Softstar is a sustainable company that strives to “walk lightly upon the Earth,” and we know our customers do too! However, low in impact is one thing…light of foot is another. Our Rugged Rambler is perfect for kids who are especially tough on their shoes. Made with our durable Trail sole, this shoe features the same comfort and fit as our regular Rambler, but built for heavy-duty use on playgrounds, trails or wherever adventure beckons. Elastic concealed in the ankle seam secures the shoe to the foot while enabling the wearer to slip it on and off with ease. The Ocean blue and Purple leather Rugged Rambler comes equipped with our suede innersole, and genuine sheepskin innersole inserts can be added for moisture-wicking temperature regulation from summer to winter. Ramble on, comfort-lovers, ramble on!

  • Flexible Vibram rubber sole for durable outdoor use
  • Suede innersoles (sheepskin innersole inserts can be added separately)
  • Indoor/outdoor shoe

Easy, comfy, touch wide and light! Review by Rebecca
We have purchased many Soft Star shoes thru the years. This style is a favorite for they are comfy, easy to put on, light with fun colors. These run a bit wide for us. I ordered regular instead of narrow for it is fall and socks will be worn but they are still a bit wide but not unbearable. We will just order narrow for next pair.... (Posted on 11/23/16)
Long Lasting Rambler! Review by outdoorfamily
I got my order of Youth Rugged Ramblers in September 2015 and my kids have been wearing them without any visible wear issues at all! I got them for a 6 year old and a 4 year old. The standard ramblers were not holding up to their activity level of biking, walking, hiking, and running as well as they had as toddlers. These ramblers, however, have withstood all of their activities and still look great! They have worn the same pair for the last 3 months and look like they will last a whole lot longer! I also have to add that this company has amazing customer service. We have been ordering shoes since 2012 and I have always been treated courteously and promptly. They really do strive to make you happy with your purchase. Thanks for another fantastic order of shoes Soft Star! Keep up the great work!

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Review by Another Driftless Mom
For the past 9 years or so, I have been searching high and low for a shoe that allows my kids to be as barefoot as possible. After spending a lot of money on high priced shoes that I was never really satisfied with, I finally found these! My kids are barefoot except at school and after wearing these to school, my daughter enthusiastically reported (without me even asking her) that these are by far the best shoes she's ever worn. She said they work GREAT for outdoor play, running, climbing, etc. She loves them. Another cool thing - my daughter was concerned that they might look weird, but she gets compliments on them pretty much everywhere that she goes with them on. My only complaint would be that I didn't learn about these 9 years ago! Also, I got these without the sheepskin sole and she doesn't seem to mind that, although later I ordered a different pair with sheepskin and she LOVES the feel of the sheepskin, even with socks on. Best Youth Rambler yet! Review by outdoormama
My 8yo boy has worn ramblers since he could walk. This pair is by far our favorite, with the barged-on trail sole. SS Ramblers are the ONLY shoe my active boy will wear. Very comfortable, easy on/off. Excellent for hiking. The 2 issues we have always had with ramblers are now resolved: grippy sole with great traction, and no exposed stitching on sole. All previous ramblers would have to be re-stitched 2-3 times in the course of a year by local cobbler, making them very costly in the end. Thankyou Soft Star for making the PERFECT rambler for my boy! (Posted on 6/26/14)

Find Your Child's Size!

You can measure your children's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your child's bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Move your child's foot away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Look for your measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

  • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
  • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method (especially when measuring squirmy children) then you may want to try our printable size guides. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print these guides, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
