dye keeps leaking. Review by Hannah
Rating
Great shoe, but the dye keeps leaking onto the socks and then onto the skin. Food dyes have been linked to ADHD and all sorts of problems, so its not something I'm comfortable seeing on my kid's skin. I wish they had a no-dye option, at least on the inside.
Note from the Elves: Thanks Hannah for the review. We rarely hear of dye issues with the leather we use on the Classic , even in rainy/wet environments, so we were surprised by your comment and would like to learn more. We don't have a way to respond to you via the review as it was submitted anonymously, but if you read this, please get in touch with us so we can help troubleshoot. Thanks! (Posted on 10/20/17)
These shoes are AMAZING! Review by Kendra

We've been struggling finding shoes for our 16 month son that protect his feet, but aren't super rigid. My mother-in-law said that she bought these shoes for my husband when he was little, so we got a pair, and we LOVE them. Super-soft, flexible, and really cute. Our son gets so excited to "go bye bye" and will bring us his shoes before we go anywhere. <3 (Posted on 9/14/17)
Love the soft leather and the Velcro strap Review by Lana-Jason

I love the Velco strap. It's so easy to get on and off. Our son has chubby baby feet and these took no effort in getting his foot in the shoe. The leather is the softest and is so flexible. I love knowing that he is wearing protective, stable shoes that are good for his feet's development. Being made in the PNW is even better. We love visiting the shop when we are able but the online purchase is quick and easy as well.

We will be ordering our next size up soon. Our son (17 months) will be wearing Softstars well into school years. I am a huge fan! (Posted on 8/5/17)
Love these shoes! Review by AMLwalker

My husband is a physical therapist and is very particular about the shoes our 2.5 year old son wears. It is really disappointing that there are so few soft sole shoes on the market so we were thrilled when we found these. I actually had to return the first pair we purchased because they ended up being too small. I followed the measurement guidelines so I was surprised when they didn't fit, but the return/exchange process was very simple and fairly quick considering each shoe is made to order. Now these are the only shoes our son wears! He calls them his "twinkle little stars." (Posted on 6/5/17)
The Only Solution! Review by Schurthing

My (now 2.5 year old) son never fit into conventional shoes. Even the widest stride rite styles were too narrow! When he began walking, I embarked on an exhaustive search for shoes that would fit and came up empty handed. After a halfway decent attempt at making a pair at home and many barefoot escapades, I found Soft Star. This was the answer! My husband had grown up hating to wear shoes, and never knew that he simply needed double wide shoes until he became an adult. Thanks to these versatile and durable shoes (we are on our third pair now) my son won't have to go through that pain. We recently had another boy, and one of the first comments our midwife made was "Wow, he has short, wide feet!" We are well prepared, as as the shoes are definitely in a good condition to be able to be passed down. (Posted on 3/5/17)

My 18 month son loves to be barefoot and play outside, as fall approached I started to worry that we would have a hard time finding shoes comfortable enough for him that would protect his feet but he loves these shoes!
He wears them most of the day and doesn't have any problems walking in them (no tripping or balance issues).
Also, sometimes at daycare he comes home without socks on but the shoes have never rubbed his skin raw or given him blisters like some other shoes we've tried. Very well designed shoe, highly recommended! (Posted on 9/24/16)

My son has wide feet and we couldn't find a suitable pair of shoes for him to learn to walk in that are nontoxic. These were the answer! They are very flexible and well-constructed. We are now on our second pair and also own the Ramblers. Thank you, Soft Star! (Posted on 9/5/16)
Great flexible sturdy shoe! Review by Meri

I spent a long time looking for (and sending back) shoes for our one-and-a-half that had really flexible soles so that his gait didn't become stompy and moon-walky. I am so excited about these shoes! They're so flexible and sturdy, and easy to put on and take off of a squirmy and/or sleepy wee one. He's worn them every day for two months of hard playing and they've shown just the tiniest scuffing on one of the toes. I had thought when we first put them on that they might be too wide but he had no problem running around in them right away and now his feet have made perfect homes out of them. I'll keep ordering bigger ones until he won't have it any more. Thank you so much for such a high quality product. (Posted on 8/26/16)

This was our son's first pair of shoes which we got for him when he first started walking around 13mo.

Not only did they allow him to learn to stand, walk, and function as intended, he absolutely loves them. The sizing chart on the website was helpful, too. He's now 18mo and we are buying him another pair as the toe box is cramped when he wears socks.

Can't recommend these enough. Great quality. (Posted on 11/30/14)

My son refused to wear shoes until he was nearly two. I searched everywhere for something flexible and easy to get on and I'm so glad I found these shoes. We both love them so much that we've bough new pairs every time he grows out of the old ones. We've gone through four pairs so far and each time they've been in good enough condition to pass on to a friend when we're done. They're so sturdy that single pairs are passed on multiple times without any holes or issues. (Posted on 8/2/14)

My 2 year old son has had these shoes for three months. He absolutely loves them. He loves running in them. He is hard on shoes and these have held up well. Next time we will probably get the thicker soles because it is wearing a bit already and the star is falling out of one of the shoes. Overall we are extremely happy with them and will buy another pair when he needs them. (Posted on 6/12/14)

My shoe-hating, 22-month-old boy finally has a pair of shoes he doesn't rip off the second they are put on his feet. I have to admit that I had my doubts that these would be sturdy enough for outdoor play. Being such soft leather I thought my son would tear them up right away. I am happy to report that he has worn them for a week straight to daycare and they have survived the entire week on the playground with absolutely no damage! Not a scratch on them! He drags them through wood chips and trips and falls on cement. He skins his knees but the shoes are unscathed! I am impressed. This is our first pair and we will be back for more. The best part is, he can put them on by himself! This is the first pair he has ever been able to put on without my help, which is a HUGE accomplishment for him as he likes to do everything himself. Thanks, Soft Star! (Posted on 5/10/14)

Unsure about your child's size? Our printable guide will help you find the best fit for your feet! Just click the button below to print the guide and follow the instructions on the page (if you don't have access to a printer then scroll down for another option).

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure your child's feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where the measurements fall on our sizing chart to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
    • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
    • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.
  5.

Once you find the length measurement, you can use table below to best find the corresponding size. Keep the following points in mind:

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Which style is best for your child?

Use our handy chart below to compare our child shoe styles and find the best fit for your needs. Remember that all Softstar shoes are made from soft, eco-friendly leather and lightweight, flexible soles for healthy foot development. For children in particular, this is important as the bones in their feet are still forming and not fully ossified until ages 9-11.  We believe shoes should provide protection from the elements while doing their best to mimic barefoot conditions.

Description Soft and flexible all around. A cozy slip-on moccasin that allows feet to move and spread naturally. Similar to our Roo moccasin, but with a rubber sole for better durability on the playground. The first shoe made by Softstar in 1985, and still a family favorite! Upper is made from a single piece of leather stretched around the shoe for a classy fitted design. A traditional mary jane style shoe with adjustable buckle strap and stylish scallop trim. Based on our Classic design, but with an open toe and heel to keep feet cool on hot days.. Based on our Classic design, but with laces along the side and a genuine sheepskin cuff.
Best Use

Perfect for first walkers with flexibility for early foot development. Cozy to wear around the house and preferred by schools that require soft-soled classroom shoes. Also good for light outdoor play.

A more durable version of our Roo moccasin. Still a good first walker shoe and great for rough outdoor play. Also acceptable for schools that require soft classroom shoes.

Great for outdoor play, but can also work for formal occasions with the right colors. A popular winter shoe, as the “closed” design helps keep out water, snow and debris. Adding sheepskin innersoles provides extra warmth on cold days.

Great for outdoor play or for dressier formal occasions.

Keeps kids cool on hot days! Open toe and heel not only provide ventilation, but also give a little more growing room before you need to size up.

Great for keeping feet warm on chilly days! Cuff can be worn down as a winter shoe, or pulled up around the lower calves like a boot.

Leather Uppers

Choose from Suede leather or Smooth Sublime* leather (a slightly softer, more felxible version of our Nova leather). Suede feels cozier, Sublime is easier to clean.

"My child has thick and/or wide feet. Will these work?" YES! Wide width options are available, and this flexible shoe stretches well to adapt to big feet. Elastic can also be adjusted after shoe is made if more ankle room is needed.
YES! Wide width options are available, and this shoe will stretch a little to adapt to big feet. Elastic can also be adjusted after shoe is made if more ankle room is needed.

Fitted design is not as accommodating to extra wide feet as our other styles, but wide width options are available. Laces or Velcro closure are recommended to allow most ankle room.

YES! Wide width options are available. This shoe's open front and adjustable strap allow this shoe to easily accommodate large or tall insteps.

Wide width option with laces or Velcro work well for most wide feet... better than the Classic, but not as roomy as a wide Roo or Rambler.

Fitted design is not as accommodating to extra wide feet as our other styles. Wide widths are available, but not with the fully lined* option (it is already made wide to account for the extra layer of sheepskin).

Softstar Soles Explained

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
