7 Best Shoes to Wear With Correct Toes

7 Best Shoes to Wear With Correct Toes

Whether you are just starting out in your foot health journey or have been building healthy feet for years, chances are that you have heard of Correct Toes. If you don't know about them, Correct Toes are flexible silicone toe spacers created by Dr. Ray McClanahan to prevent and cure foot problems without surgery. They are also a great tool for restoring natural foot shape and function while improving strength and flexibility for overall foot health.

Dr. McClanahan created the spacers as a tool to return toes to a natural alignment, as they are often malformed after years of wearing conventional and constricting footwear. Common foot and leg problems that may benefit from the use of Correct Toes include bunions, heel pain, hammertoes, Morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, and more. Even if you do not have a specific foot or leg condition, these toe spacers can reduce injury rates, improve proprioception and balance and even boost athletic performance when worn during weight-bearing activities.

Because Correct Toes are placed between the toes to promote a wide toe splay, they are often uncomfortable (sometimes impossible) to wear with traditional shoes that have narrow or tapered toe boxes. Wearing these toe spacers in narrow toe box shoes counteracts the benefits that the Correct Toes provide, so it is crucial to find shoes spacious enough to accommodate the new, wider toe splay that comes along with them.

We are proud to say that many of our styles have been evaluated and reviewed by the Correct Toes staff, and have been certified as either “Correct Toes approved” or “Natural foot approved”. Dr. McClanahan has even been recommending Softstar shoes to his patients for years. Here are some short descriptions of our most Correct Toes-friendly shoes based on customer feedback. Please remember that the fit and comfort of Correct Toes may vary depending on your unique foot shape, so use this information along with our sizing chart to determine which style is best for you!

Primal RunAmocs

Hailed as the “widest natural toe box shoe on the market” by the Correct Toes staff, the Primal RunAmoc has an extremely wide toe box to freely accommodate splay created by toe spacers (or a naturally wide foot shape). This should come as no surprise since Correct Toes inventor Dr. McClanahan himself tested this sole shape and gave Softstar feedback during the design process. The Primal RunAmoc, like all Softstar shoes, features a flexible, zero drop sole and soft, breathable uppers made from responsibly-sourced full grain leather. This style also features a rubber toe cap made from upcycled bicycle inner tubes for added durability. It would be challenging to find a shoe that is more accommodating to the toe spacers.

Dash RunAmocs

The Dash RunAmoc is one of our most popular styles because our customers love the secure lace-up closure, soft leather uppers and thin flexible soles. The internal seams and ample toe box are what make the Dash a great shoe to wear with Correct Toes. Many of our customers are most comfortable in a wide width in this style when wearing their toe spacers to accommodate the most room in the toe box as possible. This style is available with a 2mm Street sole, a 5mm Trail sole, or a bullhide leather sole for those who are looking for a non-rubber alternative.

Roo Moccasins

Our classic Roo moccasin is an excellent choice for wearing Correct Toes due to the soft sheepskin innersoles, relaxed fit and flexible suede outer soles. These slippers are typically worn as an indoor slipper, but can be worn outside in dry conditions if you so choose. If you normally wear wide-width shoes, we recommend trying a wide width in this style to accommodate extra room for your foot and the Correct Toes together. Otherwise, a regular width should fit well.

Merry Janes

This lightweight casual shoe is great for everyday wear. The secure strap and buckle of the Merry Jane keep the shoe snug on your feet, while the leather uppers and lightweight soles provide a natural barefoot experience. Many of our customers prefer a wide width for this style when wearing Correct Toes because it allows for the most room for toe splay while the buckle closure provides a secure fit for the midfoot.

Ballerines (WIDE width)

Most flats feature tapered toes and stiff, rigid soles, but our Ballerines are different! These foot-friendly shoes feature memory foam innersoles for all day comfort, flexible soles and a wide variety of colorful full grain leathers to choose from. Because this shoe can fit a bit snug in comparison to our other styles, we recommend moving into a wide width when wearing Correct Toes. If your feet are narrow in the midfoot or the heel, you might also consider adding an elastic Sports Closure to ensure that the shoes fit securely on your feet for maximum comfort.

Rogues

The Rogue is a casual slip-on style that is a good option for men and women. Featuring a minimal Vibram sole and full grain leathers lined with a stretchy Breathe-o-Prene lining, the Rogue is an all-season favorite. This style is only available in a regular width, so depending on the shape of your foot it may not always be compatible with Correct Toes. Some of our customers have had success moving up one size larger, which in turn provides a bit more width and space for the toe spacers to fit comfortably.

Ramblers

The Rambler has the same body design as our Roo moccasin, but with the addition of a rubber outer sole for added durability in outdoor conditions. The elastic ankle closure allows for easy on-off and the soft leathers will make you think you’re wearing slippers all day long. This style is most compatible with Correct Toes in a wide width.

What shoe out there in the world has a wide toe box but a thick sole? I like lots of padding and a stiff sole with a wide toe box.
