I once tried flats made by Vivobarefoot that never stretched so was thrilled when, as suggested, ordered 1 size up, and felt my feet in heaven from the first step. I only wish they made a metallic purple or metallic gun metal color.
Note from the Elves: Thanks Flats for the great review! Check out the custom colors, especially shiny pewter... it might be the gun metal color you are looking for! (Posted on 11/16/17)
I stalked these shoes online for months! Years maybe. So glad I finally got down to ordering them. The sizing process is well explained. I chose to have room for my toes to move about. I have not regretted that and the shoes have not become too loose (I believe I have had them for 4 months now). I wrote in a request for a different heel fabric (not one offered). When I received my shoes there was a note explaining why my request was not the best choice and why they went ahead with my second choice. I really appreciated this. The elves took my request seriously and then explained why it would not work. I am proud and happy to wear shoes that were made by people being treated well and paid properly. I appreciate wearing shoes that are good for my feet. I stand and walk A LOT for my job. These ballerine flats can go the distance - very comfortable. I am currently creating two more pairs in my mind and will be ordering them soon. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Softstar shoes as a company and as a product. Bravo! (Posted on 11/15/17)
I can't begin to articulate how much I love these shoes. I never want to take them off!! The leather is such high quality it's like my feet are gently wrapped in silky butter, and don't get me started on the insole!! I really only wear minimalist shoes, usually Vivobarefoot Jing Jing's, but they're going to have to move over now! (Posted on 11/2/17)
I bought some customized ballet flats. I measured my foot and ordered according to the size chart. The shoes were a little tight for three days or so but they never caused blisters. Now the shoes are super comfortable and I love them. They seem well made. (Posted on 10/31/17)
Love love love these shoes, they make me happy every time I wear them. I ordered a size up & added the strap, following the recommendations. That worked out perfectly. I'm super happy with the product, the customer support & the speedy shipping (Posted on 9/22/17)
I've never had shoes that have fit as well as these or received as many compliments. I routinely get asked where did I get my shoes from! I had some sizing issues because my feet are between sizes, and even with custom orders Softstar made the return and exchange so easy and hassle free. I wish I had found them sooner! <3 (Posted on 9/7/17)
The cute look is nice but the comfort is of upmost importance to me. The straps on mine help keep them from slipping. The sole does not pick up dirt easily and they are great for wet areas, seem to be non-slip too. My husband likes heels (of course) which I no longer wear but he wants me to buy another pair of these. I am considering buying a size larger so I can wear them with warm socks in the winter. Thank you for your great shoes! (Posted on 9/6/17)
I got 7.5 because they said it comes in a bigger size I am an 8-8.5 ... anyways they were really nice because I got the ballerinas when there wasn't an offer and the next day there was an offer and they were kind enough to arrange it so I could get the ballerines with discount as well. I tried these because I have a bunion and already bought correct toes so it can help me with my toes. Supposedly these ballerines should be wide enough to wear with the correct toes and I got the ballerines wide. But no way can I wear my correct toes with the ballerines it's way too tight, I should have gotten maybe an 8? I like the flats because your feet don't stink up the shoe even without socks, I do hate that the material inside though gets dirty easily it's that really soft brown material. They are very strong good material I am someone who is always stumbling on everything and the shoes don't have a single scratch nor show a sign of use yet except for the bottom of the shoes and also they can crease. These are just my size and I hope that if I ever get them again I will get them bigger size, at the end I really had hoped my correct toes would've fit as well while wearing the flats :( (Posted on 8/30/17)
As a long time ballet flat devotee, I could not be more pleased with the fit, comfort, craftswomanship, and appearance of my custom flats. After reading rave recommendations from biomechanist Katy Bowman and writer/blogger/mover/nutritionist Denby Royal, I finally ordered my first pair a couple months ago, and am about to receive my second. When ordering my first pair I sent Soft Start my foot measurements, and they made and sent me the size that seemed like it would work best for me. They were too loose and felt as though they'd fall off easily. Soft Star allowed me to return them (even though they were a custom color combo!) and sent me the same pair in the next size down, without charging a fee. So grateful for their commitment to customer satisfaction and the beautiful minimalist shoes they've created that allow my feet to stay healthy and strong. (Posted on 8/29/17)
I really love these because they are so delicate looking and extremely comfortable. They can be worn casually or dressy. I buy them in the wide width even though I don't have wide feet because I wear toe separators with them. I just wish they weren't so expensive. (Posted on 8/29/17)
These shoes are COMFORTABLE, beautiful, wide enough (in regular width) to wear my toe-spacers in yet also fit well without. I can't recommend them highly enough. If you're on the fence, get them! You'll be glad you did. A note on sizing: after watching the sizing video, I ordered an 8. The next pair I order will be a 7. They were so lovely and so comfortable that I wore them around too much to return before deciding I'd rather have a size down. For reference, my feet are 7.5, (24.5 cm long measured with heel at wall) narrow, and low-volume. Because I wanted room for toe spacers, I sized up, but I'm fairly certain my feet will have room for spacers even in a 7--the 8 has quite a bit of extra length. I'll also request in my next pair that the sport closure (love!) be about 3/8 inch shorter on each strap--they are sized for a fuller foot. Remarkably, even though this pair of flats is *not* perfectly sized for me, they are the most comfortable shoes I own. Bliss. (Posted on 7/12/17)
I know just about everyone has said these shoes are amazing, and I agree. They are. I've always loved the look of ballerina flats, but NEVER found a pair I could wear for too long. These were perfect right from the start. I ordered mine with the straps and I could run in them if I wanted to. They're fantastic, and worth every cent. My first pair was hot pink and orange. I'm definitely ordering more. (Posted on 7/10/17)
I have slender feet, average arches, but long toes and bunions. The end of my foot is square across the top. I also have fractured both great toes and the cartilage has eroded, so most everything other than Soft Star Roos are extraordinarily painful...so I wear those, or go barefoot. Finally I decided to try the Sport Ballerine. I went up a size as suggested in the video, and the shoes fit my toes well. Having worn zero drop shoes now for four years, I find my balance is much better; I cannot wear any kind of arch or heel anymore. I love my neutral color choice : lite chocolate with kelp trim. I also bought the black. Happy 70 year old here ! (Posted on 7/5/17)
I had designed the ballerine with the sport strap with the sublime cream body. My goal was to do a tan, neutral color and the cream was the closest I could get to that color. Once the shoes arrived, I saw that the cream was really cream and not close to the tan color that I had hoped. I returned them following the instructions on the website and they credited me the full amount. SoftStar is a wonderful company to work with, but sad that there are no light tan leathers to choose from. (Posted on 6/13/17)
After reading about the health benefits of minimal shoes, I found these ballerine flats and they are so comfortable! I really notice a difference in the way I walk wearing these as opposed to the cushioned flip flops I used to wear. I now have a much more natural gait instead of the clomping around I did while wearing flip flops. In addition to the health benefits, these are very cute and stylish for minimal shoewear. (Posted on 6/11/17)
Perfect minimalist shoes that have the extra spice of being customizable. I love how they look and feel. I prefer the sizing video for gauging my size rather than the paper measurements. (Posted on 6/9/17)
I jumped into barefoot shoes to restructure my feet and then the whole body..per Katy Bowman. I have purchased 8 pairs of flat shoes in the last 2 months. One pair ballet flats each; Tieks, Yosi Samara, Dana Buchman (used), 2 pr from Penny's, one pair NB minimus trail shoes, one pair of flat sandals that I sliced the 1/4" heel off of. So far the Softstars are the absolute most comfortable on any surface except cement/asphalt...we weren't meant to walk on that stuff at all so I resort to more cushion for that. See the blue perforated leather with red trim and silver heel photo. By the way....the transformation is awesome and ongoing...fabulous! (Posted on 5/24/17)
I spend most of my time at home barefoot or in minimalist shoes and I was so worried when I started my new job I wouldn't find shoes that are comfortable, fit well, and are still professional for an office setting. I now own 4 pairs, that is how incredibly well they fit. They are so comfortable and I even made a custom pair to add a little pop of color! I have wide feet and could never wear flats. I am so glad to have such a beautiful, well made, comfortable shoes for work. Everyone asks me about them! (Posted on 5/23/17)
I had been searching for comfortable ballet flats for my size 11WW feet for several years. I tried several popular brands and ended up with sore feet as none actually fit. The Softstar Ballerine is the only one that fit perfect out of the box. The leather is so soft, I almost feel like I'm not wearing shoes at all. I've just ordered 2 more pairs and I'm sure I will be back for more! Also, the customer service at Softstar is outstanding. Thank-you for making the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. (Posted on 4/21/17)
This is my third pair of Soft Star Shoes. Three different models (Mary Jane, Sandals and Ballerine) in three different sizes. For me one size doesn't fit different models. The sizing guides and videos have helped a lot to choose the perfect fit for each model. For the Ballerines -which I found in the Soul Mates section- I chose to size up for a more roomy fit and it is perfect. My toes have space in the toe box and when my feet get warm and "grow" during the day, the shoes remain comfortable. Actually they got more comfortable the longer I wore them. Walking in them is bliss because they are higher in the back which holds the feet nicely and leaves the toes relaxed. If I would have ordered them in my regular size the heel might have been likely to snug and started to hurt my achilles tendon. For all my Soft Star Shoes I have gotten compliments. And now ordered some custom made ballerines with sports closure for summer in the city with lots of walking and bicycling. (Posted on 2/11/17)
Overall, I'm pleased with my Soft Star ballet flats. I have waited a couple of months before writing this review to insure the shoes were well broken in. First, I enjoyed selecting the color of the pumps especially utilizing the "visualizer" which showed the finished product. Second, I like the feel of natural leather which mold to your feet overtime. I know there are other substitutes for natural leather, but for me natural leather works. There is no arch support, but the sole is soft and padded which gives one a barefoot feel.
I only had two problems with the shoes. First, the toe box or area was too small. I followed directions found on the Soft Star website and placed a large sock in the toe box over night. This solved the first problem. Second, a small piece of leather pressed against my toe and caused pain. The leather should have been sewed into the lining, but was left sticking out. I should have returned the ballet flat to Soft Star for correction, but instead I took it upon myself to repair. I used a razor blade and other tools to solve the problem and it worked. I don't recommend this procedure unless you are a baby heart surgeon, bomb defuser, or a diamond cutter. In summary, the ballet flats have become more comfortable each day and I would buy from Soft Star again because I'm happy with the product, workmanship, and service. (Posted on 1/9/17)
I wish these shoes had worked for my feet! They seemed very well made and were really super comfy in the toe box and sole, but the back of the shoe came up too far and poked me in the back of the leg, and then when I walked in them my leg pushed the back of the shoe down onto my foot but then it wasn't really on my foot like it should have been. So bummed to have had to send these back, though. Other than my heel issue, the design seems very well thought out, with an extra layer of leather inside the top of the toe box and an asymmetrical toe box that looks well balanced when on a foot. (Posted on 12/17/16)
Every time I put these shoes on I feel lucky; lucky that I like them so much, lucky that they feel so good...that they look so good...that lovely people made them...just lucky all around! (Posted on 11/28/16)
The ballet flats are my 3rd style ordered from Soft Star and like the previous 2, they are so cute and comfortable. The leather is so soft and I enjoyed customizing my own perfect colors. Keep up the great job! (Posted on 11/17/16)
I pretty much only like minimal shoes and am so happy to have a nice pair to dress up. I have squarish toes, so in most shoes most of my life my poor pinky toe has been squished. I watched the video and go up one size as they suggest, and they work perfectly. I did bright red with a black accent on the heel and I just LOVE the way that came out. Only complaint: If I walk enough distance, they do the old rub-the-achilles. However, I have a fairly pronounced achilles (so this has often been an issue for me) and if it was lower on the heel they may slip more and it's really nice that they don't slip. I LOVE Soft Star and I get questions about them all the time and I always tell people all about you. I should carry cards around. <3 (Posted on 11/15/16)
I love my soft star shoes. I've received numerous compliments on them at work and referred many coworkers to the site to get a pair. They're incredibly comfortable and I can't wait to buy more :) (Posted on 11/15/16)
I got a pair of custom Ballerine flat shoes and I wear them every chance I get. They are the most comfortable shoe I have every owned. I wear them to work, I also walk to work in them and have had no slippage on the back of my heel which has been common for me with other brands of shoes. (Posted on 11/3/16)
I have difficulty finding shoes that are wide enough for my feet. I mean, we are talking WIDE. I love the idea of minimalist shoes, but even most of those aren't wide enough or lack style. While these were tight upon getting them, they are very comfortable. In fact, they are all I wear. I have been eyeing these beauties for years, and I'm not sure why I didn't buy them sooner! (Posted on 11/3/16)
This is my second pair of ballerine flats, and they won't be my last. I love that they look professional enough to wear with business attire because they are the only shoes I have found that don't hurt my feet. Every pair of Soft Star shoes I buy make me want to buy more! Thanks for giving me such happy feet! (Posted on 10/21/16)
These shoes are so comfortable. I recently had surgery to straighten out a fused ankle. I was unable to wear flat shoes as my ankle was fused at an angle where I could only wear shoes with a 1 inch heel. I am now able to wear flat shoes and these are the most comfortable pair I own. They are like walking barefoot.
I have a wide foot but ordered the regular width. They fit perfectly.
It was fun creating the colors I wanted. I plan to order another pair and will try the sport closure. (Posted on 10/16/16)
I got the ballerina flat. Fun to choose the colors of shoe, heel and trim. They are super comfortable. I got my regular size and no strap. The leather is almost like glove leather and conforms to your feet. They are super comfortable and attractive. I'm pleased with the purchase. It would be good if they sold matching shoe polish since many of the colors are unique. (Posted on 10/15/16)
I bought 3 pairs of the Ballerine with Sport Closure because they are so comfortable (and I have "worn out" some of my original Ballerines). I love the comfort--and the Sport closure helps keep them on my feet as I walk "fast." When the shoe leather begins to stretch out, the elastic should help keep them on. I like to customize to go with different outfits. Well worth the money. Great looking, Comfortable, Versatile. (Posted on 9/25/16)

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.
Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.
To measure your feet:
1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.
Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.
If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.
Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

RunAmoc Sole Comparison
Very high level of groundfeel. Our thinnest and lightest sole. Minimal space between feet and ground.
High level of groundfeel. Extra thickness adds durability. Tread pattern provides additional traction on rough surfaces.
Our most flexible sole! 3–4mm thick (natural hides vary slightly). Pliable texture provides our highest level of groundfeel and most unrestricted foot movement.
All-natural leather material allows grounding conductivity (see earthing).
Perfect for running on smooth surfaces or for trail runners who have strengthened their feet to tolerate groundfeel of rough surfaces.
Ideal for trail runners and those who want barefoot movement with protection while running over rough surfaces, such as gravel or rocky paths. Also a favorite for street runners who prefer durability over maximum groundfeel.
Recommended for people new to minimalist running shoes.

Pros & Cons
Pros: A favorite for its stylish look and extremely cozy feel.
Cons: Not water resistant, unless treated with a suede protector leathercare. Requires more effort to clean (we recommend a suede brush).
Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.
Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold (still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes).
Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.
Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!
Our suede leather is a popular choice for casual everyday shoes that look and feel fantastic! Many people use it for athletic shoes as well, though it does require extra effort to keep dry and clean.
Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.
While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leathercare.
Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.
In the fall of 2009, we noticed a sharp increase in calls from customers requesting modifications to our existing line of minimalist moccasins. We were surprised to learn that people weren't only wearing them around the house, but to run trails, marathons and even ultramarathons. With interest increasing in barefoot running, we began development of a barefoot running moccasin designed by and for runners.
Softstar called on our online community of fans to solicit input on ideal features to design a new shoe specifically for runners that was light, ventilated and featured super thin and flexible running soles. Our fantastic customers submitted ideas, provided feedback on prototypes and ultimately voted on the name RunAmoc. Since the very successful launch of the Original RunAmoc (now discontinued), we have added the Dash, Moc3 and Primal to the line. We hope you find these unique running shoes to be a benefit to your training routine and a treat for your feet!
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TRANSITIONING TO MINIMAL RUNNING SHOES:
Making the switch from traditional shoes to minimal shoes or barefoot running/walking should be done gradually with research and advice from healthcare professionals to prevent injury. It is not recommended to begin heavy running in minimalist/barefoot shoes until your feet have adapted properly. You will probably be tempted to just take off since they are FUN and you feel like a kid in them, but you may end up injuring yourself if you plunge into full speed without proper conditioning. You may want to read this article that includes tips and training plans for transitioning safely:
