Love them!! Review by Patricia

I wasn't sure how durable these shoes would be, but I take long walks in them and work in them, and they are holding up fantastic! They feel like a soft glove on my feet. I am as happy as can be with them! (Posted on 2/8/17)
1st toe problems Review by Diana

I ordered a 6U wide because I am wide - in the toes. I usually wear a 36 regular in Birkenstocks, sometimes a 37. Because of the tapering in the Merry toe box, I have sadly had to return them. The elves tell me they are working on a new sole which will allow 1st toe freaks to dance in their shoes. Can't hardly wait. I'm such a huge fan of zero drop shoes! It's helping me resolve years of foot problems. I honestly thought someone would have to pry my cold dead feet out designer shoes, but that's not the case when it comes to health and comfort. When they do come out with this new sole, they should keep the old one, just in case someone has bunions.

Where do I apply to be a foot model? (Posted on 12/7/16)

These shoes are super comfortable. I have wide feet and the wide width on these are perfect. I bought them in black as well because I enjoy them so much. Can't wait to add other colors soon. (Posted on 11/9/16)
Very very painful Review by krixtar
Rating
These shoes were horribly painful for me to wear at first. Even after a few months of having them, if I don't wear them for a while, I will notice they hurt again when I wear them. The toe box is sooooo tight that it presses on my toe nails, painfully. The first time I wore them, my toe nails were so bruised for days I couldn't wear anything except sandals. After I 'broke them in', they hurt a lot less, but even now when I put them on, they are so tight over my nails that they are painful to wear. Plus the colour is coming off the outside, they scuff super easily. I'd return them if I could but they're very worn and I've had them for a while. If it weren't for that, I'd rate them very high because they're so comfortable for walking in (in terms of other foot pain). I had no idea shoes could even hurt the top of my foot so much until I had these. The bottom is better though :P

Note from Elves: Dear Krixtar - It sounds like this is possibly a sizing issue. Please forward your review to us via email along with this response so we can help get you into a proper fit. The "Aged" leathers do scuff easily and are tanned to show scratches as they are a "distressed" leather. (Posted on 11/6/16)
LOVE my MJ's! Review by Melissa
Rating
I have two pairs of these fabulous shoes, one in chocolate that I bought at an end of year sale at a discount, and one in black with flower cutouts that I designed myself. I adore both! It took me awhile to get used to them, so I didn't wear them a lot at first. Then I started having more and more problems with my toes getting squeezed in my other dress shoes, so I decided to switch once and for all. I really wish they offered a true navy leather, I'd order them in a heartbeat. I'm a little nervous about wearing them with winter on the way here in Michigan, so I think I may have to splurge on some Phoenix boots here pretty soon. Time will tell how durable they prove to be. I usually spend a lot on my shoes and keep them for many years, so hopefully these will go many years too. (Posted on 9/13/16)
9U Wide fits my feet well (length 27cm / 10.6 in, circumference at ball of foot 25cm / 9.84 in) Review by Bec P
Rating
I hesitated a long time before buying these shoes because of the shipping cost to Australia. I do wish Soft Star had more info about what constitutes "wide" measurement in their adult shoes: simply saying "only get wide if you normally buy wide" doesn't really work for places like Australia where wide shoes aren't typically sold (just a smaller market here, I guess). I ordered wide because I like a bit of room in my shoes, and I'm really glad I did. For reference, my right foot is 25cm / 9.84in measured around the ball of the foot, and 27cm/ 10.6 in long. A 9U Wide Merry Jane fits me well now, two months into wearing. I definitely worried that I had bought the wrong length for the first two weeks, though! The shoes got close to comfortably stretched about a month in.

Now the shoes are stretched, they are really great. I wear them daily for work. Now that I’m confident about sizing and quality, I have ordered some Dashes and RunAmocs, which arrived today and fit much more easily straight out of the box (all 9U wide).

I do notice the design issues that some other posters have mentioned, about the toe box being heavily tapered, and also curved to the inside at the big toe. I’m sure some people’s feet are shaped like this, but mine aren’t! These are the main reasons I give this design 4 stars rather than 5. Especially the toe box issue in a zero-drop shoe. That said, I do still love these shoes and would definitely buy them again. (Posted on 6/24/16)

My husband got them for me since I was looking for minimalist summer shoes in which I can walk a lot. Used the sizing guide, and when I got the shoes they felt tight on my feet. The soft leather really did mold to my feet after the first few times of wearing them. I only go barefoot in them. Can walk around for hours without getting tired feet or even any blisters. Very happy with these shoes! And they look good too. (Posted on 6/7/16)

I love my new Merry Janes. They are so comfortable. I've been wearing 0 drop shoes for several years and these are the best. I'm so glad you make wide women's shoes. I do have a little trouble getting them buckled. I ordered the wrong size but exchanging them was quick and easy.

Man, I love this company. I've been wearing shoes that wanna be these for a long time. I thought I had made good purchases on shoes in the past because I didn't pay much- these shoes are worth the price! So much comfort and a beautiful simple style. For just plain brown shoes I sure have had a lot of compliments! I'm excited to tell everyone about this company! (Posted on 3/25/16)

Hmmm... Review by Exo

I am having a similar observation and experience as reviewers fnancy and Elizabeth, and would like some Elf advice. The width I ordered was regular, and that is my normal. The seam at the heel, in my case, the outer curve of the heel, is laying below my foot and extraordinarily painful, creating a bruise with every step. I am told that adding width does not affect the heel, it only affects the widest part of the foot. What to do? Their is also extra material on the inside on one of the shoes, at the widest part, and not nearly as much on the other, though my feet are 'even' in width (they are very slightly different in length). This extra material not only looks odd but affects my walking, and looks doubly odd given the marked difference in each shoe, making me not recommend SSS to others. There's so much going for the product, otherwise. But the lack of consistency (to a gross extent) and lack of attention to basics (color customization and all is nice but if the shoe hurts, the rest doesn't matter) are things I'd expect SSS to have worked out after 20+ in the business. I'd love to know how to fix the seam issue, Elves. The toe box is also very tight in volume, despite stretching. I think I know now that this is a cost to wearing SSS shoes in whole sizes; if a half size were available, the extra length woud mean that the tapering in volume at the front tip of the toebox would happen just past my toes (esp my big toe) vs *on* my toe. I welcome Elfin ideas to fix this, too, as I want the pair I have to work and want to have future pairs work better. Thank you.

Note from Elves: Dear Exo- this sounds like a possible sizing issue. We are always happy to help! Please contact us so we can address your specific needs. (Posted on 11/30/15)

I now have 4 pairs of Merry Janes, two in summer colors and two in winter. The cut is perfect for me. My feet are a little on the wide side, but also pretty skinny. I almost always wear a Women's 7, and in these, I wear a 6U regular. They're great with socks or without. I can wear these all day at work, walk for three miles during lunch hour, and not need to take them off until it's time for bed. I like these so well, I haven't even bothered to order the Metros. I wear mine 5 days a week, and the wear is barely noticeable. (Posted on 4/23/15)
This is the best shoe I've ever owned. Review by Starr

I have been thinking of buying a pair of Soft Star shoes for about a year. I finally took the plunge a month ago and am extremely happy I did! I've known for some time that conventional shoes harm the feet and body, but until I began wearing these, I didn't realize just how much. I am now able to be on my feet all day and feel great. My back is very happy, and I am not tired as I was after a day in boots or wedges. I'm a Soft Star convert and have no need for my beautiful collection of old shoes -- they are all going to someone who will actually use them! When I am not barefoot, I am wearing my Merry Janes. They get me to work, social occasions, and to the grocery store in chic style. I work in a stylish profession and have received nothing but compliments on my red/lavender pair. One word of warning: if you choose a vegetable dyed leather, do not insert a damp cloth to stretch the leather, as it will create an interesting water stain on the exterior. So I won't do that again...and as is turns out, the leather stretches well on its own! Thank you for making a truly wonderful product. Now I am saving to buy a few more pair;) (Posted on 4/20/15)
Funny Cut Review by Elizabeth

I had the same issue as another reviewer, fnancy. I really wanted to like these shoes, but the shape is strange. Fnancy described it exactly. My feet are healthy and straight and these shoes curve inward in a way that makes me look pigeon toed and I did order the regular width. (Posted on 3/11/15)
I've worn these shoes almost everyday for a year and still my favourite Review by Irish Walk Softly
Rating
I love barefooting and came across soft star through an internet search probably a year or more ago. I was looking for a fashionable shoe I could wear for work that still let me barefoot. I ordered these pewter Merry Jane's (first try of soft star) to try them out. I was nervous buying these online and not knowing if size or fit or comfort would suit (and buying from so far away). Today, I happen to be on the site and saw these reviews. I just wanted to share that I have worn these shoes probably everyday since I bought them (a year/year and a half), sometimes for long walks, even runs, and always for work. I see these reviews about discomfort but I've never had any problems. (I saw the elves commented that incorrect sizing may have been one person's problem.) I also ordered the style with the real buckle (which I never open and slip in and out of) so have no experience of velcro discomfort. I did notice the colour has faded (only noticed about 9 months into ownership), but put it down to the amount of wear I gave them! I then ordered another pair which I keep for 'good' occasions and still find I wear these ones for day wear. 3 months ago (wearing the worn ones) I was complimented in a conference of about 200 people for being noticed as 'the woman in the silver shoes'. One thought: maybe the elves will offer the pewter polish as an accessory so we can brighten up our most favourite shoes? (Posted on 1/8/15)
Okay casual dress shoe. A bit uncomfortable. Review by fnancy
Rating
I bought these shoes because I needed a great casual dress shoe for work. I love the Run-Amoc, but this shoe is cut funny. The bottom of my heels start to hurt mid-day because where the leather meets the sole it folds under the heel and rubs at it. The toe box is also cut funny. it's rounded out into the inside of the foot. The inside of my foot is straight so this is all extra space. The width of my foot is on the outside, but is instead squished into the shoe in the middle. I should have sent it back, but I really wanted it to work. i definitely won't be buying it again. It sure does look cute though. Bummer the cut of the toe box is weird (I ordered a wide width) and that the leather rubs the bottom of my heel funny.

Note from Elves: Hi fnancy! Sorry you did not have a great experience. From your description, it sounds like perhaps a regular width shoe and shape might fit you better in this style. If you change your mind and decide to try the Merry Jane style again, please let us know if we can help you. We would love to hear from you! (Posted on 11/6/14)
Comfortable- not long lasting Review by downsouth

These shoes are wildly comfortable. However, after about a month, the color starts to rub off on TOP of them. Weird, right? Apparently it says somewhere on the website that this happens and these shoes only last a few months, but I was never able to find that. I plan on ordering more, but probably only black. It isn't worth the risk that I'd spend all that money and they'd look awful in just a few months. (Posted on 10/29/14)
Good shoes but not for flat feet Review by Flat feet
Rating
Very pretty shoes. They look very cute. I have flat feet and wear a wide. The construction of the shoe would be great for a person with an arch. It is wide and comfy. If you have flat feet, your "arch" touches the mid section of the shoe and becomes uncomfortable after prolonged wear. (Posted on 4/29/14)

I love these shoes. I wish I could wear them year round. They are beautiful and receive lots of positive comments, but I enjoy wearing them so much because I can feel the ground as I am walking and this makes my legs and feet so happy. I could walk for miles in them. Seriously. I am going to replace all of my shoes with Soft Stars. (Posted on 4/4/14)
Perfect indoor shoes for school! Review by Jen

I bought these last year for my daughter - she has to wear flat black shoes in school. She has really narrow feet and it's been hard to find an "allowable" shoe that fits. I ordered these for her in narrow and she loves them. I'm back this year to order the next size up! (Posted on 9/1/13)
Best Option Review by Anna
Rating
I believe your mary janes are the best option for women that want to wear comfortable minimalist shoes that are still pretty and feminine and dressy enough for any occasion. I love the quality of the construction, the materials and that they come in colors other than black and brown!

When I wear fivefingers I get tons of "are they comfortable?" but when I wear soft star shoes I get "where can I get those?"

For sizing- I've tried the 7 wide, the 8 regular, and the 8 wide. According tot he chart I'm in between the 7 and 8. Both the 7 wide and the 8 wide fit me great and are very comfortable and by a hair I prefer the 8 wide so I'm sticking with that in the future. I have both and wear both.

For the width, I do need the wide but not because of the width of my feet. Rather, it's the shape. The Mary Janes in wide are shaped slightly differently than the regular in that the big toe areas are more straight in the wide vs. more curvy in the regular. I have very straight big toes (basically helthy big toes with no hint of bunions) so in the regular mary jane there's extra space in the big toe area, which creates an obvious wrinkle.

The mary janes in wide fit my foot shape a lot better so although they're technically bigger they look smaller. It seems backwards but that's the best way I have of explaining it. (Posted on 4/19/13)
great choice for a casual shoe, not a fan of the velcro Review by scedastic
Rating
The shoes are cute, flexible, lightweight and comfortable for walking, and as ever, wonderfully wide in the toebox. They've even performed well on a few impromptu half mile or so runs with the kids.
The only problem I have is with the velcro closure; it's far to the side and towards the back/heel of the shoe. It comes apart a bit too easily unless it's tightly mated, then there is a leftover bit of leather strap hanging on the ground. If that gets snagged, or brushes against something the wrong way, the velcro detaches.
If the velcro strap were not as close to the side/ground, I don't think this would happen. My daughter has a pair of these for kids, and she rarely wears them because of this issue. Not sure if anyone else encountered this?
I still wear them several times per week, but would definitely buy another pair with a different clasp design/location if that existed. (Posted on 1/17/13)
Shoe-Love! Review by Jessie

I bought these after I began running in the Dash RunAmocs and realized that my feet were changing shape, getting stronger, and all my "conventional" shoes became less comfortable.

I needed something appropriate for work and these fit the bill! Attractive (I get complements all the time from patients), completely cozy (I stand and walk all day on concrete covered in carpet), and versatile (I wear them in summers without socks and I wear wool knee-highs under them in winter). I fit a "regular" and can wear woolies under them without them getting too snug.

Once, when hiking in British Columbia, I twisted my ankle in my hiking boots and couldn't stand the pressure of my boots on my ankle. I'd packed my MerryJanes as camp shoes and wore them the rest of the steep hike down. They held up surprisingly well while I scrambled down a scree/talus field and descended the trail. Impressive durability!

I am ordering another pair in brown. My feet are IN LOVE with these shoes. (Posted on 10/29/12)

Ordered these after killing my toes in my first Half Marathon. Suffered from purple-friction-toenails, but even worse, my great toe actually became infected. I couldn't stand to have anything touching that toe, yet needed something quasi-professional for work. These are perfect! Three weeks of wearing almost constantly and I am hooked. I am overweight and formerly suffered from plantar fasciitis. Although the plantar fasciitis healed after I discovered Dansko clogs, I was a little nervous about the lack of "arch support" in these shoes. No problems so far! My roommate accused me of wearing "penguin" shoes, but I like to be different so I don't care! I will continue to wear these until they fall apart. Since it hasn't been very long, I will update this review if anything changes. But I am in love with these shoes, so much so that I just ordered the Limited Edition Breast Cancer Viley's for slippers and Moc3's for treadmill. Can't wait for them to arrive! (Posted on 10/5/12)
ADORE this shoe! Review by Kelly
Rating
I really like the Merry Jane. These are my first SSS's and I just ordered a pair of ramblers. I needed a wide. I found that I could not wear the regular with socks w/o a really tight fit and I didn't feel that I had enough room for total "toe freedom" so I exchanged for the wide and I'm glad I did. I don't normally wear a wide so this surprised me, but I'm new to minimalist shoes and realize that my toes haven't had the freedom I should give them. Because the wide's have a looser fit, I can wear them with socks and I get some air flow in them, so my feet stayed cool. They stay on perfectly and I truly have that barefoot feel in them. My toes don't do any work to keep the shoe on. I have worn these while doing a great deal of walking and haven't had any blisters or discomfort whatsoever. I like that there is option for a dressier shoe for skirts or dresses. With the current weather (early fall), they are perfect for capri pants. I have put a custom red pair with a flower applique on my Christmas list from my husband! I am battling some dye transfer onto my feet, but this is noted in SSS's FAQ's and it is lessening each time I wear them. I have the velcro closure and so far, its worked perfectly! I like the fact that I can quickly adjust them if my feet swell up a bit during the heat of the day. I definitely recommend these and hope to add more to my shoe wardrobe soon! (Posted on 10/1/12)

Unsure about your size? Our printable guide will help you find the best fit for your feet! Just click the button below to print the guide and follow the instructions on the page (if you don't have access to a printer then scroll down for another option).

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots, Portlanders and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
