Help Us Create Your Dream Hiking Boot

Update October 2021: Thanks to everyone for your feedback. At long last, our new hiking boot is now available!

One of our most common fan requests is for Softstar to design a minimalist hiking boot. We heard you and we're making it happen! Our talented shoe designers are hard at work with a few innovative ideas, but they want to know what YOU want in a hiking boot, so we need your input.

What is most important to you when choosing a hiking boot for your adventures? What features would your ideal Softstar hiking boot include? We want to hear whatever feedback you can give us, whether it's about aesthetics, functionality, materials, etc.

Let us know your thoughts by using the form below to leave a comment on this post. We hope to delight your feet with a new design by November of this year, and we can't wait to hear your ideas!

I'm new to minimalist/barefoot shoes and was looking for the perfect hiking boot for me. Haven't found it yet. Need wide toe box, zero drop, some cushioning and thicker sole with good grip (vibram) - so it's maybe not 100% minimalist - waterproof, over the ankle, snug fit around lower ankle.

please take a look at russell moccasin co. minamalist thula thula for what i consider to be the closest thing on the market to a perfect minamalist hiking boot, price no object. a more affordable version with primal toebox would be the next level.

Your Primal sole, its one if the very few minimalist shoes that fit my very wide feet! As flexible as your other shoes. A waterproof option could be great, there isn't lots of waterproof minimalist options, and none as as far as know, with a sole as wide as your primal.

I love my moccasins - the moose hide soles keep me grounded. i walk in them whenever its not too wet. I'd love to have hiking boots with hide soles that are whatever waterproof on top and not slippery and well sealed at the seams on the bottom.

Primal toe box, but with a narrow option for the sole. I have low volume feet with narrow heels, but a primal toe spread, and can’t find a good (or even mediocre) fit in any hiking boots.

    Hi,

It seems like you could come out with two new shoes for hiking; one like the Moc3 for warmer conditions, and another, more bootlike shoe for colder, more constantly wet conditions, possibly like your Sawyer but with a material that could be treated for water resistance (or left alone so that they would dry more quickly).

Both models would ideally have something like the Primal fit you offer, would be durable for long backpacking trips and easy to maintain, have very grippy soles (and resolable if possible), have a way to attach gaiters or another way to keep out debris, and have removable/replaceable Primal shaped inserts for varying conditions and preferences (Rock guard, more cushioning, more warmth).

Thank you for your work on this project. I’m excited to see what you come up with.

I think that having a shoe that can handle a variety of terrain is important. Ground feel is key. Removable rock plates or something that can keep the rocks and roots from killing your sole is great. I sell shoes for a living, and I have had a lot of people lately who are on the wider size of foot, so I think accommodating that would be a huge selling point too.

There are plenty of light duty minimalist boots available. What I see people looking for, including myself, is a zero drop boot that is rugged, waterproof, and has some protection for the foot while still being flexible. Soles with good traction that are thick enough to protect the foot from rocks, etc, but still flexible so they don't cause the ankle to turn- similar to the Mini-Mil soles for thickness and flexibility, but sown on rather than glued. Tall enough to keep weeds and rocks out. A minimalist replacement for heavy old mountain boots.
