What makes a Classic…classic? Is it the quality? The clean, versatile design? The sense of history? Sure, and this shoe certainly has it all. However, we know the real reason families have turned to the Classic for three decades is simple: it works! Perfect for year-round wear, this closed-toe, smooth leather shoe keeps out sand, dirt, water, and anything else the playground can dish out. An easy adjustable Velcro strap at the ankle allows kids to pull these shoes on and off themselves for uninterrupted, independent adventures. Thin and flexible rubber soles promote natural foot movement and development, and genuine sheepskin innersoles can be added for warmth, comfort, and natural moisture-wicking. From first steps to first hikes, nothing beats a Classic!

  • Shoelace closure for adjustable fit; please note that Classics with laces may be more easily removed by your little one than shoes with Velcro or elastic closures, especially for very young children
  • Indoor/outdoor shoe
  • Choose from your own colors, cutouts or appliqués
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Rubber sole is thin, flexible, and durable
  • Naturally water-resistant
  • Handcrafted in the USA
  • Custom shoes in like-new condition are fully returnable/exchangeable according to the terms of our return policy.

The sole for this shoe will vary depending on the size you order:

favorite shoe for the cute factor Review by Katherine
we get endless compliments on these shoes and they are really comfortable my only issues is that the laces seem to come untied, although that might be my problem not the shoe! (Posted on 10/11/17)
AMAZING shoe! Great colors and style. The shoe that stays on. Review by lola
Although my little chunkster outgrew these WAYYYY to fast and I'm super sad about it. They were a great first walking shoe. Her sweaty feet did turn purple a few times from the leather, but only because it is genuine leather. They never gave her blisters. And I received compliments daily. Often from adults wishing you made this shoe in their size. I hope to purchase more. (Posted on 9/27/17)
Excellent purchase Review by Claire Louise
I come from the UK and cannot get shoes to fit my son as feet so wide. Softstar wide fit are perfect and fit his I width feet (extra wide in UK) great value for money. I had laces with him as my other son has Velcro and kept taking them off but I wish they were slightly longer to double knot them as he's only 1 and he can undo them at will! Also, it would be nice to add a UK size box to your ordering maybe in brackets as I ordered a 4 thinking in UK terms but should have ordered a 5 to make them last longer. I understand this was my fault but it's just an idea :) they soften up nicely with use and don't go out of shape so certainly would recommend over the pond! (Posted on 9/5/17)
DONT buy leather laces for a young one! Review by Karen
I think leather laces shouldnt be for sale they were so terrible I had to go and buy different laces to use the shoes. The leather was impossible to adjust perfectly (as really you can see if its tight when they stand and listen babies are wild its hard enough to pin my monkey down) they kinda kept getting stuck together in the closing process even after a few weeks. The laces were so long I had to double knot them and readjust them was just a pain undoing double knots (otherwise he would pull them open or they would get hooked on things in the playground!). If they werent perfect the baby could pull them off if they were too tight they left marks on his ankles the leather straps are VERY narrow. They were just the worst! Now the shoe itself was great now that I can use it (I still hate laces I wish I could afford to get ones without).

But despite my grape with the leather laces (i dont think laces are good for young babies just buy the velcro dont be cheap like me) I absolutely recommend these shoes in a heart beat. They are the most affordable and listen if your faced with buying non min shoes or the cheapest of the line here just buy these even though they arent perfect. Im in love with this company and I feel bad saying anything bad about such craftsmanship. This is the perfect footbed for babies/older kids. Ive bought jack n lillys, bogs, merrelly min type shoes and these are the best Ive tried after 3 kids.

NOTE FROM THE ELVES: Thanks Karen for your review and feedback on the leather laces.. Please email us for regular cotton laces for your shoes - we would be happy to mail you a pair. (Posted on 8/22/17)
Love these shoes! Review by Sarah
These shoes are absolutely wonderful and Soft Star customer service is amazing, as always. The only down side to these shoes is that they have to be tied which isn't easy with a bouncy wild 1yo :) We got them in peacock color with star laces, and the combination is fabulous--I get compliments everywhere I go. And the price on these are so great too! Definitely recommend these and will definitely buy again in the future. Thank you Soft Star! (Posted on 5/15/17)
Toddler constantly tripping Review by Vicky
My daughter is 3 years old and wears size 8. She is constantly tripping on side walks while wearing soft star shoes. She doesn't trip in other regular brand shoes. I really like the look and flexibility of the shoes but I'm so upset I can't have her wear them for worry that she will trip and hurt herself.

Note from the Elves: Thanks Vicky for your review. Please contact our Customer Service elves to review sizing - your experience does not sound good and we would like to work with you to make sure you have the correct size. (Posted on 1/30/17)
Cute, comfy and fun! Review by Claire
Love these shoes! I bought them for my almost 3 year old, and they're a bit big, so we can't wait for spring to come so she can romp around in them. The yellow leather is charming, soft, and easy to clean. The soles do seem a bit thick (we got size 8) but still seem flexible and comfortable. I prefer the laces because she can't take them off, but next time I'll likely get the velcro to make on/offs faster. (Posted on 12/28/16)
Perfecto! Review by Mama & Oonagh
My newly 3 year old refuses to wear shoes because they are heavy! (We have been very conscientious of purchasing bendable shoes with wide toe boxes.) After an almost completely barefoot summer she just hated all shoes, even barefoot friendly ones.

Well, as soon as these arrived my little one put them right on, and said soooo comfy, and not heavy.

I recommend the sheepskin lining because they are sooo soft and comfy (Posted on 11/26/16)
These shoes are magical! Review by Ellie and Her Mommy
I'm Ellie and am 4 years old. I have Autism and often times become obsessed with things, (like picking all the skin off my sweaty feet), but since I got my new shoes with the fuzzy insides I stopped! My feet can breathe now, and the owies on my feet have all healed up! Thank you elves for my magic shoes! (Posted on 11/15/16)
Good shoe, needs better laces Review by Naomi
This is our 3rd pair of these shoes and obviously we like them. This is my 2 year olds second pair and my 4 year old also has them. We got them in nutmeg for both girls with the tear drop cut out. We get so many compliments on how cute they are. We're very happy with them. This time however the laces are of different quality and even when double knotted come untied even before my toddler gets to them. Otherwise they're amazing and the same soft star shoe quality we expect. Keep up the great work elves! (Posted on 6/21/16)
Cute, thick sole Review by scarter
I ordered size 8 shiny pink with star laces and sheepskin innersole. I love these shoes for my 2.5 year old. I was worried she might not take to wearing them as she can be picky, but for awhile she was happy to wear them to school for me. However, if she has the option she prefers tight and narrow slip on shoes that make me wonder if her toes can move at all. These shoes were surprisingly tight to get on through the top part, but I think the leather is stretching over time. There's plenty of room around the ankle and toes. I don't understand how it would work for the reviewers who mention the cutouts are near their child's arch. My daughter has a long narrow foot, and I've never considered it tall. If your child has a tall foot at all you may need special sizing for this shoe. The sheepskin was very puffy at first, but has flattened down (this could have more of an impact to tallness of shoe than I realize). I found the thick sole that comes with size 8 and above to be surprisingly thick. The sole is thicker than the sole on my adult sport ballet flats. I can't attest to what the wear and tear might be - I'm sure the elves made the thick sole decision due to results, but if it were available I would ask for the thinner sole for my little girl who may not be as hard on shoes as older children or some little boys. Her cousin who is 5 months older would fit in the 7 which comes with thinner soles, so my recommendation would be to consider offering either thickness in the transition sizes at least. Easter Shoes! Review by sd112b
I bought this shoe in white with white laces and the sheepskin lining for my 20-month old toddler son for Easter. He looked SO adorable and we got so many compliments! People at our church could hardly believe they were made in the USA. (Posted on 4/21/16)
Expected better quality Review by 3baldini
Those are super cute! However, I have 2 problems with it: my 1 year old can easily take them off even when the shoe lace is tight...I mean having it any tighter will cut the blood circulation off. So I don't know what else I can do to keep the shoes ON! Second problem, the coloring. My kid's white socks were orange.
Otherwise cute design!

Note from Elves: Thanks 3baldini for your review and sorry these are not working well :-(. This lace style can be challenging to keep on younger children and we would love for you to try other closures. For dye transfer, this unfortunately occurs for brighter colors and although it is a food grade dye - it is not great with white socks for first couple weeks. Alternatives to "set" the brighter dyes meant introducing chemicals to the leather, which is why we did not go this route. Please contact our Customer service elves w.r.t. a velcro closure or elastic closure if interested down the road - We would like you to have a better experience with a different style. Cute but don't stay on! Review by Emma
I am having trouble keeping these shoes on my daughter's feet.

Note from the Elves: Hi Emma - Please give the elves a call to see if we can help problem solve. If they are too big, perhaps we can add a sheepskin innersole until she grows in? If instead it is the lace closure, it may be the Classic with Velcro strap might be a better option for her. (Posted on 3/18/16)
High quality, low traction Review by Wenslo
I'm really surprised no one else has complained about the poor traction on the soles of these shoes. I bought them for my daughter and thought they were cute and great quality but after she repeatedly slipped and fell while wearing them indoors I had to be careful when I let her wear them. I would love to see a flexible sole with better traction.

Happy feet Review by boo
I bought these for my 21 month old as most shoes here in the UK had been too stiff or too narrow and to ship them was equivalent to the cost of a regular branded leather shoe here. They are lovely! The leather has melded to the shape of her foot. She stomps her feet a lot now,you can tell she can feel the ground beneath. The simple design is really cute and the laces keep them securely on. Happy girl , happy mum , happy feet! (Posted on 1/26/16)
Lightweight Review by Amberli
These shoe are great. Got them for my 17 month old daughter, this is our second pair. I have to say a lot of other baby shoe are heavy, which doesn't make any sense to me. There are light and very easy for my daughter to walk in. I'm very pleased. (Posted on 1/23/16)
We just keep buying them bigger! Review by Cathie
Have always loved Soft Star. For a while, we bought the velcro ones, but now I buy them with laces (for the price) and sew 1/4" elastic through the holes to make them slip-ons! My twins are 4.5 years old, and they're on their sixth pair, each. (Posted on 12/7/15)
nice shoes Review by Jul E
Nice shoes for our soon to be 18 month old son. He loves them, especially the laces, because mommy and daddy have shoelaces too. I do wonder of they will be warm enough in winter though. We'll see. (Posted on 10/22/15)
lovely shoes Review by morri
These are lovely shoes. I bought them originally as a replacement for her worn out(sole only) mocs, as the forests trails wear and tear proved too much for them. but I realized that these ones are not the best for sunny days at autumn winter as the opening at the side it too deep. (my daughter has high arches and the opening at the side is at the same height as her arch top so they are like sandals with closed toes basically. We do love them nevertheless and wear them for normal street shoes instead of play(school) shoes.

Adorable! Review by Augie
I recently bought a size 6 for my 1-year-old son. They are so adorable, even his grandparents remarked how cute they are. He has only had them for 2 weeks so I cannot say anything about wear and tear. However, they appear VERY well-made and fit him perfectly. I am also so proud that these shoes are made in the USA. excellent shoes Review by Arlene
We bought our daughter these in blue and LOVE them. We get compliments every time she wears them, and they're as flexible as promised. I feel good having her growing feet in a shoe that gives her such a natural movement. Off to buy the next size up. (Posted on 9/29/15)
Great shoes. Review by Another driftless Mom
When I ordered these, school was starting in just a few days and Soft Star got them out to me super fast - GREAT service! They are everything I wanted - a good sole that allows for barefoot motion of the foot, with laces to perfect the art of tying, and an awesome price. They are ALSO everything my daughter wanted - pretty, cozy wool on this inside, and great for running and climbing. I ordered these with the leather laces, which seem to be a bit more challenging for her to learn to tie, and that has slowed her down a bit during in/out transitions at school, but once she gets it down she'll be a master shoe-tier. :) Originally I ordered these for outdoor use, but then realized that the top has a lot more openings (due to the design to accommodate shoe laces) which can allow for debris to fall into the shoes, so I decided to keep these for inside use. Since her school has her wear a set of inside shoes and a different set of outside shoes, it was easy for me to make that adjustment. :) (Posted on 9/23/15)
Beautiful, reliable, durable Review by Ali
We have two pairs of these in the green and red. We also have a purple that is a size too big for the next few months. I really do love these but am reviewing for the purpose of helping any other Aussies out. I had difficulty interpreting the size guide and ordered the larger size the first time around. My daughter is a size AU 8 and fits into the 9 in these perfectly.
Really can't recommend these enough. (Posted on 8/25/15)
Cute and Comfy Review by MorAvFire
Not only are these shoes adorable on.... they give you the feeling of times gone by when children wore sweet little handmade shoes and not mass produced tennis shoes etc. But, they are also very comfortable. The kids have not taken them off since we received them. By following the updated sizing chart the shoes fit perfectly. Do not be alarmed if they seem a bit snug the first few days, they settle in wonderfully and fit just as they were promised to. (Posted on 8/13/15)
Fabulous! Review by Victoria
I bought these for my daughter after being frustrated with 'conventional' shoes. Even the ones advertised as flexible still had pointed toes, arch support etc. The sole on her Soft stars is incredibly flexible, the leather is butterfly soft, and they are adorable! I was worried about the laces digging into her skin but we have not had that issue! The leather is almost water resistent so she can wear these on wet days instead of big, clunky hard rain boots! People are always saying how comfy the shoes look, and how sweet they look too! Very happy I found this company. It's almost time to order the next size up! (Posted on 6/26/14)
Beautiful shoes! Review by Rebecca
Very well made and just what I wanted! Cannot wait to give these to my son for his first birthday! We did try them on already and they fit great! I came back today to order a pair or each of my other kids. :) (Posted on 5/7/14)
A hit wherever we go! Review by Erika
Both of my kids (ages 1.5 and 4.5) adore their shoes, and were especially excited to pick their favorite colors. Watching them climb and run, I can see how their feet and toes move the way nature intended, and my older son's complaints of leg muscle aches at night seem to have decreased since switching to soft star shoes.
The only thing I would improve would be longer laces for kids size 11 and up -- the laces are the perfect length for my youngest's size 7 shoe, but a little short to tie my eldest's in a double knot.
I would also love if we could pick our own colors for the Velcro version like we can for the ties.

Note from Soft Star Elves:
Hi Erika - please drop us a note or ring - we would be happy to send you longer laces, no charge! Also, you can Design Your Own Classic with Velcro - we would be happy to help you with this, as well. Thanks for the review! (Posted on 4/14/14)
They will last until they are outgrown. Review by Missy
We have 3 Soft Stars (2 sandals & 1 shoe) in our family and I am ready to purchase another. We get constant compliments and questions of where we bought them, which I love to pass along. Hooray for made in the USA! The children love to design their own shoes and make it a point when telling others. It's artwork you wear on your feet! (Posted on 10/13/13)
Love These! Review by J.
This is the 2nd pair of these shoes I have ordered for my daughter. They are so well made and so cute ... I wish that they made them in my size! (Posted on 3/12/13)
Great little boy shoe! Review by Megi and Sam
I was a little worried these weren't going to look "boyish" enough on my son but once I put them on they looked so adorable, like a little old fashioned boy. He was angry at first that I made him take off his sandals, but once he stomped around the house in his new shoes he was so pleased I couldn't coax them off of him at bedtime. I almost can't wait for him to outgrow them so I can get him a pair in another color. (Posted on 11/1/12)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
