Playful Pancakes are catnip-filled toys for your feline friends—inspired by our friend Cassidy. For each toy purchased, Softstar Shoes donates 100% of the proceeds to Kids For Kids, an organization that combats hunger in Darfur, Sudan. Grab a few leather cat toys with catnip for you and your kitty friends and help provide kids in Sudan with nourishing goat (kid) milk at the same time.

Playful Pancakes leather and sheepskin cat toys with catnip are now made by the elves from sheepskin and leather scraps. The body is 3 inches (8cm) long with a leather tail that ranges from 8 to 12 inches. Yummy catnip pellets are sandwiched between the sheepskin and perforated leather. We have thoroughly tested these toys on our own kitties and they passed inspection with flying colors! Labor and shipping are donated by the elves. Pancake cat toys were created in 2006 by then-7-year-old Cassidy Lynn as a fundraising project. She learned about starvation in Darfur and wanted to do something about it, so she brainstormed the idea of making cat toys and donating proceeds to Kids for Kids—an organization that assists families in Sudan. They combat hunger through the purchase of goats (aka "kids") which provide sustainable milk supplies for their children (aka kids"). You can check out their website or Facebook page for more information. Cassidy came by our workshop regularly for leather and sheepskin scraps. She recruited elementary school friends to make personalized toys they could sell at local events. Cassidy and her friends made hundreds of toys and purchased over 180 goats in the first 2 years. When Cassidy's mom, Kathy, was diagnosed with terminal cancer early in 2008 the pancake project took a break. In November 2011, the Elves partnered with Cassidy to reinvigorate her Playful Pancake project.

    I have a 19 year old kitty who still likes to play occasionally. I put this down near her favorite spot and she started batting at it and pouncing - more than she's done with any other toy for years! And unlike other toys where she loses interest, she must really like the texture of the leather and fleece because she keeps playing with it whether I'm actively dragging it around or not. Thank you for using scraps in this way!

    My cats enjoy playing with these toys, they are durable and have held up to a month of play without damage. The two leather strings are a nice feature and make it so you can play with the toy in different ways. I also like that they are repurposing waste material and money goes to charity!

    I wanted to leave some positive feedback about the cat toys. Our family has been looking after a stray cat for the last year. We think his owners abandoned him sometime ago, and he’s been fending for himself ever since. We’ve spent the last year rehabbing him and building trust with him, and things are looking up. He’s still a very nervous and anxious boy, though, and my guess is these cat toys are probably the first toys he’s seen in years. When they arrived, I tried to play with him and he was completely alarmed at first. But then, when I left one of the toys near him, he went into fits of rolling and jumping with it for 30 minutes on end. Now we’ve established a daily playtime with him, and he is so happy every time your cat toys come out, comes out of his shell completely :) so, I wanted to say thank you - you’ve made one cat and his family very happy!!!

    I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t smell the catnip, but my 2 boys could! They rubbed themselves on it and played with it together. It still moves around the house (one month later) so I know they are still enjoying it. :)

    Oli really loves this toy! He tosses it up; he bats it under the dresser and then fishes it out again. It's really fun to see him play with it. I did trim the fleece a bit around the edges because the first time he picked it up in his mouth, he made a funny face and stuck his tongue in and out like something was stuck on it. Now it's great!
