The Roo, our most popular style moccasin, is made with high quality suede uppers and our strong suede sole. The entire shoe is soft and flexible to allow natural foot movement and development. Inside, you will find genuine sheepskin innersoles that keep the foot protected, dry and comfortable. Sheepskin is nature's heat regulator—it keeps feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter. Inner elastic hugs the ankle, making the shoe easy to slip on and stay on!

These moccasins are made with traditional suede soles that are flexible and soft. This sole works well both indoors and outdoors (when dry outside) with a thick leather layer for protection and is our most popular style. Suede is naturally durable and non-skid. Over time this soft leather sole will lovingly wear into a smoother, water-resistant surface.

Sizing note: Moccasins in our child shoe category range from size 4–12. The next size up is Youth Size 1, which you can find in our Youth Shoes category. You can also find a smaller size in our Baby Shoes category.

Perfect Baby/Toddler Shoe Review by Crystal

I bought Suede Roos for my son as his first walking shoe and I'd do it again! He walked early (9.5 months old) and I bought these at 10.5 months. He didn't need to learn to walk in them, it was as natural as barefoot. I tried many other mainstream shoes and they couldn't compare, they were just so difficult for a new walker. Not to mention how cute these are - everyone raves over them! Plus, I was able to buy a size bigger so that they would last me longer without affecting his ability to walk in them. He's been in them 9 months and they fit perfectly right now, so I'm going to order a new pair two sizes bigger and do the same. I LOVE them.

I should also mention that we let him wear them in mud, snow, rain, puddle jumping... You name it. And they are still going strong despite being suede! (Posted on 7/8/13)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
  5.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Which style is best for your child?

Use our handy chart below to compare our child shoe styles and find the best fit for your needs. Remember that all Softstar shoes are made from soft, eco-friendly leather and lightweight, flexible soles for healthy foot development. For children in particular, this is important as the bones in their feet are still forming and not fully ossified until ages 9-11.  We believe shoes should provide protection from the elements while doing their best to simulate barefoot conditions.

Care Tips for Suede Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but please do not wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin!

If your shoes are a little snug at first across the top of the toes, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe (don't worry, you won't hurt it). Let the stuffing sit in the shoes overnight to stretch the leather.

MAINTENANCE:

Use a suede brush to remove dirt. You can also choose to use a suede protector leathercare product. While not necessary, it will help keep your shoes looking new over time. Do not use generic leather care products on suede, but only those specifically formulated for suede. Products for full grain or smooth leather will be too oily and may permanently darken and mat suede fibers. Please do not use mink oil on any suede shoes - it will mat the fibers, and will break down the adhesive bond in soling on styles that have bonded soles.

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product because it will strip the leather of it's natural oils and cause it to dry stiffer. When a suede brush is not enough, you can use a damp cloth or hand wash your suede shoes with a gentle shampoo and cool water, then let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results—just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Be sure to give your wet shoes ample time to air dry. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying process by stuffing them with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
