Rogue Innersoles

Our genuine sheepskin is homeostatic and naturally wicks moisture to keep feet warm and dry. Sheepskin's natural wicking action pushes away moisture to keep feet dry in the summer and cozy in the winter. The natural loft of the sheep will form to the shape of your foot and pack down over time, so the fit may feel a bit snug with new sheep innersoles for the first few days. We recommend starting with the suede innersoles and then switch to the sheep after the shoes have broken-in for a comfortable fit.

like slippers all day Review by Virginia
I love these shoes. They are sturdy, and yet the softest leather imaginable. It is winter where I live, and, unless there is snow or it is very, very cold they are good to go. I feel like I am in bedroom slippers; make me feel like I am cheating! I started wearing zero drop shoes late last summer, and moved into minimal shoes with these. I am so happy. I had been misled and not very comfortable in shoes since I was about 7 (I am now 77). Thanks so much for these wonderful shoes. (Posted on 1/16/18)
Just love these! Review by sydney
This is my second pair of black but have six pairs total in colours that I dye from the "aged whiskey". Comfortable right out of the box. Feel delicious! (Posted on 1/2/18)
Comfortable in all weathers and conditions, Review by JSMR
I have five pairs of Rogues in black and am about to order a further two pairs. I have diabetes Type 2 and need to care for my feet. It is safest for me to wear them without socks. Rogues provide me with steadiness (my feet are flat on the ground) and comfort. I wear a pair a day, changing the insoles depending on the weather. I keep them polished with Kiwi Parade Gloss and they buff up well and look smart. Highly recommended. To illustrate how important Rogues are to me: as a pensioner on a limited income the cost of importing two pairs into the UK is high: there's the initial cost in US dollars, postage and then on arrival in UK, import duties and taxes making the overall total I have to pay just over £GB400 = UD$520 @ £1 = $1.30. It's worth it to me - I wear no other shoes inside or outside the house. (Posted on 12/30/17)
Comfortable and warm, but a little roomy for my narrow foot Review by Crystal
Overall, I am satisfied with this shoe. It's comfortable, warm, and I can slip it on easily with one hand while holding a baby with the other. I have narrow Roos and Mary Janes, but they do not make this shoe narrow. After consulting with the elves, I decided to go against the recommendation to size up. It fits well, and I am glad I didn't size up. I gave it 4 stars because it is still slightly roomy. (Posted on 11/15/17)
your feet will thank you Review by amy
Like you I read the reviews before investing in a Soft Star shoe. And I agree with everyone else; the company has good old fashioned service and the rogue, wow, it is so cozy! I have never spent this much for a pair of shoes yet, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. My feet notice and crave the SSS. If you choose food, people and environments that enable you to feel your best, than the rogue is for you! I agree with the advice to size up. Initially my big toes hit the top of the shoe. But because leather naturally lengthens, it soon offered the right amount of space for my feet. I will definitely buy another pair of SSS. FYI: I've been wearing them almost daily for several months. Nothing but regret Review by Chris
I regret buying these shoes, but I can't return them since I wore them a few days before I realized how much I disliked them. The only thing I liked about these shoes is the sheepskin liner, which really isn't even the shoe itself! I bought a set of Vibram Five Fingers and I wear those instead.

Note from the Elves: Thanks for your feedback Chris - we are sorry these were not what you were looking for. We value your input and would like to better understand what you disliked so we could either improve and/or help you find a style more to your liking. (Posted on 6/6/17)
Love Review by MB
I love these shoes so much. I bought these in preparation for my work shoes to give out (worn daily for about 3 years made me concerned). As any amount of arch support kills my feet, it was a long quest to find these shoes. I teach Art which involves a ton of standing and moving. Having not worn minimalist shoes prior to these, I will say that various part of my legs and feet hurt at first. Once my body adjusted, I couldn't get over these shoes. They have the comfort of wearing slippers or house shoes but acceptable to wear in public! My only complaint is that I actually found the sheepskin inserts to be painfully annoying. They feel so plush when I first put them in but after a few steps they started sliding up the back of the shoe. I see another reviewer loves them so maybe it's just me.
If you have never ordered from this company, take the plunge! Their customer service is amazing!

Note from the Elves: Thanks MB for the great review! If you decide to get a new pair - please request some tape for your sheepskin inserts - it will keep them from riding up under your heel. (Posted on 4/20/17)
Unfortunately Disappointed Review by Mary
I received a lot of help from the Elves when contemplating my order. The service is amazing. Definitely 5 starts for that.

I wasn't sure what to expect of the Rogue. I was looking for a minimalist shoe to wear during winter when I walk in the morning, and wanted something that would stand up to wet terrain. The Rogue was recommended so I went with it.

The reason I am disappointed is that the shoe is too big for me, and even with beeswax water proofing, my feet end up wet. It was a gamble.

Due to the cost to ship back to the US, and also the exchange rate (I live in Australia), I decided to keep them and do wear them often. They just feel a little sloppy because they are a little too big. The fit feels better with the sheep skin insert, so will look forward to using them when the weather is a little cooler.

Trekking about in slippers! Review by Janine M
These are my second pair of Rogues and fourth from the elves. I searched far and wide for an attractive moccasin like shoe. These are the best! I absolutely love them. (Posted on 12/7/16)
order TWO sizes up Review by Rose
There came last night, and though I followed the elves' advice and ordered a size up, I'll be exchanging them for another size up. Following the sizing guidelines, I should be a 10U, but I have three pairs of softstar shoes in 11U - Roo mocs, Solstice sandals, and ballerines. These are all comfortable except the ballerines, and I think the fact that those crunch my toes has to do with my arches collapsing - ballerines just aren't the right style for me. The 12U Rogues I received actually measure half an inch shorter in the sole that my comfortable 11U Roos. Not the end of the world, I realized it after I had tried them on and will be able to exchange them for 13U, but a little bit annoying, and I'm out the return shipping on shoes that were pricey to begin with. The sizing should be more consistent between styles. (Posted on 11/18/16)
Softstar saves my feet Review by Twinkletoes
I now have several pairs of Softstar shoes. So does my partner. I started with Runamuck lite and wide for the heat of summer. I love them. I have worn them everyday. My bunions which were so Painful that I could barely walk before I used these shoes. With the glove soft leather and flexible sole, I found myself enjoying putting them on and gradually found I could walk longer distances. I have thrown away arch supports and rigid shoes and can walk 2-3 miles a day. Get lots of positive comments about the colors too.
I moved to Mexico where streets are cobbles and made of stone. I decided to try the Rogues for the ease of pulling them on and the thicker sole.. I am completely happy with the look and comfort for the next season. Even tho they are not wide they fill well. They may run a bit smaller than the other style but the advice of the Elves was perfect.
!!! Amazing service from the Elves!!! Kind, patient helpful and gracious.

Great shoe Review by JeepGranny
I'm an addict. I bought a pair of Soft Star shoes and lived them so much I had to try other styles. These are less fashionable than some but have been my go to winter shoe. They slide off easily instead of tracking mud. Peek out from my jeans and slacks without fan fare and clean up nicely if the mud got deep. (Posted on 5/25/16)
Awesomeness Review by Max Powers
Have been wearing these for just about everything. Super comfortable with just enough cushioning for me as I'm transitioning to minimalist shoes (Moc3 are a bit more jarring, by comparison). Fit is true to size I'd say. (Posted on 5/8/16)
Pretty Awesome Review by Julian
I've been pondering why some people have difficulty getting these to last. I bought these and another model (the Portlander) and I completely stopped wearing ALL my other shoes since. It's been nearly 16 months solid including trips abroad. And no problems at all. They're amazing and comfortable. They wear really well and are pretty much still almost brand-new.

The stitching came a bit loose in the toes of the OTHER model (Portlander), but not in these. I'll gladly send those in for a FREE repair and pay the $5 shipping to get them back- SOO worth it.

Also, I've been wondering why some people wear them out so fast (months) and for other ppl they can last years. I've just come up with the obvious- some people are really hard on their possessions, whereas other really take care of them.

Also, we can't forget that people's bodies and feet are very different and the way they walk is just really hard on shoes. So, no flaws with Soft Stars that I can tell. I think some ppl just have the right combination of body/foot type and taking care of their belongings, and others just don't. (Posted on 1/8/16)
Haven't worn my other shoes since Review by liveinyourbody
Since receiving these new Soft Stars, I haven't worn my 'regular' shoes a single time. These are wonderful. Thank you so much. (Posted on 4/26/15)
We love ours Review by Ringo
I ordered a pair for my husband, an elementary school teacher who is on his feet all day, and he loves his Rogues. It's been over a year and he wears them a few times a week and wants a second pair so that he can keep a pair at each of the schools he works at.

I ordered myself a pair after seeing how happy he was with his. I want to wear these every day. They are like slippers. I'm also a teacher, and I also find these comfortable to wear all day. Poking out from under a pair of pants or nice jeans, the Rogues are sleek and casual-but-not-too-casual. I've had mine for a year and the soles are starting to wear thin, so I'm getting ready for my second pair. (Posted on 12/3/14)
Just what I've been looking for Review by Rachel
My job has me on my feet all day on concrete floors. The Rogue gives me that extra bit of cushion while preserving a barefoot feel. They are sooo comfortable! Thank you! (Posted on 5/6/14)
Wish they were offered in wide Review by cb
Nicely made. Comfortable. Started wearing Soft Stars because they were able to take care of my wide feet. Wish they offered these in a wide makeup. Not happy with the new sizing implemented in the last year, either. Next time I'll go up a size. If you have feet that fall within the bounds of the mass market, these are great. That's obviously the direction Soft Star has felt the need to go. (Posted on 2/5/14)
Not just for men! Review by Emily
I ordered a pair of these because I love my running shoes and wanted something similar that was a bit more water resistant for everyday shoes. As soon as I ordered I started to worry that these would be too manly, and also that the black would be awkwardly too gray, like the picture here. Turns out I didn't need to worry--they are perfect! Although I love the feminine cut of the merry janes, when I worry about puddles, these are just what I was wanting. I don't feel at all like I am wearing my husband's shoes. And black is black. Comfortable stylish shoe, but lacks durability Review by Nate
Out of the box, this shoe is stylish, comfortable, and extremely versatile. I use mine for work, outings around the town, occasional runs, and light duty trails. Unfortunately as with my other Softstars, they do not last as long as I would like. Within two months of purchase the stitching around the toe box had blown out, which I was fortunately able to repair myself. After four months the seam between the sole and toe box started to come apart, which was extremely difficult to repair and now I am left with a gapping hole. I love the fact that Softstars are handmade in the USA, but for the price they should at least last a year. (Posted on 12/23/13)

Find Your Size!

You can measure your feet at home using a book, a ruler and a wall. You can then see where the measurement fits on our charts below to find the recommended Softstar shoe size.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place your bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Printable Stand-On Size Guides

We recommend using the measuring method shown above for the most accurate sizing, but if you'd like a simpler method then you may want to try our printable size guide. Just print the guide below and follow the instructions on the page.

Note: before you print the guide, make sure your printer settings will not shrink or scale the page. Uncheck any boxes labeled "Fit to Printable Area" and/or set scaling options to "None."

Care Tips for Full Grain (smooth) Leather Shoes

Softstar Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Softstars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow or Nikwax Full Grain Waterproofing on smooth leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
