We know that nothing beats a moccasin for barefoot comfort…after all, who doesn’t want to be constantly enveloped in buttery leather and fluffy sheepskin? Unfortunately, the gentle, peaceful moccasin has some natural enemies: wet weather, jagged terrain…rough-asphalted skate parks. So which do you choose: comfort, or resilience?

Trick question—no choice necessary! We’ve designed the Rambler to provide both durable soling AND the cozy fit of your child’s favorite moccasins. This shoe features a flexible, stitched-on Vibram sole that resists water, debris, and other unpredictable obstacles of growing up. Elastic concealed in the ankle seam secures the shoe to the foot while enabling the wearer to slip it on and off with ease. The Flamingo pink and Peacock green leather Rambler comes equipped with our suede innersole, and genuine sheepskin innersole inserts can be added for moisture-wicking temperature regulation from summer to winter. Ramble on, comfort-lovers, ramble on!

  • Flexible Vibram rubber sole for durable outdoor use
  • Suede innersoles (sheepskin innersole inserts can be added separately)
  • Indoor/outdoor shoe
  • Elastic ankle closure - Easy on, secure it, easy off!
  • Handcrafted in USA from premium, responsibly-sourced leathers

Sizing note: If you need this shoe in a smaller size, you can find it in our Child Shoes category. For a larger size, check out our Adult Shoes category. Color options may differ for child or adult shoes.

comfortable but ugly Review by Domonic
These are supremely comfortable and easy on the feet, but I wore these once and I was laughed out of town.
Frankly, these are ugly as all get-out. Not very sleek, kinda blobby, color combo is way more questionable than it looks in the photos. Really just a mess design-wise.
Also, the front and back of the upper aren't sewn together. They're held together by the heel elastic at the top. This isn't actually a negative, but it wasn't clear from the photos, so I figured I'd throw it in here. Might let in water if you're using it the wet, but I can't really speak to that.
Anyway, like I say, these are not stylish. Elves, please consider something like a straightforward slipper in a single color. I like everything else about the shoe, but the look was a deal breaker. Had to return mine.

Note from the Elves: Thanks for the review Domonic! Please check out our custom Ramblers - you can pick any color you wish! (Posted on 11/17/17)
Popular shoes for my girl Review by Karin
Unfortunately these shoes were too large for my daughters, so they'll have to wait until they can wear them. However, for the youngest girl we bought a new pair and she just loves them! (Posted on 5/10/17)
Cute shoes!! Review by Holley
My 9 year old daughter loves these. She is a dedicated barefoot warrior and she wears these everywhere. Her crocs are getting jealous with all the wear time she's getting in with these. Highly recommend these for those kids that love to go barefoot but need some protection against the outside elements. (Posted on 4/28/17)
Daughter LOVES them! Review by Francine
First pair of shoes that actually truly fit! We were worried that the wide would not be wide enough, so the AWESOME staff helped us out with that. We sent them a tracing of her feet and they said she would be close. We decided to try them and she's spot on. (Posted on 11/25/16)
nothing but ramblers Review by lovro's dad
my son lovro is 8 and the only shoes he wants are these. he wears the hell out of them and even some boys at school teased him these being slippers and not proper trainers and he doesn't care at all and has these on all the time.. actually he wears soft star shoes all his life... off to buy another pair! PCE! (Posted on 8/16/16)
Great light foot shaped shoes Review by Janeh
I ordered these shoes from the UK because shoes for bigger boys in the more common brands (eg Clarks, Start Rite) were getting more and more pointed in shape and inflexible. I was a bit worried about whether the fit would be right but they are fine. I was surprised by how light and flexible they are. I think the perfect shoe for my boys would be the Roo moccasin with the grippy sole but these are too expensive because of being a special order. Perhaps these are better for winter though. Hope they are strong enough to put up with boys playing. (Posted on 9/5/15)
Great Review by aj
My kids have been loving Soft Star Ramblers for 3 years now. They hold up well (2 kids worth), they're fun, and good for feet. (Posted on 5/26/15)
love them! Review by ronan's mom
My son is picky about shoes. We have been getting Soft Stars almost his entire life (he's 8) these are the best we have purchased. I am on the site again because he has out grown his 4 youth. They have really molded to the form of his feet, and though i would agree with another reviewer about the tread becoming slippery, my son has worked with these fine. The easy on and off is also huge for us when we are already late getting out the door. (Posted on 2/4/13)

Find Your Child's Size!

You can measure your children's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your child's bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Move your child's foot away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Look for your measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

  • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
  • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method (especially when measuring squirmy children) then you may want to try our printable size guides. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print these guides, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
