Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Includes Sublime, Nova, Dublin, Highline, Torino, Shiny, LITE, Plonge, Aged, and Vegetable-Tanned Leathers

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) and Colorado leather are "naked" leathers and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned or Colorado leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Suede and Nubuck Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede/nubuck leather care product to protect against stains and water absorption (we recommend Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof). While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

Over time, suede outsoles naturally develop a smoother surface with wear If you’d like to refresh the texture and add some extra grip back, a quick touch-up with a suede brush can easily restore the nap.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather care product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. For general conditioning we recommend Bee Natural Amore, For enhanced moisture protection we recommend Bee Natural Rain and Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leather care products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofing to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

    Office appropriate

    Rating

These flats look really good for the office and have much more toe room than typical flats. I guess I've gotten used to lots of toe room, though, because I still feel squished in these and wish I'd gotten the primal version. Maybe someday I will, but these will be fine for the few hours I'm at the office each day now.

My first ever order from Softstar and I am in love. The toe box was weird and tight at first, but Softstar customer service was excellent and gave me tips to stretch them. The shoes molded very quickly to my feet, and perfectly. Great company and I want more ballerines in more colors!

My wife doesn't want to wear anything else after putting those on.
  4. Know that after you own a pair of these, you won't want to wear anything else

    Rating

My wife has been struggling to find comfortable flats. Her feet are ever so slightly wider than average but it feels like every shoe out there is made for people with feet the width of a lasagna noodle. I bought her a pair of ballerines, regular width, and they are the best fitting shoes she ever owned. Snug enough so she doesn't slide, roomy enough to be comfortable. It didn't take long before she wanted a second pair, then a third so that she would have a pair of Softstar Ballerines for every outfit. They seem so comfortable that I decided to order a pair for myself; no reason only woman should enjoy all the cool shoes!
  5. Adult Ballerine Flat

    Rating

I, a man, love to wear black adult ballerine flats - exclusively in combination with fine skin-colored or tan-colored nylon knee-high socks. I have already worn them for many hours, preferably when visiting cities, museums, brocken houses or shopping - provided the weather is dry and pleasantly warm. They get more comfortable every time I wear them. The shoe seems to me to be extremely well made and the outsole robust and fairly abrasion-resistant. Thank you, dear elves, for your solid craftsmanship.

    Comfy!

    Rating

I bought the ballerina flats with sports enclosure in a wide. I have many foot issues, unsuccessful foot surgeries and nothing ever feels comfortable. I tried these in several sizes, until I bought them a size up with the sports closure. So far, they are the only shoes that I could wear for a period of time. I plan on ordering another pair very soon.
  7. Great work shoes

    Rating

Great, comfortable shoes for work in an office (medical professional.) I have the primal Mary Jane’s as well, and I love both styles for different reasons. The Mary Jane’s Have a wider to box and thinner sole, whereas these are more tapered in the toes and have a bit more cushioning. Typical ballerina flats force your big toe to an unnatural angle, whereas these are made to fit your foot more naturally. I don’t feel I can wear correct toes with these, unlike the Mary Jane’s (which, truthfully, are probably my favorite), but these certainly have a place in my wardrobe and are far superior comfort-wise compared to traditional shoes.
  8. Nicely constructed, dressy/casual flat

    Rating

I needed to upgrade my cheap, plastic, worn out, pointed toe flats to a minimalist version - and these were a good choice! The leather feels amazing, and the Vibram sole plus the cushy insole make them super comfortable. The toe box isn't quite as wide as I thought it would be but I'm sure the leather will expand as I wear them. Overall, happy to have purchased these.

    Still my favorite

    Rating

I just bought my fourth pair of Ballerines. The first two pairs finally wore out after five years of daily use, and I wanted another black pair for times my turquoise pair wouldn’t match. Hands (and feet) down, these are my favorite shoes for work, errands, walking around … just about everything except hiking, workouts, and inclement weather. Two thumbs up for the redesigned heel: that area wore out quickly on my oldest pairs, and the extra-sturdy reinforcement is much appreciated. Despite my feet measuring on the line between 7U and 8U, I always buy 9U in these shoes. My toes feel cramped if I buy a smaller size.

    In love

    Rating

These are my go to shoes for work and dressy events now! They’re so comfy and it isn’t not noticiable that they are not “conventional” shoes so I don’t feel weird wearing them out in public. I’ve had days where I’ve walked several miles in these and my feet never start aching or tire out. I’m typically a 7.5 and I got the size 7 unisex. They felt a little tight at first, but after about a week, they fit like a glove!

Wonderful Shoes and Excellent Customer Service!

    Rating

These shoes are wonderful. I can't believe I waited so long to buy them. Well, yes I can. The price point is a lot for me, but after ordering every other kind of barefoot/wide toe box ballerina flat out there, I should have started with this one! The materials are buttery soft and once you're beyond the break in point, they're the absolute most comfortable shoes. Also, a huge shout out to the elves! I had questions about fit and comfort, and they helped me through everything quickly and knowledgeably. I 100% recommend these shoes and this company.
  12. Best Ballet Flats!

    Rating

I have been eyeing these ballet flats for a while and I finally bought them before a trip to France. They're the only shoes I brought and I wore them the entire 12 days. They're super comfortable- my feet never hurt even after walking miles everyday. And to top it off, they look great! I can't wait to order my next pair :)
  13. My go to shoe

    Rating

These are my go to shoe - can be casual or dressy and they are so comfortable. They can be a bit tight in the toe box at first, but the team at Soft Star gave me some great tips/advice for wearing them in and now they fit perfectly. Highly recommend!

They don't compare to the bison hide soles

    Rating

Unfortunately I wasn't as sold on these ones as I am on my bison hide sole ballet flats (which I'm obsessed with)! I got these to walk on paved roads so I didn't wear my other ones through too fast. These were significantly smaller all around...short and tight and with the thick padding inside the heel of the shoe didn't sit above the spot on my heel that always hurts in ballet flats. Unfortunately, I wore them to attempt to stretch them out (to no avail) so couldn't get a refund. I wouldn't recommend these but would HIGHLY recommend the bison hide sole ones....they're ridiculously comfortable.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you AM for your thoughtful review. I am sorry to hear that the soled version was not a home run for you, and that they did not stretch to your desire. Many of our fans of the bullhide sole will wear nothing else, as they are the epitome of comfort. The rubber soled version has some more versatility, and I would like to encourage you to try some different stretching techniques so they can work for you. Stuffing them with a warm, damp cloth and a shoe tree and letting them dry will help, as well as wearing them with thick socks for a few hours at a time. Feel free to call us with any questions. We really appreciate your support!

    BEST FLATS EVER!

    Rating

These are THE MOST COMFORTABLE shoes I have ever worn! I had to return the first pair because they were too small, but this pair is PERFECT! It's like wearing slippers! The leather is so soft and plush feeling, the soles have the perfect amount of "give", and they're so cute! They're PERFECT, at least for me, and I'm saving my pennies to purchase another pair soon.

    Almost wonderful

    Rating

If you have wide feet and primal merry janes are perfect for you, you may find these a little snug. That's how it is for me. I ordered these in W. I love the look and I'll wear them for dressier occasions and they may last forever because I won't walk much in them. So. They're cute, not painful, well made, I'm happy to have them.

    So soft!

These are the best ballet flats I’ve ever owned! They don’t pinch my toes, they don’t rip up my heels, and they also don’t look ridiculously wide like some barefoot shoes do. I definitely plan to buy more colors, as I can afford it.

    Best decision ever

    Rating

Incredibly comfortable! Purchasing these is one of my best decisions of my 60year old life. My feet are happy all day long. And that they are adorable is an extra bonus.
  23. Weak and wide heels

    Rating

Great idea yet defective product. The ballet toe box is wide enough. The heels, however are too wide and wobbly. Consequently, the shoes are loose, leading to an uncomfortable and unstable shuffle walk. Softstar failed to resppnd to my request for a fix.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Dear Marg - we would love to connect with you with your shoes. If they are in new condition, we would be happy to take them back. If they have been worn, there are heel stabilizers we could recommend adding to firm up the fit on your ankle.

    Comfortable Work Shoes

    Rating

These are beautiful, soft shoes I enjoy wearing to the office . I am finding over time these shoes are conforming to my 11.1 & 11.4 cm feet. Very stylish! I’m happy with them!
  25. Love

    Rating

I have had 2 pairs of these shoes for quite some time (gold ones and silver ones). I absolutely love them. They are amazingly comfortable and I still get excited to put them on my feet. I keep them at my office and these are the only "dress shoes" I wear. I plan to purchase more colors for home.
  26. Excellent and soft

    Rating

I had the primal merry janes first which are also really soft and comfortable but I felt they were not quite work wearable, so decided on the ballerine's in pewter for work and slightly more formal events. They are very soft and the construction of the shoe looks really good to me - I will definitely be buying more of this style! Comfortable to wear all day. A word of warning though, if you are in between sizes, I'd definitely recommend the strap to keep the shoe on more comfortably. I wasn't sure and so it's a bit big and will purchase an inner sole to help with that - I didn't think of it as the merry janes have their own strap already, so something I will be considering for whenever I repurchase another pair.
  27. Well Made Shoe But Needs Half Sizes

    Rating

I really wanted these ballet flats to fit! They are beautiful and clearly well made but sadly, they were a half size too big. Had I exchanged them for a full size smaller they would have been too small. My heels came out of the shoes but the toe area fit well. I am seeing enough reviews saying the same thing and hope that Softstar will pay attention and offer them in half sizes. If that time comes, I will be back!

Comfortable, but recommend the sport closure

A very comfortable shoe, almost like being barefoot. My first pair felt a little tight on my toes, so my next pair I ordered a size up with a sport closure, and it was perfect!

    Perfect Flats

    Rating

I have particularly wide feet and fully expected these to be too narrow for my comfort, but they are perfection! I like my primal merry janes, so I had high expectations and these exceeded what I had hoped. They’re soft and quickly mold to your feet. Don’t be worried if they’re a little tight, you won’t want to size up once they’ve been on for a few minutes. I even added heel pads (for slipping) and moleskin to the toes (to help with squeaking from skin/nail against leather and toe poke) making the fit even more perfect. I ordered them in platinum for a wedding, which is more delicate and I wouldn’t recommend for an everyday styling. I’ll be circling back for a pair in black!

    Perfection (Sport version)

    Rating

True to size fit, comfortable, cute, lets my feet do the job they evolved to do. I find the plain ballerine feels a little insecure, and I’ve been meaning to see a strap on to them. The two sports versions (with strap) are utter perfection. I want to wear them everyday.

Size up to be safe, or order multiple sizes at once

    Rating

My feet are 23.5 cm long (24.5 cm if you add buffer space) and my feet are 10.25 cm wide at the widest, my right foot, due to a large bunion. Mountain shaped, meaning my second toes are really long compared to my big toe, which I accounted for in my foot measurement. I meticulously followed the Softstar sizing guides (both the print-out and the sizing chart) which recommended 7U - yet this was significantly too short. Way too short. Due to the way the leather is stitched to the soles, there is no extra wiggle room and my toes felt squished, like the shoe was too short. Other customers have mentioned this, too, in the reviews below. Also, while the leather is quite soft and the regulars are wider than my beloved Tieks, it rubbed just enough against my large bunion that my bunion hurt at the end of the day. Second time around, I ordered an 8U Wide and 8U Wide + Sport Closure. The 8U Wide was WAY too wide. The shoes felt floppy and limp. But with the Sport Closure, it is nearly perfect. My bunion isn't bothered, my toes have enough space to wiggle/splay, and the shoe feels secure. I don't prefer the look of the Sport Closure, as I feel like it makes the shoes look less business formal, and I wish I could loosen it ever so slightly -- but what can I do. I'll be bankrupt by the time I account for all the shipping and return fees I need to pay just to try on shoes. I'll likely keep the 8U Wide + Sport Closure and try to find another brand for a nude look. I personally think that in spite of how wide these are, they don't quite look like clown shoes :) NOTE: If you don't have bunions and your measurement is close to mine, the 8U Regular may work for you.

So cute an comfortable but a bit loose, wish there were half sizes

    Rating

According to the size chart I am a size 6u regular but my foot was right at the line and I was concerned the 6u would be too small so I ordered size 7u regular (normal shoe size 7 1/2 wide or 8 regular). They have stretched a bit and sometimes my heel slips out of the shoe but other than that I love these and wear them all the time. If I ordered again I would probably get the 6u and hope they wouldn't be too snug. Really wish some of the shoes came in half sizes though.

I love love LOVE these shoes! I have worn them pretty much daily for almost 3 years now! I wear them for date night, to the store and even on walks sometimes. They still look nice enough to wear to Church on Sunday. The ballerine is a great barefoot shoe that fits all your needs and looks super cute, too! Don’t be startled by the price tag. They LAST! I’m now looking for a new pair because the leather is pulling away in 1 spot and it looks a little scuffed after 3 YEARS! So grateful for softstar for making shoes that last and are stylish. Happy shoe-buying!

    Sizing/shoe shape issues

    Rating

I got a pair of 6U ballet flats in aged acorn and I will say they are beautiful and the craftsmanship is stellar. I really wanted to love them, but I now dread putting them on, and I wear them only because of the money I spent on them and because the look and the color are great. The main reason I bought these shoes was for the fit and minimalist comfort and in that regard they very much underperform. In fact, they feel worse than the basic dress flats I got for $20, which was a surprise given the focus and the reputation of the company. Hopefully, this review helps someone avoid my discomfort (and twisted ankles). For context, I very comfortably wear Vivo shoes in size 7.5, even with thicker socks, and for many other shoes, I'm a size 7. My larger foot is about 23.3 cm in length (longest at the big toe) and 9.1 cm in width at the ball (10 cm at the toes with toes in a slightly splayed position). Softstar chart comfortably puts me in a 6U, apparently designed for feet of length 23.0 - 23.9 cm and width 8.4-10.1 cm. The 6U flats are WAY TOO small for my feet. Here are the dimensions of the shoe that I got: insole and outsole width: 8.4 cm. Insole length: max, at second toe: 23.4 cm, at the big toe: 22.7 cm. Outsole length: at the second toe: 24.1 cm, at the big toe: 23 cm. (these are difficult to measure, as the soles are very moon shaped. Standing on the insole, the top of my foot extends over the insole in all directions. This is not surprising given that the SHOE measurements barely match the lowest range of the recommended FOOT measurements for this size. I understand that the leather stretches, but this seems excessively small. Either Softstar sent me the wrong shoe size by accident and did not recognize this mistake in later communications with me, or there is an issue with how they measure or shape their shoes. Additionally, I will point out that I remember trying on a friend's new 7U ballet flats a few years back and they felt really loose—I am not sure if the model has changed this dramatically over time, or if sizing up really wouldn't resolve my issue and I would basically need a 6.5 shoe. My experience wearing the shoes: At first, trying them with the insoles, I could barely fit my feet in them (the insoles are really thick, another thing to keep in mind if you're looking for more minimalist shoes). I emailed customer support and was told that the leather may need some stretching out and that the shoe should be relatively snug, given that it's a ballet flat. I sent some pictures and was told that the length seems fine, though maybe I could try a wider shoe. The shoe fit around the heel and mid-foot was good, so I was nervous about trying a wider shoe. As I was due to leave for vacation for a while and really wanted a pair of flats with me, I decided to give the original shoes a try, especially as I was already wearing them around the house to try breaking them in and wasn't sure if I would receive the full refund (many reviews also note they're a bit tight in the toebox and loosen up with a few wears). Taking out the very thick insole did make the shoes fit better. However, my toes were constantly chafing against the inside leather seam, something I hoped would get better over time. I've been wearing these shoes for the summer and they do fit a bit better, but my big toes consistently push against the front of the shoe (still with some chafing), and overall my toes feel very constrained (which I believe contributed to the twisting of my ankles, something that I found happens to me with shoes that do not allow for natural foot movement). When wearing the shoes, you can clearly see the outlines of all of my toes, which extend a bit awkwardly over the outsole that is shaped very differently than my foot. At this point, I will likely try to gift the shoes to a friend rather than continue wearing them because they are definitely not 'oh so comfortable.' My advice to anyone considering these shoes, especially if you're in between sizes or your foot is longest at the big toe, is to purchase these in a larger size and, ideally, to allow time for one or more exchanges, just in case. I also hope that in the future Softstar improves its sizing guide, accounting for different foot shapes, and maybe considers introducing half-sizes.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you Sanja for taking the time to detail your experience. Agree a 6W would be better, or a 7U with the sport strap is probably the best solution, although it does make the shoe less formal. Please see your email for a personal follow-up.

These are the most comfortable and well-made ballet flats I've ever owned. They felt quite snug when I first tried them on, and I was worried I'd gotten the wrong size, but they weren't stiff or painful, and a little time walking around in them quickly stretched the toe box enough for comfort. Trust the Softstar sizing guide - my usual shoe size is between a women's 6.5 and 7, and size 6U fits like a pair of ballet shoes custom-made for me. I bought the version with the sport clip, and I like the extra security it provides, plus I think it's actually rather elegant.

I've had five pair of Ballerines through two design changes. First, I like the more durable heel design. The first pair I had wore through on the outside of the right shoe (likely influenced by driving). I think the new design will slow that down. Second, I bought two new pair in the spring of 2022 and the toe box seems roomier which I appreciate. I had to pull the insoles out of my second and third pairs for my toes to fit. That isn't an issue with the newest design even though they have a cushy insole. My third pair did significantly detach from the sole but I am planning to pick up some shoe glue and attempt to fix it or take them in to the store the next time I am in town to see if they have any advice on that problem. Overall, I like these shoes a lot and like the simple look of them and that they are comfortable.

I bought these shoes for a work trip to a big tradeshow. I wore them for three days straight, standing most of the day, and walking 12,000+ steps a day. They are so comfortable and soft; no painful rubbing even after wearing them for hours. I was a little nervous because I sometimes wear a 6.5, but since you don't have half sizes, I measured myself and got the 6. They felt a little tight in the toe box at first (like my toes were touching the top of the shoe), but they stretched a bit after a few wears and are perfect. I got them in black but am now thinking about asking for another fun color for my birthday. These are great!
  47. Bit worried about the durability

    Rating

I love how they feel. Incredibly comfy. I got the coffee colored ones, that has two colors: a dark heel and lighter foot. In reality the brown color of the shoe was darker than on the picture. I’ve noticed, from the first day of wearing them all day long and walking a lot, that the rubbery white line between the shoe and the sole (I think it’s glue) is coming off. Like a hair tie that is becoming loosely over time. So I used scissors to snip off the parts that were sticking out. For now it seems that the shoe is still strongly connected to the sole, and I hope it stays that way. It does feel good, the idea that these shoes give me the earthly negative ions the body needs

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thanks Milana for your review. We look forward to hearing more from you on durability as you continue to wear them. The rubbery white line is the glue line around the edges of the sole which will wear off in the first week or two. It does not impact the durability at all! We have changed suppliers recently for our sole bonding which will eliminate this cosmetic feature in the future.

When they arrived, I immediately noticed how the soles were glued to the leather... glue beads were all along the seam. I could not believe it. I definitely could not wear these $175 shoes. I am very very disappointed. Waiting for the customer support to resolve the issue for me.

I can walk forever in them and I can wear them to work. I am so thrilled to have discovered these shoes. The only issue I had was a lot of excess glue around the sole, but I can live with that minor imperfection for my feet to be happy.

I have worn SoftStars and only SoftStars for over 9 years. This new style is so different than the orginal ones. They are shorter and that may be due to the heel redesign. They were to narrow and the toe of the shoe was lined with solid leather even though I ordered the light leather. I am sad to say that they are no longer the Soft Star shoes I have worn and loved for so long. If you are new to them you may love these but with so many changes to their shoes and the designs, soles and insoles they seem very far from that true minimalist brand that I have loved for so long.

These shoes are so soft, beautiful, and well made. The wide is the perfect width and accommodates my bunion, a rare find. They would go with everything, if only they came in my size! I wear women's 6.5 EE in most shoes, so I ordered a wide 6 and 7, but the 7 was so big it was falling off in the back and the 6 was so small it was pinching my toes too much to wear. Customer service was super nice and suggested ways to stretch them a bit, but it wasn't enough. I wanted it to work so badly I even took them to a cobbler, but he said even he wouldn't be able to stretch them enough, I just really need the half size. My feet are so hard to fit and these shoes are so close and would be a true game changer if they fit, it is so disappointing! PLEASE make half sizes and I will buy 3 pairs immediately and be a customer for life!

These shoes are perfect. Like others have said, they look equally good with jeans or dresses. The craftsmanship is so high quality that I expect them to last for a long time. I have very short, very wide feet and they have plenty of room in the toe box (after I stretched them overnight by stuffing a hand towel into each one). They didn't rub the back of my ankle, they didn't require breaking in, and they don't slip off my feet when walking. If you're looking to cut down on the number of shoes you own, this shoe is a wise investment.

So I have 2 pairs of Softstar shoes....the Merry Jane in which I wear a 9, which is probably my typical size, and the Summer Solstice sandal in which I wear an 8 (they were recommended as ordering a smaller size)...both pairs are wonderful. With the ballerine flats, I first ordered a 9.....the reviews said some people found them a little tight, and tried stretching them....I found mine tight as well, and with the price of the shoe, was concerned about taking too long trying to stretch them and not having them be returnable. I sent them back to exchange them for a 10....and they are perfect!! They have more room and don't slip off at all. OK, so I was looking for American made shoes because I no longer wanted to wear shoes made by Chinese slaves. I thought that I would give these a try. It took 3 times to find the correct size, but when I did, WOW! I've had a neuroma/capsulation for years, and a bunion starting on one foot. For the record, I have always worn good shoes and never worn shoes that were too short. And yet, I still had damaged my feet. Within 3 days of wearing the Ballerine I no longer felt the neuroma/capsulation. After 1 week, I noticed that the big toe was lining up correctly when walking barefoot. We had a solid week of rain last week, so I broke out some old shoes to go out. Within 2 hours the numbness and the "lump" feeling from the neuroma/capsulation was back. I'll be building up a wardrobe of Ballerines, and trying other Softstar styles! These are the best shoes money can buy. Order a pair. Swap them out until you get the right fit. You won't be sorry.

  78. New model sizing differences

    Rating

I am happy with the new model, because the old model required me to put in a flat insole to raise my foot up enough so the heel didnt hurt me. The new model’s lower heel is comfy for me. However, the length of the shoe inside is definitely shorter and narrower in the new model. I have a 9U in the old model and a 9U in the new model. My big toe is all the way at the front of the shoe and has zero room in the new ones, whereas the old ones never felt too small. I decided to order another pair of new ones in 9U Wide instead of going up to 10U. The new 9U Wide actually are significantly longer than the new 9U, so my big toe is a comfortable distance from the front of the shoe. However, they really are WiDE. I anticipated the issue of them being too wide for my narrowish feet by getting a pair with the sport strap. I thought the strap would be adjustable, but i can’t figure out how to tighten it and it’s way too loose. If i could tighten the strap i would have a very comfy (albeit slightly loose and floppy) shoe that stays on my foot and doesnt hurt my toes.

I purchased these shoes as soon as they became available. I chose Latte because it seemed perfect for spring! I had the earlier version of the ballet slippers, which I also love. This time I decided to go with a regular width instead of wide, because the shoes are advertised as having more room in the toebox. I took a few weeks to see how they feel, and I think they are great. I wear the wider ones with socks and might still buy the wide for winter purposes, but these are great for spring and summer without socks. They are so soft and easy to wear, and I have no problem with slippage. Great shoe! I recommend it highly.

    Rating

I have these for a week or two now, and I love them. These are my first pair of Ballerines and the leather is buttery soft with a good heft to it. The toe box is low, but the soft leather stretches easily, so a little paper stuffed in there for a day or two and it isn't an issue any more. The elastic is very gentle....just enough to hold on to your foot, but not enough to be annoying, or even cause discomfort, like the pair of 'JJ' barefoot ball flats I replaced with these Ballerines. The heel is very comfortable, something I could not say about the 'other' shoes. The toe on these is not as wide as the Primal Merry Janes I have, but for certain occasions, only a more traditional shoe will do and these fit the bill for that and are still great for everyday work wear. As for the fit, I ordered the 6U in the regular width and find them too narrow to wear with Correct Toes. At some point, they may be roomy enough, but not yet. I purchased the Latte color which is a light beige with a creamy ivory trim. They almost disappear on my feet and go with everything. So glad I took the plunge!

I still have my first pair of black ballet flats that I purchased 5 years ago. It did take about 6-9 months for my feet to be used to walking in minimalist shoes. This year I added sheepskin sole to wear with my oldest pair during border seasons. Last year I purchased the ballet flats with the sports strap, which makes them more comfortable for walking a couple miles. April of 2021, I ordered the new design. It is more comfortable for my toes and will take less time to break-in. The old design looked a tiny bit better but the extra toe room was worth the design update. I hope Softstar keeps making these shoes for the rest of my life!

I like the new redesign and hope these shoes will last longer and wear less on the back. Might be nice to have the black reinforcement extend a little around the sides of the heel. My Ballerines wear quickly on the back right side of the of the right shoe. Probably from driving. Also, my usual size is an 8U and that's what I got but these are tight! The insole used is many times thicker than the old style. I had to remove the insoles to make them wearable.

I bought three pairs of the Ballerine shoes. I love the look and the softness -- it's like wearing socks. They still could use more toe room, and I'm storing them with balled-up socks in the toes for some stretching. But eventually I gave in, measured my feet according to the instructions, and ordered a minimalist black pair to begin with. Why did I wait so long?! They are perfect! So comfortable, flattering and versatile. I have no complaints whatsoever. I will wear them dressed up (for events) and dressed down, for anything else. I’m thinking of ordering another in a different colour, and keeping these ones for more dressy wear. I was disappointed to read about the new updated style, with the rubber at the back of the heel, though, as they don’t look as easy to dress up as the old style! I imagine this will limit their use? Why change something that already works?!

    Rating

I have several pairs of the old ballerina shoes. The new ones are described as wider but I didn't find that to be so. I started with one size down in a regular width as that is what fit my measurements, but that was way too tight so I exchanged for my usual size. It still fits much more snugly than the old ballerinas in the toe box. They put extra reinforcement leather at the heel and on the sides of the toe box so overall the shoe feels narrower and shorter. Perhaps they will stretch, but I like to have my toes spread out and don't want to squish them.

I used to wear ballet flats out of necessity when I needed a nice looking shoe that wasn't high-heeled (never liked heels), but the flats were never much better, what with the toe-crunching and heel rubbed raw. These are so different! And comfortable! I probably could have gone up a size and been fine, but I like the semi-snug fit (6U, regular width). They don't feel like I could kick my foot out and have the shoe go flying (it happened with a regular flat), and they don't rub at the heel. Looking forward to putting them through their paces!
  91. Stretching the shoes helped

    Rating

I watched the video and read the reviews before committing to this purchase. I selected a size 8U for the 2020 Ballerines instead of sizing up. My feet are long and narrow at 39-40 European size, and I worried that the Ballerines would be too loose and flop in 9U. I did experience the discomfort at the heel other customers described when trying them on right out of the box. I followed the advice of stuffing the toe box with socks and stretching the leather with shoe trees overnight. After 1 day, there was a noticeable improvement in the fit. I continued the stretching process for 2 more days and am wearing the shoes comfortably during the first week of receipt. I hope that opting for the smaller size will prevent the sagging heel issue described by others.
  92. Wide is perfect with Correct Toes

    Rating

I typically do not wear a wide shoe even though I have bunions and bunionettes on both feet. I wear Correct Toes every day. My feet would not fill out the wide width without Correct Toes. I was concerned that the heel would slip due to wide width, but the back of the shoe comes up higher than a normal ballet flat. This is absolute genius. I had no rubbing or break in time. I typically wear a size 7 in women's, though I measure at 6.5. I think a size down would have been too crowded when wearing Correct Toes. These are a go-to for my informal but still business casual office and for warmer weather. They offer quality leather and a truly barefoot feel. The soles seem durable. I haven't worn then in wet weather and plan to treat before doing so. I would definitely purchase again.
  93. Love these!

They look nice and have more room in the toe box than traditional ballet flats. Before these, I’ve never found a pair that don’t rub on the heel before these, either. They feel great!
  94. The best ever

    Rating

Love, love, love these shoes! It is so hard to find shoes that fit my wide, bony feet yet don't constantly fall off the heel. These are incredibly comfortable, I can (and have) walked for miles in them. I have two pairs, the first I sized looser and they are great but have a little bunching going on. I tried the smaller size with my next pair and preferred that, but both are great. Will surely be buying more. Yay Softstar!

  96. Love Ballerines!

    Rating

This is my 3rd pair of ballerines - I’ve been eyeing up the oxblood color for awhile and finally caved - and I’m so glad I did. The color is really gorgeous. I typically order the 9U but decided to go with the 10 in this case - I wanted just a bit more room for my toes. There is a little bit of a breaking in period (for me, at least) back by the heel, but once that happens the ballerines have been some of the most comfortable shoes I own. I know I’ll be ordering more in the future!
  97. So happy with these

    Rating

I read reviews before I ordered and was worried about two things: the heel digging into me and causing pain, and the fact that these don’t come in a narrow size for my narrow feet. However, I’m glad I ordered them anyway to try because they are fantastic for my needs. They look like normal ballet flats, so I can wear them to my office without raising eyebrows. I haven’t found feminine flats by any other barefoot brands that don’t look cheesy (whereas nice looking boots and sneakers are much easier to find by comparison). Also, you can get these in almost any color — score! I will be ordering more. My narrow feet do not fill out the width of the shoe, but it doesn’t matter because they stay on fine (I don’t have a strap on mine) and look good. The shoe DOES dig into my heel, as many have mentioned, but that was an easy fix for me. I put a little Amope sticky gel heel pad at the back of the insole. I have a low instep and shallow heels, so this pad raises my heel up just high enough to stop any digging or discomfort. This means that i no longer have a “zero drop” shoe, but that is fine for me since my most important goals with barefoot shoes are giving my toes enough room to spread out, and avoiding unnecessary cushion under my feet.
  98. Love my shoes

    Rating

I absolutely love my Ballerine flats with the sports closure! I was nervous about sizing and typically don't order online shoes or clothing because of that, but these fit perfectly. I have pretty wide feet and typically wear a 7.5 or 8 wide. I ordered the bigger size and am very happy with the fit. They actually have a little room to adjust since they are sort of stretchy. Also, my toes have plenty of room to spread out nicely and they are so so comfortable. Very glad I bought them.

  100. Comfy but not the most durable SoftStar

    Rating

The flats are great, comfortable, easy to wear. But the uppers will wear out long before the soles. Every pair we've had has split the leather where the toe meets the sole. This isn't so surprising for a close-fitting shoe built of supple leather, but be aware that for the price you won't have nearly the robustness of a RunAmoc, which might survive 2 resolings if you're lucky.

    Rating

These are SO comfortable and absolutely amazing quality soft leather. I expect these to last me for years. I’m usually a size 8 with shoes, but I got a 9U Softstar sizing and they fit well. At first they seemed too big and loose, but they shaped to my feet and now they fit great. I do wish the heals were designed a bit differently and fit more snuggly right at the bottom - there’s some extra material there and it’s not the nicest look or feel while driving and resting on the heal, for example. I got the burgundy, and the colour does bleed through quite badly - so if you get a dark colour, be warned. I’m hoping that after a few months of regular wear I’ll not experience colour bleeding.

I wore my last pair of Ballerines for 7 years constantly and until they started coming unsewn. They've traveled the world with me and ordering a new pair last month was like reconnecting with an old friend. They're my favorite shoes because my feet are never tired in them.
  104. Crazy comfortable

    Rating

they feel like house slippers or something, so comfortable. Like a cloud. I feel healthier wearing them. I wore them on a 4-mile hike even! (under dry conditions) And they look like pretty normal ballet flats. I've tried the "bigger" sizing suggested in their sizing video and found them to be fine though a tiny bit floppy looking. Also tried the smaller suggested sizing on a later pair, and preferred that--the toe box felt a little constricted (though still way less than other shoes) at first but eased up (after a week or two)

The best ballet flats out there

    Rating

The Ballerine is by far the best looking and most comfortable barefoot flats I own (I own a few pairs from other barefoot/minimalist brands)! The leather is super soft but durable and I love the construction of it because the shoes hug my feet comfortably and securely without pinching. Many complain about the initial chafing of the taller back of the shoes so that needs a little bit of time to break in, but it's really nothing compared to other leather shoes. I wear 6U in the Dash (normally US6.5) and have some extra room in the toe box so I ordered the Ballerine in 6U and it fits perfectly. I'm glad I didn't size up. Hope this is helpful to anyone deciding.
  106. Butter on my feet

    Rating

I looked and looked and looked at these shoes for over a year. I was hesitant to spend so much money on ballet flats, but I finally decided supporting a small, sustainable business hand making shoes was worth taking the plunge and spending the extra money. And let me tell you... these shoes are worth EVERY penny. I never knew shoes could be so luxurious and soft and so well made. They truly feel like butter and move so well with the natural movements of my feet.
  107. The most beautiful shoes!

    Rating

I fell in love with the Ballerine at first sight. But nothing compares to the day they finally arrived, in my favorite colors, ready to be mine. I’ve been wearing them for some time now and I’m blown away. It’s clear the materials and craftsmanship are so far superior to any shoes I’ve ever seen, they’re in a class all their own. Well, a class for all SoftStar shoes. ???? I’ve worn them good and long- barefoot- and there are no sores on my feet! No discomfort anywhere. I wouldn’t change a thing! I appreciate the process we all went through to get to where we are, though. The first pair I returned because they were just too snug. So when I ordered the next size up, I also requested the Sport Closure be a little larger. The Elves put it together just right. These folks know what they’re doing!! I absolutely will be buying more SoftStar shoes, as I have a large family and I cannot imagine ever buying shoes from anywhere else. I’m pleased with the several other shoes SoftStar has made for my family. God bless you wonderful Elves!

  114. Softstar has impressed

    Rating

Love these shoes, I bought an 11U and a 12U. The size chart and video are spot on. I like the bigger size slightly better, it’s just a tad more roomy and comfortable although the smaller size broke in just fine. The toe box area is perfectly spacious and allows my feet to spread out just right. I wasn’t really aware of the barefoot type of shoe but was looking for something better for my feet and knees. Softstar has impressed I can wear these all day.
  115. My only complaint is that I hadn’t discovered these sooner!

I received my first pair of Ballerines last week and I’m very impressed. These would be my second pair of ballerina flats and these are actually what I had hoped for all along. The leather is very soft and comfortable, the fit is perfect( I recommend watching the video), and the styling is great. I appreciate that they are minimal by design but not to an extreme. I wore them nearly all day running errands and my only complaint is that I hadn’t discovered these sooner. Very happy that these are offered in sizes that include men , thank you very much. The customer service at Softstar is outstanding. Everything has been exactly as advertised, honest and genuine.
  116. Holy Grail Dress Shoes

    Rating

The elves were incredibly helpful as I tried to figure out my correct size for this particular shoe (7U, a size down from what my foot measures). They fit a bit snug to start with and as comfy as the comfiest slippers because the leather is so supple. That plus the sole gives me a true barefoot feel. My toes don't clench at all, even without a strap to hold them on--something about the design really does hold them to the feet well. I always hoped ballet flats would be an option for professional-looking shoes that are good for my feet, but they never were, until these. This is my second shoe from SoftStar (first was the unbelievably warm and comfy Phoenix Boot), and I can't say enough about the company and their products.

  118. I’ve never worn such comfortable (and cute) flats!

    Rating

I’ve never worn such comfortable (and cute) flats! My toe box is a wide width and my heels are on the narrow range so I ordered this shoe in a wide to accommodate my toes. My toes fit perfectly on the sole of the shoe and my narrower heel still stays in the shoe while walking which is amazing. I’m thrilled and can’t wait to get another pair, next time I’ll try the sport strap!
  119. Fit issues

    Rating

My roos are narrow, so I was skeptical about these shoes. Sure enough, my feet don't properly fill out the shoe, but since I bought the sport enclosure it's not much of a problem. After wearing these shoes for a few hours, they started really digging into my achilles. This is my second soft star disappointment.
  120. I have three pairs of Ballerines now, two with straps and one without.

    Rating

I just adore these shoes, they are AMAZING! They go with everything! I wear mine with long and short skirts, capris, cargo pants, dresses, jeans....), they look great accompanying sportswear, or casual, or formal outfits. I've never met a shoe that's so comfortable that truly looks great in so many different scenarios. You could wear it to yoga or the opera. The ability to custom design your own colors is incredible - my inner twelve-year old is delighting in my pair of yellow ballerines, even though admittedly my wardrobe may not call for yellow flats that often. But who cares, I'm happy! For minimalists, a single black pair could probably work for 97% of your wardrobe most days out of the year (depending on where you live). The fit is wonderful, although I order my normal size, rather than go up as the video suggests. All of my Ballerines are a size 9. I've been a consistent women's size 10 in shoes for the last 25 years. My normal brands have been Birkenstock, Keen, Naot, Chaco, Teva, and Converse. My foot is just slightly wide, and my toe shape is "Egyptian". I find the Softstar size 9 (a women's 10) to be perfect. I've tried on the size 10 (women's 11) a couple of times now, and they are a bit baggy - especially in the heel, enough that I know they'd likely slip off after they'd expanded with a few days of wear. With the Softstar size 9's, the shoes are comfortable when I get them, and then stretch slightly with wear. The pair I have without straps are great, secure for nearly everything. The ones with the sport strap are basically perfect, I'd wear them anywhere. I could run in them, they won't fall off. If a perfect shoe is one that pairs beautifully with well over half of your outfits, then this is the perfect shoe, in my opinion. :)

    Update: excellent!

    Rating

I reviewed these shoes a few months ago after they showed a lot of wear and tear within just a few months of receiving them. The leather scuffs easily, and one of the soles quickly started peeling away from the toe of the shoe. The elves immediately contacted me because the delaminated sole was covered under the Happy Feet Guarantee. Not only did they quickly send me a new pair of shoes, but they also offered suggestions for repairing the damaged sole. So, now I have exceptionally comfortable shoes that are backed by an exceptional company. I'm so impressed by the customer service. I'm also impressed by the shoes, which keep my feet feeling light and happy.

    Rating

These shoes are so valuable to me! I started wearing minimalist shoes about two years ago and the only ones I could find at first were athletic shoes. Then I found Softstar ballerines and I have worn them practically every day since I got them. They are so beautiful and fit my needs as a performer and university music teacher perfectly. I am on my feet teaching a lot during the day and I really value a beautiful pair of minimalist shoes (I have the gold ones.) And then when I am not teaching, I do a lot of performing, and they can go from professional to super fancy in an instant!
  124. So comfortable! Not especially durable.

    Rating

The awesome: these shoes are exceptionally comfortable, with or without socks. The cork insole is lovely, and the shoes don't get stinky if worn without socks. They stay on, they have plenty of toe-wiggle room, and they weigh next to nothing. I like that they dress up or down easily. The less awesome: within the month that I first wore the shoes, the sole started peeling away from the toe of one shoe. I suppose I tripped or caught it on something, but I've never had this happen with a pair of shoes before. Also, the leather scuffs very easily with normal daily use. Some leather cleaner camouflages it well, thankfully. The need-to-know: I measured my feet and fell solidly at the smaller end of 7U. As suggested, I sized up to 8U because I knew I was looking for a more relaxed fit. Even that ended up being too small! A 9U is a perfect size for winter wear with socks. (8U might have been ok for sockless wearing after being fully stretched out.)

    The best ballet flats

    Rating

These quickly became my favorite flats! After starting to run in zero drop shoes, my dressy "flats" started to feel like cramped platform shoes and I needed a replacement. The ballerine flats are so comfortable and I love how packable they are. So far I've worn them during a conference (12-14 hour days, mostly on my feet) and they take up almost no space in the 13l pack I use for run commuting. Fit: I run in women's 8.5 Altras and my other street shoes are size 38 Vivobarefoot boots. My measurements were right between a 6U and 7U, and the 7U ended up being the better choice. I have narrow, low volume feet and the toebox immediately felt like a good fit. My heels don't touch the back of the footbed even though the elastic fits snugly - while I also have this problem with most climbing shoes too, it feels like there's more dead space in the heel than any other shoe I've tried. I ordered them without the sport strap and they do stay on my feet pretty well.

They feel like super short socks, while still protecting my feet from hot pavement and gravel paths. Perfect for work and play. I wear them every day now.
  131. Disappointing

    Rating

I really wanted to love these shoes. In fact, I’ve had my eye on them for ages—but I have been deeply disappointed. These are not particularly comfortable or well made. The toe box feels small. Technically, my foot fits this shoe perfectly— but the leather is cut in such a way that it pushes my foot into the toe box, while leaving a ton of unoccupied space in the heel. Given the design of the shoe, I’m not sure how else they would stay on. They are cute—but if I wanted cute uncomfortable flats that crushed my toes, I could easily go elsewhere outside the barefoot shoe world for a fraction of the cost. Additionally, there’s a thin strip of some kind of rubbery glue that runs along the outside of the sole. The glue is white and the sole is black, so it’s quite noticeable. After one wear, this glue started to come loose and stick off the end of the shoe. I’ve only had them for a couple of weeks, so it remains to be seen as to whether this will undermine their structural integrity—but frankly they are so awkward to wear, it wouldn’t feel like much of a loss. Except, of course, for the price tag. - Unverified Review-
  132. These are the most insanely comfortable, aesthetically fabulous, scrumptious flats I've ever owned.

    Rating

I'm in love with every aspect of these shoes except their durability. These are the most insanely comfortable, aesthetically fabulous, scrumptious flats I've ever owned. The leather is truly buttery. I walked like seven miles on day 1, and forgot I was wearing shoes. My only gripe is their durability for the price. I wouldn't necessarily want to pay less (I think we're willing to pay for great footwear if we're here), but I expect improved aesthetic and functional durability for the price. For instance, within the first 7 wears or so, the leather at the toe and heel began to scuff. It's because the leather upper wraps all the way down to the sole. But it's a drag when you want your beautiful upper to remain beautiful! I wish there could be something rubber buffering the leather from the effects of walking surfaces. Now, I've had them for a bit over a year (seasonal wearing - being an upper Midwesterner with cold and wet winters). I recently noticed that the glue around the sole is coming off. I previously had a pair of Campers' leather ballets, and although I prefer Softstar on every other front, Camper definitely won in terms of durability. It's almost enough to consider going back for my next pair - it would be excellent to learn that they are addressing the durability issue!
  133. Adorable - but sizing didn't work

    Rating

These shoes are adorable and seem like they would be incredibly comfortable if the sizing were just right. My normal size was painfully tight (I couldn't even straighten out my foot in them), but the next size up was huge. Half sizes would be a big help with fit. I want to love these shoes, but am a little disappointed considering the price.
  134. Lovely crafstmanship

    Rating

I love these ballet flats - the leather is soft, they are very comfortable, and the design is so simple but beautiful. I would have given these a 5 star review, however, I find that the rear of the shoe behind the heel rides up too far. I had read this about the shoes before purchasing in another site so was prepared for this. I think if SSS were to fix this issue they would be a hands down 5 star A+ product :)

  136. Lightweight and easy to move-in-I love these shoes !

    Rating

I love these shoes. I recently started my minimalist shoe journey and these are the first pair I could actually wear to work. They are so light weight and easy to move in and really mold to my feet. I like the fact that I can feel variations in the pavement, rocks, grass if I am walking on different surfaces. I also like that there was no blister “break in” period despite the fact that I wear them without socks (& they don’t smell!) I’m a bit nervous to wear them in the rain because I feel like they would be ruined - the glue is already coming off in a little strip at the front - but from reading other reviews it appears this does not affect their durability. If I could afford it I would get a pair of these in many many colors!

  139. Never had a comfortable pair of flats before these - glad I took the risk

    Rating

I've never had a pair of flats that were actually comfortable before so I took a risk buying these online without trying them on, but these things are great. The leather is flexible, they are truly flat, and move with my foot as they should. The backs come up high enough to stay on without having to scrunch my toes or do anything weird to keep my shoes on. I was concerned the high backs might make them cut in or blister after awhile, but so far that hasn't been the case. Katy Bowman's enthusiastic promotion of this brand finally got me, and I'm glad for it:) I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I really love my ballerina flats. I’d been looking for ages as I love barefoot shoes but really wanted a pair which looked good with a skirt. Finally I decided to order these and they fill the bill perfectly. They look simple and attractive, fit really well and give an authentic barefoot, feel-the-ground experience. I was so excited I overdid it and walked miles in them for the first few days and strained my foot, so do start gently but now I can wear them everywhere and everyday. In fact I’m about to order a red pair to supplement my sensible black first pair.

    Rating

I love these flats! They are the only minimalist shoe I've been able to find that I can wear to work. They are incredibly comfortable and professional-looking. My only qualm is that the heel is a little too wide for my feet. But the band keeps the shoes comfortably on my feet. I don't walk out of them even with the wide spot; I am impressed!
  143. These are my new favorite shoes!

    Rating

I was looking for some flexible, comfortable flats that would look good for wearing to work and with skirts and dresses. Preferably zero-drop, minimalist shoes like I've fallen in love with for sneakers, but a non-"weird" appearance was a key criterion. I got the black ones with the sport strap, because I also historically have problems with flats slipping. I usually wear a women's 8.5 and measured just under the upper end of the 7U range--I decided to size up to the 8U. These shoes are ridiculously comfortable--they're like slippers/the next best thing to being barefoot. The soles are very thin and flexible, and there's no toe curl or anything; the entire sole sits flat on the floor when you set them down. They stay on my feet easily without slipping, and I don't think they're relying on the straps to do that--I tried flipping the straps to the bottom, and they still seemed to stay on pretty well. They're very cute, but not so fancy that I feel weird slipping them on with casual clothes, either. I've had them about a month and a half now, and worn them to work fairly frequently. Right out of the box, they seemed oddly tight against the tops of my big toes compared to other shoes. It wasn't uncomfortable per se, but did feel weird and made me question the fit. I'm not sure whether the leather has stretched slightly to fit my toes better or if I've just gotten used to that fit, but it doesn't bother me any more. I am glad that I sized up rather than down--I don't think I'd want them to be tighter than they are. I was also surprised that there more extra space around my heel (on the sides) than expected, but it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I struggle to find comfortable shoes that I can wear in formal settings, because I don’t wear heels or shoes that confine my toes. These shoes work very well. I had a bit of chafing on the top of my foot when I was walking a lot in these, but I put some socks on which fixed it (they didn’t look as formal then though). I bought the black color with the black strap and I think it looks nice. I’ve only had them for about a month, so I can’t speak to their durability.
  145. My balance has improved and I feel stronger

    Rating

I have happy feet with my Softstar ballerina shoes - flat, wide and flexible. My posture became upright - ankles, knees, pelvis, shoulders, neck and head. I felt stronger. As a 75 year old woman falling is a fear. But with my Softstar shoes my balance has improved and I feel stronger. Thanks to all the elves.
  146. Soft and Comfotable

    Rating

I normally wear an 8 1/2 but the 8 fits perfect. They were a little snug on my toes at first but within a day they fit comfortably. The leather is soft but not thin. I like that the leather comes higher on the back of my heel. They don’t slip off. I totally love them!
  147. Great purchase

    Rating

I bought my first pair of ballerines in 2015 and just recently purchased a second pair. The first pair is holding up well (I wear them only a few times a year on dressy occasions) and are super comfortable with or without correct toes. They stay on with no slipping. I bought a 9U and typically wear a women's 10.5 in Altra and a 43 in Lems. They were snug at first and I broke them in by wearing them around the house with my correct toes in. I was worried the first few days that they were too small, but they quickly stretched and conformed and now fit amazing!

  149. I wish I didn't wait so long to get these. I love them.

    Rating

All I can say is I wish I didn't wait so long to get these. I love them. Soft, comfortable, they look like a traditional flat but feel like slippers and don't cause blisters. They dress up well and my wide width doesn't restrict toes much (my toe bed is very wide). I love wearing these "slippers" to church! I will be buying more.
  150. The video was right, and they are perfect.

    Rating

I have very wide, low volume feet. Like a waterfowl. I watched the sizing video, which suggested that if I owned another pair of Softstar shoes (I do, the Merry Janes) and I felt they were borderline width-wise, I should order the ballet flats in "wide". I did exactly that and... Ta-da! They knew what they were saying. My 7U' Wides are perfect. Zero breaking in time needed. I took them out of the box, put them on and wore them all day. Thanks for these fantastic shoes.
  151. Best ballerina flats ever!

    Rating

I’ve tried ballerina flats from other companies and none of them felt anywhere near as good as these do. I’m a size 8U regular width in the Merry Janes which fit perfectly on my wide feet and went up to a size 9 (regular width) in the ballerinas with the sports enclosure which was perfect! Super comfy and cute with any outfit, worth every penny :)
  152. Great shoes

    Rating

These are extremely comfortable, though you might want a little more cushioning if you are walking distance several hours. For general use though, these are great. No hot spots, no blisters, no squeezing, very lightweight, almost like wearing slippers, just socially acceptable looking. These look perfectly fine in a business setting - I applied polish occasionally for a little sheen and to get the scuffs out. They will eventually wear out, though. The leather around the heel touches the ground and eventually wore through at that point. It took a few years, though, so I'm not complaining.
  153. most comfortable shoes I ever owned but issue with my sole

    Rating

I first have to say this about the company before getting into my review; I love the minimalist shoes Softstar has to offer and my husband has loved his Dash shoes. What they do here is rare and very hard to find especially with their flexibility and different designs. It is very hard to find shoes made out of natural materials and dies so the shoes here are very special. What I loved about the ballet flats was that, once they were broken in, they were the most comfortable pair of shoes I owned. It did take well over a month to break them in and I got these shoes for the type of job I have, one requiring me to be on my feet for 8 hours but in business attire. My heals had blisters and it took months for them to heal. How high the heal is on shoes was a problem for me as well as how it seems as if the edge of the heal goes inward instead of outward, so it would just tear directly into the skin of my heal. Once my heals healed and the leather stretched I had no other problems, but there were other issues. Being on my feet constantly, I needed shoes that looked like a flat, but could take abuse. These shoes started to fall apart almost after 2 weeks of owning them. The glue that attached the sole to the shoe started to wear and separate. I had no issues with the sole itself, I wore them all day and there was no holes forming there, and the body of the shoe held up great. I have really bad bunions and usually the first spot of a shoe to go bad for me is right where my bunion protrudes. The leather did its job and stretched with my feet. My biggest issue with this show has to be the binding of the shoe to the sole. I have worn these till the sole is literally flapping off the shoe almost like a clown shoe and it’s disheartening. I love how this was one the most comfortable shoes I owned and how it is the first that actually gave me no problems with my bunions, but after only 6 months they became unwearable. The leather held up beautifully as did the sole but the glue did not cut it. I wish I can get them resoled, maybe there’s a way, but if Softstar could fix this issue, these shoes would be perfect. It’s a somewhat fatal flaw since everything else held up so well. I wish you could get the stitched bull hide on these, I think that would solve it. My husband runs is his Dash quite frequently and has had no issues with his sole coming off. I really love your products but these shoes just were not reliable enough for my needs. I would even pay extra for the bull hide option. I know shoe making is a skill and I don’t mind paying for quality. All in all if you need a shoe to wear maybe once a week, these will be great, although keep in mind it will take a month to break them in, but for day to day use they fell apart too quickly.

I took the chance. I am SO glad I did.

    Rating

Updated 1/2/2020: Hi, elves! I am reaching out to you because I wanted to update a 2 star review I left in March of last year to a 4 star review. I had tried some ballerines last March but they just didn’t work for me. When I tried before, the 6U was too small and the 7U was too big. I am usually a women’s 6.5 and am a 6U in the Merry Janes. I wanted to give the ballerines another shot because I so badly wanted them to work. They are cute and are perfect for my business casual work attire. Since you had a clearance sale, and one in the Oxblood color in a size 7U I have been drooling over for about a year, I took the chance. I am SO glad I did. They feel almost just right this time. I am breaking them in at work and, outside a little heel rubbing, they feel like I am wearing socks. No slipping and almost no pain. Original Review March 2019: These shoes are beautiful and made out of soft, supple leather. They comfortably fit the forefront of my feet without cramping my toes. They fit wonderful everywhere except for my heels. OUCH. The rise of the back of the heel is so high, it cuts into my achilles tendon. I wore the shoes for a couple of minutes in my home after receiving them and already had a blister forming and my right leg felt like it was going numb. The heel was forcing my foot forward, despite all the room at the back of the shoe behind where the heel curves upward. Also, I noticed the bottom of the end of the shoe touches the ground due to the way the shoe is glued on. I wanted to love these, but knew they wouldn't work out. I will be returning them. Pros: Beautiful, soft leather, comfortable space for toes to splay naturally, forefront of feet didn't feel cramped Cons: The heel comes up too high and cuts into the achilles tendon, causes rubbing at the hell, and pushes the foot too forward into the shoe, leaving space at the back of the shoe
  156. sizing seems to have changed

    Rating

I'm so incredibly frustrated. Used to regularly purchase the ballerine with sport closure with no issues, but most recently the sizes seem to have changed. The Elves steered me towards a smaller size based on my order history, but that smaller size is so uncomfortable. The prices are also much higher than in the past -- at $185, the shoe is already expensive. But with shipping back and forth, I'm paying north of $200 and it still doesn't fit quite right.

After the kind aid of 2 elves I am now wearing my Softstar ballerinas in the right size. I'm wearing a thin shoe liner as my I break in my pair. I had a slight rubbing on my heel but I know I"m in the right size now. Successfull and happy because of the extra care the staff took with me. Thank you!

  159. Ballerines are my Favorite!

    Rating

I love these shoes. The oxblood is a fun cranberry color. They’re super comfortable, make it hard for me to wear more structured shoes now. I have ballerines in this reddish/burgundy color, royal blue, dark teal, shades of cocoa brown...and my very first pair years ago, are moss & avocado green. I wish they’d sell shoe polish to match the unique leather colors, because I couldn’t find anything to touch up the green pair when the color wore off. I tried mixing acrylic paint, but it dried a different shade. There still aren’t any holes but the dye wore off on my big toes, and they’re wearing out on the bottom. I’d still like to have a dark nutral-ish “rust” color, not bright orange, brick red, nor brown. These shoes will spoil you! It’s like wearing comfy slippers every day all day. But, they look sleek and dresssy at the same time. I’ve been collecting these several years now. Also have a pair of maryjanes with cutouts, and a pair of their open toe suede sandals.
  160. Sizing video is very accurate

I absolutely love my ballerina flats. If unsure of size what the video it is very accurate when deciding how you want your flats to fit you. I have both types - with and without the sport strap. Love both.
  161. Best Shoes Ever!

    Rating

I can't love these shoes enough! I've always worn tennis shoes at work, because if I tried to wear cute flats, I'd end up with toe cramps and hip pain. I eased in to wearing these as they suggested on their site, and now I can wear these all week at work without any pain! It was almost unbelievable to me how comfortable these shoes are - after spending a lifetime believing I needed to have all this cushion in my shoes. This is my first pair of minimalist shoes, so I can't really compare them with other minimalist styles, but I don't have a reason to look anywhere else.
  162. love 'em

    Rating

I love these shoes. I wear them 3 or 4 days per week. They are super comfy and they both fit my feet and stay on without any effort. I have wide feet, so the combination of the barefoot sole with wide sizing means that for the first time in my life I can wear ballerina flats without my foot being wider than the actual sole. My one gripe is that the back of the leather, just above the sole, rubs against the ground when I'm walking on uneven surfaces or against the floor of my car when I'm driving. I'm a bit concerned that it's going to wear out, and I would love if the sole material wrapped up a bit over the heel in the back to protect the leather. Maaaaybe I should size up, but other than this, the shoe fits perfectly.

I love my new ballerine flats. Would definitely recommend getting the sport closure. The shoes are super cute and I customized them so the go with everything. No break in period and perfect for all occasions. My toes have started widening and my gate is changing because of these shoes. I feel like I have a dirty little secret while wearing these at work because although they look like shoes, I feel like I’m wearing slippers. Very happy to have stumbled upon this rare find.

Comfortable right out of the box

    Rating

After trying and failing to find a size of the hawthorn chukkas that worked for me, I decided to try the ballet flats. My initial impression is that they are pretty comfortable right out of the box! I’m a little concerned they may stretch to be a bit big for me over time, but if that happens they’ll just be my winter pair to wear with socks! :) And then I’ll have an excuse to order another pair in the spring. I got a wide to accommodate my curly pinkie toes and then got the sports closure for security.

    I. Love. These. Shoes.

    Rating

They are so comfortable and so flexible. I wear an 8.5 in traditional shoes and ordered an 8U in the Ballerine, and they fit just fine. Lots of wiggle room for my toes. I ordered mine with the sport strap, and they are still super cute; I can wear them with dressier outfits for work, or they work fine with casual outfits as well. I loved the hand-written note that came with my order, and supporting artisans who take such care and pride in their work is a great thing. Will definitely be ordering more in the future!
  166. Hoping for a new flat style

    Rating

Note: Guest Review - Purchase not verified The quality of these shoes is excellent. Nice, soft leather. Flexible comfortable soles. But I after ordered several sizes in wide and narrow, I just couldn’t get the right fit. I really wanted to!!! I hope that these is enough of a demand, that you would consider designing a new style that might account for some of these issues. - wish these came in half sizes - wish the toe box was roomer (not so tapered - I’d prefer a sole that was more natural shaped) - new design that doesn’t push foot forward (not sure if this is due to the elastic or the way the back of the shoe is overly rounded to curve around the Achilles’ tendon - my foot is just not that rounded so it feels like the shoe pushes my foot forward, leaving space at the back of the shoe but forcing my toes to be cramped in the front).
  167. Sooo comfortable

    Rating

I measured and my foot fell exactly on the line between 8U and 9U. The elves helped me choose the 9U, and they were right-on! The 9U fits very well. The Ballerines are sooo comfortable! I got the Latte color, and so far they go with just about everything. I was also amazed that the shoes arrived on Sunday, after I ordered them on Friday. From OR to NY, no less. Thank you!
  168. Revising my previous review

    Rating

I reviewed these shoes earlier after experiencing discomfort in the heel. I had a lot of pain from the heel pressing into my ankle -- not just rubbing the skin, but creating aches that would last long after I took the shoes off. They sat in my closet for many months, unworn. Then I tried them again out of desperation to find something a bit dressier than my other Soft Stars (chukkas and sandals). I wore them around the house with socks on to stretch them out a bit. Now I'm wearing them all day with no problems! So for those of you who have this heel trouble, don't despair, you can persevere with a bit of effort! I'm so happy I gave them another try.
  169. Along with sizing, look at the shape

    Rating

I received my shoes early this week and almost sent them back to exchange because they felt way too tight. I had measured and remeasured though so I couldn't figure out what I did wrong. I decided to keep them and have them form to my feet. The shoes are the same length of my other shoes. I do not order wide shoes however my run shoes are Altras (super roomy), I wear Vibrams often, and any dress shoes I wear have a rounded toe box. That is the difference! The Ballerine has more of a tapered toe box. I think my toes are starting to move the leather to where it needs to be. Except for that, there has been no discomfort. The shoe/sole is surprisingly bouncy and is comfy to walk in. If I get another pair, and I probably will, I will figure out if I should have gone bigger. Since I have the strap I probably could have with this pair. And that is it! These are fantastic shoes but if you're like me and are used to wearing shoes that let your feet spread out, consider that along with the length for sizing.
  170. Game Changer!

    Rating

It feels like wearing nothing but also like wearing little clouds! They are soooo comfortable. I feel like I have a little bounce to my step whenever I wear these flats. They're also very flattering - I can dress them up for work or dress them down at night. A lot of my other flats are very stiff (hard sole?) but these move with my feet in a way that feels non-constrictive. Will definitely be getting another pair. Note from the Elves: Thanks Lorelei!
  171. So Happy With Them

    Rating

They fit great! At first I thought they would be too tight but after 3-4 wears they shaped perfectly to my feet. They are also very breathable so my feet never sweat in them. Ive stopped wearing my other ballerina flats and only wear these now because they are so comfortable. I also really like the customizable colors and am very happy with my choice, but I wish there was a muted rose color option.
  172. ein Traum!

    Rating

[Translated from German] For several years I have only been wearing barefoot shoes, but these are the most beautiful and the most comfortable. Visually, the strap is unbeatable, I like the simple shape in black anyway. I bought the shoes one size larger than my regular shoe size and this decision was just right - I don't like to have it tight anywhere on my body. Thanks to the straps they hold well anyway and the foot is not narrowed anywhere. By choosing the other variant there is no risk that the leather will be damaged (a big problem with other, similarly flat shoes). It is totally annoying that these shoes are not available anywhere in Europe, so I got rid of an enormous amount of money on import sales tax, customs and additional postage (over 110 euros) I would like to wear only these shoes! Softstar: is there nowhere in Germany or Europe a dealer who carries your shoes or through whom your shoes can be ordered?

    Response from store

Thanks Andrea for the great review! The only place our shoes are available is direct from our workshop - but it sure would be fun to deliver them directly to you in Germany! Hope you keep enjoying your Ballerines for a long time to come!
  173. Totally worth the money - stunning

    Rating

I fretted about buying these as they were so pricey. I am SO glad I did. They are very flattering on my wide feet (10.8 cm wide, I ordered a regular width), extraordinarily comfortable, they scream "quality", and are beautifully made. I thought a lot about different colors in the customizer and came up with some great ones, but I'm pleased I went with plain black in the end because they are so striking and classy, and I can wear them with anything. The term "sports" closure makes it sound less dressy, but I think the strap makes them look more dressy. The softstar elves had trouble replying to my queries (they were emailing me but it wasn't getting through, and I kept asking) so they telephoned me from Oregon - and I live in New Zealand! Can't get better customer service than that.
  174. Comfortable and great

    Rating

I really love these shoes. They're definitely one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I've ever owned, and the leather makes them the most comfortable I've ever had to wear barefoot. They're snug and comfortable, and great to wear for many activities. I have similar feedback to others here. * The back of the shoe is shaped differently than most shoes I've worn. I like the high coverage of it, but because of the way that it curves in I can't get my heel all the way to the back of the footbed and so there's extra material that bunches up near the sole. * The elastic is great for keeping the shoe on, but is fairly loose for those of us with small volume or low arch feet. * They look great. I have two additional wishes: * more sizing options for Softstar Shoes. The 8U is perfect for me in bare feet but is too snug with medium weight socks. I worry that a 9U would be too big, but a half size bigger would be perfect. * more sole options for these shoes. The 4mm bottom is great for me to wear outdoors, but I'd love to have thinner sole option too especially if it would give a less athletic look for wearing to fancier events. I am so glad I bought these shoes and expect to buy them in more colours in the future.
  175. Pretty, didn't care for the fit

    Rating

I ordered these in a custom color for summer, but sent them back as I did not like the fit of the shoe. They looked lovely, but dug into my Achilles tendon and I couldn't see how I would be able to wear them for any period of time without being uncomfortable, much less go for a walk in them. I ordered a dash runamoc as a replacement, it seems a much more comfortable shoe, though not nearly as fashionable.

I am always looking for cute, comfortable ballet flats. Since I wear I size 11 in women's shoes, that is not always an easy task. The Ballerine flat is amazing! So comfortable and still super cute (even in my size)! This was my first pair of Soft Stars, but definitely not my last!
  177. A feminine casual/dress shoe that's actually comfortable!

    Rating

I have very wide feet, prefer "barefoot style" shoes, and my big toe is longer than my other toes. Finding feminine shoes, other than sandals, is a nightmare. High heels and flats alike are usually very painful for me. I normally wear a 7.5 wide, and I got the 6 wide ballerines. They fit great! No break-in time necessary for me. And they look good with dresses, skirts, ankle length pants, and jeans. I think this is as close to barefoot as I can get and still look nice at more formal and professional occasions. I've only had them a few weeks so I can't speak to the longevity, but I'd be willing to do some maintenance and re-gluing to keep these shoes going a long time. I don't plan to wear them for long walks and hikes, I have plenty of other shoes for that. These are totally worth the investment to finally have a comfortable pair of "dress up" shoes.
  178. These Are Fabulous!!

    Rating

I tried these in my standard SS shoe size, but they were much too small and I had to return them. I wanted so bad to like and have a pair of these because they would be a good non-winter shoe for dressy and casual wear. So I took measurements of my feet and consulted with the Elves. I tried again in a the next size up. Their recommendations were spot on. When I tell you these shoes are beyond comfortable with a feel of barely there, I'm not doing them justice. It's just something you gotta experience for yourself. These look and feel great, meeting all my requirements. They will be my Spring through Fall shoe. I plan to order more in custom designs.
  179. Comfortable but not durable

    Rating

I bought my pair in September 2016 as a birthday present to myself. There was about a week break-in period for my heel skin to thicken, which was fine because that’s pretty much how shoes are for me. Then, they were the most comfortable shoes I owned. I wore them 3-4 days a week to work, on hikes, running errands. Towards the beginning of summer 2017 the heels and toes began developing holes, but I kept wearing them because they’re so comfortable! By the end of 2017, the holes had gotten bigger and the vibram sole started separating from the shoe. Now I only wear them about once a week, and I can’t wear them if it’s raining or I’ll be hiking near water because water gets into the holes. How long are these shoes supposed to last? It’s a shame to retire them because the rest of the shoe is good- no wearing anywhere else, and the sole is hardly worn at all. Not even a donation charity will take them now, I’m afraid. I don’t think I’ll be reordering- but what a lovely show while they lasted!
  180. Amazing shoes, but the glue doesn't hold up well.

    Rating

I'm on my 7th pair of these shoes. I love them. I always assumed that the reason the glue starts falling off in the first few months of wear was because the leather cleaner I used wasn't compatible with the glue. I finally decided to buy the leather cleaner sold by soft star to get more wear out of my shoes before the glue separates. With the last pair, I was careful not to get them wet and only used the approved cleaner, but the glue still started falling off after only a couple of months. I was so disappointed that I haven't replaced them yet and not sure if I will. I really do love these shoes, but can't justify the price (especially with Canadian exchange rate) if they don't even last a year. Note from the Elves: Thanks Dusty for your review! Please note the thin band of glue around the perimeter of the sole does not have any function with regards to the durability of the bond. If a thin strip starts to come off with wear, you can pull it off and there will be NO impact the durability of the true bond between the Vibram sole and midsole.

  182. A good alternative

    Rating

These are definitely cute, and the raised heel cover design is functional for keeping the shoe on. This is the only ballerina that will fit me. That being said, it is a ballerina, it is not a toe spreading friendly shoe. So if you like or need something "traditionally feminine" this is perfect. It feels well made and will stay on my feet, but I can still easily slip them off at my desk and stretch my toes out. If they hold up for the next couple summers I will be happy about the price tag. As of now, its too soon to tell for durability.

  185. Ballerines Are Great for Guys, Too!

    Rating

I received my black Ballerines in Size 11/12 in just a few days, so the service was swift. Upon opening the package, I was impressed with the carefully wrapped shoes and the cloth tote bag. Nice touch! As for the shoes, it wasn't love at first sight. The shoes were in a folded configuration and when unfolded, the top of the front of each shoe was flat against the insole, so there was hardly any room to slip my feet in. I was disappointed at that, but withheld judgment until I wore them for a while. However, in just two days of breaking them in, I have warmed up to these shoes tremendously and they are super comfortable now. I have worn them a lot the past two days and have enjoyed the sensational comfort. The buttery soft leather is very high quality, the elfsmanship is first class, and I am now delighted with my purchase. Durability remains to be seen, but I have every confidence I will not be disappointed. Thank you, Softstar, for making Ballerines for men and women. It's really great to have a company recognize that guys also love and wear ballet flats! My wife likes them on me, too!
  186. Great shoes, will wear out too quickly to justify price

    Rating

Comfortable, wide toe box, and they stay on.. a really nice shoe. I wanted to love them. They are very cute, too. But they are not going to last. Nor should they - they are a minimal shoe. but if I only wear it on rare occasion, then why not wear a mainstream shoe? and if I wear it regularly, and let's say this shoe lasts 3 months, that's $1760 per year. That's not sustainable. We are willing to pay more, but not that much. My big toe pushes up on one spot, and I know there would be a hole there very soon. I wore these once so far, and I the whole time I was afraid of wearing a hole in them. Really not worth the price tag. :( I wanted so bad for there to be a minimal shoe company that is making it. Vivobarefoot makes bad shoes. Merrell is alright (though their options seem to be dwindling). This price tag is really a shame. Note from the Elves: Thanks T for your review. Please write back after you start wearing them and let us know how they hold up. We hope you will be pleasantly surprised.
  187. Great quality materials and craftsmanship BUT heel too high and wide

    Rating

This is my first pair of Ballerines, and I've been wearing them for just over a week, and overall I do love them. It is nice to have a healthy alternative that still looks good. My main concern is the heel, which is too wide and comes up too high. I'm not the first to notice this - several reviewers have mentioned the heel design. Here is an excerpt from another review: "I know from all the research I did before making this purchase that Soft Star raised the heel because of customer feedback. I wonder if it wouldn’t be worthwhile to have two custom options for this shoe: one design for those who would want the higher heel design, and another design for those who prefer the heel piece of leather to be lower, meeting the sole of the shoe without the extra leather from the body of the shoe boosting the height of the heel." That is exactly right!. Without the amount of leather boosting the height of the heel, the fit would be bang on. I can probably add in some heel wedges, and I still may, but it seems silly to pay for premium zero-drop shoes, and then add in a drop. In my case, the higher elastic in the back is cutting (slightly, but still) into my achilles, and the back of the shoe is already starting to get squished down, which is unattractive and will eventually lead to excess wear and tear. I had such high hopes for these shoes, and I still gave them 4 stars because of the overall quality of materials and workmanship. As a woman with large feet, I deeply appreciate the range of sizes available at Soft Star. I think this is a great company, and I want to make them my go-to shoe provider. In my mind, I had thought that I would be ordering more pairs right away, once I had confirmed the fit of my first pair. Instead, I'm now going to wait and see how the shoes wear over the next while. In the meantime, I'm back to searching the internet for alternatives, which is really not what I want to do. On a final note, I find the $150US price tag expensive, but reasonable, if the shoes fit and wear well! Canadians do need to be aware that the converted price is closer to $200CAD, and I was charged a hefty border fee on delivery. The shoes arrived with a NAFTA sticker, which I would have thought would exempt me from paying duty, but it did not. So at around $250CAD, these are very expensive if you live north of the border. Note from the Elves: Thank you Nicolette for your review~! We will take your feedback into account if we do any design updates. We have tried lower heels in our prototypes and unfortunately they did not stay on very securely... but we are always open to trying again. Please note the NAFTA sticker to Canada should have exempted you from paying duty - most of our Canadian customers have reported no duties and by law it should be exempt - but you may need to call it to the attention of the customs official as it may be something they have not encountered previously.

    Problem solved

I have super wide feet - 5E in other brands! So, it's been a struggle to find some simple flats that were wide enough but still flexible. When I do find shoes in other brands that are wide enough, they are often stability shoes which then cause knee pain because they mess with my gait. Ballerines are amazing! I can see a lot more of these in my future. My toes have room to spread out, but the shoes don't fall off. I got my regular size and they've stretched out perfectly. I recently added some sheepskin insoles so I can keep wearing them as the temperature drops this winter. Pure love.
  189. Most comfortable flats ever. A little wide through the heel

    Rating

These shoes are easily the most comfortable flats I’ve ever had. And the color is gorgeous. I followed the size guidelines and i was on the edge of wide for the toe box, but narrower than regular at the heel, so i ordered regular. When they arrived, I didn’t like them cause I thought my heels sloshed around too much and the material comes higher up my heel in the back than I was used to. But the color was so lovely I decided to keep them. And they are so comfortable. The width in the heel doesn’t bother, and they are really durable.

    Comfortable, perfect

    Rating

I bought this pair for my college daughter who needs black flats for her choir concerts, plus to dress up frequently. She loves them! They are super-comfortable, cushion enough from the hard floors on which she stands for concerts, and are snug and yet comfortable, like a well-fitting glove for the feet. They look great on her feet, and she loves wearing them even while walking longer distances.

I love these shoes! I ordered a size up as recommended. At first they were quite painful on the back of my ankle but after some indoor wearing they molded to my feet and now I walk several miles a day in them with my toddler on my back. I do think the back of the shoe doesn't need to come up so high since the strap makes them plenty secure, and then they would fit more comfortably out of the box and have cleaner lines (the leather in back slouches where it meets the heel of the sole). But on the whole I'm tremendously happy with them.
  192. I love these!

I never write reviews for anything but these are so special it is an experience I'm happy to share. I did my best to measure and I've always worn a size 7 and an occasional 7 1/2. I ordered the 7 and, guess what, it was too big. The people at Softstar were so nice! I returned the 7 and in very short order I got the size 6. They are perfect in size and in shape. They flatter my feet because the shape is so good. And, they were comfortable right away. I'm sure I'll order a pair in another color.
  193. Good once I figured out the fit... but not sure I'd order again with price hike!

    Rating

I bought a pair of these to wear with my Correct Toes. I used the guide to determine my size (9), then ordered a 9 wide. They fit in the toe box, but were much too big on the sides - they were dragging a bit on the ground. I tried a size 9 regular but the toe box was too small. I finally tried a size 10 regular and they fit great! They really do feel like slippers and I'm so happy with them. That said, I liked these so much that I went back to order a neutral pair in Latte, which I had seen a few months ago and was shocked at the price! The basic black flat is now $30 more, and since the Latte ballet flat is no longer available, I'd have to do a custom shoe to get it, which would make it $50 more than it was just a few months ago! I understand that prices sometimes need adjustments upward, but those are so pretty hefty price increases and given them, I'm not sure I'll be adding another pair anytime soon. Please, Soft Star, revisit your pricing!
  194. So, so happy to have found these.

I can't wear even the slightest heel or I get back problems. I've been wearing other minimalist shoes, but until now hadn't been able to find any in leather. These are so good, and they're proper presentable shoes that I can wear to work and look presentable. I'm now thinking about what colour to have my next pair!
  195. Didn't work for me

    Rating

Have a love-hate relationship with these. Love love love how light and flexible they are, but I cannot wear them without developing a sore spot on the back of my left heel. Have tried hammering away at them to soften them in that spot, but it didn't work. I think these are just cut way too high in the back for me to be comfortable with them. Really wish I'd returned them when I was hesitating over whether to keep them early on. If you've ever had similar problems with shoes (your achilles tendon is sensitive to pressure/constriction like mine), make sure that these don't feel too tight. If they do, just return them and try another style or a bigger size.
  196. Most comfortable flat I have ever owned!

    Rating

I knew when I put these on that they were definitely worth the investment. They fit incredibly well and still have enough room in the toe box which is sometimes an issue for me with flats. I cannot wait to get another pair in a different colour to add to my collection. I ordered based on the sizing chart and had to return my first pair. I am typically an 8 but I came out a nine after measuring. The size 9's were too big and the 8's fit just right.
  197. A Fan!

    Rating

Finally there is a pretty and comfortable shoe that can be worn to work! These felt like slippers right out of the box. My first pair was black and then I immediately ordered a neutral ballet flat as well. I rounded the size up to account for my slightly wide feet and it fit perfectly. These are the first barefoot shoes I've found that look like normal shoes. I particularly like the footbed.
  198. Almost Perfect

    Rating

I bought these 9 months ago and have worn them almost daily for those 9 months. For the first few wears of them, I had the issue others have had with the rubbing on my heal, but I suffered through it for a week or two until my heels developed some thicker skin. After the short "wear-in" period, I can say that these have been my absolute favorite shoe, and I have worn them almost exclusively. Unfortunately, after 9 months, the side of one of the heals just developed a hole where the leather rubbed on the ground due to how my feet fit the shoes (see other reviews). I was really hoping these shoes would last me a full year, but 9 months of almost exclusive wear is still acceptable, in my opinion. I just came to purchase another pair, and I see they have gone up $30 since I last purchased 9 months ago. The original price point was already on the high side for my budget, but it was well worth it because I loved them so much. The $30 increase is really making me pause on purchasing a second pair especially if I don't get a full year of wear, though.

Very comfortable. I ordered the wide for the room in toe box and there is a little too much room in the heel. However the shoe grips in the back so does not fall off. Will order in other colors.
  200. First time buyer and I love them!

    Rating

I decided to order my normal size and not size one up cause I knew they would stretch to my foot for a perfect fit and I wanted the more snug fit. First time wearing they felt like the most comfy shoes I have EVER put on :) I have a pair of soft sole minnetonka booties and i have a pair of xero sandals which both I love as well but my soft star shoes was by far the most comfortable. After a couple hrs of first wear I did have a sore toe and one of the heels was digging in making it sore as well but I was expecting it. After 4 or 5 wears there was zero discomfort and I LOVE wearing them! The ballerines are the perfect shoe for any occasion ! I will definitely continue to be a returning customer, all my kids wear soft stars as well :) thank you!

I work as a flight attendant, and love wearing these shoes throughout my days in the air and on the ground! They are comfortable, travel well, and the elastic bands help me move quickly between connections. I love the supple leather with many possible shades. I have had foot surgery, and since that time, Softstar shoes are the only kind I wear for comfort and posture! Many thanks to the elves!
  202. Great, sturdy shoe

Very well made and the most comfortable pair of minimalist flats I've ever tried on. I read a lot of reviews that said to size up, but I found these fit better when a little snug. Love them.
  203. Nice, but wrong shape for 20-30% of us

    Rating

These are great quality and very comfortable. My only complaint is the profile of these shoes doesn't work for the 20-30% of people who, like me, have a second toe longer than the big toe (Morton's Toe). I had to size up in order for the angle of the shoe's toe to accommodate my foot shape. Because of the larger size and the toe shape, when wearing the ballerines, my feet push to the outer edges of the shoes, making me look pigeon-toed. I would love it of SoftStar offered a less angled profile.
  204. Not holding up, fur not quite right

    Rating

I followed the instructions in the sizing video but am not happy with the fit. At first I thought it was good because the shoes are so soft and almost feel as if I'm not wearing shoes. But as I wore them I started to notice that the toe box isn't wide enough and my little toe rubs against the edge of the footbed since it doesn't fit on top of it, which isn't very comfortable. I have several other styles of soft star shoes and I have not needed a wide before but I feel it would have been a better fit in this case. Also there is a thin string between the sole and leather that looks like rubber and it is falling off of one of the shoes. Note from Softstar: Thanks Sarah for the review~! Please not the thin string between the sole and leather is just excess bonding glue from welding the sole to the midsole. Once you start wearing the shoes that thin bead of rubber may come free and you can pull it off - it will not hurt the shoe in any way and is just excess bonding material from attaching the sole.
  205. Needs design modifications

    Rating

Like some other reviewers, I have been disappointed by the way the heel has “collapsed” and is now bunching down at the sole. This part of the leather is wearing away at a faster rate than the rest of the shoe because it’s scraping against the floor/ground whenever I walk. For me, it didn’t take a full season of wearing the shoe for this to happen, but only a few months’ wear. I took very good care of these shoes, babying them so they weren’t caught in the rain, etc. I know from all the research I did before making this purchase that Soft Star raised the heel because of customer feedback. I wonder if it wouldn’t be worthwhile to have two custom options for this shoe: one design for those who would want the higher heel design, and another design for those who prefer the heel piece of leather to be lower, meeting the sole of the shoe without the extra leather from the body of the shoe boosting the height of the heel. They are comfortable shoes. But given the amount of wear (in such a short time), they no longer have the versatility of a dress up/dress down shoe. I wanted to love these, but unless the lower-heel option returns, I won’t be buying these again. I'm willing to spend money on the right shoe. This is too much for a shoe that doesn't hold up. Sorry!
  206. In LOVE

    Rating

I absolutely love these shoes so comfy I forget I am wearing them. The suede insole is so soft. At first the straps dig into my foot but they seem to have loosened up after a few wears. I highly recommend these shoes! Note from the Elves: Thanks NS for your review! Have you tried sliding the strap slider all the way to the side? It makes the straps looser if all the way to the side, more snug/tighter if moved away from the side to give adjust-ability to how snug you want the straps.

These handmade black flats are worth every dime. Incredibly comfortable and great for work, play and travel. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and I'll definitely be buying them again.
  210. Good construction bad design

    Rating

These seem to be built well: thick leather, no elastic (I think) to fail over time. The trouble is that the sole isn't shaped like a healthy foot. The toe box curves in too far back from the toes such that my wife's outer toes tended to push against the side and extend of the sole. This shape might be appropriate for actual ballerinas if they have deformed there feet from too much time on point, but I don't know if that is even a known phenomenon. Perhaps the shape is meant to use the sole as the elastic to keep the shoe on since there doesn't seem to be any in the upper, but the design choice makes the shoe rather uncomfortable and unhealthy. This problem seems to be unique to the Ballerine Flat as the rest of the shoes offered here have what I would consider a more natural sole shape. Note from the Elves: Thanks T. for your thoughtful review! Ballet flat styles have very little upper material to secure the shoe to the foot, so they do tend to be a bit more snug than our other minimal footwear. If you are looking for maximum toe spread, please consider trying the wide Ballerine or a larger size with sport straps.
  211. The best ballet flat I have ever worn!

    Rating

I went back and forth between buying Soft Stars and buying an equally priced competitor's ballet flat. I ended up buying both, and from the very first moment I put on the Ballerines I was in love. I sent the competitor's pair back the same day I put the ballerine on. It is like wearing slippers to work. So comfortable and soft on my feet. I love how classic the styling is, and the quality is amazing. They are soft and fun to wear. I have already ordered a red pair. One thing... they tell you that unless you usually need a wide width the regular will probably be best, and it is true. The wide were very wide. My feet are a usually too wide for ballet flats, but the regular fit me perfectly. I also ordered the wide and returned them as the regular width was best.
  212. Amazing shoes for problematic feet

    Rating

It is almost impossible for me to find feminine shoes that fit. I have wide balls-of-feet and narrow heels, and accessory naviculars sticking out of my feet. I got these in wide width and my feet stay in the shoes comfortably while allowing my toes to stretch out. They look normal and not orthopedic, which is refreshing. Size down -- I am a 8 and a half - 9 in normal shoes, and the 8U's wides were too big on me. I had to exchange them for the 7U's wides, which fit well. These are fantastic shoes for my weird feet. I have never been able to comfortably wear ballet flats before -- this is the first pair that neither squishes my toes nor slips off my heels.

I had searched for a great flat for years and wasn't happy with the fit and comfort of any I'd found. These are by far my favorite shoes ever! I have a few other Soft Star shoes, and I adore them all. The ballerina flats are my #1. I purchased them originally for work, but I'll be buying a second pair for work shoes and keeping this first pair for everyday wear. Unless there's snow or rain, these are my go-to shoes.
  214. Good, but not my favorite

    Rating

I am a size 10.5 and wear size 10U in most other SS styles I own, such as Merry Janes, Metros, and Elk Roo Mocs. (My Metros are my absolute favorites!) Because of the half-size, I decided to ignore the sage advice to size up and ordered my normal SS size in these. I was so worried they would stretch out like my other pairs have and that they would be unusable without some kind of strap. Since I am always going to be wearing them without socks, I wanted them to be a more snug fit. Well, snug is what I got. In hindsight, I should've ordered both 10U and 11U and returned the one that didn't fit. The 10U were so snug as to be uncomfortable at first, and even after wearing them with socks around the house to stretch them, it has taken a full 3 weeks of off-and-on wear for them to be comfy. The toenail on my right big toe still presses on the top of the right shoe, since that foot is a tad bit larger. Overall, I'm still not sorry I purchased these. They have never caused blisters, and beyond the first wear, any discomfort in the heel area at all. They don't slip at all. They are cute and I have had several compliments on them. They are a tad dressier than my other pairs of SS shoes, and don't look quite so unusual, so I prefer them if I am needing to fit in somewhere for work. I will try the 11U next time, possibly with the sport closure, so they will hopefully be comfortable from the start.

    These shoes are a dream

    Rating

I am so in love with these shoes. They are chic and unbelievably comfortable. The fit snugly, like a ballet slipper, but they have plenty of room for my whole foot, including toe spread. Every time I put them on, I'm so happy. I'm going to order more pairs as my bank account allows. I ordered one size down from my usual Soft Star size. When I first put them on, I was worried. The toe box was tight on my larger foot. But I had faith and wore them for short periods, and after about a week, they fit perfectly. I didn't get the strap, but they do not slip off. They're great for dancing. I'm never wearing high heels for a dressy occasion again.

I've been transitioning to barefoot and the ballerina flats are my first true barefoot shoe. I was nervous to order based on all the different reviews. My printer didn't print the sizing guide correctly so I measured my feet. I usually wear a 9 or 9 1/2 and based on the reviews and my foot measurement, I decided to go with a 9U. In the end, they fit just a wee bit snug on my toe but I didn't need to wear thick socks to stretch them. After a day of wearing them they fit perfectly. I've been wearing zero drop Altras, so I was used to zero drop with a cushion. So it took me a couple weeks to ease into wearing these. But now that i'm accustomed to barefoot, they are really comfortable and I prefer to wear these shoes. I will definitely be buying more!

As someone who suffers from metatarsalgia, bunions and flat feet, I was somewhat skeptical that a minimalist shoe would work for me but I love this ballet flat. I had to go up a size, but I am very happy with my new shoes. They are quite comfortable. I have narrow feet, so I opted for the strap but I think I'll skip that on my next pair as it doesn't seem necessary. Yes, there will be another pair ordered soon!

I am currently on my 3rd pair of Ballerines and I absolutely love them. They are cute and dressy and comfortable. My very first pair is now 3 years old - they are still oh so comfy, but the perforated leather is finally starting to tear in some spots after 3 years of 3 season use - they have now been downgraded to rainy day camping shoes. I bought my second pair in the same size and keep them just for special dress up occasions - I do find them quite a bit tighter and not quite as comfortable as my originals - I am assuming that is due to less frequent wearing. I've had my latest pair for just over a month. This time I opted for 1 size larger with the sports strap. The fit is comfy, although I do find them quite a bit hotter with the sports strap than without. I'll see how much they stretch out with wear, but probably will skip the sports strap next time. Definitely my go to shoe though!

I bought a pair of Ballerines with sports closure during the recent sale. Incredible! So soft. They felt like "mine" from the first moment I slipped them on. I love them. I wear a size 6U Wide in Merry Janes and I was conflicted on what size to order in Ballerine, since the Elf advice says to order 1 size larger. That seemed way too large to me. I'm so glad I went with my usual size and didn't order up a size. I have a high volume foot, with wide toe splay...and wear an American size 7.5 or European size 38 in the commercial shoe world...and the 6U Wide is absolutely perfect on me. The sports closure gives extra security, but I think I'd be OK without it too. I think I love my Ballerines even more than my Merry Janes.

  225. Just what I was looking for

    Rating

I've been living in minimalist shoes and sandals for almost a year, and loving the ground-feel and flexibility. But my existing shoes weren't very feminine-looking - I'd sacrificed style for comfort. My new Ballerines are by far my prettiest pair of minimalist footwear. The flexibility and ground-feel are great, but they do sacrifice toe-splay room compared to my other shoes and sandals. But the leather of my Ballerines is nice and soft, and to have a pair of more feminine shoes is worth the more form-fitting fit. (I chose to stay with my regular size, knowing they might be tight at first. They stretched quickly as promised when I wore them around the house with thick socks.) I do worry about how soon they'll wear out, since the leather is so thin. Some reinforcing on the toe might have been good. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

I love my new softstars. I am selling all of my high heeled shoes and shoes without room in the toe box for toes to splay. I am a yoga practitioner and am very aware of the health of my feet. I am 51 and noticed the start of a bunion on my left foot a few years ago. So that is one reason I will only wear "correct toes" shoes. These feel like slippers but I think they look very elegant. They aren't warm enough if it's below 50 degrees outside though. That is the only downside. I highly recommend softstars for the health of your feet!

It took a few tries to get the right size, but it was definitely worth the effort. In Softstar sizing, I wear a 7, preferably wide. In the balerina flats, a 9 regular fits the best. And now that I've found my perfect fit, I only want to remove them to walk barefoot. They look great with everything and I can go all day long with no foot pain. Actually I think the minimalist profile is helping my knee pain and my overall energy - no more tipping around in high heels for me. Thank you Softstar for making such a comfortable and cute shoe!

The sole is oh so soft as is the leather. My toes and feet are so happy. They look cute and tidy for the office. I really like the sport closure, I like the look of it and also the security it provides. Since they get the big yes from me I'll likely treat myself to a custom coloured pair next. Thankyou!
  231. Size = short. :-(

    Rating

After ordering the adult mary jane in size 12, I decided to give these a shot. Whilst the flat in like size 12 is VERY comfy, they are just too short, way smaller in length than the MJ, which is very disappointing as that's the largest size available. I'd give 5 stars if sizing was an actual 12U (12 men/13 women) like the MJ was. Darn, I was excited to find a flat that fit, only to be let down. Is this the norm for the same size flat t0 be way smaller than the mary jane? Note from the Elves: Dear d. Sorry to hear you are disappointed! The Ballerine does fit more snugly than the Mary Jane so it may feel smaller - but the lengths of all Soft Star shoes are graded the same. Wondering if it is possible we perhaps sent a pair with the wrong size tag? This does not happen often, but it is a possibility. Let me say ... I have unique feet (small, slightly wide, low-volume) and have a really hard time finding comfortable shoes, dressy or casual. These can be both. I did try several other SS models here (solstice and dash), which were cute but not perfect, so I ended up returning them. No other ballet flat I've tried works. I do put a little heel grip in, which helped alleviate the initial rubbing, and now they're ridiculously comfortable. Bonus: I can pack two of them in a suitcase and have color choices without taking up much room. I have another custom pair (sans straps), and am thinking about two more.

I got these in a medium Blue with silver-grey edge trim and heel strip. They are soft and super comfy from the start. This is my second pair. Also have some avocado green with darker moss trim, heel strip & suede accent on the heels (Custom). They are a bit snug in the beginning and stretch to conform to my feet, but I don't have the sport strap, or feel I need it. It would be less flattering on me. These minimal ballerines are my favorite shoes! Eventually I want some a dark burnt orange rust color ones with brown trim too. I like their sales!

I wear size 10 1/2 US women's shoes. Softstar only has the size just above and the size just below. I have bought 2 pair of these- a soft star size 10 (too big) and a pair of size 9 (too small). I love how they look and the soft leather. If they came in my size they would be perfect. It's not pleasant to have to choose between huge shoes and ones that hurt my toes. I wear them every day and just keep hoping the leather will stretch out a little more. After about a month they still hurt a bit.
  236. like the shoes but there are some things I wish were different

    Rating

I really like how the shoes are made and that they are handmade and leather. They are very comfortable, but I wish the toe box was a little wider and not as snug a fit to my toes. These are supposedly a wide width, but I don't know where the wide part comes in as it's not in the toe box or the heel. I also wish there were 1/2 size options as I think going up slightly in the shoe would solve this problem. They are not uncomfortable in any way or feel too tight. I would prefer they were a little longer and looser, i.e. wider toe box. I also wish that the sole came up a little higher so it would be around the leather on the bottom (comparing the design to vivobarefoot). My last wish is that these came in more color options, i.e. cranberry red, navy or brown, some decoration on the shoe to make it dressier such as a buckle or maryjane (don't like the elastic option seen on the website).

Alas, I am adding my voice to the ballerine naysayers. I read reviews from some people saying that the shoes rubbed their heels, but I wanted to believe it wouldn't happen to me. I'm so sad to say that I can't wear mine at all. When they first arrived I thought they looked fabulous and the fit seemed ok. I wore them out for a couple of hours and felt them pressing on my heel but it didn't seem too bad. Then I wore them for an entire day. By the end of the day I couldn't walk at all. This isn't a normal rubbing, which can be fixed by bandaids and calluses. Instead it's an intense pressure on the achilles tendon. My ankles ached terribly, long after I took the shoes off. I haven't worn the shoes since. It is especially upsetting for me since the shoes look beautiful! I will stick to my chukkas and run amoks (both of which I adore).

    So BEAUTIFUL!!

    Rating

These truly are the best ballet flats I have ever worn. They look so pretty and delicate on your feet. I recently started wearing minimal shoes and needed something dressier to wear to work.. They were so comfortable from the first time I put them on. I wear a size 8 medium but I ordered the 8U in wide because I wear my toe separators with them. They are nice and roomy but they still stay on my feet easily, even without the toe separators. I love the high back and the leather is such high quality; nice and thick, but soft. I am saving my money so I can buy the terracotta next! I wish I could get a pair in every color! (I started to get plantars fasciaitis in the beginning from wearing these on hard surfaces because my feet weren't strong enough. However, it went away within a week or so).
  240. Elastic Pain

    Rating

I really like the look and comfort of these shoes except for one thing: The elastic band at the rear of heel is very painful. Maybe it sits right on a reflexology point or a nerve or some such thing. I cannot wear them for long without that pain getting intense. I showed them to my cobbler and we tried attaching a sheepskin panel to the area to soften it but it was not effective. I may ask him to try cutting the elastic all together ( they could stay on w/ the strap only) If that doesn't work, then I'll have to consider them a total loss. I am sad; I wish they could work. I also don't like the chemical smell that the rubber has. It must be a toxic matter and I don't want any toxicity in my footwear! Can you not use totally natural tree rubber instead of Vibram?? Even if it cost more, it would be worth it. My priority is to find shoes that are TOTALLY natural w/ no synthetic foam or petroleum or chemical nastiness! Note from the Elves: Thanks Kay for your feedback. You might want to consider exchanging for one size larger in the Ballerine flat if they are in brand-new condition. If this is not the case, consider stretching the shoe mechanically to address the tightness. Vibram does not generally use tree rubber as it hardens (and breaks down) in cold weather and gets sticky in hot weather, although they may use a mixture of it depending on the product. Also, all tree rubber is processed using vulcanization meaning even natural rubber is not chemical free. Please consider our options for all leather soles if you would like to avoid rubber soles - leather soles are available on our Dash styles. Thank you!
  241. Comfy, but break them in!

    Rating

I ordered these shoes true to size. They were extremely tight when I first put them on, but leather stretches. Those first few days, I wore them in short burst with socks. Now I wear them barefoot, and they are quite comfortable. The high heel in the back takes a little getting used to, but I understand the design -- the heel doesn't slip, and my toes don't try to subconsciously "hold" the shoe onto my foot. I still prefer my RunAmocs for a truly "forget I'm wearing shoes" experience. But these are cute and a bit more versatile. All in all, a good purchase.
  242. Great leather, weird shape

    Rating

I have to say, I was surprised by the weight of the shoe when I first pulled them out of the box! They're not heavy like work boots, but if you're used to trying on "normal" ballet flats of thin leather or synthetic materials, you will note how much more substantial these are. It's a good thing! The reinforcement at the toe and heel are great! Now for the cons. The shape of the shoe from outside little toe to outside heel curves ever so slightly inward, like the foot tracing used for the sole was slightly pigeon-toed. This means I am walking on the outside of the heel *ALMOST* off the sole and the inside of the heel bunches and has extra sole/material that looks sloppy. The heels are wearing through because they drag and I'm not walking squarely on the sole. They are definitely a casual shoe, more like a slipper than the sophisticated ballet flat that I was hoping for. Sadly, I'll be purchasing my next pair of ballet flats from a different company.
  243. Comfy!

    Rating

I've been wearing these all the time. I was replacing a bunch of really uncomfortable dress shoes, but now I wear these whenever I can. I ordered a size up because I like my shoes roomy. I wear them barefoot or with light socks. They do mold to your foot - at first I was worried about one spot my toe was hitting, but that went away after a day. Thank you!
  244. Lovely, but wore out fast.

    Rating

Let me start by saying these shoes are SO comfortable. Unfortunately, after wearing them for only a season, they've worn out at the heel. I can't afford to spend $120 on flats that last for only a season, so I'm looking elsewhere to buy my next flats.
  245. The only ballerina shoes I love

    Rating

I love the look of ballerina shoes and have tried so many different kinds. Until I found these shoes, I've always had some problem (rubbing on heels, pinching toes, falling off). These shoes are a dream. I can wear them all day. These shoes don't fall off and they don't rub anywhere. I don't even feel like I'm wearing shoes. I love them. I love them. They are more expensive than I'm used to paying but they are soooooo worth it. I gave away all my other, poor fitting, blister causing ballerina shoes. I think I will buy another pair of these so I can have more color options. Love. Love. Love these shoes.

I couldn't be happier with these ballerines As a male with many pairs of ballet flats I think these are my favorites! The elves were very helpful and always a pleasure to talk to. I also own a pair of run-amocs.
  247. Comfortable and fashionable

    Rating

I ordered these after discovering that the minimal shoes I had been wearing (not Soft Star Shoes) were discontinued. These flats are even more comfortable than my old pair. I particularly like the sport closure: I have not noticed any looseness in the shoe (I don't think they would fall off my feet without the closure) but it makes them feel more secure.
  248. nice, but...

    Rating

Ok, so I want to love these, but I"m having the same problem many others have stated. First time wearing them out I had huge blisters on my heels and had to ask a store clerk for band aids. :( So painful. Hoping they will loosen up after wearing them with socks. 3 stars because I love that they're soft and well made, in Oregon!, but hope I'll be able to wear them, especially since they are so expensive.
  249. My Favorite Shoe :)

    Rating

I love, love, love these shoes! I have a very hard time finding shoes that don't hurt my bunions. I thought I was going to have to consider surgery because I was having so much foot pain wearing wide width and "comfort" brands like Birkenstock, Dansko, Keens, etc. After watching the sizing video I decided to size up and order a wide width. My Ballerines were a perfect fit right out of the box, with no break in period. I'm on my feet all day as a mom to three kids and an elementary art teacher. When I wear these adorable flats I don't have foot pain! <3 I'm so happy I ordered these shoes. The leather is soft and the shoes are really cute. I like that they can be dressed up or down and that they're made in the USA. I'll definitely be ordering more. Thank you Soft Star! :)
  250. Love love love

I absolutely love these shoes. They fit perfectly right out of the box. They are well made and made in The USA which is amazing. I seriously have worn my ballerine's everyday since I got them. Can not wait to pick out another pair! Love them and I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a comfortable ballet flat that can go from professional to dressy to casual!
  251. Perfect for "barefoot business" wear

    Rating

I spent a long time trying out different shoes that would feel comfortable and "barefoot" without looking odd or downright ugly! These fit my requirements perfectly. They look nice, have enough toe space for a long-time barefooter, and best of all, feel great. I was also very impressed with SoftStar's customer service as well. When I noticed an issue with the first pair and sent them an email including pictures, they were very prompt in sending out a replacement that has had no problems at all.
  252. Super cute & AWESOME for my feet!

    Rating

Sometime over the last few years, despite always wearing flats (albeit not great-fitting ones), I've developed a bunion on one of my feet. So, I've been on the search for better-fitting (non-painful!) cute flats to wear for (business casual) work and found these! They look like completely normal, nice solid leather flats, and fit like a dream (even on my poor bunion!). I did go through a few iterations before I realized that the wide version of these shoes are really wide (they mean it when they say don't order the wide unless you always require wide shoes!), so even my bunion foot fits best in the normal width shoe. The best part is that my feet feel wonderful after wearing these exclusively for a while. I want to order a million more pairs of these, but know I won't have to because they're so well made and will last a long time! (Bittersweet.) Highly, highly recommend!
  253. So Very Comfy!

    Rating

I have been wearing my Soft Star Ballerines for a week now and have to say they are the most comfy flat I've ever worn. I work as a teacher's assistant in a PK classroom, I'm on my feet literally running around all day. I have worn many different brands of flats, which usually fall apart/develop holes in 6-9 months. It's also hard to find flats that are "bendable" and have thin flexible soles, or that don't rub my heel or squish my toes together. I wear an 8 1/2 so ordered an 8(9womens). The first day I wore them to work and while they didn't rub anything raw or cause blisters, they weren't the most comfortable shoes in the world. My big toe nails hurt. I'm used to wearing minimal shoes/going barefoot, so my feet and leg muscles were totally fine. But the second day was so much better and by the third day I vowed to never wear any other brand of flats again! So great, comfy, cute, and wonderful quality! The high backs keep the shoe on my foot so securely, they fit like a dream. I was so impressed I have ordered a second pair, the custom flats in silver. Thank you Soft Star Elves!
  254. Awesome.

    Rating

Awesome fit. Awesome style. Awesome materials. Awesome company. I followed the online size guide and Ballerine video fitting instructions. Per instructions, I sized up for the roomier fit and got the perfect-for-me size without ordering multiple pairs or going through a return and reordering process. The shoes are cuter in person than online, and the leather is super rich and soft. Shoe construction is excellent. I'm also impressed with the company regarding leather sourcing and core values. Good job Soft Star! Thanks for the shoes :)
  255. Perfect for my neuroma

    Rating

These are the only ballet flats I can wear more than twice a week without irritating my neuroma. The toe box is wide enough to allow the foot to expand and get the "barefoot" effect. The leather is so soft it and does not bother my bunion either. These work better for me than the Vivobarefoot flats which tend to have a narrower toe box.
  256. Comfortable and lovely

    Rating

I use these as a nice shoe for work and play. So far, they feel great (very little time in getting used to them) and they look super cute.
  257. Good, but issues with heel

    Rating

I've had my pair of ballerines for two years now. I also have the issue of the heel being too tall, so the material bunches down at the sole of the shoe. So within a year of having these, they developed holes in the material that bunches at the sole, from being worn down by floors/pavement. Now they look junky. The extra material at the heel also pushes my foot to the front of the shoe, causing my toes to not have enough space, but there is still a huge gap at the heel. I need a new pair of flats now so I'm going with a different brand this time. Note from the Elves: Thanks Tre for the feedback. We are sorry they did not meet your needs. You are absolutely correct that our soft leather designs will not wear like synthetic materials, and after a season of regular use, the leather starts to wear or slouch. We designed the heels higher for comfort and functionality - when we tried lower cuts on the heel, the shoe did not stay on as securely. We appreciate feedback like yours to keep challenging us on how we can continue to improve as we move forward.
  258. Good quality shoe; odd sizing

    Rating

I have annoying and painful bunions, which makes it a struggle buying shoes. I read a bunch of reviews on these and figured I'd give them a try. They are pretty expensive to me, but they seemed high quality and worth it due to my finnicky, painful feet. I wanted so much to love them. I usually wear an 8 1/2 wide, but since there are no half sizes, I went with a 9 wide. They were enormous! Too long, and way too wide. It was a little hilarious when I tried them on; I looked like a clown. Not wanting to go through the hassle of returning them for a full size down in both length and width, I took them to a cobbler, who sadly told me he couldn't make them any smaller because of the elastic and that I should send them back for a whole size smaller. So I did. I ordered an 8 regular, and they fit ... bizarrely. They were just too small lengthwise that my toes felt a little crunched--not good for bunions. But in the heel, they are still oddly too wide, and there's this extra room in the heel that causes the leather to fold in, and looks really weird. I tried stretching them in the tow box, but that didn't work as much as I'd hoped. I feel like the needless extra room in the heel would be better allocated to making the toe box larger lengthwise (it's plenty wide enough. I feel a bit geriatric when standing next to my coworker in her little feminine Target flats). These shoes would be perfect if you just make them longer and more narrow in the heel and call them an 8 1/2. If you would do this, I would order more in other colors. They are very durable and high quality, but they crush my toes and have a freakishly wide heel.
  259. Even better now!

    Rating

I wanted to update my review as I visited Soft Star in person a few days ago and they adjusted the straps on my ballerines to be tight to my foot and now they are perfect! This seems to help the slipping to the outside of the heel too. Lovely, cute slippers as shoes!
  260. Most comfortable shoes for all day and everyday

    Rating

The brand names describes it best. The shoes are soft. The shoes became the stars in my wardrobe. They are simple enough to wear with anything. And, most importantly they are very comfortable!
  261. Excellent shoes

    Rating

I have a very difficult time finding extra-wide shoes that fit as my bunion has gotten worse over the years. I got these shoes in wide and they are soo comfortable. The shoe irritated the top of my bunion on the first day, but putting lotion on my foot fixed that problem for a couple of days. Now the leather has stretched out, and I wear these every single day. I've gotten rid of my old shoes - clogs, birks, sandals... I feel much more active than when I wore stiff clunky arch supports. My bunion does not hurt any more and my knee doesn't hurt either (I had knee pain). The leather and the quality of work are very excellent. I love these shoes.
  262. Like slippers

    Rating

Seems like my reviews for SSS all seem to proclaim them to be like slippers. Indeed, I want all my shoes to feel like slippers! I almost returned these as the 7U that I got in the dashes was shorter than the dashes, but I didn't dare order the 8U as my foot is really narrow so I thought they would be way too big since these don't come in narrow. Af first, my toes were squished at the top, but one night of tucking some rolled up socks in the toes seemed to relieve that and I tried them on about 5 min at a time over the next few days and just doing that seemed to stretch them enough that they were comfortable. Now it seems like there is plenty of room in them. No problem at all and I could never have worn the bigger size. One thing though, with low volume feet, I notice that the front strap is not tight at all. It's loose actually. I'm thinking of sewing a tuck in it to make it tighter. I know I can tighten it a tiny bit by moving the buckle to the middle, but I don't like the look of that as much. That said, the shoes stay on my feet and don't slip off. There is a little extra room in the width of the heel though and sometimes it feels like my heel is sliding off the sole to the outside (and I noticed wear on the leather there where my foot is resting off the sole). But because these feel like slippers, I am willing to forgive that. Just hope I don't wear a hole in the leather in that spot. I am also curious as to why the sole is curved. Is that to help keep the shoe on? The dash sole does not do that, but is straight. My foot is also straight and not curved. I think that is the reason (besides the extra width) that my heel slides to the outside as my heel doesn't curve in like that. Does anyone else have curvy feet or are most people's feet straight like mine (I mean the outer edge)? I'm never sure as it seems everyone's feet are soo very different.

I'm on my second pair, and I just ordered my third pair as a DYO. These are the best ballet flats, hands down. And I've tried many, from department store brands, to name brands, to high end designer. The leather of these flats is amazing. The cut is elegant and stays on your foot perfectly. I wore my first pair almost daily for a year and a half--that is how comfortable and versatile they are. They eventually reached the point of no repair :) I feel like the price point is fair for the quality and made-in-USA construction. Thanks SSS for creating an excellent flat!
  265. Genius!

    Rating

It is so hard to find nice looking, minimalist, women's shoes, let alone something you can wear for any occasion, especially as a business professional. Even more so, ballet flats in general are hard fitting. They either dig into your heel or cut the bones of the big toe (killing your bunion if you have one). The Ballerine is a must have! I feel like I am floating or at least walking on carpet when I wear these shoes. I have only had them for a couple of weeks, and I am absolutely in love! It feels like these shoes have molded to my feet, with impressive ground feel. The leather is extremely soft. They don't dig into my heels at all but grip like a soft leather glove. The only downside is the initial break in with the big toe (like other reviewers). Since these shoes lay on top of your toe, your big toe will stick out and it does put a little pressure that can cause a some discomfort at the tip of the toenail. But have no fear! I wore these around twice with thick socks to stretch out the leather, and it worked beautifully. No issues! I will definitely be back for more in different colors!
  266. Comfy and cute

    Rating

I wear these sport ballerine flats to work and church constantly. The inner soles are very soft on my feet. These shoes have more cushion than some cheap ballet flats I had been wearing previously. I've not owned any others, so I cannot compare to average, but I find them to be very comfortable. The shoes flex very naturally with my foot. I watched the ballet sizing video and decided to order up a size to 7U since I measured near the end of a size 6U. I went back and forth on whether to return for the size I measure to, but decided to keep them since they do have the sport strap. However, next time I'll buy smaller and dampen the shoe to stretch it out like I saw another reviewer mention if I feel the standard size cramps my toes. The shoe is plenty wide - wider than expected (they are my first soft star shoes). I've never needed narrow or wide shoes before. Possibly due to ordering larger than my best fit my shoes pretty quickly ended up with some slightly off putting bubbling (not sure exactly how to describe) around the edges (the leather is very soft), but I imagine no one notices but me. In fact, I was complemented on how cute they are just the other day. I really like the maroon heel and gray edging. They make the shoe unique while still working for my go to black dress shoe. I did initially buy these thinking I might wear them on more casual occasions, but for my style they don't really work out that way. I'm glad I purchased these and plan to purchase some brown ballet flats soon.

So, I was terrified to purchase these when I saw the mixed reviews. I mean I have 2 pairs of the Mary Janes, and they captured my heart. I didn't know if these would be as comfy, or if they would dig into my foot or just not fit right. Anyway, I finally decided to take the plunge. I decided not to upsize too much. Well, when I first put them on they were tight! I was upset. So I wore them around the house all weekend. On Monday I wore them to work. OMG, they STOLE my heart! I felt like I had socks on all day at the office. Every step was pure effortless joy and comfort. When I got home that night I did not even want to take them off. I am so in love with these shoes. They are elegant, casual, and dressy all at once. They are perfect for grocery shopping, or going out to dinner. Seriously, do not refrain from purchasing these shoes for fear that they won't fit right. Try them for yourself. You may find shoe love!!
  269. What a Difference a Little Elastic Makes!

    Rating

I ordered the original Ballerines as soon as they were available, but, to my disappointment, my feet didn't love them as they do my other SS shoes. The heel seemed to come up too high and it rubbed, plus they just didn't want to stay on securely. I decided to take a risk on these Sport Ballerines (especially in such a super non-DYI combination), and I love them. They feel like a different shoe entirely and are great for walking. May just have to order another DYI pair now that I know how perfect they are!

  272. Started skeptical, now I'm in love!

    Rating

Women with large feet, rejoice! Finally a high quality, totally comfortable flat that's good for work, for play, and for relaxing! I'm a women's 12 and these are some of the first flats I've ever owned that don't either squeeze my toes or fall off from poor construction. I was super skeptical when I first put them on- my toes were cramped, the back dug into my heel, and the top seam was stiff. I wore them around the house with two pairs of socks on for an evening, and that helped the toes/seam a lot, but I've always had trouble with the backs of shoes digging into my achilles, and it was still an issue with these. Knowing that I couldn't return them easily, I stuck out a few more days, a few more double layers of socks... and now even the heel has softened just enough to be comfortable, not so much that it slips. For day to day office and errands these are my absolute favorite shoes! They did turn my toes black for about a week, and they don't breathe particularly well in the heat, but all of that was to be expected. Note from the Elves: Thanks for the detailed review and we're so glad you're happy with your shoes. Just a note about the return policy-we do take returns and exchanges on shoes in like new condition, even those that you designed yourself!

I have needed a pair of comfortable ballet flats so I can be a bit more dressy while still wearing minimalist shoes. I absolutely love them! I am a true size 9 in women's shoes (8U in Soft Star shoes), so I tried the 9U because they said some people like to size up because ballet flats can be a bit snug. I ended up getting the 8U, and they have formed nicely to my feet. Thank you for an awesome shoe!

I spend 90% of my time either barefoot our wearing sandals so I wanted a pair of dressy barefoot shoes. I normally wear a size 8 shoe and the size 8u was perfect. I suffer from ingrown toenail pain and these gave me no issue at all, the toe box is just right and I had no issue with ankle rubbing like other flats I've owned. These shoes are the next best thing to being barefoot and look great too!

  279. Great Fit!

    Rating

These shoes have a great fit and are very comfortable.I have had them for 2 months now and I wear them almost every day. I am a little disappointed with the durability considering the price. The glue around the shoe's sole started peeling off by the second week and just isnt holding up like I expected. They do look and feel great however and I would definitely buy again. I am a single mom on a budget, so I do not usually spend this much on shoes for myself. So that being said- durability is the reason I did not give it 5 stars. Note from Elves: Thanks Anna for your feedback! We want to assure you this will not impact the longevity or effectiveness of the bond between the sole and the shoe. When the sole is heated and adhered, sometimes a small bead of glue will be visible along the perimeter of the rubber sole. This glue bead will come off with wear/friction, but the bond between the rubber sole and shoe will not be impacted. Nevertheless, we understand your concern and how it would raise an alarm with your new shoes. Usually the most vulnerable durability of the ballerine is the soft leather itself around the heel where it touches the ground. Because it is genuine leather and not a more abrasive resistant textile, you will notice that over time it will become worn near the heel. This natural wear should happen gradually over the life of the shoe and should not impact its wearability or comfort.
  280. Heel too high

    Rating

As owner of several soft star shoes I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the fit. On these the heel counter is so high that I have to wear them with an inner soul as many other people have mentioned. If you to fix this problem I'd buy a pair and every color
  281. too narrow at tip of toes, height too low at big toe

    Rating

These shoes are made with high quality materials, and the sole is very comfortable and moves with the foot. Also love that they are made in USA. However: 1. The toebox width is not as natural as claimed. They should be widest at the tip of the toes rather than the ball of the foot. This is not the case-- look at their own picture of the model in the shoes from a bird's eye view 2. The height of the upper at the big toe is absurdly low. They caused a little red mark in the skin underneath my toenail from the downward pressure on my toenail (which was cut short), that stayed for weeks. I had to stretch them out with a stack of quarters and cotton balls, which was an imperfect job. I didn't want to stretch out the whole toebox area, so this was difficult. I am sure no one's big toe is that low-- mine doesn't rise higher than my little toes. They should put more material there or pre-stretch it. Perhaps this is similar to reviews complaining of the Phoenix boot pinching their toes. Uggs don't have the problem, and they use real sheepskin too. I shouldn't have to injure my feet for shoes that are claimed to be natural. 3. A little plastic seam or strip where the upper meets the sole came off within a few days of wearing. They are still functional though. By the way, my feet are size 7.5 US and totally normal, perhaps on the narrow side of normal (though I don't order narrow shoes)
  282. Super comfy

I am so happy I bought these. They are buttery-soft and still super durable. I have walked all over with them, spilled stuff on them, accidentally scraped over them with doors and rocks. I know I tend to drag shoes through tough environments, so I did apply a layer of waterproofing beeswax to give them a little more protection. I can slip my feet in to them as slippers around the house in the morning and keep them on all through the day. I can walk miles in these shoes and my feet are happy. Thanks elves for making a dainty little shoe for my wide feet that can handle my adventures!

I've ordered them all in a 7U wide and they've all fit perfectly. After watching the video about the flats and their sizing however, I decided to order the 7U in regular width and they fit great. I wore them for the first time tonight and they are honestly the comfiest shoes by far! I will definitely be ordering more in different colors. I could not be happier!

The ballerine instantly became my favorite shoes! They're super comfortable, easily packable for travel and looks great with anything. I need these in more colors.
  285. Great flats, esp for wide feet

    Rating

Great flats! I'm usually a size 8-8.5 (wideee, very wide). Been mostly in "barefoot style shoes" for years now, because for once my toes can stay happy. These are the best fitting flats I found! I've tried another "barefoot" brand that had leather-like flats and I'm still trying to break them in with not much luck. But these I wore for the first time at my (formal) thesis defense and loved them! No break-in period. I like the slightly high back, they stay on great. Took them on a week long trip where we walked a lot with no issues. The only thing is the leather can generally be a bit hot in summer (just naturally) so I'll prob buy another "lite" pair for long summer walks. They look great - can be worn in formal settings. Sizing - I bought a size women's 9 at first based on reviews but they were wayyy too big. Size 8 womens (size 7 universal) was a good fit for me. I agree with the ballerina sizing video posted - that's been my experience from the 2 sizes. The heel is a little wide for me, but nothing I notice. Already designing another pair in my head!
  286. Wanted to love these!

    Rating

I really wanted to love these, and I love Soft Star Shoes so much it pains me to leave this review. The materials are beautiful, and the shoes are very well made. However, the cut just did not work for me. I love the Soft Star Dash shoes, and these just don't have the same great feel. They come up too high on the heel and rub (I tried them on in my house for a few minutes and got a blister), and the sizing was difficult. I got a 10U which was too small, and an 11U which was too big. I'm happy these work for some people, wish they worked for me!
  287. Second pair

    Rating

I had been wearing my fivefinger exclusively and wanted something to wear with dresses. I bought the shiny platinum pair of flats. I loved them so much I wore them all the time. However shiny shoes don't work with all outfits so I got the black pair. I wear them all the time. If you are not used to this type of shoe it does take a little bit for your foot to adjust to it but well worth the time and energy to get your foot working the way it was intended. Next I need a pair of the ruby red flats in case there is a yellow brick road I need to walk down ;)
  288. Love them

    Rating

I wasn't sure if these shoes were going to work for me, so I wore them around the house for the first week. By then they were a perfect fit, and I sometimes forget I am wearing shoes. Awesome workmanship and worth every penny!
  289. Loving this shoe

    Rating

As others have said, the heel on this shoe is slightly higher and can rub against the heel/ankle. For me, this required a break in period. However, I stuck with the shoe and so glad I did. It has become the shoe I wear every day at work and I am getting loads of compliments on them.
  290. LOVE!!!!

I love these shoes. I went crazy last year ordering them in many different colors and wore them all summer long. Comfortable and beautiful--what more could you ask for?
  291. Best flats ever

    Rating

I wanted to share my review because I read through the reviews of the flats prior to purchasing, and almost didn't purchase them because of some reviews. I want to share my experience and why I love them!! I need to be as free in my gait as possible. I have a job that requires me to not only be on my feet for 8 hours, but be constantly moving, and I must look sharp! Every flat I've ever owned has squished the life out of my toes and has never allowed my foot its proper movement - they have always been restrictive. Having a pair of Soft Stars Phoenix boots - I knew how flexible and minimalist their footwear could be and was excited to purchase flats that were just as flexible! The concerns I read in the reviews worried me. I didn't want them to rub up my ankles like the reviews said happened for some people - I almost didn't buy them, thinking the perfect flat was an idea too good to be true. But I bought them anyway - I was desperate!! And it was worth it! My first day wearing them was an 8 hour, highly mobile shift. By the end of it, there was some rubbing on the inside of each ankle, my right foot got it the worst - a large dime sized blister. I was worried! I didn't want this to continue! I wore a large bandage over the blister and was able to wear a different (less comfortable) shoe the next day as to not pop the blister. The third day, I wore a smaller bandage as the blister had begun to heal, and wore my flats again. This time everything was fine. I have now continued to wear my flats as often as I want without any painful rubbing or blisters - they have stretched out just enough to have little chance of causing blisters! If you're on the fence about these - buy them - they're the most room for your toes and the most flexible for your gait. - they just require a slight breaking-in period to hug your foot just enough - not too much.
  292. Happy birthday to me!

    Rating

These were my birthday gift to me. I already have some Roos and some design-your-own metro Mary Janes, the latter pair was supposed to be for work. But I got the Mary Janes in the wide size, and they just look a little casual (okay...odd) for work. I felt out of place wearing them, but uncomfortable in a non-Soft Star shoe. These flats are perfect. Very cute--they look like normal flats, and very comfortable. It is like they are softly hugging my feet. I wear a traditional size 9 1/2 to 10, and I got the 9U, which fits perfectly. Thanks again, Soft Star.
  293. Very comfortable, but some issues

    Rating

The shoes are extremely comfortable, but as others have said the heel is cut so high, that it digs into your Achilles' tendon. According to the sizing recommendations my size would be an 8U. When I put the sole of the 8U shoe up against the bottom of my foot it looks like a perfect fit, but the shoe is too tight because the heel is cut so high. I imagine this was done to prevent heel slippage. I exchanged the shoes for 9U and they feel much better, but now there is extra room in the back of the heel. The shoe stays on fine, but I only wear them with pants, so no one can see the extra, aprrox. 3/4 cm of the shoe jutting out from the back of the heel. It doesn't sound like much, but it bothers me because they don't look as sharp as they could be. I would love if these shoes were reworked with the heel cut lower. Note from Soft Star: Hi HPP - thanks for the great detail in your review. You are absolutely correct in that the heel is the height it is to keep the shoe from slipping off. We tried many versions of patterns with the heel lower, but it would slip off the foot while walking as ballet flats really don't have much to secure to the foot with. For the healthiest fit in ballet flats, this often means buying them roomier than fashion would prefer.
  294. I really wanted these to work, but...

    Rating

These shoes are beautiful and so well made. I tried my size and then sent them back to try the next size up with no luck. The heel cup is cut super high and digs into my Achilles' tendon. I almost kept them just to wear on occasion, but i just can't pay that much for an occasional shoe.
  295. Very good, but would be better with slight modification

    Rating

These shoes are incredibly soft and flexible. I love the fit from the toe to my ankle. The heels are kind of weird. I have the same problems with slipping & too much pressure on the Achilles tendon, like two other reviewers. It seems to me that there's just too much material at the heel. I can see the bunching/slipping issue in a few of the photos with models, too. (Note: My foot isn't slipping out of the shoe. Rather, it's slipping sideways off the Vibram sole.) A fix that would work for me is this: 1. Move that rounded piece of leather, which serves as structural support at the heel, DOWN half an inch to meet the sole. 2. LOWER the top of the shoe, just at the back, by the same degree that you move the heel piece. (Result would be that the basic shape of the heel piece remains the same.) I'm going to try adding insoles with arch support to see whether that alleviates my problems. This would improve my long-distance walking experience. For light casual wear, however, the shoes are fine as they are.
  296. I adore them

    Rating

These shoes are, hands down, my best ever online purchase. I don't ever want to take them off! I've logged in today to buy another pair…or two. I'm a size 38 and the 7 fits just right. Although some might like a slightly smaller size, I like that it leaves room for my toes to spread. I can walk all day in these without pain. I wore them exclusively over a hot and humid long weekend in Sydney and they don't smell and didn't get sweaty either. Love them.
  297. Lovely!

These look better than Tieks flats on my feet and feel as comfortable as slippers.
  298. Amazing

    Rating

I have never owned comfortable flats. Either the toes pinch or the heels rub but I have worn these for hours from day one and they have been nothing but a dream. I could have gotten a half size smaller I realize now, but they still never slip off my heel. I've had them for 5 months and they look just as nice as the day I got them. They are just slightly dressy and make a great addition to most outfits. Looking forward to buying more soft stars, I've already got my kids in them!
  299. Good, but ouch

    Rating

These are excellent in so many ways, but I still can't wear mine for more than an hour or two at a time because the stiff heel piece rubs blisters on my Achilles tendon. Clearly an individual issue, as so many here are wearing theirs so much!
  300. Perfect Everyday Flats

    Rating

These are the best flats I've ever owned. I'm on my second pair. I wore the first pair literally every day for up to 12 hours a day, probably averaged 3-5 miles/day in them, wore them in the rain, wore them as my running shoes and didn't follow the proper care instructions. So, the fact that the first pair only lasted 2 months, isn't a reflection of the quality. I still wear these shoes daily. They're amazing because they look nice enough to wear with dress pants at work, and the fit is so perfect that I can wear them to jog home after work. It's hard for me to find closed-toe shoes that fit well and are comfortable because I have bunionettes. Wide shoes are too wide everywhere except the toe box and regular shoes are too painful because they rub against the bunionettes. I purchased these in regular with and the soft, stretchy leather is so comfortable. I couldn't be happier with these shoes. Also, shipping to Canada was only $5 with no additional duties or fees and my shoes arrived 1 week after they were shipped. Note from Soft Star: Thanks Beddoed for this great review. We are very surprised you can run in these - we would recommend you also might want to try our Moc3 for running as a safer alternative ;-) or get the sports closure on the Ballerine so they stay on securely after they stretch out down the road.
  301. Wonderful! So comfortable.

    Rating

I bought these shoes to wear to a wedding, and was a bit nervous about having them sent so far (Australia) without having first tried them on. The email elves were very patient and helpful, and they were right - the shoes fit perfectly when I took their advice! I wear womens size 8 and the 6U was exactly right. I have a morton's neuroma and wide feet so I ordered the wide width. While I wish the shoe was a little wider, I think it will stretch with time, and anyway it was wide enough to fit my hobbit like foot plus Correct Toes. I like how the toe is reinforced with an extra piece of leather inside. I can't get over how comfortable the heel box is, and how well they stay on my feet without being too tight!
  302. Beautiful and Amazingly Comfortable

    Rating

This is my first pair of Soft Star shoes and I love them! The size was perfect and they look really cute. I've been wearing them with everything. The color is a little less silver and a little more gold hued than I expected but I like it and can't wait to buy other colors!
  303. the best

    Rating

simply the best quality, design and comfort. i received my ballerines in march and have worn them every single day. i wear them to work in a professional setting and then i wear them on 5 mile walks in the woods. i will order these again and again over the course of the rest of my life. thank you soft star shoes for listening to mine and i'm sure many other's requests to produce a minimalist shoe that works with a business suit.
  304. Ultimate - Foot Health, Comfort and Style

    Rating

I bought a pair in size 12 hoping to make room for correct toes and just to ensure they were roomy. Too much, the 11 is perfect. Actually the 11 seemed almost too small considering I was trying to move to a roomy toe box. But I considered the advice of the Elves and they have adapted perfectly to my feet, giving me a professional enough look for the law office and the comfort I now demand. My correct toes AND the sheepskin innersoles fit and everything is soft and roomy without being sloppy. I've ordered two more pair - the Lite ones for summer and another pair of black JUST in case ..... Love them.
  305. My New Warm Weather Dailies

    Rating

These shoes feel like simple, understated, elegant extensions of my own feet. I can't imagine a more versatile style--I can wear them around the house like slippers, or out for dinner. I'd like to have 5 pairs in every color. Beautifully crafted.
  306. Love These!

    Rating

I applaud the level of craftsmanship that went into tailoring this footwear! Thank you for creating such comfortable and sexy shoes. Great for day wear or at night. As a yoga teacher and massage therapist it's really important for me to have footwear that is custom tailored to fit well and to support my body in all of my athletic endeavors. I highly recommend these shoes because they allow the toes natural room and with soft soles will help to re-build the three arches of the feet and align the body. Can't wait for my next pair of Soft Star shoes!
  307. Perfect!

    Rating

I needed a fancy shoe for 2 weddings and these fit the bill perfectly! They also look great with jeans. I ordered the same size as my Ramblers and Phoenix boots. They stay on my feet (I was concerned about this) and are not too tight. The elves were fantastic and shipping was super speedy!
  308. Adorable!

    Rating

These shoes are adorable and just what I was looking for. I only wish that I had read another reviews post that said these shoes run small! Dang it! I ordered both the Ballerine and the Adult Metro in size 9, to see which style I preferred. The Ballerine is at least 1/2 inch shorter than the Metro in the same size. Also, it could have just been me, but the Ballerine seemed a 1/4 of an inch or so smaller in width in the toe box. Because I am trying to get away from shoes pinching my toes, I decided to stick with the wider Metros. But, I hope to order these again someday in a size 10 and see if that would change my opinion.
  309. Love my new ballerine flats

Fit well. Look good. Feel wonderful. Look forward to other colors and narrow width.
  310. I WANT to love these

    Rating

I really want to love these shoes, but to be honest they don't really work for me. They slip a lot and my gait and foot strike end up being less natural because I'm trying to keep the shoe on my foot. I probably should have sent mine back but I really wanted to make it work. I tried adding some heel pads, which helped a little but not enough. This may be in part a sizing issue - I wear a narrow in the Dashes, so it's possible I just need to wait until more sizes are available.
  311. Fantastic, a little small

    Rating

These shoes are lovely, seem to stay on my feet really well, are light and all I had hoped for. I can't wait for more colors. Just one word of warning: they run smaller than the Merry Janes and other models, at least in my galumphing size. I have the newly slimmed down Metros in size 9, and the soles appear to be a near-perfect match for the size 10 ballerines.
  312. Can't wait for more colors

    Rating

I am thrilled with these. As much as possible I try to wear minimalist shoes for work (professional office). I wear these with skirts, slacks, and even suits sometimes. They stay on my foot nicely and give me lots of toe box room. I wear CorrectToes inside them with no problem.
  313. Very comfortable!

    Rating

Oh I like these flats! So comfortable! Shipping the Netherlands in 1,5 weeks. Thumbsup!
  314. Soo Comfortable, and even cuter!

    Rating

I have a really hard time finding shoes that are comfortable, fit well and are cute as I wear a women's 11 and have a narrow heel with a wide ball. Most ballet flats don't fit me well or give me clown feet but I was so excited when Soft Star anounced the ballet flat as I knew they would be really comfortable. They arrived yesterday and are already my new favorite shoe. They look very nice with professional attire and I plan on wearing them with my suits for work. The best detail about the shoe is the lack of elastic around the Achilles tendon, which makes them supremely more comfortable than any other ballet flat I have ever tried. I hope that Soft Star considers using this detail is some of their other shoes, like the ramblers. I am really glad that I live in CA so this can be a year round shoe for me, and can't wait until they are offered in DYO and other colors!
  315. Finally, the perfect ballet flats

    Rating

I searched and searched for ballet flats that had the right fit and feel. Nothing was working out. Others either pinched my heel, or squished the top and sides of my feet. Or even worse, my feet rolled over the edges and made the shoes look as though they were too small. I have relatively normal sized feet. 7.5 Medium is my size. I had basically given up when I saw that these were a new offering. I'm on the east coast. I ordered and in 2 days they arrived. I slipped them on and my feet were so happy! The feel around the top of my foot is secure but not binding or restrictive. The design of the heel is substantial and comforting. There is no flopping or rolling of these ballet flats. SSS got it right! Thank you so much for designing these, please offer them as a design your own in the future with other color options! Oh, and I wore these all day (Sunday), to church, to a meeting, and walk around a summer camp campus. I walked on concrete, asphat, carpet, wood, gravel, linoleum, tile and other surfaces with no issues or problems. I love the soling material you have chosen for these both inside and out! Note from Soft Star: - Thanks Dorayme! We will be offering Design Your Own color options in Spring 2014
