When the weather outside turns frightful, these boots are SO delightful! The Phoenix uppers are made of nothing but the softest leather and are fully-lined with genuine sheepskin to naturally wick away moisture for warm, dry feet. Unlike many other “sheepskin” boot makers who use shaved-off sheepskin glued to another textile, we use authentic sheepskin hides that require skilled leather artisans to be crafted properly…and trust us, you’ll DEFINITELY feel the difference!

A zipper on the inside makes this boot easy to wear over or under pant legs, and our zero-drop Lightning Vibram sole provides excellent traction in mild to moderate winter conditions. Go ahead, don’t let cold weather stop you from “blazing” a trail!

(Please see care and sizing tips below to ensure proper sheepskin maintenance and a great fit!)

  • Premium Black leather uppers with Black sheepskin
  • Durable, flexible and lightweight soles
  • Zero drop Vibram Lightning sole measures 5mm thick, plus 6mm additional base soling material (plus sheepskin fluff)
  • Fully lined with genuine sheepskin
  • Roomy toebox
  • Can be worn with or without socks
  • Handcrafted in USA from premium, responsibly-sourced leathers

Phoenix boots are only made in one width. New boots should fit very snug, as the natural sheepskin will stretch, but the length of the boot should not cause your toes to curl against the front seam—a sign that the size is too small. Sorry, but half sizes, wide or narrow widths and custom adult boots are not available at this time. Please allow 1–2 weeks lead time for this product.

Love them! Review by Kerstin

I have now had the boots for a little over a month, and absolutely love them!
I have a short foot that is wide with a reasonably high arch, but I love minimalist shoes. When I first got these boots, as others said, they were a little tight, so I wore them in the house to make sure they would widen enough to fit. Well, that really did not take too long, and they fit beautifully now! The only spot that is still a little tight is the seam - and that is only when I put them on, so it is no concern at all when I wear them.
I like having shoes fit so that they feel they won't fall off; while these boots are looser in the front than that a little, the overall fit is tight enough that I am very comfortable in it. There is no heel slip and the entire boot never feels too loose when I am wearing it, although it is loose enough that if I wanted to, I would not need to use the zipper to put them on or take them off.
I used the Rain Snow Waterproofing on them before ever wearing them outside, and have worn them in the back field several times on frosty morning to walk the dog; I just wipe the mud off when I come back and they are perfectly fine.
Also, several people mentioned the zipper catching as a concern. I often tuck my pants in when walking in the field so that they don't get a wet hem; however, the zippers have never caught. Maybe my gait is different, but it has not been a problem at all.

Again, I love my boots, and just hate that I waited so long to purchase them. Thanks, elves! (Posted on 2/11/17)
I don't want to take these off Review by Sara

These boots are heaven. I'm so glad I made the investment. They are beautifully made and unbelievably comfortable. They are so much nicer than that popular brand of "sheepskin" boot. I like to wear them without socks, so it's just my feet, the sheepskin, (a thin flexible sole) and the earth. There is plenty of space for my feet to spread out. I can slip in and out of them easily. The traction has been good on icy walks. I feel much more connected to my environment in this "minimal" boot, which is a wonderful feeling in winter. I had to order two sizes to get the right fit; I'm a true 9.5 (US women's), so I tried the 10U and then the 9U. The 9U is perfect. (Posted on 1/26/17)

These are the most expensive shoes I own, but they're worth it! I love them so much. They are warm and comfortable. I could live in them. I love wearing them without socks. I hope they last forever!
My only complaint is the size tag placement. It catches in the zipper almost every time. I'm not sure about the rationale for placing it right in the way like that. (Posted on 1/18/17)

This boot is attractive and supremely comfortable . Very warm. I appreciate that the boot is FULLY lined in sheepskin.

Since I prefer all elements of a shoe to be organic , natural and toxin-free, I would be ecstatic if you could replace Vibram rubber soles - which smell chemical - with natural tree rubber soles ... (Posted on 1/6/17)
Deliciously comfortable Review by SAS

I love these boots. They're beautifully comfortable and warm -- never want to take them off.

I do think I would be better off in an 8.5, so I wish you'd make the half sizes. I was worried at first that the heel was too loose in the 9, so I got the 8s, but those were really too tight. I tried to make them work, especially noticing all the comments about how they would stretch, but they were really *too* tight. So I have to make the 9s work. That said, I don't think stretching is going to be a big problem. Maybe I'll end up wearing thicker socks with them, but that's okay -- they're worth it.

Also, one limitation: I can't wear them while carrying loads on my back (kids, books, etc.) because my feet will hurt too much. Otherwise, they work great for walking.

And they look fabulous. (Posted on 1/4/17)

I forgot to add how great they look as well. They have a sleek and simple design that is perfect for unisex boots - not too girly for guys and not too clunky for a small gal like me. (Posted on 12/19/16)

I was hesitant to try these boots since the description talked about mild to moderate winter conditions, and my winter conditions are harsh/severe. However, I needed new winter boots and all my other Soft Stars have exceeded my expectations, so I decided to cough up the price and give them a try. I AM SOOOOO GLAD I DID!!! I have since re-read the description and realized the mild to moderate was talking about the traction of the sole in winter conditions, but I have found them to be exceptional on the harsh snow and ice of the Dakotas, and they have gotten me through our -25F weekend (-45F wind-chill) with no socks. So far they have only been used for short stints out in the weather coming and going to work and errands, or shoveling snow but not once have my toes been even remotely chilly! (Posted on 12/19/16)

I love these boots. I have been wearing Softstar mocs for many years, so this was a new direction for me. Yeah, they are on the pricey side, but worth it--exactly what I was looking for. The soles are great, non-skid, and they are also adorable. You can wear them with or without socks as they are fleece lined.

OMG! I am obsessed with the boots. I never want to take them off. I didn't want to spend $225 on myself, but this was the best purchase I have ever made. Healthy and happy feet deserve. So happy I treated myself. (Posted on 11/21/16)
Best Winter Climbing Boots Review by Mountainmomma

My daughter loves her boots. She has been wearing only soft star phoenix boots since she was 2 years old and now she is 8. Yes, she is in adult sizing, but the adult prices do not deter us from providing her with the very best. She loves to climb trees, sled and run around in these boots even in the coldest of winters. Our only complaint is that they do not come in a wide width for her parents. Thank you Elves for making truly wonderful boots. (Posted on 11/18/16)

Simply put, these are a high quality good looking product with details that anyone who cares about that sort of thing would notice...in addition to an incredibly comfortable ugg type boot without the thick soulless sole. (Posted on 11/10/16)

These boots are beautifully designed and look even better in person. I thought they would make feet feel look huge, but they don't. (Not that it really matters when the goal is keeping my feet warm in freezing temperatures, but it makes me love them even more!) They feel wonderful too--a far cry from my heavy, stiff, and clunky winter boots that made me walk like a robot! I'm so grateful. (Posted on 11/4/16)
excellent boot Review by madison winter

I love these boots. They are very warm and the sole is very flexible. They are repairable too! I love being able to have the sole replaced when the tread gets worn. They are fairly waterproof if you protect the leather. I've stepped in a freezing cold puddle or two with no problems, though they aren't rain boots. They are snug at first but do stretch out to fit perfectly. (Posted on 2/9/16)
The second winter is even better Review by Elizabeth S.

I've worn these boots nearly every day for the past month. They're even more comfortable this year it seems. They're really taking a beating with the salt and slush, but with minimal clean up each day, they look brand new. I cannot wear them without socks even though they're sheepskin lined because spot at the heel where the smooth leather meets the suede is uncomfortable. With socks, thin for warmer weather, thicker for cold days, these are the perfect boots. (Posted on 1/28/16)

Unsure about your size? Our printable guide will help you find the best fit for your feet! Just click the button below to print the guide and follow the instructions on the page (if you don't have access to a printer then scroll down for another option).

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots, Portlanders and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Care Tips for Sheepskin Boots

Softstar Phoenix boots are made from genuine, high quality sheepskin. Many boots that claim to use genuine sheepskin are actually composed of sheepskin fibers blown into synthetic backings. These textiles do not possess the warmth and wicking properties of our authentic sheepskin hides.

While genuine sheepskin is incredibly cozy and beautiful, it is also delicate and will stretch under strain. When wearing your Phoenix boots, use care to avoid stepping off the back or sides of your heels while you walk as doing so repeatedly can affect the shape of the boots and alter the way they fit. The best way to prevent this is by insuring you purchase the correct size. For adults, we recommend selecting a boot size that fits very snugly at first, as they will stretch over time. For children, growing room is important, so a little extra space is recommended. If possible, have your kids wear their boots the first few times on dryer days to give them time to form to their feet.

The boot uppers are made from eco-friendly leathers that are tanned in the USA. Our leather hides are natural products and some variation in texture and markings is to be expected. If you need to clean your boots, wash gently by hand with a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leathercare product, but take care not to get any oils on the edges of the rubber soles. Mink oil, specifically, will degrade the sole adhesion and can lead to separation of soling over time—we do not recommend the use of mink oil anywhere on our boots, as it can eventually seep down to the sole. We recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Bee Natural Rain and Snow for enhanced waterproofing. Be careful to use these products only on the smooth leather portion of the shoes and not on the suede cuffs (leathercare products designed for the full grain leather uppers may permanently darken suede). It is not necessary to apply a suede protectant or waterproofer to the cuffs, but doing so may help keep that portion of the boot looking clean. If you do choose to add extra protection to the suede, be careful to use a product specifically made for suede leather.

Sheepskin boots can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully soaked with water. You can speed up the drying process by stuffing the boots with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day. If they become this wet, be very careful to avoid wearing them again until fully dry because the leather will be more susceptible to stretching and the fit may alter. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.
