What makes a Classic…classic? Is it the quality? The clean, versatile design? The sense of history? Sure, and this shoe certainly has it all. However, we know the real reason families have turned to the Classic for three decades is simple: it works! Perfect for year-round wear, this closed-toe, smooth leather shoe keeps out sand, dirt, water, and anything else the playground can dish out. An easy adjustable Velcro strap at the ankle allows kids to pull these shoes on and off themselves for uninterrupted, independent adventures. Thin and flexible rubber soles promote natural foot movement and development, and genuine sheepskin innersoles can be added for warmth, comfort, and natural moisture-wicking. From first steps to first hikes, nothing beats a Classic!

Great, sturdy shoes! Review by Hannah
My daughter got her first pair of this style of shoe before she was walking, so they were constantly being scraped across our concrete patio as she crawled around the backyard (as I said to her: "let's peel off the cow skin instead of your skin, honey"). After about 6 weeks, the decorations are definitely showing signs of wear, but the shoes are keeping her feet safe and they STAY ON. We will definitely be buying another pair when she outgrows these! Awesome Review by Mom of 2
I was skeptical to spend so much on shoes for a 3 year old, but decided i'd rather buy one pair of great shoes than 3 low quality ones. These are the best purchase I've ever made and I can't imagine not purchasing them again for every year of my daughter's life (Posted on 11/9/16)
LOVE Them Review by Michelle
My 3 year old son hates wearing shoes, but loves his Soft Star shoes! They are easy for him to get on and he doesn't try to take them off as soon as he sits down. They are durable, adorable, and give the perfect amount of support for developing feet. (Posted on 12/28/15)
Love love love Review by HK
I'll start by saying that I don't think there are better, healthier, safer, more adorable shoes available for children than Soft Star and I'm a total convert. The leather is beautiful, wears well, no chemicals, and there are no poke-y or scratchy parts.
I initially bought 1 pr Classics and 1 pr Ramblers for my almost-2yo son. He wouldn't wear the Ramblers because they were too hard to get on-- too tight, but these he took to immediately. LOVED the velcro. I was shocked that I could return the Ramblers and bought a 2nd pr of Classics. My 2 concerns were the large rim on the outside and the sole being too thick. The rim was a bit of a problem at first but he adjusted to it quickly. It still catches occasionally at the toe and he faceplants, but this happens with other shoes too. The positive about the rim is that there are no seams on the inside so he doesn't get blisters and chafing like he did with Pedipeds. But Elves: if there is any way to cut down the amount of rim in the design it would be ideal. Re sole: You can order these with the thinner sole and I almost did, but I am so happy I didn't. He runs outside so much they would be gone by now and he's only had them for a couple of months. And lastly, superficially, there is not a day that goes by without someone coming up to me and gawking over them. (Posted on 11/3/15)
beautiful & comfortable shoes Review by Musical Mama CT
these are the 3rd pair of soft star shoes we purchased for our now 18 month old daughter (2 child classics and 1 moccasin)... this company, their customer service ethic, the quality of the shoes... all A+ ! we splurged on the dyo child classic and couldn't be more pleased. it was great fun designing our own shoe and our daughter loves them! thank you! we will be customers forever! Nice design, but soles too thick. Review by Berta
We were very excited to find Soft Star, because our son had grown out of the largest sizes offered by other sources we'd been using for minimalist baby and toddler shoes. His first pair were a Christmas gift, and while the design is solid and construction excellent, we were sorry to see that the sole is much thicker than we'd expected. His current shoes have 1/8" Vibram soles, which give good protection from rocks and thorns while still being very flexible and allowing him to feel the ground. From pictures, I thought the Soft Star soles were similar. It turns out that these soles are about 3/8" thick and foamy. They don't provide the ground feel and flexibility we were looking for. Adorable! My kid loves them, too! Review by Mara
It was so much fun when the box with my order arrived - the shoes were more beautiful than I thought they would be! Just precious! But the best part is my daughter loves them and won't take them off. This is new - normally she kicks off her shoes as soon as she can. I will be back for more. (Posted on 11/13/14)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
