Best for wide feetReview by Hiedi

I tried several brands of wide width shoes and there was nothing my 3 year old could even get close to shoving his foot into independently. He designed his shoe, I went for the thicker sole and sheepskin and we both live them. The leather is soft but durable and they go on easily and stay on during play. All that and an ethical product- well worth the money. (Posted on 3/18/16)

She picked out all of the colors herself and she loves them. She wears them constantly and usually with no socks. And no stink! She even asked to wear them to soccer the other day instead of her sneakers. I am happy that her feet are in healthy shoes! Thank you, Elves! (Posted on 1/11/16)

I am so impressed with these shoes, I'm already planning my next order. My son shows everyone his new 'rocket shoes' and they are his favorite thing to wear.

I love that they are handmade in the USA and through a toxin free process. I ordered wide for my son and they are so easy to get on his large feet.

I will be ordering a pair for my daughter as well and look forward to soft star sandals for the warmer months.

I've been eyeing these shoes for probably a year, and finally decided to take the plunge after a daily battle to get my daughter to wear shoes, These are great! Just enough structure and sole to keep her feet protected, but flexible and lightweight and so far, pretty durable. (Posted on 11/25/15)

As always soft star rambler comfortable, well made, adorable, perfect fit. Both grandsons and myself wore soft stars to Disney world, fellow travelers at the resort commented on these and couldn't believe how our feet were in such great shape after the long days and walking in Disney with these minimilist shoes. No blisters or sore feet for us.Had to tell them about soft star shoes and the benefit to both adult and childrens feet. (Posted on 11/12/15)

Both of my children have custom ramblers. They love them! With a sensory child this is so important. The fit is great. The elves were so helpful seeing as I had never ordered before I wasn't sure how to make the best fit. We had to return the shoes a couple of times but are so pleased with the end result they were worth the wait. Highly recommend. (Posted on 10/20/15)

My kids love these. I always get the wide version so their feet will not be constrained. Just make sure you get the rugged soles, because the regular soles have exposed stitches on the bottom that your kids will wear through in a matter of weeks. With the sheepskin innersoles, these are comfortable from fall to spring. They are not very waterproof and take a few days to dry out once wet, so if there are large puddles then I have them wear rubber boots. I have bought Soft Star Shoes for myself, my wife, and my three kids for the past five years or so and never regretted a single pair.

Note from Soft Star Shoes: Thanks Peter! It is true that some children do wear through the standard soles and must get the thicker rugged soles for durability. Our customer experience over the years via phone, email and direct retail shows us about 5% of kids need the rugged sole - particularly as they move into the larger sizes, but the majority of our customers get great durability on the lighter-weight, standard soles. We suggest starting with the standard soles as they are the most flexible and economical option. (Posted on 10/4/15)

My grandson's family is on an extended trip and I wanted to give the Ramblers as a birthday gift. I called the elves on aTues. morning, explained the situation and expected to have the shoes sent to me. They were made and shipped that very day and on my grandson's feet by Fri. Thank you elves! Love these perfect shoesReview by Crazy foot health lady

This is our second pair of child ramblers and our 7th pair of soft star shoes as a family. Our daughter wore these shoes all last spring and then all last fall. This year they are too small, so we are back for another pair. They are cute, easy to put on (at almost three she can put them on herself), rugged (last year's pair still look like new), and most importantly, they are excellent for her natural foot development. I love that I was able to do a DYO of wild colors without having to worry about returning. The pair we got this year were a little on the small side, so we wanted to go with the bigger size. No problem and the return was easy peasy. When I made the exchange, I decided that I'd prefer to order the shoes with the off-menu, non-returnable "soft touch" soles that are available if you call and place your order with one of the elves. The soft touch soles are extremely thin and flexible and provide the best possible groundfeel with rubber soles. However, if you make this change to the sole, they are no longer returnable, so you would want to be 100% sure about the sizing first (might make sense to order a couple of pairs off the rack in order to get a sense of the sizing). The elves were very straightforward with me that the soft-touch soles wear out more quickly, are not as durable, and also wouldn't be returnable. But I was very happy with my child's DYO sandals that I got last year with the special ordered soft-touch sole, so I had no reservation about pulling the trigger, especially since I was positive about the sizing. Love being able to pick the colors. Worth the extra money for my daughter to feel like she "designed" them herself. People love them and are always commenting.
Some reviewers comment about the ridge all the way around the shoe. This was a bit of an issue last year when my daughter was about to be two, but now she is a smooth operator and has no problems tripping over the ridge. Thank you for making these shoes! LOVE!!!! (Posted on 4/29/15)

Sizing Tips

Unsure about your child's size? Our printable guide will help you find the best fit for your feet! Just click the button below to print the guide and follow the instructions on the page (if you don't have access to a printer then scroll down for another option).

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Want more details? Check out this video for visual step-by-step instructions:

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  • 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  • 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  • 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  • 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

  • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
  • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

Baby and Child Shoe Size Chart

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Care

Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole* of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth* and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water*. We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding, and do NOT put shoes the dryer. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
