Very comfortable Review by mic
Very comfortable and I feel grounded with the leather sole. I have worn them in dry area so I don't feel slippery at all. Recommend! (Posted on 12/31/16)
Perfect Review by Quentin
Just want to say thank you so much for making these shoes. The leather sole is exactly what I've been looking for and I'm glad you have that option.
Will definitely continue supporting you guys! Keep up the great work (Posted on 12/4/16)
hallelujah! Review by chris
i have been needing some dancing shoes (nia practice; most folks go barefoot but i need a wee bit more cushion) for a wooden floor. oddly, the vibram soled dashes slip on me in a wide legged stance...though i very happily use them at home with no trouble...

despite warnings about the potential slip hazards of the bullhide sole (they did slip on a polished tile a bit), they did much better on the wooden dance floor. but what really makes them work best is if i get the soles damp first! how about that!

i was initially concerned with the feel of the seaming inside the shoe, but as another reviewer said, it flattens out and becomes a non issue.

i love these shoes - the look, the flexibility, the secure ground feedback. i know where i am in space.
thank you! (Posted on 11/3/16)
No regrets going with the bullhide sole. Review by Joy
I generally don't write reviews, but these are THE BEST shoes I have EVER owned -- including plenty of other minimalist shoes. The sole is so soft, and yet there's no surface I've been on so far where I've had any traction problems whatsoever. (I imagine it would even be fine on wet sidewalk, but I wouldn't trust it on ice or wet tile/laminate, but other than that, you won't lose traction). Unlike other minimalist soles, it provides just the smallest touch of cushion inherent to the softness of the bullhide itself, while being more flexible at more individual points than even Vibram soles.

I have tried vivobarefoot shoes, as well. These look more premium/handmade and feel more comfortable. They look a little less like "normal" shoes, though, because they are more flexible everywhere, so that can be a downside for some, but with the right confidence, they look convincingly urbane/trendy/premium/handmade/quirky, but honestly that's only if you pay attention. The sneaker-styling is not overly attention grabbing.

I am sold on softstar. I'll likely get some of their other styles as well, but I wish they made more attractive boots for cold weather!

top of the line Review by positiveintention
These shoes are well made and seem to be durable ( I've had them for a month). I can definitely feel the surface through the bullhide sole. Great natural and breathable shoe. I recommend ordering the smaller option if you foot is half sized. My foot is 11.5 US and I decided to order 12 US and Wide ( because my foot is wide). The loose fit is relaxing; however, pebbles/small wood gets in the shoe on occasion. (Posted on 5/18/16)
really comfy, glad I purchased Review by KB
Ordered a pair of these on annual clearance sale and took a chance on a narrow width (don't normally need narrow, but soft star shoes tend to feel a little floppy on my feet once they break in). At first I thought I had made a mistake but after a few wears the leather has stretched to perfection-- truly a glove like fit. Never had a leather soled shoe like this before; they remind me of ballet slippers in terms of comfort. All in all highly recommended. I hope they last a while!
Do take note that you will feel the seams of the shoe rubbing against your foot at first (these have interior seams, like the roo mocs) especially if you prefer a snug fit like me. But hang in there, this leather is extremely soft and will conform to you foot over time! I admit I do prefer the shoes with stitching on the outside of the sole (portlanders, ramblers) for this reason but these shoes are really terrific even with the interior seams. Enjoy! Great tightwire shoes! Review by Em
These shoes are AMAZING for wire walking. They're soft, but not too slippery, and thick enough to really protect my feet. They've also held up incredibly well considering the abuse I subject them to! It's so hard to find good shoes for tightwire, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon these. (Posted on 2/2/16)
Wears out quick but it is a real leather moc Review by MO
I keep buying them because they help with my joint injury. They are all leather mocs no rubber what so ever, like in a village or in rural places. This I have found to help me with my injury, the ground support is the reason. (Posted on 8/4/15)
I love these!!! Review by Gretchen
I ordered these as a birthday present to myself. I love them!!! I wear them all the time. This is the 7th pair of Soft Star shoes I own. I love them all but these are my favorite pair. (Posted on 6/6/15)
Flexibile, light and earthed Review by Der
Have had a few days. The shoes feel almost barefoot but with less staring from public and less dirt. The wide edition don't squeeze my toes together like even typical wide shoes do, though the Softstar do seem to come slightly shorter in length by design. Played golf in them and didn't slip in part-mud so intend to use for golf in future as way more comfortable while earthing too. (Posted on 5/12/15)
5 Stars Are Not Enough! Review by BH
For Once I Feel Like A Shoe Is Carrying Me Around Instead Of Me Carrying The Shoe. This Is An All Day Shoe. (Posted on 4/1/15)
The best Soft Star shoe I've owned Review by Nico
I second what the others have said in terms of comfort. The leather feels luxurious on the bare foot- which is how I've been wearing them.

Also, these are the first DASH RunAmoc's I've gotten since they were redesigned, and the new cut, though subtly different from the old, is vastly more attractive. I love my old dashes, but they do look a bit clunky in the front. The new ones, by contrast, look very stylish, while not being in the slightest bit tighter in the toe box. The colors are also gorgeous.

My only caveat is that leather soles wear down significantly faster than rubber ones. My previous pair of leather sole DASHs lasted about 6-7 months before there was a hole clear though. This time I am going to apply a mixture of Barge cement and sifted tire shavings to the sole once it's worn in a bit more. I'm going to try creating a sole pattern similar to the Moc3's- focused on the areas with the most wear, while keeping the leather bare in the other parts.

Overall, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these shoes. Seriously, about a month in I'm still getting little pangs of pleasure from them every day. (Posted on 7/28/14)
A super product Review by a big fan of Soft Star!!
Do yourself a big favor and treat yourself to a pair of these. I have a dyo made version with a wide sole. These are what zero-drop shoes are meant to be! Great grip on textured or rough surfaces. They do skid a bit on polished flat marble surfaces. On wet surfaces even rubber soles have trouble with those actually. I have another dash with the Trail sole for wet weather use. If you've never tried the leather sole you really are missing out, on mine the upper is also roomy it almost feels like a slipper. The bullskin leather is thick so stepping on rocks and debris don't hurt. And they're light too! I could rave about these all day. (Posted on 3/7/13)
Mmm...good Review by Chris
I got a pair of these to wear to work as my five fingers were a little too extreme for the office types. I would consider myself a barefoot purist and I was looking for the most barefoot feel. The ground feel on these shoes is, in a word, delicious. The sole does not even try to restrict movement and I have tried the Dash in a leather sole and the 2mm Vibram sole. I also have used five finger KSO and Trek shoes. Here is how I would rate the shoes in terms of ground feel with one being the best:

1. RunAmoc Dash
2. five finger kso
3. RunAmoc 2mm Vibram
4. five finger trek
5. RunAmoc 5mm Vibram

Soft Star, if you're listening, great job on the RunAmocs with leather sole! Also, it would be awesome if you allowed your unique patterned sole on the Moc3 to be placed on the Dash as well. I am sure this would loosen up and really aid in getting more subtle feel from the 2mm and 5mm Vibram soles. (Posted on 7/17/12)
Exquisite Review by RC
I have the Lite version of this shoe with the leather sole. The comfort level is like no other shoe I've ever worn. I have two pairs of SS shoes (Dash smooth w/5mm sole and Moc3) and four pairs of Five Fingers, with KSO Camo as my favorites. My new Lites are pure heaven to wear. The comfort level exceeded all expectations. I wear them everywhere. I just went for a day hike in the local mtns. I switched out my Five Fingers Treks for these. The ground feel is exquisite. I'll be ordering a the same shoe in back. (Posted on 4/10/12)

No Printer? No Problem!

You can still measure feet using the method below (also shown in our sizing videos). You can then scroll down and see where your measurements fall on our sizing charts to find the recommended shoe size. All you need is a book, a tape measure and a wall.

Note: we no longer recommend tracing your feet because it usually gives a larger measurement than the method described below. Our sizing charts work in accordance with the following method.

To measure your feet:

  1. 1. Remove shoes and socks and place the bare foot so that the heel is barely touching a wall.
  2. 2. Place a book in on the floor, parallel to the wall, so that it is barely touching the front of the longest toe.
  3. 3. Step away carefully and measure the distance from the book to the wall.
  4. 4. Scroll down and look for this measurement on the sizing charts below to find the recommended shoe size.

Once you find your length measurement, you can use table below to best find your corresponding size.

Wide/Narrow: Trouble deciding your width? Our best recommendation is to order a wide or narrow only if you have found you need those custom widths in other brands for your feet to be comfortable. If you have never found you needed wide or narrow shoes before then we suggest sticking with our regular width.

Style notes:

If you find yourself between two shoe sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size. This is especially true of our adult Phoenix Boots, Portlanders and Rogue casual shoes, which run a bit small.

Whether you need it for the trail, street, studio or workplace, we have the perfect RunAmoc for you!

Very high level of groundfeel. Our thinnest and lightest sole. Minimal space between feet and ground.

High level of groundfeel. Extra thickness adds durability. Tread pattern provides additional traction on rough surfaces.

Our most flexible sole. Slightly thicker than 2mm Street sole with similar durability. Pliable texture provides our highest level of groundfeel and most unrestricted foot movement.

All-natural leather material allows grounding conductivity (see earthing).

Perfect for running on smooth surfaces or for trail runners who have strengthened their feet to tolerate groundfeel of rough surfaces.

Ideal for trail runners and those who want barefoot movement with protection while running over rough surfaces, such as gravel or rocky paths. Also a favorite for street runners who prefer durability over maximum groundfeel.

Recommended for people new to minimalist running shoes.

A favorite for people who prefer to run or walk barefoot. Like the street sole, it is recommended to have feet strengthened for barefoot-style running before using this sole on rough or rocky terrain.

Pros & Cons

Pros: A favorite for its stylish look and extremely cozy feel.

Cons: Not water resistant, unless treated with a suede protector leathercare. Requires more effort to clean (we recommend a suede brush).

Pros: Naturally water resistant and easy to clean. Keeps feet warm and protected in cold, wet weather.

Cons: May cause feet to feel warm in hot climates, depending on your tolerance for heat/cold (still more breathable than most rubber or faux-leather shoes).

Pros: Lightweight, keeps feet cool and ventilated. A favorite for running in warm weather. Easy to clean.

Cons: Not water resistant... it has holes!

Our suede leather is a popular choice for casual everyday shoes that look and feel fantastic! Many people use it for athletic shoes as well, though it does require extra effort to keep dry and clean.

Smooth leather provides the most protection from the elements. A popular choice for protecting feet from cold or wet weather. Also gives a classy look for dressy or formal occasions.

While naturally somewhat water resistant, smooth leather can be made more waterproof with full grain leathercare.

Great for athletes wanting to keep feet ventilated and cool. This naturally lightweight material minimizes shoe weight to maximize performance. Although it is not water resistant, the thin, airy material dries quickly and is easy to clean.

In the fall of 2009, we noticed a sharp increase in calls from customers requesting modifications to our existing line of minimalist moccasins. We were surprised to learn that people weren't only wearing them around the house, but to run trails, marathons and even ultramarathons. With interest increasing in barefoot running, we began development of a barefoot running moccasin designed by and for runners.

Softstar called on our online community of fans to solicit input on ideal features to design a new shoe specifically for runners that was light, ventilated and featured super thin and flexible running soles. Our fantastic customers submitted ideas, provided feedback on prototypes and ultimately voted on the name RunAmoc. Since the very successful launch of the Original RunAmoc, we have added the Dash and the Moc3 to the line. We hope you find these unique running shoes to be a benefit to your training routine and a treat for your feet!

Making the switch from traditional shoes to minimal shoes or barefoot running/walking should be done gradually with research and advice from healthcare professionals to prevent injury. It is not recommended to begin heavy running in minimalist/barefoot shoes until your feet have adapted properly. You will probably be tempted to just take off since they are FUN and you feel like a kid in them, but you may end up injuring yourself if you plunge into full speed without proper conditioning. There is a lot of great advice in the recommended reading about transitioning to a more minimal shoe. It is worth your time to do some research and find a training plan that works for you.

Care Tips for Full Grain Leather Shoes

Soft Star Shoes are made from eco-friendly leathers tanned in the USA. Leather is a natural product and some variation in texture and hide markings is to be expected. Because we use leather colored with non-toxic food grade dyes, there will likely be some initial color transfer to your socks or skin if your shoes become damp. This will decrease with use, but we don't recommend wearing your new Soft Stars with your favorite white socks the first time you take them for a spin.

If your shoes are a little snug at first in the toe box area, you can gently stretch them by stuffing the toe box with a dry cloth. Push the cloth tightly into the front of the shoe and let sit stuffed overnight to stretch. Do not use a damp cloth as the water can stain the leather or innersole of some leather types, rendering it non-returnable.

Most full grain leather we use is naturally water resistant, but our special vegetable-tanned leather (available only by custom selection on some of our design-your-own shoes) is a "naked" leather and will stain from water alone. You can clean shoes as needed with water dampened cloth and let air dry, but please note if you do this on vegetable-tanned leather then you will need to wet/stain the entire shoe to avoid water marks. Condition the leather as often as desired with any quality leather dressing, but be careful to keep it away from the edges of your rubber soles. Do not use mink oil on your shoes, as it can degrade the adhesion on bonded soles and cause the sole to separate from your shoe over time. We highly recommend Bee Natural Amore for general conditioning or Rain & Snow on leather for enhanced water resistance. The color on shiny metallic shoes will eventually patina with use into an antique wear look, which can be accelerated with repeated use to water and high wear (e.g. scuffing toes).

We do not recommend frequent washing of any leather product as it strips the leather of it's natural oils and tends to dry stiffer. For all of our leathers (except vegetable-tanned) you can clean by hand with a damp cloth, or if needed you can hand wash your leather shoes using a gentle shampoo and cool water. Let them air dry. Do not attempt to dry your shoes by exposing them to high heat, such as a clothes dryer, a hair dryer or by leaving them on a radiator or next to a fire. Doing so may damage leather or rubber soles.

We are often asked if our shoes can be washed in a washing machine. While not recommended as a normal course of action, when in dire straits the Elves have been known to toss a pair of shoes in the machine and generally have had good results. Just don't mix them with any other item because of color bleeding. Shoes with sheepskin can take 3-4 days to air dry if fully submerged in water, but you can speed up the drying by stuffing with old newspapers and replacing the paper twice a day.
