We know that nothing beats a moccasin for barefoot comfort. Unfortunately, the gentle, peaceful moccasin has some natural enemies: wet weather, jagged terrain…rough-asphalted playgrounds. So which do you choose: comfort, or resilience?

Trick question—no choice necessary! We’ve designed the Rambler to provide both durable soling AND the cozy fit of your child’s favorite moccasins. This shoe features a flexible, stitched-on Vibram sole that resists water, debris, and other unpredictable obstacles of first-steps walkers. Elastic concealed in the ankle seam secures the shoe to the foot while enabling the wearer to slip it on and off with ease. Our animal-free tan and royal blue ultrasuede is easy to wash and allows a comfy moccasin fit. Ramble on, comfort-lovers, ramble on!

Baby's feet typically grow through 4 sizes in the first year. (Size 1 for the first month, size 2 for months 2-4,  size 3 for months 4-9ish, size 4 for months 6 -12ish.)  Of course this will vary by each baby, but foot growth usually slows down considerably after the first year. As babies are not mobile those first few months, we generally do not stock shoes in size 1 or 2, although we can certainly make them for you by special request if needed for a special occasion or for a baby with extremely small feet.

Find Your Baby's Size!

You can measure your child's feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your child's feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your child's bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Move your child's foot away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Look for your measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

  • Wiggle/growing room is already taken into account.
  • If your child is on the border between two sizes then we recommend the larger size.

SANDAL SIZING: Our child sandals tend to run big since they are open-toed and open-heeled.We recommend ordering one size smaller than the recommended size for sandals.

BOOT SIZING: Boots tend to run small due to sheepskin lining and (often) thicker socks. It is usually safe to go up at least one size when buying Soft Star boots for your child.  The North Star is a more "fitted" style, so order a wide if you plan to wear with thick socks or if you want a roomy fit.

MOCCASIN NOTES: The good thing about soft, moccasin-style shoes (like the Roo or Viley) is that extra length is generally not a problem, so you can often buy with growing room. Your child's foot will slide right to the front of our moccasins and the excess length will be in the back behind their ankle—no worries about tripping over extra length at the toe. Think of it like a glove for their feet. The moc style shoe is very forgiving if too big, which is a good thing if you are on a budget.

If your child has thick or chubby feet, be sure to indicate you need a wide width. If your child has EXTRA wide feet, please read this.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method (especially when measuring squirmy children) then you may want to try our printable size guides. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print these guides, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Which Style is Best for My Baby?

We believe that babies should be barefoot or with loose fitting socks as much as possible to promote healthy development of their feet. However, for those days you need warmth or protection - here are some notes on our styles you may find helpful:

Overall Warmth

Woolie booties fit the bill nicely for those first few months thru 1 year. The woolies will look ridculously enormous on a newborn - but can be snugged over their outfit and warm socks and will not fall off - providing a roomy, warm outerlayer. Woolies also work great to slip on little feet once asleep at night - you can open them wide to slip on, and then gently snug shut without waking baby.

Once your baby is old enough to pull off their socks and you need a way to keep their feet warm - we suggest the buttercup mocs. These are super soft , easy to pull on - and provide plenty of wiggle room for their toes. The gentle elastic around the ankle keeps socks and shoes on.

Crawling & Walking

And when your baby becomes mobile - either crawling great distances or walking - our favorites are the classic Roo moccasins. This style is a bit more durable than the Buttercup mocs and has more protective sole designed for walking in public spaces (good in most conditions except when wet). The Roo has been a customer favorite for 26 years. It's thicker leather makes it a little harder to slip on than a Buttercup moccasin, but will be very protective and durable. Many think you must have a rubber soled shoe once your child starts walking outside - but in fact, if you can keep your baby in protective "foot gloves" like the Roo - they will find it easier to walk as they can grip with their toes - and it is more optimal for their balance and bone development. Our Roo moccasins differ from most other crib shoes, like Robeez, in that they have a much thicker leather sole for outdoor wear and have a soft innersole of sheepskin to keep baby from feeling an "ouch" when they walk on gravel or a sharp toy.

Summer Protection

Too hot outside for mocs? Try our beautiful sandals with soft boarskin soles for those summer days when your baby needs protection from the hot pavement. Boarskin soles are amazingly tough and actually more protective than a rubber sole - yet they flex and form to baby's foot to make an ideal sole for a little one. Plus, they are unique and absolutely adorable!

Cute, cute, cute!

Finally - our all time most beautiful and fun baby shoe is the lil' Doggie cowboy booties - as comfortable as a moc! Not only are they darn cute - they stay put and once you snug baby's pants underneath, they double function as leg-warmers to keep baby warm. These are certain to be Keepsakes to be handed down to the next generation.

Care Tips for Vegan Shoes

Softstar vegan shoes are made from Sherpasuede or Ultrasuede™ synthetic leather. All are very durable, made from recycled materials and are machine washable. Yes, that's right—you can throw your shoes in the washer whenever needed. We recommend air drying them, but if you have a drying rack that inserts in your dryer, then you can use it on light heat.
