After reading Born to Run about four years ago, I began to wonder if I couldn't fix my horribly painful feet by changing my shoes and habits. I am a former ballerina with pointe shoe PTSD, in the form of hallux rigidus (stiff big toe) and arthritis in my toes and the ball of my foot. Each of my toes has been broken countless times, among other things you don't want to hear about (you saw Black Swan, right?).
Just a few years ago, I could not bend my big toe at all. The arthritis in my feet began to flare up in my mid-20s and had become nearly unbearable by the time I reached early 30s. There were days when every step on the street brought tears to my eyes.
I tried lots of things that didn't work: various podiatrists, all of whom prescribed various kinds of inserts and shoes with a stiff forefoot and stiff soles. They thought that preventing my big toe area from bending would prevent pain. All of it just made things worse. It would be too depressing to add up exactly what I spent on shoes and inserts, but it was easily over $1,000, no question.
I read Born to Run and was agog. It gave me hope that self-healing my feet might be possible. I started with Vibram Five Fingers, which I felt foolish wearing, and found Soft Star when looking for U.S. made shoes. My "gateway shoe" was a leather Adult Dash Runamoc in SF Giants orange and brown, on sale in case it didn't go well. I also started working to mobilize my stiff feet, Kelly Starrett Mobility style.
Well, I'm still wearing those sale shoes (they barely look worn), have two pairs of Merry Janes, and just ordered a fourth pair DYO Adult Original Runamocs today (in Moss, Watermelon and Chocolate suede - can't wait).
I really can't wear anything but Soft Star Shoes now. A few years after my first purchase, my feet are 100% pain free almost every day. My back pain and knee pain have also vanished. My toes are farther apart when I stand barefoot, I can bend my toes without using my hands (yep, just with my brain), and my feet no longer have such a pronounced "bunion like" appearance. My feet have gotten wider, which I only realized when I tried on older shoes: they'd become far too narrow and tight, especially in the toe box, when they used to fit fine. I've had to give them all away but who cares? They weren't any good for me anyway.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Soft Star. My feet are healed! (Posted on 1/9/14)
- Magical Shoes - They Shrunk My FeetReview by jinxdoll
The leather is soft like butter and there was no break in time. I've tried other American made shoes and they were horribly hard to break in, like three weeks before they were just right. I also looked at the soles expecting them to wear down as fast as the soles of my last shoes, but nothing so far. I can wear it at work.
I like wearing minimalist shoes and dislike socks most of the time and these are perfect. I'm also tempted to make a pair of TARDIS blue ones (I believe the ocean leather is the closest shade), but maybe when they have the design it yourself for the ballet flats.
And I promise next order I will triple check the address and make sure I get it right. (Posted on 11/24/13)

- Good Quality & Comfortable Casual ShoeReview by Juli
This isn't a con, but this is not an ultra formal shoe. It is mostly casual in appearance but it can be versatile depending on what you wear.
The sole is quite wide near the ball of the foot. It feels comfortable but some women may not like such a wide area if they want a more dressy appearance or if they want to have slim looking feet.
The leather rests on top of the big toes (literally on top of the toenails). I thought that might bother me but after wearing these for three weeks it doesn't. The leather is soft, so that is probably why it still feels comfortable.
Be aware that a toe bump can be seen on each shoe. For a comfortable, casual shoe that is ok.
I'd like to see black, tan, and a chocolate colored versions at this price. I would buy them.
The leather is excellent quality
The workmanship is great
The shoes are very comfortable
The sole has no lumps for an arch
The sole has a slight cushion to it, yet it is thin
A wide toe box allows toes to splay naturally
The burgundy color is a brownish-red (Posted on 2/22/13)

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.
Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.
To measure your feet:
- 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
- 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
- 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
- 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.
Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.
Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.
If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots, Portlanders and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.
Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes
WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE:
Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly, tanned in USA leathers. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. Because we use natural food-grade dyes in our leather, there will likely be some initial color transference to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp - this will decrease with use but please don't wear your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.
If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a slightly damp rag. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe - don't worry, you cannot hurt it! Let the shoes sit stuffed overnight to stretch.
The full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant. Clean as needed with water dampened rag and let air dry. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but take care to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Mink oil can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look - this can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).
You can use a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. We don't recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer.
We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results - just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding, and do NOT put shoes the dryer. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water - you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper 2x a day.
