We love innovation. But in some cases, the best way to move forward, is to take a step back. The Roo moccasin is footwear uninvented. Made with natural materials that are high in quality and few in number, these shoes are built to let the wearer fully experience the world underfoot.

Suede Royal and Turquoise blue uppers wrap the foot in rich, breathable leather. The traditional suede soles are flexible and soft, well-suited to both indoor and dry outdoor use. Suede is naturally durable and initially non-skid, wearing into a smoother, moisture-resistant surface over time; don’t worry, you can always restore the soles’ non-skid properties by gently rubbing the sole with a wire brush!

Inside the shoe, luxurious sheepskin innersoles keep your child’s feet protected, dry, and oh-so-comfortable. Genuine sheepskin is nature's heat regulator—it keeps feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter! Inner elastic hugs the ankle for a secure fit that’s easy on, easy off…that is, if they ever decide to take them off!

  • Genuine sheepskin innersoles keep feet dry in summer & warm in winter while providing comfort and cushioning
  • Indoor / dry outdoor shoe
  • Elastic ankle closure—easy on and off
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Designed and handcrafted in Oregon, USA

Sizing note: Moccasins in our Child category range from size 4–12. The next size up is Youth Size 1, which you can find in our Youth Shoes category. You can also find a smaller size in our Baby Shoes category.

Best toddler slipper Review by Rebecca

My 1.5 year old son has gotten so many compliments on these. They don't fall off, he can't pull them off, and no need for socks because of the sheep skin lining. Also this color combo is so bright. Love. (Posted on 11/26/16)
Great Shoes! Review by Jennifer

I have just purchased my third pair of these kid's shoes (rambler this time as I anticipate a new winter walker!) and I am sure those won't be the last. I love that these shoes are so good for little feet, and they stay on well and provide just enough traction for those curious toes! My little one (11 months now) wears these all the time, and he is able to navigate well with such great ground feel. I like them so much I even bought myself a pair of roos! (Posted on 11/8/16)

This is probably our 20th pair of Soft Stars we have bought! I have four children that wear Soft Stars and my husband and I both wear Soft Stars also. The Child Roo Moccasin is great for my "just starting to walk" baby. He wears them daily and they don't interfere with his ability to scoot about and when he attempts to walk, they are great too. He seems more confident and I think it is because he can feel the ground beneath his little growing feet! Thanks again Soft Star! You rock! (Posted on 11/3/16)
Great Montessori indoor shoes Review by Braxton Mom

Shipping was super fast. Tracking was easy and overall the shoe is awesome. My son goes to a Montessori school and is required to wear indoor soft sole slippers for 8 hrs of the day and they have held up (reminder he is 3 years old) so he does a lot of running and jumping and overall toddler activities. No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
  5.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Which style is best for your child?

Use our handy chart below to compare our child shoe styles and find the best fit for your needs. Remember that all Softstar shoes are made from soft, eco-friendly leather and lightweight, flexible soles for healthy foot development. For children in particular, this is important as the bones in their feet are still forming and not fully ossified until ages 9-11.  We believe shoes should provide protection from the elements while doing their best to simulate barefoot conditions.

Care Tips for Suede Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede protector leathercare product. While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any suede shoes - it will mat the fibers, and will break down the adhesive bond in soling on styles that have bonded soles.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
