Perfect for work! Review by AnnMarie
The Merry Jane was the only minimal shoe I could find that was appropriate for my workplace's dress code. I've gotten so many compliments on them from coworkers wearing "normal shoes" -- and I've been happy to brag about how I can stand all day to teach and never have sore feet, knees, or hips!

Things I love:
They are so comfortable! I was a little worried about sizing down a size from my regular size (as is the recommendation), and they were a tinch tight when I first started wearing them, but leather does stretch. After a few wears, they stretched out and they're nice and roomy now (maybe even too roomy)?
As I mentioned above, they're also adorable.
The whisky color works well with black, grey, and brown outfits, too. I wear them with pants and skirts alike, too.
I like the patina of wear they're acquiring as I walk back and forth from work to campus.

Things I would change:
I am prone to sweaty feet, and the cut of the shoes is such that wearing a socklet looks weird (especially on the inside edge of the shoe). I probably should have shelled out the extra money for the sheepskin liners, but I've never had them before and was worried they would make my feet even more sweaty.
I love the look of the buckle, but I can't deny it makes getting my shoes on and off a little more difficult. (And I am lazy.) I eventually buckled the strap on the first hole to make it easier to slip them on and off, which works pretty well. I would like to have either Velcro on the strap with a false buckle, or better yet, an elastic strap with a false buckle. On the other hand, the buckle makes it hard to sit cross-legged, which I often do.
I wish the color was a little more of a cognac than a whisky (i.e., a little more orange undertones), which would make them match better with black-based outfits.
Some other reviewers mentioned the shape of the toe box. I don't totally agree, but I do think that widest part of the toe box is a little too low, making it curve out below the ball of my foot. This is possibly what they were referring to when they said it made them look "pigeon-toed". It took me a while to get used to that when I looked down at my feet, but I hardly notice it now. And perhaps it's because I should have gone down yet another size and chosen the wider toebox, instead. This is my first pair of Merry Janes, though, so perhaps I'll try that next time.

Overall, a great shoe! It has a few quirks, but I they're comfortable and cute. I wish they were a bit cheaper, but if they last as long as I'm hoping (I'm a graduate student and school isn't cheap!), I'm happy to spend my money supporting local craftsmanship and sustainable goods! I love my custom merry janes! I would love to see/buy more options for casual work shoes. (Posted on 2/2/18)
Great customer service and even better shoes! Review by Megan
I ordered the wrong size and they made exchanges very easy. I ended up opting for the narrow, which I don't normally order, and they fit much better. They are made so well and feel like butter on my feet. It honestly feels like I'm in slippers. I will definitely be ordering again - I am in love! (Posted on 1/10/18)
So comfy! Review by Kendra
These shoes are fantastic. I'm just getting into the barefoot shoe movement, and these have been amazing. I wear them to work as often as possible, and I get complements on them everyday. It should also be mentioned that I am in my 30's, and I get complements from women of all ages on these shoes. Word of advice - use the measurement guide before purchasing your shoes. I found out that I needed a larger size than I typically wear. Looking forward to getting another pair some day in a different color! (Posted on 12/24/17)

Best shoes ever! Thanks Softstar Elves! (Posted on 12/19/17)
Wonderful except for one thing.... Review by Kay
These shoes are wonderful for all the reasons everyone gives: they are immensely comfortable (feel like no shoes at all) and are well-constructed and nice to look at. The one problem they have ( I have two pair) is that tiny pebbles, twigs, tiny pieces of leaves etc get into them when you walk outside. This means I'm frequently having to stop, unstrap them and shake them out. It's annoying and should be unnecessary. Once they fix this, these shoes will be perfect! (Posted on 11/21/17)
Comfortable and Cute Review by Danielle
I'm a teacher and bought these as my "back to school" shoes this year and am so happy with my purchase. Based on the size chart I ordered a size larger than I really needed, but Soft Star made the exchange quick and painless. I LOVE these with dresses and tights for fall, and I get tons of compliments on them. (Posted on 10/27/17)
Lovely shoes Review by Ana
I really like these shoes. They are very comfortable and super cute. I would love to see the option of getting these made as grounding shoes, but I contacted via email and was told they aren't available this way. Maybe in the future, hopefully???? Please! Pretty please! (Posted on 10/21/17)

I am still in love with mine! Review by Bee
I've been wearing my shoes since day one! It seems they walk me: I can't stop walking around as it feels so natural. The only thing was that I had a blister on my small toe as I put in the lamb sole to see how that feels. But all is well now and I would buy another pair any time. Many thanks for producing such quality! Life is different when shoes are accommodating our needs for proper walking! (Posted on 9/14/17)
Second pair Review by Lisa
Wonderful comfy shoe, although I do agree it looks oddly shaped and has a pigeon toed appearance due to the curvature. However, they fit my feet and are comfortable. To the person who had a problem with color wear--the shoes are leather, on my last pair I found old fashioned leather shoe polish did the trick and had them looking like new again! NOTE: I do make an adjustment to mine (both pairs) as they are leather this is easy to do and causes no problem with the shoe. I don't like the strap so I simply cut it off keeping the curvature of the shape and remove the buckles--tada! Slip on shoes-- my fav. :) (Posted on 9/1/17)
stylish, retro and comfy Review by Karin - Little Shop around the Corner
I've owned Merry Janes before and sold them, but missed them. When I saw the Aged Whiskey version on social media I knew I had fallen in love with this pair of shoes. I love the kind of retro look of the colour and design. They go great under frocks, as well as a pare of jeans. I chose a wider fit for my broad feet and my shoes are very comfy barefoot or with a pair of socks in it. I know some people laugh at my style of dressing, but then again, I've always been that weird girl :-) (Posted on 8/15/17)
Love on first sight! Review by Bee
I got my shoes yesterday, it's a gift my daughter brought back from her business trip to the US and I cannot really put into words how beautiful the shoes look, just as I pictured them when I first saw them online. I am delighted with the fit: I measured and was hat the end of 5U, so I ordered 6U to make sure they will fit well when I put in the lamb sole. And they fit really good. I am grateful for all the other reviews as it gave me a good idea about potential issues. My feet are a bit on the wider side so I was sure I would be ok with my size. I will certainly come back to report how it feels when I ware them for a longer time. Thank you Elves for your wonderful work! ;-) (Posted on 8/13/17)
Great Shoes! Review by Meg
These shoes are great. I had started having trouble with other shoes with my toes squishing together to the point that my little toenail was lacerating the 4th toe. These shoes are made so that thye foot width is accounted for, while still maintaining a pleasant, stylish look. My toes have room to spread apart, and my feet in general feel much better. There was no "adjustment period" - the shoes were instantly comfortable. As a nurse, I am on my feet all day, and these shoes make my feet feel so much better.

Thank you very much for a great shoe! (Posted on 8/3/17)
Perfect in every way! Review by Nicole

My new favorite shoes! Review by Marjorie
I've been hiking and walking in minimal shoes for about a year, and decided to fully transition to minimal footwear. These are my first pair of Soft Stars, and they are my favorite shoes! I bought them mainly for work -- I'm a teacher, and on my feet most of the day -- but I wear them all the time. These shoes are soft, comfortable, and still look professional. The leather is beautiful and the craftsmanship that went into these shoes is excellent. I'm planning to buy another pair of Soft Stars for colder temperatures! (Posted on 7/28/17)
These shoes ROCK Review by Amy
I love these shoes so much, I bought a second pair. In fact, my feet are completely spoiled now and are rebelling against conventional summer sandals. I get questions and complements about them all the time. So cute and comfy! (Posted on 7/7/17)
We all love these shoes!!! Review by Julie
I bought these shoes for my daughter in law so that she could match with the shoes I bought for my granddaughter. She loves them so much. She wears them everyday and says that her feet feel great even when she is standing all day long. She loves them so much that I am going to order a pair for me. Thank you for making these beautiful handmade shoes for us all to enjoy. (Posted on 6/15/17)
I love these shoes! Review by Heather
These are such comfortable, beautiful shoes! Having slender feet, the shoes are a bit floppy and loose around the sides/toes. I probably would have liked to have narrow, but have never purchased narrow so wouldn't have known to do so. (Posted on 6/13/17)
Quite pleasing Review by Elisabethe
I have fallen madly for these shoes. They allow me to be barefoot, whilst my foot is protected. I wore them all weekend during a historic recreation event, camping. I walked over all sorts of surfaces - rocky, slippery grass, steep hills, dirt - and had no issues with traction, twisted feet, or anything else terrible. By the end of the weekend, my feet were no more tired than the rest of me! Actually, they probably were better! (Posted on 6/5/17)
Not enough choice in colour Review by Janke
Would so much like to order this shoe in dark brown again.

Barefoot+ Review by MB
My job has me on my feet all day, and although I'd rather be barefoot all day, work insists I wear shoes. :-) These Merry Janes are the perfect compromise. I feel like I'm barefoot while I look like I'm wearing shoes. These are WAY more comfortable than the other ballet flats I've worn. Lots of room to spread out my toes, great ground feel, and so much comfort for being on my feet 10-12 hours at a time. (Posted on 4/27/17)
A MIRACLE Review by Melissa K.
I have been in the food and beverage industry for 29 years. I can not explain the pain I have experienced in all these years for wearing the wrong shoe. As humans we are not supposed to wear shoes. This is not a shoe. It is protection for your feet... Nothing more nothing less. I have been wearing them at work for 2 weeks now and NO pain! Not just no feet pain... No ankle pain, no leg pain, no back pain. I have a 1.5 hour commute to work each way and after a shift by the time i got home i was in such pain it took me a while to get from my car to the front door... Now i just jump out and walk in. I sincerely thank Softstar shoes for bringing back quality of life and i also gained quality of life at work as well... You just gained a lifelong customer. I can not express my thankfulness enough!!!! (Posted on 4/8/17)
Love them!! Review by Patricia

1st toe problems Review by Diana
I ordered a 6U wide because I am wide - in the toes. I usually wear a 36 regular in Birkenstocks, sometimes a 37. Because of the tapering in the Merry toe box, I have sadly had to return them. The elves tell me they are working on a new sole which will allow 1st toe freaks to dance in their shoes. Can't hardly wait. I'm such a huge fan of zero drop shoes! It's helping me resolve years of foot problems. I honestly thought someone would have to pry my cold dead feet out designer shoes, but that's not the case when it comes to health and comfort. When they do come out with this new sole, they should keep the old one, just in case someone has bunions.

Where do I apply to be a foot model? (Posted on 12/7/16)
Great shoes Review by Katie
These shoes are super comfortable. I have wide feet and the wide width on these are perfect. I bought them in black as well because I enjoy them so much. Can't wait to add other colors soon. (Posted on 11/9/16)
Very very painful Review by krixtar
These shoes were horribly painful for me to wear at first. Even after a few months of having them, if I don't wear them for a while, I will notice they hurt again when I wear them. The toe box is sooooo tight that it presses on my toe nails, painfully. The first time I wore them, my toe nails were so bruised for days I couldn't wear anything except sandals. After I 'broke them in', they hurt a lot less, but even now when I put them on, they are so tight over my nails that they are painful to wear. Plus the colour is coming off the outside, they scuff super easily. I'd return them if I could but they're very worn and I've had them for a while. If it weren't for that, I'd rate them very high because they're so comfortable for walking in (in terms of other foot pain). I had no idea shoes could even hurt the top of my foot so much until I had these. The bottom is better though :P

Note from Elves: Dear Krixtar - It sounds like this is possibly a sizing issue. Please forward your review to us via email along with this response so we can help get you into a proper fit. The "Aged" leathers do scuff easily and are tanned to show scratches as they are a "distressed" leather. (Posted on 11/6/16)
LOVE my MJ's! Review by Melissa
I have two pairs of these fabulous shoes, one in chocolate that I bought at an end of year sale at a discount, and one in black with flower cutouts that I designed myself. I adore both! It took me awhile to get used to them, so I didn't wear them a lot at first. Then I started having more and more problems with my toes getting squeezed in my other dress shoes, so I decided to switch once and for all. I really wish they offered a true navy leather, I'd order them in a heartbeat. I'm a little nervous about wearing them with winter on the way here in Michigan, so I think I may have to splurge on some Phoenix boots here pretty soon. Time will tell how durable they prove to be. I usually spend a lot on my shoes and keep them for many years, so hopefully these will go many years too. (Posted on 9/13/16)
9U Wide fits my feet well (length 27cm / 10.6 in, circumference at ball of foot 25cm / 9.84 in) Review by Bec P
I hesitated a long time before buying these shoes because of the shipping cost to Australia. I do wish Soft Star had more info about what constitutes "wide" measurement in their adult shoes: simply saying "only get wide if you normally buy wide" doesn't really work for places like Australia where wide shoes aren't typically sold (just a smaller market here, I guess). I ordered wide because I like a bit of room in my shoes, and I'm really glad I did. For reference, my right foot is 25cm / 9.84in measured around the ball of the foot, and 27cm/ 10.6 in long. A 9U Wide Merry Jane fits me well now, two months into wearing. I definitely worried that I had bought the wrong length for the first two weeks, though! The shoes got close to comfortably stretched about a month in.

Now the shoes are stretched, they are really great. I wear them daily for work. Now that I’m confident about sizing and quality, I have ordered some Dashes and RunAmocs, which arrived today and fit much more easily straight out of the box (all 9U wide).

I do notice the design issues that some other posters have mentioned, about the toe box being heavily tapered, and also curved to the inside at the big toe. I’m sure some people’s feet are shaped like this, but mine aren’t! These are the main reasons I give this design 4 stars rather than 5. Especially the toe box issue in a zero-drop shoe. That said, I do still love these shoes and would definitely buy them again. (Posted on 6/24/16)
Super comfy! Review by Simone
My husband got them for me since I was looking for minimalist summer shoes in which I can walk a lot. Used the sizing guide, and when I got the shoes they felt tight on my feet. The soft leather really did mold to my feet after the first few times of wearing them. I only go barefoot in them. Can walk around for hours without getting tired feet or even any blisters. Very happy with these shoes! And they look good too. (Posted on 6/7/16)
Love them Review by Ann
I love my new Merry Janes. They are so comfortable. I've been wearing 0 drop shoes for several years and these are the best. I'm so glad you make wide women's shoes. I do have a little trouble getting them buckled. I ordered the wrong size but exchanging them was quick and easy.

Why didn't I get these sooner? Review by Amanda
Man, I love this company. I've been wearing shoes that wanna be these for a long time. I thought I had made good purchases on shoes in the past because I didn't pay much- these shoes are worth the price! So much comfort and a beautiful simple style. For just plain brown shoes I sure have had a lot of compliments! I'm excited to tell everyone about this company! (Posted on 3/25/16)

These shoes are amazing! Review by J. Rivkah
I love these shoes! They are the comfort you expect from Soft Stars, but the classiness that allows for everything from casual to formalwear. Why didn't I invest in these sooner?!

Sizing charts at Soft Star were spot on. (Posted on 1/4/16)
Hmmm... Review by Exo
I am having a similar observation and experience as reviewers fnancy and Elizabeth, and would like some Elf advice. The width I ordered was regular, and that is my normal. The seam at the heel, in my case, the outer curve of the heel, is laying below my foot and extraordinarily painful, creating a bruise with every step. I am told that adding width does not affect the heel, it only affects the widest part of the foot. What to do? Their is also extra material on the inside on one of the shoes, at the widest part, and not nearly as much on the other, though my feet are 'even' in width (they are very slightly different in length). This extra material not only looks odd but affects my walking, and looks doubly odd given the marked difference in each shoe, making me not recommend SSS to others. There's so much going for the product, otherwise. But the lack of consistency (to a gross extent) and lack of attention to basics (color customization and all is nice but if the shoe hurts, the rest doesn't matter) are things I'd expect SSS to have worked out after 20+ in the business. I'd love to know how to fix the seam issue, Elves. The toe box is also very tight in volume, despite stretching. I think I know now that this is a cost to wearing SSS shoes in whole sizes; if a half size were available, the extra length woud mean that the tapering in volume at the front tip of the toebox would happen just past my toes (esp my big toe) vs *on* my toe. I welcome Elfin ideas to fix this, too, as I want the pair I have to work and want to have future pairs work better. Thank you.

Note from Elves: Dear Exo- this sounds like a possible sizing issue. We are always happy to help! Please contact us so we can address your specific needs. (Posted on 11/30/15)
Super Comfortable Review by Elizabeth
I now have 4 pairs of Merry Janes, two in summer colors and two in winter. The cut is perfect for me. My feet are a little on the wide side, but also pretty skinny. I almost always wear a Women's 7, and in these, I wear a 6U regular. They're great with socks or without. I can wear these all day at work, walk for three miles during lunch hour, and not need to take them off until it's time for bed. I like these so well, I haven't even bothered to order the Metros. I wear mine 5 days a week, and the wear is barely noticeable. (Posted on 4/23/15)
This is the best shoe I've ever owned. Review by Starr
I have been thinking of buying a pair of Soft Star shoes for about a year. I finally took the plunge a month ago and am extremely happy I did! I've known for some time that conventional shoes harm the feet and body, but until I began wearing these, I didn't realize just how much. I am now able to be on my feet all day and feel great. My back is very happy, and I am not tired as I was after a day in boots or wedges. I'm a Soft Star convert and have no need for my beautiful collection of old shoes -- they are all going to someone who will actually use them! When I am not barefoot, I am wearing my Merry Janes. They get me to work, social occasions, and to the grocery store in chic style. I work in a stylish profession and have received nothing but compliments on my red/lavender pair. One word of warning: if you choose a vegetable dyed leather, do not insert a damp cloth to stretch the leather, as it will create an interesting water stain on the exterior. So I won't do that again...and as is turns out, the leather stretches well on its own! Thank you for making a truly wonderful product. Now I am saving to buy a few more pair;) (Posted on 4/20/15)
Funny Cut Review by Elizabeth
I had the same issue as another reviewer, fnancy. I really wanted to like these shoes, but the shape is strange. Fnancy described it exactly. My feet are healthy and straight and these shoes curve inward in a way that makes me look pigeon toed and I did order the regular width. (Posted on 3/11/15)
I've worn these shoes almost everyday for a year and still my favourite Review by Irish Walk Softly
I love barefooting and came across soft star through an internet search probably a year or more ago. I was looking for a fashionable shoe I could wear for work that still let me barefoot. I ordered these pewter Merry Jane's (first try of soft star) to try them out. I was nervous buying these online and not knowing if size or fit or comfort would suit (and buying from so far away). Today, I happen to be on the site and saw these reviews. I just wanted to share that I have worn these shoes probably everyday since I bought them (a year/year and a half), sometimes for long walks, even runs, and always for work. I see these reviews about discomfort but I've never had any problems. (I saw the elves commented that incorrect sizing may have been one person's problem.) I also ordered the style with the real buckle (which I never open and slip in and out of) so have no experience of velcro discomfort. I did notice the colour has faded (only noticed about 9 months into ownership), but put it down to the amount of wear I gave them! I then ordered another pair which I keep for 'good' occasions and still find I wear these ones for day wear. 3 months ago (wearing the worn ones) I was complimented in a conference of about 200 people for being noticed as 'the woman in the silver shoes'. One thought: maybe the elves will offer the pewter polish as an accessory so we can brighten up our most favourite shoes? (Posted on 1/8/15)
Okay casual dress shoe. A bit uncomfortable. Review by fnancy
I bought these shoes because I needed a great casual dress shoe for work. I love the Run-Amoc, but this shoe is cut funny. The bottom of my heels start to hurt mid-day because where the leather meets the sole it folds under the heel and rubs at it. The toe box is also cut funny. it's rounded out into the inside of the foot. The inside of my foot is straight so this is all extra space. The width of my foot is on the outside, but is instead squished into the shoe in the middle. I should have sent it back, but I really wanted it to work. i definitely won't be buying it again. It sure does look cute though. Bummer the cut of the toe box is weird (I ordered a wide width) and that the leather rubs the bottom of my heel funny.

Note from Elves: Hi fnancy! Sorry you did not have a great experience. From your description, it sounds like perhaps a regular width shoe and shape might fit you better in this style. If you change your mind and decide to try the Merry Jane style again, please let us know if we can help you. We would love to hear from you! (Posted on 11/6/14)
Comfortable- not long lasting Review by downsouth
These shoes are wildly comfortable. However, after about a month, the color starts to rub off on TOP of them. Weird, right? Apparently it says somewhere on the website that this happens and these shoes only last a few months, but I was never able to find that. I plan on ordering more, but probably only black. It isn't worth the risk that I'd spend all that money and they'd look awful in just a few months. (Posted on 10/29/14)
Good shoes but not for flat feet Review by Flat feet
Very pretty shoes. They look very cute. I have flat feet and wear a wide. The construction of the shoe would be great for a person with an arch. It is wide and comfy. If you have flat feet, your "arch" touches the mid section of the shoe and becomes uncomfortable after prolonged wear. (Posted on 4/29/14)
Most Comfortable Shoes I own. Review by Elizabeth
I love these shoes. I wish I could wear them year round. They are beautiful and receive lots of positive comments, but I enjoy wearing them so much because I can feel the ground as I am walking and this makes my legs and feet so happy. I could walk for miles in them. Seriously. I am going to replace all of my shoes with Soft Stars. (Posted on 4/4/14)
Perfect indoor shoes for school! Review by Jen
I bought these last year for my daughter - she has to wear flat black shoes in school. She has really narrow feet and it's been hard to find an "allowable" shoe that fits. I ordered these for her in narrow and she loves them. I'm back this year to order the next size up! (Posted on 9/1/13)
Best Option Review by Anna
I believe your mary janes are the best option for women that want to wear comfortable minimalist shoes that are still pretty and feminine and dressy enough for any occasion. I love the quality of the construction, the materials and that they come in colors other than black and brown!

When I wear fivefingers I get tons of "are they comfortable?" but when I wear soft star shoes I get "where can I get those?"

For sizing- I've tried the 7 wide, the 8 regular, and the 8 wide. According tot he chart I'm in between the 7 and 8. Both the 7 wide and the 8 wide fit me great and are very comfortable and by a hair I prefer the 8 wide so I'm sticking with that in the future. I have both and wear both.

For the width, I do need the wide but not because of the width of my feet. Rather, it's the shape. The Mary Janes in wide are shaped slightly differently than the regular in that the big toe areas are more straight in the wide vs. more curvy in the regular. I have very straight big toes (basically helthy big toes with no hint of bunions) so in the regular mary jane there's extra space in the big toe area, which creates an obvious wrinkle.

The mary janes in wide fit my foot shape a lot better so although they're technically bigger they look smaller. It seems backwards but that's the best way I have of explaining it. (Posted on 4/19/13)
great choice for a casual shoe, not a fan of the velcro Review by scedastic
The shoes are cute, flexible, lightweight and comfortable for walking, and as ever, wonderfully wide in the toebox. They've even performed well on a few impromptu half mile or so runs with the kids.
The only problem I have is with the velcro closure; it's far to the side and towards the back/heel of the shoe. It comes apart a bit too easily unless it's tightly mated, then there is a leftover bit of leather strap hanging on the ground. If that gets snagged, or brushes against something the wrong way, the velcro detaches.
If the velcro strap were not as close to the side/ground, I don't think this would happen. My daughter has a pair of these for kids, and she rarely wears them because of this issue. Not sure if anyone else encountered this?
I still wear them several times per week, but would definitely buy another pair with a different clasp design/location if that existed. (Posted on 1/17/13)
Shoe-Love! Review by Jessie
I bought these after I began running in the Dash RunAmocs and realized that my feet were changing shape, getting stronger, and all my "conventional" shoes became less comfortable.

I needed something appropriate for work and these fit the bill! Attractive (I get complements all the time from patients), completely cozy (I stand and walk all day on concrete covered in carpet), and versatile (I wear them in summers without socks and I wear wool knee-highs under them in winter). I fit a "regular" and can wear woolies under them without them getting too snug.

Once, when hiking in British Columbia, I twisted my ankle in my hiking boots and couldn't stand the pressure of my boots on my ankle. I'd packed my MerryJanes as camp shoes and wore them the rest of the steep hike down. They held up surprisingly well while I scrambled down a scree/talus field and descended the trail. Impressive durability!

I am ordering another pair in brown. My feet are IN LOVE with these shoes. (Posted on 10/29/12)

Ordered these after killing my toes in my first Half Marathon. Suffered from purple-friction-toenails, but even worse, my great toe actually became infected. I couldn't stand to have anything touching that toe, yet needed something quasi-professional for work. These are perfect! Three weeks of wearing almost constantly and I am hooked. I am overweight and formerly suffered from plantar fasciitis. Although the plantar fasciitis healed after I discovered Dansko clogs, I was a little nervous about the lack of "arch support" in these shoes. No problems so far! My roommate accused me of wearing "penguin" shoes, but I like to be different so I don't care! I will continue to wear these until they fall apart. Since it hasn't been very long, I will update this review if anything changes. But I am in love with these shoes, so much so that I just ordered the Limited Edition Breast Cancer Viley's for slippers and Moc3's for treadmill. Can't wait for them to arrive! (Posted on 10/5/12)
ADORE this shoe! Review by Kelly
I really like the Merry Jane. These are my first SSS's and I just ordered a pair of ramblers. I needed a wide. I found that I could not wear the regular with socks w/o a really tight fit and I didn't feel that I had enough room for total "toe freedom" so I exchanged for the wide and I'm glad I did. I don't normally wear a wide so this surprised me, but I'm new to minimalist shoes and realize that my toes haven't had the freedom I should give them. Because the wide's have a looser fit, I can wear them with socks and I get some air flow in them, so my feet stayed cool. They stay on perfectly and I truly have that barefoot feel in them. My toes don't do any work to keep the shoe on. I have worn these while doing a great deal of walking and haven't had any blisters or discomfort whatsoever. I like that there is option for a dressier shoe for skirts or dresses. With the current weather (early fall), they are perfect for capri pants. I have put a custom red pair with a flower applique on my Christmas list from my husband! I am battling some dye transfer onto my feet, but this is noted in SSS's FAQ's and it is lessening each time I wear them. I have the velcro closure and so far, its worked perfectly! I like the fact that I can quickly adjust them if my feet swell up a bit during the heat of the day. I definitely recommend these and hope to add more to my shoe wardrobe soon! (Posted on 10/1/12)
Great for work! Review by Marcia
This shoe is not only comfortable, it's style makes it wearable at my job with business casual dress. I finally can wear healthy shoes at my workplace. I would love to see more styles developed that suit this purpose. (Posted on 7/4/12)

Find Your Size!

You can measure your feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method then you may want to try our printable size guide. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
