You can measure your feet or your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our unisex shoe size chart to find the recommended shoe size.

Measure Your Feet...

Place bare foot with heel barely touching the wall and longest toe barely touching the flat spine of a book. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the wall to the book.

Once you have the measurement, look for it on the charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size. Contact us if you have questions.

Note: we do not recommend tracing feet because doing so usually gives a larger measurement.

Caring for Merino Wool Moccasins

The merino wool we use at Softstar is 100% natural fiber grown by merino sheep. The fibers are thinner, softer and longer than regular sheep wool, which is why it is easy to wear next to skin and less likely to cause irritation. Merino wool is not only breathable and antimicrobial, but also anti-wrinkle, anti-static, fire resistant, durable and quick drying.

This material is more resiliant and less likely to need care compared to other wools, but we undestand that accidents happen. If you find you need to clean your Merino Zen moccasins, here are a few tips:

Spot Cleaning

We do not recommend submerging your Zen moccasins in water. Instead, spot treat stains using a microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Wet the cloth and gently blot the stained area. If you need to remove stubborn stains or oils then add a little wool cleaner or baby shampoo to the rag and gently rub the stain. When done, use water to carefully blot/rinse away all soap residue.

If your moccasins become damp from cleaning then allow them to air dry. Avoid placing wet wool moccasins in direct sunlight or next to high heat sources, and never place them in a heated dryer, as this may shrink or otherwise damage the wool.

Removing Pilling

Pilling can occur in some fabrics over time when fibers become loose and form little balls on the surface. The high quality merino wool textile used for Zen moccasins should not create pills from normal use. If, however, your Merino Zen moccasins encounter extreme friction or pick up pills from other fabrics then you can use a sweater stone to remove this fuzz.

To use a sweater stone, gently rub the stone over the wool in a single direction. Be careful to avoid sewn stitches in the shoe as the stone can damage the thread.

    Perfect indoor shoes

    Rating

These are great for wearing in my "no shoes policy" apartment especially when the floors are chilly. They are generously sized, which I appreciate as someone with very wide feet. I find them cozy but breathable, and good at a very wide range of temperatures for that reason. Love these!

My second pair. Wearing the first pair only in the house, the soles started to show wear in around two years. Then, although still more use was left, I lost them on a trip! The elves produced another pair. I DO love the comfort and warmth.

Not Durable and Not For Wide Feet

    Rating

I really wanted to love these moccasins. In fact, I wanted to love them so much I bought a second pair after the first ones fell apart. Unfortunately, both pairs lasted for less than a year of indoor only daily use. The first pair developed holes at the side (I normally wear a SoftStar wide), and wore through the bottom at around 9 months. I repaired with duct tape and got another 3 months before the duct tape took over and I was now wearing a duct tape slipper. I was more proactive with the second pair and added duct tape soles before the soles wore through. But then I had to replace it every month or so and once again hit about 12 months before the sides popped too far. Before they broke down, they were vey comfortable and I was able to wear them basically all the time inside. Unfortunately at this price point, its just not worth it for 12 months of use. I found another zero drop wool slipper from a different company with a rubber bottom and thicker wool that is almost the same price and has held up much better (search for the barefoot review lady). I'll keep buying the RunAmocs and Ramblers but I've given up on slippers that don't have a rubber sole.

    So warm!

Incredibly warm. Not the softest wool tho. Could use a layer of softer (merino) wool just for the inside. Great slippers otherwise. Highly recommended

    Sole durability

Love the shoes the only week part on the shoe is oil based sole witch can dry and crack

    A magical letdown

    Rating

I loved these houseshoes so much. They feel great, they look good, and seem a good build quality. However, within a year or so of wearing indoors only, the bottoms of the shoes starting disintegrating (think little black flakes coming off). Considering their bottoms will last no longer than a $20-$30 pair of house shoes from WalMart, I can't recommend this product.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you Nathan for your review. The bottom of the Zen shoe is a very minimal, Halcyon rubberized fabric for traction/water resistance. This is not a failure mode we have heard of before and would love to connect with you, if possible. The substrate textile under the rubber is quite durable and should last another few years, but would not have the water resistance factor. For some customers we understand they would prefer a rubber sole on their slippers. I will pass along your feedback to consider future designs with thicker soling.

These are the most comfortable, warmest slippers I've ever had. I love that they're made in Oregon, made of wool, and made in a real foot shape. They're great for travel because they can be compacted. They are also just plain good looking! I think they run a little big; next pair I will size down a bit.

    like a warm cloud

    Rating

super cozy with the closed cell foam insole under the wool that comes against your skin protecting your feet from the cold. I use them like a clog too by stepping on the heel and then when i want a more secure fit the heel can be pulled back up to cover the back of your heel as it's designed to.

Customer Questions

The Merino Zen moccasin is suitable for indoor use or for light outdoor use. The thin 0.5mm Halcyon sole provides grippy traction and helps protect the moccasin from moisture, but it is not durable enough for heavy outdoor use. They're great for running errands around town or meeting up with friends, but taking them on hiking trails or scuffing on textured asphalt will cause the sole to wear out more quickly. If you avoid rough use then the durabel wool uppers will have a long life.

Yes, the wool fabric used to make the uppers of our wool shoes is 100% merino wool, which means the ultimate in softness and comfort for your feet. We used the purest and highest quality wool we could find, unlike other wool shoes that are made from blends of lesser wools and synthetics. Of course, the rubberized soles are not made from wool.

YES! Not only is our merino wool material made using ecologically-sustainable methods, it is also sourced from humanely-treated sheep.

While we do our best to source our shoemaking materials from within the United States, we sometimes make exceptions for materials that exceed standards for ethical fashion. Our merino wool is sourced from Germany for the highest quality of soft, durable fibers with ethical animal welfare standards and Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification. This certification ensures it has been tested to show it does not contain any harmful substances. In many cases the limit values for the Standard 100 go beyond international requirements to test for both regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.

No. Even though our merino wool is humanely sourced from ethically-raised sheep, it is still a product from a living animal and is therefore not vegan. Also, leather is still used for the insole of Merino Merry Janes, and leather strips are embroidered into the strap of Merino Zen moccasins.
The Merino Zen moccasin features a toe box that is slightly wider than most Softstar shoes, except for shoes made with our Primal sole shape such as Primal RunAmocs or Primal Sawyers.

The length of the Zen moccasin matches the length of our standard adult Softstar shoes. We recommend ordering these moccasins in your normal Softstar shoe size, or the size that is recommended from our size measurement chart (See the "Sizing" tab for more details). If you have questions about your size then please do not hesitate to contact our friendly customer service elves.

No. The Zen is only available in one width, but with the adjustable Velcro strap you can easily change how snugly or loosely it fits around your instep.

No. At this time, the Merino Zen moccasin is only availalbe in the collection colors shown above.

Yes! We recommend our Sheepskin Plus innersoles with a PRIMAL shape and a REGULAR width. That will be the best fit for the Zen, and these innersoles come with adhesive tape on the underside to keep them in place.
