We love innovation. But in some cases, the best way to move forward, is to take a step back. The Roo moccasin is footwear uninvented. Made with natural materials that are high in quality and few in number, these shoes are built to let you fully experience the world through which you move.

Smooth Chocolate and Terracotta uppers wrap your foot in rich, breathable leather. The traditional suede soles are flexible and soft, well-suited to both indoor and dry outdoor use. Suede is naturally durable and initially non-skid, wearing into a smoother, moisture-resistant surface over time. Don’t worry, you can always restore the soles’ non-skid properties by gently rubbing the sole with a wire brush!

Inside the shoe, luxurious sheepskin innersoles embrace your feet and keep them protected, dry, and oh-so-comfortable. Genuine sheepskin is nature's heat regulator—it keeps feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter! Inner elastic hugs the ankle for a secure fit that’s easy on, easy off…that is, if you ever decide to take them off!

  • Genuine sheepskin innersoles keep feet dry in summer & warm in winter while providing comfort and cushioning
  • Indoor / dry outdoor shoe
  • Elastic ankle closure—easy on and off
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Handcrafted in USA from premium, responsibly-sourced leathers

These moccasins are great. I got them to wear as slippers in my house. They are comfortable and flexible - exactly what I needed. (Posted on 4/19/16)

I have a pair of moccasins bought in 2011 and I love them. I bought these for my husband last spring in size 11W. They are too narrow, even narrower than his 11W dress shoes. They're just as wide as my size 7 mocasins which are regular width. How is a man of size 11 wide supposed to have feet just as wide as a woman of size 7 regular? As another commenter said: Please bring back the old shape and size. I understand that you're making your shoes fit like commercial shoes in order to sell more, but as a result you're losing customers who are more interested in an anatomically correct shoe than in the appearance of the shoe.

Note from Soft Star Shoes: We are sorry the fit did not work well for your husband. We do cut all our soles with dies, and the 11 Wide should be a great deal wider than your size 7 mocs. Please contact our customer service elves - we would be happy to send you a return shipping label to see what is going on with this pair for you and get you into shoes that will work well. I have to say these shoes are so comfortable that I don't want to take them off. I wear a women's 10.5 wide in a conventional shoe and these in a 9 wide fit like a dream. I've never been a fan of wearing shoes on my feet or even socks for that matter, but these are a joy to wear. Love them! (Posted on 12/20/14)

I just wanted to comment on how my roos are holding up after about 11 months. I have worn them probably about four days a week during those 11 months (during the summer it was a little less, I wore huarache sandals that were cooler). I have run in them quite a bit, and they are holding up really well. The soles are still great. They are showing a little sign of wear around the edges and toes, but they look like they'll live for another year. Good quality. (Posted on 10/8/14)

I got my Roos in January 2014. It was so nice to slip them on. I almost just barely felt they were a tiny bit too tight, but not enough to go to another size. And I could easily spread, I'd just thought they'd be looser. They did loosen up nicely - maybe within a week or so - of daily wearing. They are black suede and look nice and professional enough with my pants - when I'm standing. I don't wear skirts much in winter. Most importantly they feel great! The sheepskin inner, the roominess, the now smooth suede soles. I wore them only inside because it snowed like crazy this winter and I didn't want the new suede soles to get wet. I should say the black dye came off on my feet at first, but they were so comfortable and looked so nice that I wouldn't let that bother me - the elves mentioned that might happen. AND it wiped off easy with lotion AND it slowed to nothing after 3 or 4 weeks. I will be buying more Roos - if these ever wear out. (Posted on 6/7/14)

These are the most comfortable shoes I've owned. The sheep skin inner is luxurious. The shoe conforms to the shape of your foot and allows full natural movement, it's like the foot is wrapped comfortably rather than being encased in a hard, inflexible shoe.
Yes it was a little tight around the toes at first, but I was patient, and within a couple of days it had stretched and become perfectly comfortable.
I bought these shoes through my interest in grounding / earthing and barefoot walking. It's rare to find shoes that are minimalist and grounding and so comfortable, so I really appreciate these. I wear them most of the time now, except for work and more formal occasions, for which I've just ordered the RunAmoc. I don't want to go back to "normal" hard soled shoes now.

I live in Australia, so I've brought the roo back home! For those of you worried about kangaroo leather, it's actually quite a good choice. There's no farming or land clearing or caging up of animals involved. Very environmentally friendly. Sadly, lots of kangaroos are culled in Australia because apparently they are overpopulated in rural areas and are a pest. But most of these are not even eaten or used. If they're going to be culled, we should at least be using them for something.

Note from Soft Star: Thanks BP for your feedback! We want to clarify that we do not use kangaroo leather. "Roo" is named after one of the nicknames of our very first baby elf.. .from way back in 1985. The leather used in the Roo is cowhide from US tanneries. Sorry for any confusion! (Posted on 5/30/14)

I have been wearing my Adult Roo Moccasins since I got them four days ago. They are my first SSS shoes. They are the best thing that ever happened to my feet. I can't put any other shoe on. Today I have worn them to work even though they do not look professional. I brought some "nicer" looking shoes but I can't bare to change. I guess I'll have to buy some of the mary janes so I can have this comfort without looking funny at work. (Note, they only look funny with the dress I'm wearing because it is dressier... I have been wearing them with pants and they don't look bad at all.)

The sheepskin insoles are luxurious. I like that I can feel the ground through the suede sole. It is cold right now, and when I walk outside I can feel the cold ground through the shoes, but my feet do not get cold! How is that possible?

I would recommend these to everybody. My feet are no longer squashed, my legs and back don't hurt after work anymore. I have an office job but I try to stand several hours each day. When I wear my boots or any other shoe with a little heel my feet and legs hurt at the end of the day, and I can't wait to take them off. With the roos, I take them off RIGHT before I go to bed. If I were a child I would totally sleep with them on.

The end. (Posted on 12/4/13)
Poor fit for Men's size 11 - tight in the toesReview by mhc

I have a pair of these moccassins from a few years ago that fit perfectly out of the box. They were the previous size 10U, and I wear 10.5 street shoe. My wife ordered a new pair as a gift in Nov2013, and with the change in cut/shape and sizing, I could not find a pair that fit. The 11U regular and wide width both squeezed my toes uncomfortably and were tight in width. The length was ok. I have narrow feet so I do not understand how these would fit a guy with a regular or wide foot. The moccasin shape is pointed in the toes so there is no room for your toes to spread. SS said they would stretch, but I am not willing to wear uncomfortable slippers so returned them. The quality and construction is 5 stars, fit is 1 star since I cannot replace what I have. Please bring back the previous shape &size with more room in the toes. (Posted on 12/4/13)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  • 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  • 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  • 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  • 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots, Portlanders and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Care

Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes

WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:

Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

MAINTENANCE:

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

WASHING:

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
