We love innovation. But in some cases, the best way to move forward, is to take a step back. The Roo moccasin is footwear uninvented. Made with natural materials that are high in quality and few in number, these shoes are built to let the wearer fully experience the world underfoot.

Suede Turquoise and Navy blue uppers wrap the foot in rich, breathable leather. The traditional suede soles are flexible and soft, well-suited to both indoor and dry outdoor use. Suede is naturally durable and initially non-skid, wearing into a smoother, moisture-resistant surface over time; don’t worry, you can always restore the soles’ non-skid properties by gently rubbing the sole with a wire brush!

Inside the shoe, luxurious sheepskin innersoles keep your child’s feet protected, dry, and oh-so-comfortable. Genuine sheepskin is nature's heat regulator—it keeps feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter! Inner elastic hugs the ankle for a secure fit that’s easy on, easy off…that is, if they ever decide to take them off!

  • Genuine sheepskin innersoles keep feet dry in summer & warm in winter while providing comfort and cushioning
  • Indoor / dry outdoor shoe
  • Elastic ankle closure—easy on and off
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Handcrafted in USA from premium, responsibly-sourced leathers

Sizing note: If you need this shoe in a smaller size, you can find it in our Child Shoes category. For a larger size, check out our Adult Shoes category. Color options may differ for child or adult shoes.

Great As Usual Review by mamak

Another great pair of soft star mocs. My 10 year old has been wearing the Soft Star mocs most his life and even enjoyed the soled shoes when he was younger. Now everyone in the family enjoys a nice pair of Moc house shoes for the winter months. They are durable and comfortable when used inside. Concrete can wear out the toes very fast. (Posted on 1/4/16)
Lasted 11 months... Review by Naomi

I got my four-year-old daughter a pair of grippy roos last November. We just this month had to order a new pair because she wore them OUT. The side seam is splitting on her old ones and the soles have some holes in them. They have been her main shoes all year. The only time she doesn't wear them is when it is raining, or if a relative gives her a pair of fancy shoes that light up or something. In the latter case, she will wear the fancy shoes for one day because they are pretty, then go back to her roos because they are comfortable. The only downside to her roos, besides the fact that they can't get wet, is that they started smelling really bad toward the end of their life. Anyway. I think a Softstar investment once a year is very much worth it. (Posted on 10/8/14)
Adult baby shoes! Review by Megi

I am an adult with tiny feet. I bought these shoes mostly to wear around the house because I thought it would be cute if my son and I were both wearing "baby shoes." Hah. It is going to be hard to take these off during snowy weather outside. So flexible and comfortable! I'm totally going to order some more pairs to wear as everyday shoes! (Posted on 11/1/12)

Find Your Child's Size!

You can measure your children's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your child's bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Move your child's foot away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Look for your measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

  • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
  • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method (especially when measuring squirmy children) then you may want to try our printable size guides. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print these guides, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Care Tips for Suede Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede protector leathercare product. While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any Softstar shoes as it will mat the fibers of our natural leather and will break down the adhesive soling on styles that have bonded soles.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
