The leathercraft artisans of Nativearth Shoes have been designing high quality, historic footwear for over 25 years at a workshop in Mariposa, California—nestled alongside beautiful Yosemite National Park. We are excited to partner with fellow eco-conscious makers of healthy footwear to bring you their wonderful historical boots.

Tough enough for hiking yet hip enough for Burning Man, this time-honored button boot design will quickly earn a treasured place in your wardrobe. Unlike other historical boots that leave you in pain at the end of the day, the Nativearth Voyager boot cradles your heel and wraps your feet in flexible leather uppers for ultimate comfort and support. Soft moccasin-style construction allows the leather to shape to your feet and allow natural, healthy movement. The Voyager is crafted from rich and durable 8oz bullhide leather with five intricate silver Celtic buttons and lugged zero drop Vibram soles.

Nativearth Voyager boots should fit snug when new and stretch to fit glove-like to your feet. With occasional cleaning and moisturizing, these historical boots will last a lifetime!

  • Designed and handcrafted by Nativearth artisans in California, USA.
  • Made from supple 8 ounce full grain bullhide leather. With wear, leather will stretch around your feet and calves to form a glove-like fit.
  • Each Nativearth Voyager boot features five silver Celtic buttons secured with hand-sewn sinews.
  • Zero drop 8mm Vibram Kletterlift Sole. This sole is commonly used on shoes for firefighters and law enforcement officers due to its maximum surface traction in rugged or wet conditions.
  • 8oz bullhide leather laces are handcut and tested at 300 lb load.

Shipping Notice:

Caring for Voyager Boots

With occasional cleaning and waxing/oiling, your boots will maintain their quality and last many years.

Cleaning:

Spot clean the leather by rubbing gently with a damp cloth. For tough stains, you may use a gentle shampoo, saddle soap or a mild detergent. If boots become wet then stuff them with newspaper and dry overnight, but do not leave them near high heat.

Regular Care:

As needed, wipe boots clean and and nourish with hand cream or a leathercare wax/oil designed for full grain leather (such as Bee Natural Leather Amore). This is especially important if the leather begins to appear dry to prevent cracking.

Annual Care:

We recommend waterproofing your boots once a year to keep the leather supple and protected. You can waterproof the boots using Huberd's grease or other waterproofing products designed for full grain leather (such as Nickwax Full Grain Leather Waterproofing).

Customer Questions
How do I lace Voyager boots?

One end of the leather lace on Voyager boots is connected to the leather just below the lowest button. This lace loops through pull tabs and around the silver buttons to provide a snug and secure fit. To make lacing easy, you never need to remove the lace from the pull tabs; simply loop the lace over the buttons and pull slack through the tabs to tighten, or pull the lace off the buttons to release tension and remove the boot.

How do Voyager boots fit compared to other Softstar shoes?

Since Voyager boots are not designed or made by Softstar, they feature a slightly different sole shape than you will find on our shoes and will generally feel more fitted. We have adjusted the sizing scale of Voyager boots in the dropdown menu above to match the size of our standard adult shoes. We recommend following our size chart to find the best fit for your feet.

When you try on a new pair of Voyager boots, remember that they should feel a little tight at first—but not painfully so. The leather will stretch and mold to the shape of your foot as you wear them. If the boots do not feel a little tight when new then they may stretch out to become too big over time.

What is the historical tradition of the Voyager boot?

The Voyager is modeled after traditional boots worn commonly throughout northern Europe as far back as the 11th century, particularly in Anglo-Saxon and Highland regions. Due to the long span of its popularity, this boot is an ideal and authentic choice for Renaissance fairs, medieval reenactments, SCA events and a variety of other historic costumes. The rubber sole of the boot is the only part that has been replaced by modern materials.

Can damaged Voyager boots be repaired?

Yes, depending on the extent of the damage. Since these boots are made by Nativearth, repairs must be arranged directly with their customer service and sent to their workshop in Mariposa, California.

For more information or to facilitate a repair, contact Nativearth by sending an email to [email protected] or by calling 888-628-4832.

Button Repair

If one of your boot's buttons comes off (possibly a sign of overtightening laces) and you are feeling handy, then Nativearth has provided these instructions for home DIY button repair. Materials required are the button, scissors, a sturdy needle, a lighter, an awl and a length of sinew. Waxed imitation sinew works well and is available at most craft stores. If you do not feel up to the task then you can send your boots to Nativearth to replace the button for you:

Are Nativearth Voyager boots lined with sheepskin fleece?

No, Nativearth Voygaer boots are not lined with sheepskin fleece. The inside of the boot is just the inner side of the thick bullhide leather.

Can I customize the Nativearth Voyager boot?

Nativearth only supplies Softstar with brown Voyager boots so that is the only color you can purchase from our website, but you can customize the boot if you order directly from the Nativearth website. The price on their site is the same as the price on our website when the same Vibram Kletterlift sole is selected, but keep in mind that discounts on our site may not apply when purchased from Nativearth.
