Great shoes for everyday Review by morri
These sandals are great, they hold up well to the demands of outdoor playschool, even the flower is still in one piece. Also great that the shoes are easy on/off for nearly 4 yo. (Posted on 8/29/16)
Favorite sandals Review by Suzana
These sandals are a staple! If I could give them a higher star rating, I would. These will forever be a staple item in my daughter's closet: she wears them almost every day. My active 16 month old has learned to walk, climb, run in these sandals on just about every surface.
I also recommended them to a friend whose daughter disliked shoes: that changed with these sandals.
They are sturdy enough to hold up to any surface and active toddlers. They are soft enough to allow for natural foot development and good proprioception. They are comfortable and protective.
The open toe also means that they will fit longer than most shoes will.
As other reviewers said, I too will be buying them each summer. (Posted on 7/6/16)
Great for wide baby feet! Review by Cithchic
My son has been large and off the grow charts since he was born. Clothes and shoes continue to be challenging but these sandals have made it easier! They are very comfortable and leave no wear marks on my sons feet. I bought a pair for everyone in the family! (Posted on 4/20/16)
Highly Recommended Review by Acadian Four
These are great, comfortable shoes for my 2 year old. He has very hard to fit feet and they worked with me to make sure they fit. Highly recommend the shoes and the company! (Posted on 11/1/15)
Most Favorite Sandals!! Review by Owl Moon
We love these sandals! The Velcro strap allows for a good fit around my child's ankle and the sole allows enough grip for him to climb safely at the playground. It's the only pair of sandals we buy for the summer and we love that they match both dressy clothes and everyday clothes. (Posted on 10/14/15)
My 11-month old has gotten so many compliments Review by SN
I ordered a pair for my 11-month's son - his first summer shoes - and we got so many compliments at the daycare, on the subway/bus, etc. The leather stretched just right to fit his feet. I will order again next summer! (Posted on 8/31/15)
Great Sandals Review by Melissa
After we received our Soft Star Classics and loved them, I bought these for summer. My son loves them. For the first time, when given the option to go barefoot he asked to have his shoes on! I love that these are good for his feet and made in the USA. Will be buying again when he outgrows these. (Posted on 5/10/14)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

We do our best to get the most accurate leather color swatch photographs possible, but not all screens will show colors the same way. A customer once suggested we tell people what Crayola™ color crayon our leathers most closely match and we thought it was a fantastic idea! Below you will find the Soft Star colors and the corresponding Crayola™ Crayon names.

We're also happy to offer coloring sheets for our popular kids' styles, so your children can design their own shoes at home!

Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes

Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
