Caring for Merino Wool Moccasins

The merino wool we use at Softstar is 100% natural fiber grown by merino sheep. The fibers are thinner, softer and longer than regular sheep wool, which is why it is easy to wear next to skin and less likely to cause irritation. Merino wool is not only breathable and antimicrobial, but also anti-wrinkle, anti-static, fire resistant, durable and quick drying.

This material is more resiliant and less likely to need care compared to other wools, but we undestand that accidents happen. If you find you need to clean your Merino Zen moccasins, here are a few tips:

Spot Cleaning

We do not recommend submerging your Zen moccasins in water. Instead, spot treat stains using a microfiber or other lint-free cloth. Wet the cloth and gently blot the stained area. If you need to remove stubborn stains or oils then add a little wool cleaner or baby shampoo to the rag and gently rub the stain. When done, use water to carefully blot/rinse away all soap residue.

If your moccasins become damp from cleaning then allow them to air dry. Avoid placing wet wool moccasins in direct sunlight or next to high heat sources, and never place them in a heated dryer, as this may shrink or otherwise damage the wool.

Removing Pilling

Pilling can occur in some fabrics over time when fibers become loose and form little balls on the surface. The high quality merino wool textile used for Zen moccasins should not create pills from normal use. If, however, your Merino Zen moccasins encounter extreme friction or pick up pills from other fabrics then you can use a sweater stone to remove this fuzz.

To use a sweater stone, gently rub the stone over the wool in a single direction. Be careful to avoid sewn stitches in the shoe as the stone can damage the thread.

    Perfect indoor shoes

    Rating

These are great for wearing in my "no shoes policy" apartment especially when the floors are chilly. They are generously sized, which I appreciate as someone with very wide feet. I find them cozy but breathable, and good at a very wide range of temperatures for that reason. Love these!

My second pair. Wearing the first pair only in the house, the soles started to show wear in around two years. Then, although still more use was left, I lost them on a trip! The elves produced another pair. I DO love the comfort and warmth.

Not Durable and Not For Wide Feet

    Rating

I really wanted to love these moccasins. In fact, I wanted to love them so much I bought a second pair after the first ones fell apart. Unfortunately, both pairs lasted for less than a year of indoor only daily use. The first pair developed holes at the side (I normally wear a SoftStar wide), and wore through the bottom at around 9 months. I repaired with duct tape and got another 3 months before the duct tape took over and I was now wearing a duct tape slipper. I was more proactive with the second pair and added duct tape soles before the soles wore through. But then I had to replace it every month or so and once again hit about 12 months before the sides popped too far. Before they broke down, they were vey comfortable and I was able to wear them basically all the time inside. Unfortunately at this price point, its just not worth it for 12 months of use. I found another zero drop wool slipper from a different company with a rubber bottom and thicker wool that is almost the same price and has held up much better (search for the barefoot review lady). I'll keep buying the RunAmocs and Ramblers but I've given up on slippers that don't have a rubber sole.

Incredibly warm. Not the softest wool tho. Could use a layer of softer (merino) wool just for the inside. Great slippers otherwise. Highly recommended

  7. A magical letdown

    Rating

I loved these houseshoes so much. They feel great, they look good, and seem a good build quality. However, within a year or so of wearing indoors only, the bottoms of the shoes starting disintegrating (think little black flakes coming off). Considering their bottoms will last no longer than a $20-$30 pair of house shoes from WalMart, I can't recommend this product.

    Response from store

Note from the Elves: Thank you Nathan for your review. The bottom of the Zen shoe is a very minimal, Halcyon rubberized fabric for traction/water resistance. This is not a failure mode we have heard of before and would love to connect with you, if possible. The substrate textile under the rubber is quite durable and should last another few years, but would not have the water resistance factor. For some customers we understand they would prefer a rubber sole on their slippers. I will pass along your feedback to consider future designs with thicker soling.

These are the most comfortable, warmest slippers I've ever had. I love that they're made in Oregon, made of wool, and made in a real foot shape. They're great for travel because they can be compacted. They are also just plain good looking! I think they run a little big; next pair I will size down a bit.

super cozy with the closed cell foam insole under the wool that comes against your skin protecting your feet from the cold. I use them like a clog too by stepping on the heel and then when i want a more secure fit the heel can be pulled back up to cover the back of your heel as it's designed to.

I bought these as I wanted a lighter slipper than the fireside. These are lovely warm, roomy and comfortable. I typically need a 4E mens width, and these slippers fit with room.

    Not for wide feet

    Rating

Super comfortable and adorable, but I wish there was a wide (or primal) width available. I'd ripped out the edges of the felt by the inside ball of the foot joint on both slippers within only a few months of (daily, inside) wear. Better for lounging and casual indoor wear than probably the daily inside wear it got during early pandemic. For now enjoying the fireside sheepskin slippers instead but if a wide version of these is ever re-released (especially with a leather sole instead of thin rubber that also wore through in that same timeframe) I'd be all over them.

    Great moccasins

    Rating

This is my second pair to wear around the house during the day; I wear them every day for hours probably about 9 months of the year. I get them a size larger than my usual size so that I can wear socks with them and have them be very roomy. They keep my feet a very comfortable temperature. My first pair did wear out after about 2 years (got holes in the wool where the soles are attached, and the outer soles got very thin) so they may not last as long as some other types of slippers. I also have a pair that I put the sheepskin liners in and use them only for nighttime. After a year + they still look like new.

Although I have only had my shoes for a few days, I feel compelled to write a review. I am so very pleased to have found these slippers! I have difficulty finding shoes that will work for my feet; I have narrow heels but need a wide toe bed. I have spent so much money thinking I might have found the perfect slipper only to be disappointed. Well, I think I finally now have the perfect one for me! am now a big Softstar fan! Thank you so much for creating this excellent slipper!
  18. Not durable for wide feet

    Rating

I got these for Christmas last year, didn't wear them during the warmer months, and not quite a year later, both shoes have developed holes in the felt near the sole on the outside of the ball of the foot. I wear a wide in the Merry Jane and Solstice. When I first put these on, I could tell that half my little toe and a strip along the outer ball of my foot was hanging off the insole. I knew that wear was going to be an issue in that spot. But it quickly stopped feeling awkward, there was plenty of room in the toebox and they were just so warm and comfy that I didn't want to send them back. I've really enjoyed wearing them, but for this price, I wouldn't buy another pair unless there was a version with a larger sole.

Love the look, design, material, and comfort of these shoes and already ordered a second pair. At first I felt they were a little baggy on my skinny foot but I’ve grown to love the fit. Got sheepskin insoles for winter but I prefer the soft wool sole it comes with, just enough padding to feel comfortable while still feeling firmly planted on the floor. LOVE the Velcro for it’s ease for my husband to put on my foot ( I’m a wheelchair user) though a few people said they would prefer a different closure.

    Great with one flaw

    Rating

I absolutely love these slippers. They're *almost* perfect. The one flaw is that the sole wears out very quickly. I've had these slippers about six months--wearing only in the house and on the front porch--and the bottoms have worn to slick zero-grip. This has lead to several slips around the house which frankly could be incredibly dangerous if I wasn't as young as I am. For the $125 that these cost, I would have imagined they would last long than six months without becoming a safety hazard. Keep that in mind if you're ordering.

    Rating

Oh. My. God. These are hands down the best slippers I have ever owned. As a huge fan and fairly long time Softstar customer, I knew these would likely be good, but these are way past that. They are terrific with socks and even better barefoot. The wool is not scratchy at all and barefoot it seems to keep my feet even more toasty than wearing socks. And comfort? Off the charts. For sizing I followed the advice of others and went 1 size larger and the fit is perfect. The only thing I would change on them is the Velcro closure. Function wise the closure is flawless, but when I wake in the morning before my wife, the loud “ripping” sound of the Velcro closure is very annoying. I would explore quieter options- for instance, I understand that 3M makes a “mushroom” head style of similar closure that is far quieter. But I am really nitpicking. Even with the Velcro noise I would rate these slippers an 8 on a 5 star scale. They really are that good.

  32. Wonderful Slipper, But Needs Thicker or Better Sole

    Rating

My entire family loved these when I got them around Christmas last year. Very warm, and very comfortable. That said, unfortunately, the soles don't last all that well, at least not for the price. My mom who wears these the most wore a hole in the sole in less than 9 months, and after I looked at mine and noticed the sole was also starting to wear through, so have been putting on a light layer of shoe goo in the most high traffic parts. For all that, I'm still ordering another pair for my mom, but will be sure to put some "goo" on her sole to help keep them from doing that again. Suggest the sole should either be thicker, or, possibly leather instead like the Roo's.

Delightful Slippers, Smaller Than Primal RunAmocs

    Rating

I have had my current pair of Zens for several months and I love them, though it took a second try to get a good fit (size 11U). They’ve been great as I work from home - I wear them around the home office and wear them while I walk throughout the day on an under-desk treadmill. I like the ample toe box, light weight, sturdy construction, and their soft, warm feel. This is my second pair, and I’m glad I ordered this pair in one size larger (11U) than what I wear in Primal Dash RunAmoc (10U). This larger size allows me to wear socks and still have just enough room around my toes for long days of cramp-less comfort. When new, they seemed stiff and almost too roomy at first, but now they feel cozy and supple after several months of constant wear. Before this larger pair, I received a pair as gift, in my RunAmoc size (10U). While those Zens fit like a glove at first, they were just tight enough and short enough in the toe box (even without socks) that they cramped my toes and made them hurt. They never stretched-out.

My first SoftStar purchase! I've been a Vivobarefoot customer for about a year now, but they don't have slippers. Also, I wanted to buy American and not wait so long for international shipping. I'm really happy to report that I am totally satisfied with my purchase. Also, really cool returnable shipping package!! I didn't realize I purchased a size too big but I just measured my feet and that explains why mine feel so loose. But I don't mind it and the velcro keeps it from causing any issues. These have been wonderful to wear around the house. I usually had problems with my feet being too cold or sweating in slippers! That hasn't happen with these and they feel like a sturdy, perfect pair. I hope I won't have to replace them any time soon but I know where to get a replacement pair when I will.

I absolutely love these. Bought them over a year ago for myself and my husband. We wear them all the time and they still look like new. I recently purchased Primal Merry Janes and I removed the thin wool insert from these slippers and put them in my Primal Merry Janes. I then put the sheepskin liners I had intended to put in my Primal Merry Janes and put them in these slippers instead. Perfection.
  37. Consider Ordering a Size Up

    Rating

I love the pair of Zen moccasins my partner got me for Christmas 2020. My only complaints are the sizing and cushioning. The moccasins seem to be too tight on my feet, even though they are advertised as the same size I wear in SoftStar's Primal RunAmocs - a size 9U. The Zens push my toes inward and jam the toe into the joints, making them unsuitable for daily use now after several months. I wear them without socks because of what is already a tight fit. I feel like the Zens run small, because I love the Primal RunAmocs that are also a size 9U. I suggest folks with feet on the border opt for the large size, since the Zens seem to be slightly shorter than the Primal RunAmocs; my feet measure at the larger-end of a 9U, but don't quite make it into a 10U; I'd go for a 10U in the Zens but keep the 9U in Primal RunAmocs. For the cushioning on the soles, the cushioning seemed very fluffy, especially after coming from the fluff-less Primal RunAmocs. Though, I was able to make the Zens less fluffy by removing one of the two layers of orange foam that hide underneath the merino insole. Otherwise, the Zens have great build quality and have been suitable for house, garden, and grocery runs (when the weather's dry). I plan to buy another pair soon, but one size up.

Very Comfy & Practical but Short-Lived

    Rating

Purchased this when I found myself working from home most of the time during COVID. They felt like a dream! They’re the lightest and most confortable pair of shoes I’ve worn indoors. I loved the warmth during winter. Unfortunately they developed a tear right along the seam between the upper and lower. I reached out to Customer Service but they don’t repair that. They need to come up with a reinforced version along the seams and I need to find a way to patch it myself.

Note for the Elves: Hello Pedro- we understand your frustration that the shoes developed a tear after 9 months, and sent an email last week. It looks like you may not have received it and we will reach out again.

Not the Best for Narrow Feet

    Rating

Reading the other reviews, I knew that they weren't going to fit as well as I would like, but I still love them. I have a narrow, low-volume foot, so even with the velcro fully tightened, I still have a lot of space. Luckily for me, they are slippers and a little looseness isn't a big deal. I wish the stitching on the heel could be altered slightly so you have the option to slip it on or unvelcro and put your foot in fully. (But first I'd take it in narrow!)

I got these after seeing my daughter wearing a pair. I have had cozy wool slippers before, but these are the best. They are warm, yet lightweight. I think the charcoal grey wool with the cognac leather is a very attractive combination.

I'm on my second pair, now. The first pair eventually wore out thanks to constant use during the pandemic, with a little help from my dogs (on an occasion or two when I left the house and forgot to put them up high). :-/ One potential drawback is that the bottoms got a little slippery after a lot of wear (in a mostly carpeted house). We moved from that house to a mostly not carpeted house and I found they were a little slippery on my new wooden stairs. I'm hoping the new pair won't get as slippery on the bottom without all the carpeting to "polish" them.

I measured my feet by using the printable sizing template and ordered the corresponding size. I usually wear a men's size 11 in Brannock device sizing; Softstar's size template recommended a size 10. The resulting fit is great. There's not a ton of excess space in front of the toes, the width of the slippers is great for toe splay, and there's plenty of vertical space for toes to wiggle around as well. So, you can trust the template! Between the wool felt outer, insole, and a thin layer of padding, these kept my feet warm on cold winter days, on tile and hardwood floors. I'm not wild about the velcro closure, not because there's anything wrong with it, in and of itself, but because it means that these shoes don't quite have the convenience of true "slippers." But once these are on, they stay on - and I do like that the fit is very secure. I endorse these enthusiastically.

Faerie Feet ~ walking on clouds

    Rating

I love the colors. I love the texture. I love the cut and the fit. THIS is a great shoe! I almost made it an indoor slipper, but it's just so cozy that I had to see how it would do about town. It was GREAT!! I will be curious to see how quickly it wears out as it is wool. I will likely buy these again and again-- but hopefully not too soon.
  51. Versatile fit! Even accommodate orthotics!

    Rating

My Zen Mocs are a perfect and versatile fit! Custom orthotics and toe spaces are both tools in my foot rehab program. Orthotics actually stay in place with the Velcro closure making for a nonslip fit along with the firm but comfy sole /insole system that keep the orthotics from listing this way and that. The toe box accepts toe spacers comfortably. Zens are a bit narrow at the ball of my foot (I wear a primal regular) but there’s nice give and the extra flange around the felt insole gently cradles that width while hugging my extra narrow heel....amazing! Love ‘em!

Love slipping into these slippers for all day comfort and warmth. Our rooms have either laminate or ceramic tile, which can be very uncomfortable and cold for both bare and socked feet. My Softstar slippers are also much safer for negotiating our wooden stairs and grip whereas socks do not. I highly recommend these slippers!

    The best slippers

    Rating

I really love these slipper/shoes. They’re shaped perfectly for my feet and they’re barefoot-y but still soft to the step. Much, much more secure than walking around in the warm slip-ons I’d been wearing. I immediately ordered a second pair, despite the price.

    The house shoe solution!

    Rating

I had been eyeing these for a few months before I bought them as a gift for my partner. It's cold in Minnesota. Our home is 120 years young. We've gone through multiple pairs of other brands of slippers and house shoes with complaints like foot sweat, terrible odors, lack of durability, grime build up, lack of warmth, and bulkiness. These shoes win in all of those categories! I quickly became envious and bought a second pair for myself. My sole wish is that they were offered in narrow, as I wear a 12u but have flat, low-volume feet and these have almost too much width and depth for me. It's a small gripe and does not take away from this shining review! This is my third pair of Softstars and I am not stopping anytime soon!

    SO comfy

    Rating

These are SO warm/cozy/comfy. I wear RunAmoc Primals size 11 (extra wide) and got these in size 11. At first they felt a little narrow but it ended up being OK after using them once or twice. I use these as my "indoor work shoes" at work (office job w/ casual dress code) during the winter. They feel AMAZING on my feet.
  58. Happy Feet!

    Rating

I have been looking for an unlined slipper that did not make my feet smell. These are perfect! I got them as a gift from my husband and boys for Christmas. They were a little worried about the support, but the pad inside the sole is the perfect amount of support. I wear them with and without socks. We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the winters are very cold and these keep my feet warm without sweating. I have worn them daily since Christmas and they still look like new. They are true to size and the roomy toe box is very comfortable
  59. Perfection

    Rating

These are my very first Softstars, and they are heaven. I change into them when I get to my office each morning. They are beautiful enough to be professional, but help me feel settled in and cozy. They are soft enough that I can tuck my feet up in my chair, but plenty durable to walk around the building during my day. I just love them!
  60. Working Shoes

    Rating

I bought these for household/bakery use and have worn them for a few days now. With the Merrell's plummeting quality, I wanted a zero drop that would hold up for more than 6 months. So far the fit is great with the velcro making it easy to adjust. My feet can get too hot and it is Winter here, but so far my feet are breathing well and staying comfortable. The padded insole is nice and the traction of the sole works without having all that tread to collect anything I step in. The wheat-like motif is an added bonus!

    Rating

I think my feet are finally the warmest they’ve been since winter set in. I’m a half size and sized up so I could wear socks with these. Easy to wear in and comfy from the moment I put them on. We live in an ancient house and these are just the best for keeping my feet warm, walking around on our cold floors all day!
  65. Search is over for the perfect slipper

    Rating

I've tried half a dozen slippers over the last couple of years, and I'm happy the search is over. I was searching for a non-slip slipper that is comfortable, easy to put on, and doesn't make my feet too warm. I purchased the sheepskin insole, but the cushioning in the moccasin is an extra bonus. I'm extra sensitive to wool, but this wool doesn't itch me, and the velcro makes it fit just right. I hope you continue making this moccasin.
  66. Love them but Killed them

    Rating

Bought these back in mod-September as the weather began to turn in New England and house shoes become a necessity. I wore them every evening and stayed in the house only with them (maybe a jaunt or two onto the stoop but no real outside time). They are warm, cozy well fitting and I love that they are adjustable with the velcro. Unfortunately, a week or so before Christmas the felted wool on the right foot tore and created a very large hole at the seam of the sole. I don't see any repair possible and I can't spend another $125 to replace them after 4 months. I am utterly disappointed with their durability. Maybe I'm too much foot for these slippers. I want to recommend them as I do love them and have been wearing them torn but I don't know how much longer they will last. I hope the elves can increase the durability in version 2.0

    Adorable shoe, not durable

    Rating

I love love love, the style of these slippers!! Sadly, it wasn't more than a couple of months before the wool started to pull away from the soul. I have several holes all around the toe box. The bottom of the slipper also has worn terribly down to the cloth. They are still very comfortable, but sad that they are falling apart. I had a pair of roo slippers for 10 years and was confident in the companies shoe construction. However, disappointed in these slippers.

    Response from store

Hello Laura- thank you for your review. It is true the Roo mocs are more durable for harder use or outdoor use which is why we specify the Zen to be an indoor only shoe. Like you, we expect an indoor shoe to last longer than 10 months. We will reach out to understand if they might be too small or if a Roo might be more helpful to you for your use case.

  70. Wonderful slippers

    Rating

These shoes are beautiful and beautifully constructed. I find them very comfortable and toasty with and without socks. The sizing is perfect for wearing without socks or with thin socks. If you plan to wear them with thick socks, consider sizing up. Getting my feet completely in requires assistance from my hands, but the slippers work as slip-ons if I smoosh down the heels. I can't yet speak to longevity as I've had mine for only a month, but if they prove lasting, I would definitely purchase again. (Is that a logical fallacy, LOL?)

These are nice and wide without being sloppy on my feet. However, the velcro isn't my favorite. I can't tighten them as much as I would like. Work best with socks on for me, but I don't want to do that all the time. I wish it was a button closure or something. So over velcro. Seems contradictory to the lovely natural wool.

These are not so great for stealth trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The velcro is loud. But they're as comfortable as advertised, they keep the feet warm, and they're adorable. They give ample space for toes if you use Correct Toes, which is why I got them.
  76. Perfect house shoes

    Rating

I love these so much, I'm afraid I'll forget to change shoes someday when I leave the house. The only downside is that they don't work as well for bedroom slippers--cannot step into them when getting out of bed--but the upside of that is that they are very secure when I run up and down the stairs all day chasing children and doing housework.

    Attractive, comfortable and warm!

    Rating

I treated myself to a pair of these as the temps dipped and our wood floors got cooler again. They are warm and incredibly lightweight and I like the rubberized sole so that when I fill my bird feeders or do other light chores outside they don't get wet. And no slipping on the floors! They're a bit big on my feet, but I have the smallest size they make, so I just wear them with socks and the fit is fine then. I love wool clogs but I hate the bulky sole and tighter toe box on most other brands, so these Mocs are just right. It's as if nothing is on your feet at all!

I am in love with these slippers. They are warm, but not hot. I have a wide foot with a high instep and it is not an issue. The sizing is in line with the other softstar shoes I have purchased. The velcro make them quite adjustable. Plenty of room for toes and socks (if you want to wear them). The insole has a nice cushion. The sole is nice so if you need to step outside for a moment the bottom won't get ruined. These are my new favorite things....I even bought my mom some!

I have been trying to go barefoot more, I think it's good for my feet. When I put on my old Ugg slippers my toes get squished but I need some warmth. I have worn the Soft Star slippers for a few weeks now and I love them. They are warm enough and don't squish my toes. They are a little wide for my narrow feet but that's ok for a slipper.

    Seasonless Slippers

    Rating

After the disappointment of many pairs of regular slippers whose padding gets squished down until the footwear falls off your foot at every step, I feel these are the best! I wear them as house slippers on bare feet and refrain from wearing them outside at all. My hands and feet are generally cold in any kind of air conditioning and they have kept my feet cozy while I sit at my desk working for long periods of time. During the winter months I plan to pair them with socks for extra warmth as needed! There’s plenty of room in the toes for me to wear my CorrecToes toe spacers, and the Velcro closure allows me to adjust how snug I want to wear the slippers. I haven’t had any issues with insoles or the like, and am confident these will last for many years!
  82. All I expected and more

    Rating

I bought the Zen Moccasins for my 89 year old grandma. Her feet show the poor effects of wearing “tennis shoes” and the like, all these years, so I’ve been searching for something comfy, wont trip her up when she’s shuffling and can hardly see the ground, and would be easy to get on. Wow! I found it! The strap across the top make her feet slide in smoother than her slippers! That also makes up for some strange misshaping of her feet; the top of her foot is what usually gets stuck trying to get into a shoe. She has worn them everywhere with no problems. She doesn’t leave the house a lot but when we do, it’s often to the woods, and these Zens hold her up there just fine. She just left for church, in her silky slacks and blouse and I put her Zen Mocs on her instead of her old pair of “nice church shoes” and they STILL look great! The wine color went well with her neutral toned clothes. I couldn’t be more pleased with the Merino Wool Zen Moccasins. I’ll never buy her a different shoe again. But I expect I will buy several more Zen Mocs for her and us too! Thanks SoftStar, for helping me finally meet the needs of our feet! ????

    Rating

I have worn these slippers every day since we started working from home. They are amazing. At first, I was worried because the wool was a bit "scratchy", especially on the top next to where the velcro is. This stopped being a problem after about a week of daily indoor wear. They are comfortable, soft, breathable (no smell!), and are now my favorite shoes. I've since purchased other Softstar shoes, but for indoor wear, my feet are naked without these cute slippers. <3
  84. Yay for the Elves!

    Rating

Wow, do I love these slippers! Not sure why so many were complaining about slippy insoles; mine seem fine and are very comfortable to walk in. I love the cool “Dutch-cloggy” design, and I can “set and forget” the Velcro closure so that I can easily do a one finger pull at the heel to get them on...no need to open/close the flap each time. These look like they will last a long time just wearing around the house. Great job, elves!!

I bought these to wear around the house during this Covid-19 work from home time. I like the wide toebox and they are very comfortable to wear everyday. The insole does slip a bit, but its easy enough to pull it back into place.
  87. Perfect shoe

    Rating

Exceedingly comfortable, I give these shoes very high marks. Especially pleased with the wide toe box, plus the extra depth. I have trouble with some Softstar shoes and their flat toe box, but not these. I thought the Primal RunAmocs were the most comfortable shoe ever, but these are amazingly even better - these clear my high instep more comfortably. I look forward to the same design in leather, as an outdoor shoe.

Nope, I Do NOT Like These Slippers

    Rating

I have no problem with the excellent craftsmanship or appearance. They look great and the wool felt is wonderful. The elves did a great job of putting them together. My problem is with the actual design and function. I found the insole to be horrible and creepy feeling. The foam pushed back relentlessly against my feet in a very unlikable way. I ended up waiting too long to return them, so I figured I could just peel out the insole, which I did. I was DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED to find that wool felt does not cover the bottom of these slippers, but instead is affixed to the paper-thin sole at the edges. The bottom of these slippers is just a very thin sole! I don't believe they will be durable at all, and they certainly aren't comfortable as is, even with the wool felt insole replaced. I had a couple of sheepskin insoles which I put in -- still not comfortable -- and then put the wool felt insoles over the sheepskin, which makes them better. I've got them now, so I'll probably wear them, but I have no confidence the ultra-thin sole will last long at all, at which point the slippers will be useless. For the price, these slippers should have felt on the bottom, and then the outer sole, for durability and comfort.

    Response from store

Thanks Lois for your review. Rest assured, the outer sole has been used by us on moccasins for over 20 years and is quite durable for a slipper. We look forward to hearing from you again after you have had a chance to wear them for a while.

    Almost perfect

    Rating

I love these slippers however, the removable insoles tend to slide to the back of the shoe when I walk, causing my toes to hang over the front and contact the lining underneath. I fear this will eventually lead to breakdown. Love your company.
  90. Cute and Comfy

    Rating

These are so cute and comfy. I absolutely love them. Definitely more comfortable for all-day indoor wear then my felted wool bedroom slippers. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lightweight indoor shoe.
  91. Minimal and Cozy

    Rating

I wanted something minimal but cozy. I wanted a totally flat bottom, but not something that included no foam. These slippers are my go-to footwear at home. They are warm and roomy and have a really stylish appearance. On the down side, I also experienced itchiness and irritation around the ankle. I simply wear them with the heel down. The material is so thin, it is easy to do, and it makes putting them on quite fast and easy.
  92. Excellent!

    Too warm!

    Rating

I really like the Poron midsole and the removable wool insole! That is so awesome for making these a long-lasting slipper. The velcro top was a little tight for my husband's foot volume; but somehow these amazing shoes have improved his walking posture in our stone-floor house! In other slippers he "shuffles", which he's been trying to change; but in the right (snug) size of the Zen, he naturally walks with an elegant "Zen" body-awareness mindfulness! I'm giving 4 stars because for me, on the other hand, these slippers were way too warm and itchy, and I don't want to wear socks with them. I have some felted wool slippers from another handmade company that don't make my feet as hot.
  97. Everything I have ever dreamed of.

I love wool. I love how it wicks moisture and keeps me warm. I recently have replaced many of my old winter items with wool...hat, jacket, gloves... I was thinking one evening...."I would love wool shoes". It was the next evening I got the email about these. I bought them promptly. Three days later they were in my mailbox. Then my feet. What a dream. I have been wearing barefoot shoes for 4 years. When I put these on, it was like wearing a hug. They fit me PERFECTLY...like as if my foot was molded and a shoe was designed for them. They are SO COOL!! The toe seam gives such character and the leafy design sings to my earthy spirit. I could gush for thousands of words about how amazing these shoes are but I will save you... If you are on the fence, try them. They are the best!

I was lucky enough to get an early tester release of the Zen — thank you Elves! They are now my favorite pair of shoes. I was told these are for indoor use but I’ve been wearing them out. 99. This merino moc is crazy comfortable!

    Rating

My Zens are easy to put on and warm. I originally intended these to be house slippers, but they have found their way to work and out on errands. I wear them more as a casual shoe and they are my go-to pair. I walk down our gravel driveway to bring out the trash and am aware of the rocks, but the soft innersoles provide cushioning – so it is a good experience even though I know these are not designed as outdoor footwear. The fit is great on my feet both with and without socks. They seem to resist water and my feet stay dry. People stop me and ask about them all the time.
  100. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could

    Rating

I have been an early tester for this product. The fit is terrific and they are quick to put on. Sometimes I am in a hurry and pull the flap at a strange angle but they still fit perfect. They are extremely comfortable, lightweight and warm and if wearing socks I forget I have them on. The reason I would like to take off a half a star is because I wish they were made out of leather. After a few hours, I have to put socks on because my skin starts to be itchy at my ankle. With socks on I can wear them all day, but sometimes I don’t want to bother with socks. By the way, I can’t wear wool sweaters at all so I was worried about this but they are fine unless I’m wearing them for a long time. I’ve been wearing these now for 2 months and they have not stretched at all and still look new – I have the brown colored ones.

The Merino Zen moccasin is suitable for indoor use or for light outdoor use. The thin 0.5mm Halcyon sole provides grippy traction and helps protect the moccasin from moisture, but it is not durable enough for heavy outdoor use. They're great for running errands around town or meeting up with friends, but taking them on hiking trails or scuffing on textured asphalt will cause the sole to wear out more quickly. If you avoid rough use then the durabel wool uppers will have a long life.

Yes, the wool fabric used to make the uppers of our wool shoes is 100% merino wool, which means the ultimate in softness and comfort for your feet. We used the purest and highest quality wool we could find, unlike other wool shoes that are made from blends of lesser wools and synthetics. Of course, the rubberized soles are not made from wool.

The Merino Zen moccasin features a toe box that is slightly wider than most Softstar shoes, except for shoes made with our Primal sole shape such as Primal RunAmocs or Primal Sawyers.

The length of the Zen moccasin matches the length of our standard adult Softstar shoes.
