been able to get rid of were my Birkenstocks. There have been a couple of attempts from other brands, but none of them have captured the essence correctly. These shoes are PERFECT! I have worn them almost every single day since their arrival. I have low volume and narrow feet, so I had to size down, but I can see these fitting a large variety of foot shapes and widths. I have zero complaints so far. I love that the strap holds my foot secure, yet I can still slip them on and off without having to undo the buckle. They look so good with my wardrobe. Thank you, Softstar!
  25. Almost perfect summer shoe

    Rating

I bought these as an alternative to a certain other brand of belted sandals in this category, owing to not wanting a non-barefoot sole/overly thick foot bed. What’s good: this is the first pair of barefoot style sandals that I haven’t developed blisters. I was able to wear them straight away on an urban holiday to Munich and didn’t wince or develop blisters or wear marks. They break in right away, they held up well as non-slip in a sudden torrential spell, and as much walking as I did my feet didn’t hurt very much. What could be better: it’s a bit tough at first to get the fit right, maybe as the footbed settles I won’t have to adjust the straps as much as I didn’t quite find the perfect setting between too tight with the top two straps or the heel strap or so lose as it felt the heel strap was coming lose and becoming a hindrance. They are a bit thicker on the sole than I usually wear, maybe the urban edition would be a better fit in hindsight. That said, these have become my go-to warm weather shoes. I look forward to leaving a long term review after a longer wear period, hopefully these will last for years like their famed competition.

    Mediocre sandals, unfortunately

    Rating

The good: Materials are premium, as usual from Softstar. Leather is soft and nice, and i like how the inner sole is the non-sticky type (i hate that sound when every step creates a sound of skin lifting from the leather sole of a slipper or a sandal; this leather type in this sandal has none of that). The sandals look nice visually. They feel like a quality product. The bad: counter to the previous comment, these sandals are too narrow for my feet. Both big and small toe go outside the side edges of the sandal a little. Not a big deal for short use (1-2 hours) but if I need to wear them all day then i feel the skin on my little toe gets too scractched from the sandal strap. Softstar should really make them configurable to have regular and primal options, im not pleased at all about the width currently (i wear primal sawyers and they are perfect). I also don't like the rubber sole thickness - it is very thick, i think its harder and thicker than any other sole from softstar. It seems even harder than on my switchback boots. I appreciate sandals are open in the front so if sole was softer then the sandal front may potentially get tripped over various bumps on the road, so i presume softstar designed it to be sturdy enough even if front was cought up, but i think this design went over the top. I trully love switchbacks and sawyers, i don't have other shoe brands than softstar. But unfortunatelly due to downsides of these sandals, id only give them 2 or 3 stars out of 5.

    Good but...

    Rating

Okay so this has a lot of potential. While not totally "barefoot" due to the thicker sole, they're very comfortable and I'm overall quite happy with them as far as comfort and functionality go. The one problem is that they're *extremely* wide. And while this does not affect anything other than appearance, it looks quite ridiculous, they're that wide. It probably looks just fine on a man, but on my feet, there's a large gap on the sides and it's definitely aesthetically very strange. If you don't mind that, they're great.

I love these sandals!!!!! So very happy that Softstar took on this design challenge. I will not be parted from them. I love ALL my Softstar shoes with a passion. And I do love my Solstice sandals for their thin-soled comfort and beauty. But the Caminos are a sandal that makes my heart (and feet) sing. I've worn them through hot humid summer-time temps for a couple months now and they've been nothing short of terrific. Cannot say enough how much I love them. They've captured me, heart and sole :)

    Possibly my fav shoes ever!

    Rating

These are definitely my favorite shoes since going barefoot. My feet want cushion, since I mostly walk on cement. These have a nice cushion that doesn't take away from flexibility. My feet still feel free. I'm a city girl & these are my goto to shoes. When it's not too hot, I prefer my Softstar moccasins when going to the dog park. Bonus that they look good with a casual dress or pants.

Fantastic Barefoot Sandal, Birkenstock for Barefooters!

    Rating

I've been waiting for someone to bring out a sandal that looks like a Birkenstock but acts like a barefoot shoe, and this is IT! I followed the sizing guide and advice from Anya's barefoot reviews, and am so happy. The shoe beds down quickly moulding to your foot, and the leather softens down even more than it already is, I'll probably have to put some more holes in the straps but that's fine. I prefer my sandals a little big as I hate my heels or toes falling off the ends! I had a bit of a wait for these, as demand is high, but I was kept informed and they are definitely worth the wait! The strap on the back is a fantastic addition and stops your foot from moving, and stops your toes from gripping as you walk. I hope they will serve me for years to come .
  31. Didn't work for me

    Rating

I wanted to love these sandals so badly! They are beautiful and a much needed type of sandal in the barefoot/minimalist shoe world. I personally love the thickness of the sole - I appreciate a bit more padding in my shoes than what some might consider a true barefoot shoe. Unfortunately, these miss the mark on fitting for me. No matter how I adjust the straps, one sandal is a slightly too loose and the other is slightly too tight. If that was the only issue, I probably would keep them and see how they fit as they wear in. The bigger issue for me is the way my left sandal/foot shifts as soon as I take a couple of steps (and this is the more snug fitting one). I haven't noticed this issue in other sandals I've worn, but with these my left heel moves laterally and I end up feeling like I'm balancing on the edge of the heel bed, which feels uneven and definitely not the desired sensation for a barefoot/minimalist fit. It feels as though this would negatively impact my gait and/or make me more prone to spraining my ankle. It only happens with one of the sandals, and I have no clue if it's an inconsistency in the build of the two sandals, or if it's something very particular about my anatomy. In any case, I am sadly returning these. If updates are made in future generations, I'll likely be excited to try them again. I would LOVE to have a sandal like this, if it could fit more like a glove.

    Love these so much!!

    Rating

I have been a softstar shoe buyer for well over a decade! I’ve outfitted myself and a dozen kids in these and love them. I was so thrilled when these came out. These sandals are my go-to. Birkenstocks just couldn’t cut if after all these years of minimalist shoes. I am so glad I ordered the day they were available. I won’t ever be without these sandals again. They are so comfortable and look great. I wouldn’t change a thing. Keep the amazing products coming Elves!

Good, but wide version is needed

    Rating

First impressions after a month of use. My feet covers the whole soft area at the front, which is less than optimal. However, loosening the front strap allows makes these sandals acceptable for me. Wide version would be upgrade and a buy. Caminos are more of a minimalist than barefoot shoes, but on hard surfaces I find that a good compromise. In my opinion, the shoes also have a quality feel, but at this point I cannot say anything about durability. 4/5 stars for shoes, 2.5/5 for fit.
  34. Love them!

    Rating

These were purchased for my son (who has the same size feet as me) so we have both tried them on. I was surprised how thick the sole looked at first, but they are still extremely flexible and comfortable for long walks on concrete surfaces. He is still breaking in the leather straps, but they haven't been uncomfortable, just still molding to his feet. I'm hoping he grows out of them soon so I can have them!

    Disappointed

    Rating

The upper part of these sandals is completely comfortable, but I hate the squishy foot bed! They make the bottom of my feet ache. I've been wearing Run Amoks with leather soles, and love them. I'm very small (93lbs), so maybe a heavier person would compress the sole to a comfortable degree.

    Cute

    Rating

I was lucky enough to get the Hydra color (silver). They are very cute and true to size. My high volume, high arch foot likes a very thin sole --my most comfortable shoes are the Softstar Solstice sandal -- so the padding in the Camino is not very comfortable for me. I wear them on days when I don't have to walk much or stand. I am still working on adjusting all the straps to get the best fit on each foot. I realize that the straps do not have to match. I am glad I tried these and if I figure out how to make them truly comfy for me, I will get a second pair.

    Not up to par

    Rating

So, I bought these more than a month ago. Due to its popularity it was delayed. I wrote to the elves mail and got no reply. It was not until I wrote to the company that takes care of the payment that I got a reply from the elves saying that they never received an email from me. Which is weird since I was writing to the email provided by the order confirmation. Finally the sandals arrived, and they are just kind of not good enough for the price and popularity. Like, the sole is not flexible enough to call these barefoot shoes - at least mine don't bend like the pictures provided in this page. I fastened one with the same force as the other sandal and one clasp broke. I had to fix that with a local shoe maker. Once you are wearing them they feel different. I get blisters with one and the other feels comfy. No matter how tight I fasten them on the one foot that doesn't feel good. I understand your own feet can be different but there's no way one foot is incredibly skinny in comparison to the other. I believe one sandal is just better made than the other, honestly. I'm very disappointed, cause I really wanted to like these.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Hi Karla - sorry to disappoint! It looks like emails were going to Global-e, the company that arranges our international shipping instead of directly to the Elves. We love to help and pride ourselves in responding in one business day, so if that doesn't happen, please contact us directly through our website. We will follow up with you individually regarding your fit issues.
    Thank you, the Elves

The new Camino sandal is really comfortable and surprisingly light. I have very wide feet, so I need all shoes to have the wide toe box. Having 3 straps is also helpful to customize areas to leave looser or tighter.

Sole is a bit thick but comfy

I like a thin sole for my barefoot shoes and these are thicker with a cushion. Great for asphalt/concrete but I didn’t expect that. I almost returned them because of it but they are comfy and fit me well. I wear 6.5 UK
  43. Mostly Great

    Rating

Like some others here I have really missed my Birkenstocks but found them too uncomfortable now that I wear minimalist shoes. The style is fantastic and mostly the fit is great - the footbed is super soft and the leather straps have some give which means for me they don't bind. Here's where I think they could improve: 1) Offer them in a more aggressive Vibram sole so they can be used for light hiking and 2) Tweak the length a bit - I am consistently a women's 8-8.5 in all other shoes and ordered a 7U (which should be women's 7-8.5) and these are about 1/2 size too long. I wear a 7U in other Softstar styles just fine but for some reason these are long. I'm keeping them because I'm afraid the 6U might be too short. Otherwise, these are the sandals of my dreams!
  44. The barefoot Birkenstocks of my dreams!

    Rating

I LOVE these shoes. I used to wear Birkenstocks daily but they were killing my feet. I have been wanting a barefoot version of their classic sandals forever.. I was beyond thrilled when I saw that softstar was offering these sandals, they’re PERFECT! Awesome barefoot feel and the cushion is much appreciated as I spend most of the day on my feet. My feet spread quite a bit when I’m up and around, and these accommodate that beautifully. I love them so much. Thank you elves, I will for sure be ordering more pairs!!! Looking forward to the hydra restock! And maybe consider a barefoot/elf version of Birkenstocks Boston clogs some day ;)
  45. Narrow heel, wide toes

    Rating

I have too much movement around my heel, and I need to really tighten the strap but still get a lateral slip because there's too much footbed but I love that my toes aren't squished. I will keep trying them, see how they mold to my foot shape.
  46. Leather Flexes at toe

    Rating

Received my pair in Marlin and love the fit and feel. I ordered a size 8U and normally wear a Womans 9 or 9.5 in US sizes. I didn't think I would like the cushioning but soles already formed to my feet and they are comfortable. The leather does gap out between the first and second strap when I flex my toes up - but that would happen unless the sole was rigid, which it definitely is NOT. They have good grip/traction which I like. Will update more in a few months but for now very good first impressions.
  47. Finally!

These are much better than I hoped for, although they could be a little lighter weight. They seem really sturdy. I haven't taken them off since they arrived!
  48. Better than Birks

    Rating

I love Birkenstocks - but the arch support in them is now painful since I made the transition to barefoot shoes. I need the flat sole on these and the leather is high quality, and made in USA. Nice. Would also like without the heel strap wondering if they would stay on as well? I might need a few pair.

  50. GET THEM!!! But Narrow feet beware

    Rating

These are the best! So comfortable and look so good. They were everything they were advertised to be! Flexible and wide. If you are like me and have narrow feet, there will be extra room on the sides. The foot beds are generous! The straps are super adjustable so it’s not a big issue, which is why I kept mine. I think though if I ordered again I would do custom. Oh and I love that they are an Oregon based company, love supporting USA made goods.
  51. too narrow

    Rating

I’ve been waiting years for Soft Star to make a wide, primal-shaped sandal, have emailed them about it more than once, and know others have done so as well, so I’m sad that they chose to make these sandals with one of their narrowest footbeds. At the very least, they could have offered a primal option too. The entire footbed (including the portion outside of where the straps are sewn on) is just barely wide enough for my feet (they come all the way to the edges). Unfortunately the padding, which is raised above the rest of the footbed, doesn’t extend all of the way across. Because of this, the edges of my feet hang off of it, which is really uncomfortable, and I imagine would affect my gait. There’s a lot of extra leather on the big toe side that sticks out and gapes. It’s quite noticeable and really unattractive. I’ve seen mention of it in a minimalist shoe group that I’m in, so it’s not just my pair that’s like this. It might not be as noticeable for people with narrow and low volume feet who can tighten the strap more, but definitely doesn’t look good on wide feet. If Soft Star fixes this issue and offers them in a primal shape, I will absolutely give them another try, as they’re otherwise really lovely sandals. But sadly, as is, they don’t seem worth the price and I'll be sending them back.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Please note the Camino is on our Hybrid Regular sole shape which is one of the wider soles available, but alas it fell short of your needs! Your feedback is noted and we will consider introducing a Wide option in the future.

As a year-round sandal wearer I love the Camino! It has a great fit, cushy but supportive underfoot and holds up well in the rainy Oregon weather!
  53. 4.5/5 great most of the time

    Rating

These are good for normal day-to-day stuff, and I will be wearing them a lot. They’re more “minimalist” than they are “barefoot,” but that's a good thing for walking on hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt (which for me is 90% of the time). I think most people can wear and appreciate them. I wouldn’t recommend them for doing a lot of uphill walking because then the back strap wears quite a bit more on the heel than usual. I would rate it 4.5 stars if it were an option (so I’m rounding up to 5). For me they would be “perfect” if I could wear them on a 2-hour hike, but I realize shoes are just better for that.

The Camino sandal runs true to size. If you are towards the extreme upper or lower end of your size range, you may want to size up or down depending on fit preference.

The back strap can have a significant impact on how the shoe fits. For example, if you have extra room in the front, you may want to tighten the backstrap so your foot sits more forward.

The outsole total height is 11mm, and the innersole height is 4mm. Altogether, the total stack height is approximately 15mm. Bear in mind that the Poron® foam innersole squishes down, so as you are wearing the Camino, the stack height is more like 12-13mm.
